  • Next Thursday, February 14 , 2019, marks the ninetieth anniversary of the St. Valentine's Day massacre. The crime shocked the nation and led to the downfall of arguably the most famous mobster of all time, Al 'Scarface' Capone. But perhaps the most important impact of the infamous crime was the role it played in the development of scientific methods of criminal investigation, and the contribution to the investigation made by one of the fathers of the discipline of forensic ballistics, Dr. Calvin Goddard.

I have a story suggestion for you if you haven't already done a segment. In the investigation of the Lindberg kidnaping a Department of Interior expert ID the wood used in making the ladder used by Hauptman to gain access to the home. Evidently just like ballistics, blades in lumber mills leave unique marks on the wood. Much more complicated than I can describe, but I remember it well.

A few days after the massacre, the Chicago Fire Department put out a fire in a one stall garage not too far from Clark Street. Inside that garage was a car that some witnesses identified as the one they saw in front of SMC Cartage that morning, the car that drove away with the two phony policemen and their phony captives. Another piece of the unsolved puzzle.
Thanks so much for great programming, Mr and Mrs History.

Hi History Guy! First of all, LOVE your channel! My father was a history major and many of these videos you produce remind me of stories my father would tell my brother and myself about history. He used to say something similar to what you say in every video, "This story of history deserves to be remembered. For you can't move forward until you know where you've already been!". Great stuff Mr. History Guy! My question for you is this. I noticed at the end of this video a VERY attractive young lady with purple hair that matched your bowties, wishing us a VERY happy Valentine's Day. Is this your main squeeze? If so, take good care of her, and treat her right so that you both may live in hapliness!!! History can be GLORIOUS to research and learn, ESPECIALLY AS A COUPLE!!! Much love to you two! Maybe someday you can lay to rest all of the questions surrounding the 10/1/17 Las Vegas massacre. When the official story proved to be full of holes within hours of the event, I said that forensic ballistics would easily prove if there was more than one shooter if all bullets recovered from the dead, wounded, and concert venue did not match cartridge cases and firearms in Stephen Paddock's room in the Mandalay Bay Casino. I also publicly stated that if the ballistics evidence was not made available to journalists and researchers within a reasonable length of time, we were seeing a coverup. Claiming an "ongoing investigation" wouldn't work to keep ballistic evidence a secret because, according to the official story, the lone shooter was dead and there would be no trial. We have not seen this evidence as of 2/12/19, therefore there has been a coverup.

According to both my Father and my Aunt, my family has a weird connection to the St. Valentines Day Massacre. That connection? A hat. Shortly after the event, their father was questioned by police about his possible involvement. One of the murdered men was found with a hat which had my Grandfather's name and address written on a label on the inside. When the police visited him, he retrieved his hat and discovered it was not actually his. The theory is they must have placed their hats on the same hat rack at the pool hall my Grandfather worked at, and the man grabbed the wrong hat when leaving. Since they were the same size and style, neither man noticed they had the wrong hat. My Grandfather was able to show he wasn't in Chicago at the time, but they still wanted to know what he knew about the man. Like the good Italian he was, he insisted he didn't know the man. This all took place long before my Dad or his sister were born, but they had both been told the same story by multiple older family members over the years. There's no way to know for sure if it really happened, but it is a fun story.

Sammy Gravano is perhaps the most famous of the turncoats of recent decades, but he was by no means the only one. It's not uncommon for even made men to make deals that allow higher-ups to get arrested and convicted. Nothing like the absolute code of silence that existed until made man Joe Valachi testified to the Senate in 1963. Since then, mobsters facing steep sentences have often been willing to testify against their compatriots. They gain a bit here and there, but rarely for long until someone inside or close to the organization turns on them again.

The Northern Illinois Crime Lab is still in operation. I was interviewed as a character reference when they hired a new administrator. This lab was able to solve the Brown's Fried Chicken murders because they preserved chicken half eaten by the killers for years until DNA science became a reality.

Someone who wears, pardon the term, "thick rimmed glasses", and a bow tie, is often considered, or called "straight laced". While this is often considered a derisive label, really it's not. It simply means that a person so attired is, usually, not someone who strays far from the conservative, "prim and proper". That is why I have to smile when I look at The History Gal, beloved wife of our bow tie wearing History Guy, and her purple hair.
Nothing wrong with it. It is just one more of the unique aspects about our informative duo. As always, good to see you again History Gal.

I remember that right after WWII you could go to a surplus store downtown and for just $100.00, if you had it, could buy a 20mm antitank rifle and carry it home on the streetcar without anyone raising an eyebrow. Bolt action battle rifles were going for $20.00. Kids could safely play on the streets till all hours, and my friends and I were safe riding our bikes from the South side all the way to Indiana Dunes State Park in the summer. I could carry my .22 rifle out to a piece of unused land between some elevated train tracks and plink away without interference. So stupid of liberals to try to convince themselves and others that they want less violence. It's about control.

    • @mrfester42

You're deluded if you think it can't happen now because of gun restrictions. One of the biggest reasons that crime is so bad in Chicago is because of gun restrictions.

In 1973 I nursed a man in the last stages of syphilis, known here at the time in the UK as General Paralysis of the Insane (GPI - not a pretty sight). He would often be found shaking with fear under his bed or spraying the ward with bullets from an imaginary machine gun. I read through his copious notes from when he was first admitted to the Mental Asylum where he was now coming to the end of his life. The psychiatrist who first interviewed him stated that the patient had returned to the UK as he had run out of money and wanted to be with his family as his health deteriorated and the 'Capone Gang' no longer looked out for him. The doctor also stated that there was "very good evidence that the patient had been involved in the St. Valentine's Day massacre"
Could be, of course that anyone even vaguely connected to the gang world might make up such a story - but I often get the flashback of him shooting that imaginary 'Tommy Gun'.

Sad that even as recently as the late 20th century the State of New Jersey so often ( and so often continues ) failed to avail itself of Dr.Goddard's research into the internal and external ballistics of firearms ! Excellent video and account of the events surrounding the infamous massacre ! BTW, I was particularly drawn to the picture of the detectives (?) weapons. With the exception of the two Thompsons all were the product of J.M. Browning's genius !
