Dr Calvin Goddard and the St. Valentine's Day Massacre

- Next Thursday, February 14 , 2019, marks the ninetieth anniversary of the St. Valentine's Day massacre. The crime shocked the nation and led to the downfall of arguably the most famous mobster of all time, Al 'Scarface' Capone. But perhaps the most important impact of the infamous crime was the role it played in the development of scientific methods of criminal investigation, and the contribution to the investigation made by one of the fathers of the discipline of forensic ballistics, Dr. Calvin Goddard.

A few viewers have mentioned that I say that Bugs Moran died in prison at Fort Leavenworth. In fact, he died in Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary in Leavenworth Ks. I am sorry for the error.
I have a story suggestion for you if you haven't already done a segment. In the investigation of the Lindberg kidnaping a Department of Interior expert ID the wood used in making the ladder used by Hauptman to gain access to the home. Evidently just like ballistics, blades in lumber mills leave unique marks on the wood. Much more complicated than I can describe, but I remember it well.
@@danielherold733 There was so much fishy about that whole investigation that it must be impossible to separate the wheat from chaff.
Another small error… well, more of a nitpick, the highest court in Massachusetts is called the Supreme Judicial Court.

"Nobody shot me!" The last time Nobody committed a violent crime, a cyclops lost an eye...
Wasn't that "no man" ?
Either way, this means YOU actually read books! We area dying breed.
Very nice! Made me smile, thankyou.
Yes!
Not an eye......his eye.
A few days after the massacre, the Chicago Fire Department put out a fire in a one stall garage not too far from Clark Street. Inside that garage was a car that some witnesses identified as the one they saw in front of SMC Cartage that morning, the car that drove away with the two phony policemen and their phony captives. Another piece of the unsolved puzzle.
Thanks so much for great programming, Mr and Mrs History.
Wow. Fascinating.
RIP Goddard.
Your studies, research, and hard work changed the history of forensics.
You deserve to be remembered.
This is one of my favorite RUclips channels! Fantastic videos every single time.
Sarasota RainBarrels And just long/short enough!
Mine Too!
Yep, Mine too..
Mine too!
It's a disappointing testament to our world that this isn't one of the top YT channels...
Hi History Guy! First of all, LOVE your channel! My father was a history major and many of these videos you produce remind me of stories my father would tell my brother and myself about history. He used to say something similar to what you say in every video, "This story of history deserves to be remembered. For you can't move forward until you know where you've already been!". Great stuff Mr. History Guy! My question for you is this. I noticed at the end of this video a VERY attractive young lady with purple hair that matched your bowties, wishing us a VERY happy Valentine's Day. Is this your main squeeze? If so, take good care of her, and treat her right so that you both may live in hapliness!!! History can be GLORIOUS to research and learn, ESPECIALLY AS A COUPLE!!! Much love to you two! And keep up the EXCELLENT WORK!!!!!!!
Heck yeah I have been waiting on a video about the massacre. The ballistic forensics is just icing on the cake!
My dad grew up in Chicago. He told me he lived "right down the street" from that garage. I am 63. My dad died about 7 years ago. This happened just before he was born. This episode really hits home. Thank you.
Wonderfully done! It's a joy watching your creations.
You have some of the best content on RUclips. I want to extend my thanks to you for working as diligently as possible to get technical terms and details correct in this and in ALL of your stories. That extra effort makes your channel SHINE!
Thanks you, please keep the videos coming. There is so much History to cover you should never run short of story's to share.
I'm a 59 year old life long resident of the State of Michigan, and I never knew of the St. Valentine's Day massacre connection. I live just 10 minutes away from the small city of Clare. The Purple Gang had a mansion in Clare that still stands today. Thank you and a very Happy Valentine's Day to you Mr. and Mrs. History.....awesome couple...❤
I wish you both a Happy Valentines day. Thanks for the upload.
St Valentines day
Excellent research! I woke up to this video today... after just watching the 1967 movie "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" the night before! Thank you for making it real.
EXCELLENT! Your videos and snippets of history are truly appreciated.
I absolutely love this channel. So many, varied and disparate topics, all explained brilliantly. I'm completely hooked.
Love your videos, sir and ma'am. Please keep up the awesome work!!
Thanks for another great History Guy - and the smile for the "massacre-free" Valentines' Day!
Thank you so much History Guy!
Congratulations to you both, you’ve created a great channel and it’s really nice to see your subscriber numbers skyrocket, as they have! Nicely done mateys👍🏻
Bravo! Another excellent ("thrill-a-minute") episode. A very happy Valentine's Day to you both.
Thank you both and Happy Valentines Day to you
Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. History Guy
Definitely one of the best channels on RUclips... always interesting, informative, and entertaining! What more could you ask? Thanks, History Guy!
Great history, and it is enough to cheer anyone's Valentine's Day to see you and Mrs. History Guy wishing viewers a massacre-free St. Valentine's Day!
Please consider doing an episode on thevgreat railroad strike and the "massacre" done by the militia here in Reading, Pa. Thanks for what you do.
Great research. HG delves below the surface to find interesting facts about stories we know little about.
1 of your best, insightful and detailed, well done to say the least!
And a joyfully massacre free St Valentine's day to you as well.
I want a leftist free St. Valentine's day
@@moncorp1 Oh shut the fuck up. Why must there always be one asshole that makes things political. Because Trump ordering federal police to attack AMERICANS PEACEFULLY exercising their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT to protest just so he can get a fucking photo-op in front of a building he's NEVER been in and holding a book he's never read is just SOOOOO great, right? Is THAT what you call "Freedom?" BOTH sides are equally full of shit. If you do not know that by now, then you are either not paying a-fucking-ttention or just an idiot.
In my first detectives class Dr. Goddard was mentioned as well as his work. As you said, his principles are still used today. Sadly, outside of law enforcement and some scientific circles his name is unknown. Thank you for another wonderful video.
Depends on which Dr. Goddard. The rocket scientist is better known.
I love how you have such a variety of content. Keep up the great work!
Another great vid, thanks, also I don't know how you manage, but its great to watch without continuance adverts. For that I also thank you
Excellent video History Guy ! ! . Do you think you could do a video on the Australian Gold Rush and the Bushrangers like Ned Kelly and Daniel (Mad Dog) Morgan ? . You and your better half have a great Valentines Day . Love your channel, keep up the good work !
I think there is a good chance we will have episodes out om both, Ned Kelly and his armor are quite the story! I talk about the Gold Rush in this episode: ruclips.net/video/H0lOq5pGzcw/видео.html
That lesson was so cool. I love the study of forensics. My Norwegian immigrant grandfather settled in Chicago during that time. He worked for the railroad.
I really enjoy this channel. I have developed a love of history that I lacked back in high school and I attribute this to The History Guy. He is a gifted teacher. I hope he gets a million subs!
Most excellent! This clears the whole thing up in my mind. Being from Michigan, originally, my family had friends and family in Chicago, and still do. My dad always had interest in the Chicago gang crimes, and passed that interest along to us kids to some extent. You make things so clear. It’s really appreciated!
This is history of my home town. I have known much, or so I thought, about this subject. Yet I have learned much from this video.
"A massacre-free Valentine's Day" is what I'm shooting for. ;) Thanks, Ms. History Guy!! That's quite the hair color! My college French professor who was purple-obsessed would have been green with envy.
The instant I saw the title I knew it was a History Guy video. I sat in on a number of homicide investigation courses at the university of Alabama. Dad was thinking of becoming a coroner and I went to classes with him. My reading skills were better than dad's (farmer schools) and I had an unusual memory for details.
Anyway, i learned of Goddard and the work he did regarding the St. Valentine's day event, in one of those classes. You were the history person on Yt that I expected would cover the story from this angle, mentioning that researcher by name.
Here'swishing a peaceful Valentine's day to you and all.
Absolutely fascinating segment. Love this channel!
With these murders and the execution of Saint Valentine himself....is a wonder that Valentine's Day isn't celebrated in a completely different way. 🤯😜 Great video!
I'mma gonna start the day with a moment's silence...then a massacre or two
@Sheldon Robertson similar story behind every christian holiday. Ironic isnt it? Like easter another fertility holiday... Makes all the eggs and rabbits more more sense than the christian story lol
@Sheldon Robertson the St Valentine guy? Are you trying to sound like a idiot?
@@jblob5764 eggs are a symbol of new life , Jesus being reborn. Yes many holidays are a combination of different cultures but it happens all over the world. I'm pretty sure though St Valentine was executed on February 14 269
It seems to me a lot of traditions trace back to something gruesome.
Ring around the Rosie's..
The Posey's were for the smell. Or so I'm told.
Love Mrs. History Guys hair. She's a keeper!
I was thinking the same thing; very similar to my own!
Thanks another good one! All the best to you two as well.
Love the mob history videos thank you

Look forward to your stories in the same way, I anticipated my bedtime stories as a child,Thank you Have a great St.Vallentines Mr. and Mrs. History....
Happy Valentines Day
Very stylish purple hair
My 6 y/o daughter and I watch and enjoy your educational presentations weekly
Thank you for sharing
As is often the case with your videos there is a goldmine of extra info in addition to the stated subject. Good job!
Thank you History Guy! This has quickly become my favorite channel on RUclips. I was wondering if you would consider making a video about the hurricane of 1938. Thanks again!
Really enjoy these videos. Any chance you could do one about when U.S. Marines guarded the U.S.Mail?
The fact that Berrien Co. has these guns pops up in local news every so often around this time of year...
I am a resident of Cass County, Michigan (one county east of Berrien) and enjoy seeing local history discussed to a wider audience.
Ever thought of doing a video on the invention of the artificial fishing lure by James Heddon?
From the area too. I did not know about this little part of history. Was aware of the connection with the Purple Gang, but that the guns are there - fascinating.
Your videos are always such a fun, educational ride! Thanks HG!
I'm always captivated by the intriguing stories, and then want to know more! Thank you for your uploads, I enjoy the videos, and learn something while I'm watching.
If anyone ever finds themselves in Las Vegas, and can manage to pull yourself away from "the tables", take a trip to the Mob Museum near Fremont Street (Old Vegas). It's a fascinating place to spend an afternoon.
Wow, 253K subs! This channel has grown. And it is well deserved growth.
It deserves more share and tell your friends. Remember those that do not remember History are doomed to repeat it.
Yet another excellent video. Thank you. Be well.
You are so concise and in depth about this subject that you made it interesting and informative to listen to and view ; keep up the good work.
Have you considered the 1946 Battle of Athens(TN)? It would make a great video, THG.
Have been working on a degree in Physics. Ballistics is one of my favorite subjects.
Maybe someday you can lay to rest all of the questions surrounding the 10/1/17 Las Vegas massacre. When the official story proved to be full of holes within hours of the event, I said that forensic ballistics would easily prove if there was more than one shooter if all bullets recovered from the dead, wounded, and concert venue did not match cartridge cases and firearms in Stephen Paddock's room in the Mandalay Bay Casino. I also publicly stated that if the ballistics evidence was not made available to journalists and researchers within a reasonable length of time, we were seeing a coverup. Claiming an "ongoing investigation" wouldn't work to keep ballistic evidence a secret because, according to the official story, the lone shooter was dead and there would be no trial. We have not seen this evidence as of 2/12/19, therefore there has been a coverup.
Another excellent episode. Well done.
Thanks for another great video. Very informative, couldn't walk away from this one even if I wanted to.
I have no clue how you guys can compile all this information sort through it and creat something that keeps me interested the whole way through..and that’s a lot from a person that’s suffered his entire life from ADD just wanted to say thanks to all your team.
He says that he's trying to speak more slowly, but I think his cadence is perfect - I don't get bored for a moment. ☺️
According to both my Father and my Aunt, my family has a weird connection to the St. Valentines Day Massacre. That connection? A hat. Shortly after the event, their father was questioned by police about his possible involvement. One of the murdered men was found with a hat which had my Grandfather's name and address written on a label on the inside. When the police visited him, he retrieved his hat and discovered it was not actually his. The theory is they must have placed their hats on the same hat rack at the pool hall my Grandfather worked at, and the man grabbed the wrong hat when leaving. Since they were the same size and style, neither man noticed they had the wrong hat. My Grandfather was able to show he wasn't in Chicago at the time, but they still wanted to know what he knew about the man. Like the good Italian he was, he insisted he didn't know the man. This all took place long before my Dad or his sister were born, but they had both been told the same story by multiple older family members over the years. There's no way to know for sure if it really happened, but it is a fun story.
@ A P - Seems like an extremely plausible story to me, and I bet that it did happen. Thanks for sharing with us your family's connection to the historic event!
As always THANK YOU!!!
Very good episode! More appearances by Mrs. History Guy, if you please.
Wishing you a massacre free Valentine's Day. ... hilarious
i would wager the body count this year (2019) under the democrats corrupt mayor rahm emanual exceeds 1929 by double? [14] is my prediction]
@@majcorbin cant we keep anything non political?
@@majcorbin ignoring the corporate influence of the NRA on both parties are we?
@@Legitpenguins99 It's amazing how frequently RUclips comments - on videos not remotely about politics - become political, usually kicked off with an absurd attempt to tie the topic to "libtards".
A+ for the matching bow tie too. Yay for silly couples stuff!
I've seen a copy of the Chicago police report with the "survivor's" last words to the police: 'FU'. There was no love between the mob and the cops that, or most, days.
Gusenberg's last words are a matter of speculation, but it is certain that he didn't reveal any names. I find Dean O'Banion's last words well illustrate how the mobsters saw the police. When asked who shot him, he replied "My mudder did it."
Not much has changed same with criminals and police today.
Gee...with the number of CPD officers on the Take back then, he could have been a LITTLE Friendlier. If only the Feds had hired Emily Post to run their Task Force, the gangs would have been wiped out much more quickly.
@@xcalibertrekker6693 Quite a lot has changed. Organized crime is a shadow of what it once was because of mobsters who turned. Sammy Gravano is perhaps the most famous of the turncoats of recent decades, but he was by no means the only one. It's not uncommon for even made men to make deals that allow higher-ups to get arrested and convicted. Nothing like the absolute code of silence that existed until made man Joe Valachi testified to the Senate in 1963. Since then, mobsters facing steep sentences have often been willing to testify against their compatriots. They gain a bit here and there, but rarely for long until someone inside or close to the organization turns on them again.
once again, great work history guy!!
This format is incredibly simple for you because of study and intellectual prowess....thanks to you.
The Mob Museum is for lovers...of History. Been there twice, great place.
The Northern Illinois Crime Lab is still in operation. I was interviewed as a character reference when they hired a new administrator. This lab was able to solve the Brown's Fried Chicken murders because they preserved chicken half eaten by the killers for years until DNA science became a reality.
The History Guy needs to see this
I just wikipedia’d that. Amazing! I’m gonna go on & read the entire Wikipedia page now.
@JohnP538 - That is astounding!
WOW! I didn't even know it was solved. I, too, am going to read up on it.....Thanks!
JohnP538
so the DNA evidence led them to the arrest of the chicken?
Love your history videos! Best ever!
Great channel. Thank you for your work.
I also have a fascination with firearms. Historically interested some of them and the modern ones show progress with technology. It's a shame some people do misuse firearms.
@J0e Biden I didn't say anything about regulation. I'm a collector so as a collector I don't want regulation but it really sucks just what people do being with firearms, cars, tools, etc.
"Here's to you, Nicola and Bart

Superb channel. Always interesting. Mrs History Guy is charming and you are a lucky chap.
Great video! Thanks.
Someone who wears, pardon the term, "thick rimmed glasses", and a bow tie, is often considered, or called "straight laced". While this is often considered a derisive label, really it's not. It simply means that a person so attired is, usually, not someone who strays far from the conservative, "prim and proper". That is why I have to smile when I look at The History Gal, beloved wife of our bow tie wearing History Guy, and her purple hair.
Nothing wrong with it. It is just one more of the unique aspects about our informative duo. As always, good to see you again History Gal.

I guess it's good they have all those gun restrictions in Chicago today. That could never happen now!
Not at 2am in the middle of winter....unless you get paid.
Thanks to gun restrictions, Chicago is one of the safest cities in the nation with a proud record of zero gun deaths. 😁 yes I am being sarcastic...
Anonymous Libertarian I’m quite sure you’re not. As I’m quite sure that no gun died in Chicago in the last 30, 40 years.
I remember that right after WWII you could go to a surplus store downtown and for just $100.00, if you had it, could buy a 20mm antitank rifle and carry it home on the streetcar without anyone raising an eyebrow. Bolt action battle rifles were going for $20.00. Kids could safely play on the streets till all hours, and my friends and I were safe riding our bikes from the South side all the way to Indiana Dunes State Park in the summer. I could carry my .22 rifle out to a piece of unused land between some elevated train tracks and plink away without interference. So stupid of liberals to try to convince themselves and others that they want less violence. It's about control.
You're deluded if you think it can't happen now because of gun restrictions. One of the biggest reasons that crime is so bad in Chicago is because of gun restrictions.
In 1973 I nursed a man in the last stages of syphilis, known here at the time in the UK as General Paralysis of the Insane (GPI - not a pretty sight). He would often be found shaking with fear under his bed or spraying the ward with bullets from an imaginary machine gun. I read through his copious notes from when he was first admitted to the Mental Asylum where he was now coming to the end of his life. The psychiatrist who first interviewed him stated that the patient had returned to the UK as he had run out of money and wanted to be with his family as his health deteriorated and the 'Capone Gang' no longer looked out for him. The doctor also stated that there was "very good evidence that the patient had been involved in the St. Valentine's Day massacre"
Could be, of course that anyone even vaguely connected to the gang world might make up such a story - but I often get the flashback of him shooting that imaginary 'Tommy Gun'.
I love this channel!! Thanks
Gruesome times for many. Have a healthy Valentine's Day.👍
I think one of the things missed by this video was this massacre caused the National Firearms Act to be created in 1934. This was truely the first National Gun control act made by Congress.

Dr. Goddard's evidence did clear the police of any complicity.
Well, it cleared their tommy guns of any complicity. More than that...?
@jec1ny - I agree with your conclusion. Anyone who couldn't find a Thompson in Chicagoland at the time wasn't looking.
What makes you think police going to commit mass murder would use their service weapon

Love your channel!
Sad that even as recently as the late 20th century the State of New Jersey so often ( and so often continues ) failed to avail itself of Dr.Goddard's research into the internal and external ballistics of firearms ! Excellent video and account of the events surrounding the infamous massacre ! BTW, I was particularly drawn to the picture of the detectives (?) weapons. With the exception of the two Thompsons all were the product of J.M. Browning's genius !
Thanks for that. Interesting to see how this aspect of forensic science came about.
History Guy. Watch out for your other half. I think she may be in the Purple Gang. 😮
