Your carbon footprint is extremely low even with an engine. Your little Yanmar does not dump oil or diesel into the water like a 2 stroke. Used sparingly, your onboard fuel could last you a year. Think about how much fuel you used in your tiny car on your last road trip, or commuting. You’re good brother. You cannot coexist in nature anymore than you are right now. I’m proud of you two.
Ben Durant I’m pinning this in the hopes of some semblance of a rational dialogue coming from it from other commenters. Knowing how YT comments typically go - I have my doubts. First off, thanks for your comment and for hopefully starting a civil conversation on this topic. I definitely agree with you to an extent. We did use a lot of fuel during the road trip so we undoubtedly had a negative impact on the environment but the Prius is a hybrid so nowhere near as bad as most. And yes we’re definitely polluting less than the average American by living on a boat and eating vegetarian diets.
The problem I’ve always had with boating is I compare it to surfing. My impact with surfing is virtually zero (no I don’t use any sunblock that harms the reef or ocean) so I’m always striving for that while boating which seems damn near impossible when you consider all factors - it’s a huge hunk of plastic which will one day need to be recycled, anti-fouling (other than coppercoat) is terrible for the environment, bilge water always has some oil slick or other crap in it, the list could go on and on. I
think we can do better with boating, the issue is high absurd cost of going electric for the average consumer and the typical corporate/big oil interests that never want us to understand the true damage we’re causing Mother Nature. Which sucks because there’s no better environment to go electric than the ocean where we can harness endless amounts of power from sun, wind and hydro renewable energies. All in all it’s damn near impossible to have a positive environmental impact in today’s modern, industrial society but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try 🙂
I love it! And no worries about keeping it civil, speaking for my self at least. First of all, don't take me wrong on the road trip, I encourage getting out there and seeing our world. If you're going to leave a footprint, make it small and see the world. You came through my home town of Burlington VT by the way. I sail on Lake Champlain. Sorry you got robbed in MTL. That's typical... Let's get back to the debate. Say you opted to surf instead of live aboard and cruise for real. You'd live in a house or apt. You'd have a hot water heater, you'd drive a car, you'd probably need heat and or A/C, refrigeration, and probably diapers before you know it... the list goes on... All the trappings of life in civilization. Somebody else would own your boat and they'd bottom paint it and it would sit there 99% of the time. So by using your boat, your not really engaging any of those above mentioned large carbon footprint trappings and your living off of the wind and the solar that is our gift of living on this planet. Regarding an electric swap- The way I understand the state of manufacturing, the majority of the carbon footprint of any engine, including electric, will be at manufacture. Your diesel, used sparingly, will likely have less of a carbon footprint than the impact of consuming a new electric set up - especially if you replace before it's needed. I do believe that it is best to exhaust a manufactured good, using it to it's full potential, rather than replacing it a new product before it's time. By all means, be diligent in repairing any diesel or oil leaks. I have a '87 Universal diesel in my Ericson 35-3 and my bilge is free from diesel and oil (knock on wood:). When your diesel is truly at the end of it's life, it'd be a great time to replace it with electric and solar set up. I really don't think you need to feel guilty about your your position in life. You probably use less carbon than a .01% of the worlds population. Last side note, my wife just got back from China, home of 1.4B people. What the world needs to worry about is when they start consuming as much as we do, which appears to be an inevitable track. I think you have a lot of reason to be proud of your choices in life. Honestly, I try to be good, but you're way better for the environment than me. Having kids will blow idealism out of the water. Cheers, and chin up! You're a great steward for the Earth.
Dry tortugas looks very interesting. I dont know how much less of a carbon
footprint one could make that was less than traveling by sail? the electric dinghy engine made incredible sense. impressive range too.
I dont know how
you generate eletricity but it seems a couple dinghy batteries would be a good energy dump for excess wind or solar you may make on your boat. I have always wanted to see the dry tortugas up close and hopefully we can see what a good cubano cigar looks like. have fun!
There have been a lot of discussions this year and last about plastic trash in the waters and I can't make out if it's the result of cumulative dumping over the years or the recent number of hurricanes that stripped bare all the dumps in the islands and elsewhere and landed the contents in the water/ocean.
Even the north pacific gyre really came about a couple of years after the horrendous tsunami in Japan that lead to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. It's one thing to collect trash everyday but when a storm then picks it all up from the disposal sites and washes it down the river it becomes a losing battle.
I'm not sure if some company is exploring this possibility, but it would be great if a bio-mass energy system could be developed.
So instead of sewage holding tanks, or composting toilet systems, this bio-mass system would convert the waste into energy. It may not supplement all the needed energy, but with the combination of solar, wind and hydro, it could completely eliminate the need for diesel, propane, and other fossil fuels.
There's a massive farm near me that takes all the cow manure and converts it into energy that powers the entire farm, and they have surplus energy they sell back into the grid.
Love watching your subscribers climb
Christopher Cook that makes one of us. The more subs we get the more absurd our comments become 👎
Got to get me a boat and escape the rat race. 😎👍👍👍😎
bowwave Paul yes you do 🙂
oh yeah!!! time to go for me too.....
Great to see all the hard work has paid off. Let the adventures continue. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
hi guys there is such a tool as bore scope that you can fit to your mobile phone view on screen great for fuel tanks under between floors deck opening
Hey guys! I got my card and stickers from you in the mail today. How totaly cool! I love your humility and joy. From your favorite land locked Patron.
Greatly appreciate the support Daniel! :)
Have been to Fort Jefferson to fish and dive. Great memories visiting there with my grandfather. Was always amazed just cruising along and then boom it pops up out of nowhere.
Thanks for sharing. Great video. Ant & Cid x
That “Seaplane” is a Dehavlland Turbin Otter, DHC-3, 12:23. they use to have big Radial
Engines on them back in the 50’s but have mostly all been rebuilt with turbine engines
They are out of Ketchikan Alaska, Promech Air, they keep a plane in Key-west in the winters
To fly this run....!! ✅👍😎
Great EP... so nice to see you out on the big blue ....Not nagging but get that cool looking dog a net round that boat.... much hugs safe sail guys ..
Another great video! Made me sad to see all that plastic but it was heartening to know that you acknowledged it and that you care. Be safe!
Should have picked some of that trash up. I always do and i've sailed there six times.
I agree pick up the trash. lnt.org/
Very well done, Thanks
What's the plans for Ru when you start sailing further abroad? Are governments up in that part of the world cool with unregistered animals just coming and going across their borders? May seem like an odd question, but I'm from New Zealand where bio-security is pretty much the be and end all. Our border security would end your shit if you so much as had the gall to try and bring an apple across the border, let alone a living animal. It's not impossible, but you have to go through an application process, quarantine and all that - and Australia is the same.
Seriously, you could have two guys coming through a port here, one with a fruit platter and the other a nuke - Border Security would order in a missile strike on the guy with the fruit platter and then maybe, MAYBE, go after the guy with the nuke, if there was time and they were sure they had wiped out the entire fruit platter.
Guys, the fuel tank dirt is always be a problem... what is forking fine for us: we bought 5-6 cheap car fuel filter (the paper one in the plastic transparent capsule) and attached as a first filter to the fuel line, in an accessible place. This way we can monitor the dirt buildup and also it will be the first filter to clog up - than we just replace it with a new one. We even used hose jibelee clips which can be tighten/untighten with bare hand. It is a much easier process than cleaning the main fuel filter/water separator. Best regards.
Sweeet! Love you two.whats a Cuban chug? That moon was awesome. Thanks for sharing. ,,,,,,,/),,,,,,,fair winds.
Thank you for the support Dan! :) A chug is a derelict boat used to cross the stream to get to the US. Think metal tub that uses barrels to float and a generic car engine to propel itself. Pretty incredible that people can build these things then cross the Gulf Stream in them.
Ditto. What's a Cuban Chug? Sounds like a derelict boat or something. ^^
Abandon Comfort , you are welcome, you guys are so genuine and fun to watch we can’t miss an episode, still want to know what a Cuban chug is and 13 minutes was not enough of a fix, we need more at our house in the land of 10,000 lakes Minnesota.
Abandon Comfort thank you.
That is some beautiful water. I understand how you feel about the garbage on the beach. I sometimes clean shorelines where I kayak and it's a never ending chore.
Also too. Oregonians. Always cleaning foreign beaches as if it were home
dspid2404 us too. These beaches were really bad though due to the fact no one is really on them often and there’s no place to dispose of trash on Tortugas. 1 benefit to our big old boat is we have a ton of space that we fill up with plastic to bring back to the Keys to recycle 🙂
I have to say your channel has immediately become a favorite of mine. I'm from SFL and have moved away but I get back to KW for lobster season every year I can. I already have my tickets and this vid makes me more hype. I miss being miles off the coast with nothing but the afternoon storms for company.
HI .I was there in 1980 the light house the GC. was living there look like a storm took it ? I built a 41 foot WHARRAM CAT and 1 battery small Honda gem-for running lights DR. Have 1 brick from fort.ON THE WAY HOME TO port Richey .THE wind was 45 knots 10' white rollers on top of the waves blue us 200 mi out to sea. One of the bad days
How are the new teak replacements holding up? Are they hot? Sail Life was looking for an alternative to his teak removal, suggested looking at you guys. Love the Vids.
Hello that is a nice marina I visited it many Times and you can explore the mangrove they do have crocodiles.
One last thing. Be mindful of the coral when you set. don't dig them up, break them off, etc. They're living and very key for the health of the seas, fisheries, and so forth
Question for you guys, and maybe you answered this already. Why did you choose a sailboat over a catamaran?
HA! We occupied that slip in stock island marina for about 9 months... went through hurricane Irma there.
That cliff hanger at the end.. did the plane take off? We will never know
Caleb Martin 😆
When the plane is off the water is that considered taking off? If thats the case...it did.
That plane is a Pilatus PC-6 Porter if you’re interested.
rick frazier
It’s a turbine DH-2 Otter.
c1d2e no sir
The DH-2 is a radial aircraft. Judging strictly by the sound alone you can tell that plane is not a radial aircraft.
Arggh, I meant DHC-3 turbine otter, the -2 is the beaver.
Many of the radials have been removed and converted to turbines.
The give away is the long nose. The turbines being lighter have to be hung farther forward to maintain the C.G. Balance of the airplane.

Hello Dry tortugas Jefferson notional park is a nice place. keep away from the sea planes
Much better video guys! Nicely done! Just being yourselves. The fuel and engine oil that your worried bout is nothin. You guys are young and I know you wanna save the world and all but Your engine does not spit out oil and the fumes...... are minuscule. Mother Nature is far more powerful then people realize! Forest fires are a natural occurrence soooooo..........
thank for the video. Just noticed roo has is tail docked such a shame they have banned this for most breads in the uk, guess u got him like that
We are curious what condition the coral is in where you are. Was it bleached? Healthy? Our daughter (9) is very interested in the health of coral. Have you watched #chasingcoral on Netflix?
She is really interested to know if the coral looks healthy wherever you go. Please keep us posted as you come across coral
Jen H. We spend some time snorkeling a coral reef in the next two episodes. We haven’t watched that yet but will definitely check it out. One of our friends has a coral farm so we’ve learned a lot from him 🙂
Great episode...thoroughly enjoyed it. One thing though...you are worried about polluting the ocean with your diesel engine, but killed/destroyed coral reef with your anchor and that doesn't bother you?
Maybe it was just dead coral, so just rock?
I would not have published the fact that I anchored on a reef and pulled it up either, takes a damn long time for that to grow back. Sometimes the sea floor is covered in dead coral though and it’s all just a bunch of rocks now.
Yea, with your whole philosophy, I am surprised you did not have any regret/grief over that coral. BUT, I am not sure about the actual logistics of finding where to drop.
It was probably a barrel sponge by their description.
We anchored in the exact middle of the designated Dry Tortugas anchorage. Look around us. We are surrounded by boats on every side. It was dead coral or sponge and was in a sandy patch. This was not anywhere near a coral reef. I dove on the anchor after we set and there was virtually no coral around just small, dead pieces mixed in the sand.
What is the name of the song you play towards the end of he video around 9.53??
I wouldn't worry about your carbon footprint. You do very little to nothing at all. Mother nature puts more carbon in the seas and air than any human through volcanic eruptions, natural oil seeps underseas, etc.
Hey love your videos...BUT! Be very careful about encouraging your dog to pick up things on the beach. My Lab picked up some sort of jellyfish for half a second, 24 hrs later she died of toxic liver failure. It’s more common than I first realised. X
Absolutely amazing, chaps! 😀 👍
Find it, however, absolutely disgusting, when the plastic waste from our so called 'civilised, and caring' community can allow such things to happen 😕😢
Well worth using a fuel enzyme treatment additive when you fill up. It keeps the corossion in the tanks down and cleans the engines fuel system.
jonathan bacon yup we used one our fuel was just 2 years old and the one tank was half-filled while on the hard so we needed to get it cleaned before crossing the Gulf Stream.
Living the dream folks, keep up the good work! I enjoy watching the videos!
I really like your dog ! He looks like a real little character, to have around !
You do know that you are allowed to pick up the trash and dispose of it more properly?
You do know that they live on a sailboat and are prolly not outfitted to earn their trash collecting badge...
Come, really? They are on a small sailboat and they just said the trash was everywhere. Do you seriously expect them to start carting a butt load of trash onto their sailing vessel and sail with it for how many days?
75% of the earth is covered in water. Of that water, over 90% has yet to be explored by humankind. It's silly and a bit bold to think that a little diesel engine can have any impact on a world that dominates the earth's surface and environment in such a way. People are a very small and insignificant piece of the global marine world. Just enjoy your travels, dispose of your trash responsibly and don't beat yourselves up over that stuff.
CME4 Sheepdogs ...but every little bits helps, just as every little bit of pollution adds up.
Wow...never seen a conch? Blew my mind. Then again...I try to never go more than a mile inland.
Oh my god.. you are actually doing it!! I didn't think this would ever happen.
First, the amount of CO2 and SO you are sending up from your little engine is negligible. However, if you want to further reduce your carbon footprint, you may get an electric engine from the same manufacturer as your outboard, then add in a generator, making your system a hybrid. Then, if you choose, you may further reduce your footprint by incorporating something called the Fischer-Tropsch process.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fischer%E2%80%93Tropsch_process
years ago we only has a small diesel tank for a small Sabb diesel and no filters of any sort. We used multiple layers clean nylon stockings in the funnel , simple insurance to catch even small rust particles. You can also get official pre filters to fill thru. For your $300 plus you could get a simple transfer pump and disposable filter cartridge holder and plumb that in on a loop to filter the fuel.cheers warren
Full lifecycle emissions on electric vs petroleum technology,,,,.? Is there a true winner? If not, then performance should be the deciding factor, so that would be what?
great video, I just want to jump back a bit concerning getting a smaller boat. I don't know where your dreams will take you however a bigger boat will suit you better if you are going to venture out farther or across the pond. I wouldn't make a decision until you cross the pond and if it's still to big. Sell it overseas and buy one then. Sail on
Happy Adventures!
Becareful picking up shells. I believe I have heard that the conch animal/invertebrate inside is extremely venomous and can kill almost instantaneously.
dont sell that ship...that hull is safer in bigger waves ...if you planning to go around the world you will need that extra stability
Proud of your concern on your footprint on the earth, it would be wonderful big brother would let us have the technology that is there to not put that all in the water anymore,Have fun and always care about our world
330 dollars for cleaning tanks and the guy missed a great lump of clag ?
I think I might be a bit miffed
Lovely video, lovely locations, keep safe and enjoy the adventures !
I like the more openness in this video seemed different from the others. Nice work!!
What is the name of the song you play towards the end around 9.53 in the video??
You can't put a price on peace of mind?
Yes you can. In this case, the price was $330.
I must ask, After digging that out of the port tank, what was the point of a tank cleaning ?!!
Hey guys looks like your having a blast. How are you liking the new decks
That was a fun video. Enjoyed it👍
Can you give me some information on stock island marina? I have been looking for contact info.
what? that was way toooooo short!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why never leave on a friday?
Key word - Superstition. But yea it is one that many believe and swear in. All I know is it never stopped the navy, nor have I ever seen any bad result all the times while I was onboard when we left dock on Fri.
I will never feed my dogs dog food again! They all die of cancer. Look at the crap they put in our food, imagine the crap they can and do put in dog food! Great video guys, looking forward to the next!
Nice adventure guys i enjoying every single episode.
Must be Jimmy Buffett was stopping by in his sea plane!!..........wonder if you guys could tie your cruise closer to your convictions with a WWOOF project, or a clean ocean, service project. Love your honesty.
Makes you want to just not even ever start the engines and just sail everywhere ;)
SV Barry Duckworth that’s the truth! If only we were good enough sailors to do so. In due time 🙂
There are some pretty serious fines involved with coral destruction. Sponge and sea grass are no exception. If you plow through sea grass they will fine you by the foot and often times will cost more than what you paid for your boat.
Super video! Back in 1993, I spent a long charter weekend at the Dry Tortugas because of a massive storm and waterspout. Along with 10 other boats, we were blown onto Bird Key. Spent the weekend in the Fort waiting to be airlifted to Key West. Despite the storm, the boats were cleanly removed from Bird Key. Loved that place, as it is a flirtatious mini offshore passage in our own backyard. Keep up the great work. Fair Winds from Doug on WS42 Harmony.
Any comments from your neighbors?? Looks like you dropped right in the middle of quite a few.
Welcome to Garden Key Anchorage, that's just how it is. Our neighbor invited us over for beers so I guess that's a comment?
Both of you are Awesome! I have watched all 37 episodes, and like the other 62k people following you. We want to see more of the both of you and Rooh. Put a camera on Rooh's head, Rooh's perspective! Both of you should get a go-pro and just film. Send the raw footage somehow to a contract editor, let him edit, You should both just focus on content and having fun. You can have finally say so on the episode, but more cameta time with you two having fun. People are living vicariously through you both. Enjoy your moment, enjoy the experience. You have both created something very, very cool. Keep it going!
Fort Jefferson is freaking AWSOME, I had the opportunity to visit the fort and dive in and around the marine park for 5 days back in the mid 90’s on a small live aboard. I saw the largest nurse shark and Goliath grouper I have ever seen both in the same hole! Thank you for allowing us to live vicariously through you adventures!
Totally understand the diesel/ petrol - pollution issue and problems.... and how we need to be active and aware of our impact on this planet as individuals and citizens.... BUT... we all cannot just jump on a sail boat to solve these issues.
It’s great that you are aware and acknowledge the problems... but is there a solution???
We take a bag on our beach walks to collect the rubbish when we see it... every bit collected and disposed of correctly adds up.
Great videos, admire your commitment and efforts!
Sailing is already a much more eco friendly lifestyle than living in a city, so I too think you don't need to feel too guilty for your current impact. If you want to improve, you can always get an electric motor like Sailing Uma did a while back. If I remember correctly (and I often don't) they were able to purchase the motor (excluding the battery bank) for only $500. With that and various ways of electric power generation (for example solar, wind, hydro etc.), you'll be all set for your liveaboard needs and still not polluting mother nature. With the right additions, you can cut down your carbon footprint to nothing but the plastic that foodstuffs are unavoidably packaged in and everything you flush out your head, and thats all one can ever really hope to cut down their impact to.
I absolutely love the channel guys, keep up the good work :)
Good vlog...relaxing to watch... I'm waiting to see your windvane in operation steering your boat. ? Best Wishes..G,T.
Fuel stabilizer will keep the it from separating into waxy layers of yech. Biocide will keep the sea snot from growing in it. It is not hard to assemble a fuel polishing system you can recirc fuel through a filter with. 300.00 dollars would be more than enough for a small 12V pump, filter housing, element and hose.
I tried to hire a guy to polish the fuel in my boat a few months ago. He asked how many gallons in the tank. I told him, maybe 15. He suggested disposing if the fuel (in an appropriate manner) and replacing it with fresh would be a hell of a lot cheaper than hiring him. He added I should keep a close eye on my fuel filters and all should be good. Seemed to work. My fuel was almost two years old.
its Conch...pronounced CONK.
I love your channel. Just a quick question - you have an Aussie on board. How do you keep him/her entertained? Aussies need a lot of attention and excercises. How do you you cope with it?
Years ago the dog food was killing dogs. So for several years my dogs diet was every Sunday I would take a 5 pound bag of boneless skinless chicken breast and boiled it in a big pot of rice then add dog vitamins and my dog that's what he ate mostly well he loved pizza and steak to. He was a very spoiled butt sniffing kitty kissing 145 lb dog
Another great video, you seem much happier now your settled in a bit more travelling about.
However, and this is a big however, please could you take out the twist between the main sheet blocks it's driving my OCD crackers lol 😜
Congratulations and well done: vision realized, now living the dream! All your hard work, planning and perseverance now paying off. Enjoy. And thanks for the inspiration.
3:25 to 3:35 millions of dollars of boats that don't move. Too large, too expensive, need too many people which means coordinate too many people's busy schedules. Therefore, the boats never move. Ocean dreams tied to a dock. Very, very sad. Then they die. Still sad.
Conch the h sounds like a “K”. Like I konk you on the head
I guess I missed it in a previous issue but why did Jim make them promise to never depart on a passage on a Friday. I can understand Jim or others having a superstition in that regards but WHY would he have the next owners do the same? Please explain!
I think the whole point of life is leaving this world better than we found it, or at least having as little impact as possible. I think you are doing a fine job, while still enjoying what life has to offer. I am glad you are such a young couple, since most wait until they are physically unable to enjoy life to get out there and try. Love your videos, I check weekly and am sad when one does not post, but I know you are not always able to be near a wifi connection. So I will eagerly await the next video.
I got to visit Dry Tortuga once. We went via the sea plane rather than all the boat options. If you're just visiting, the sea plane is more than worth the extra cost. You can fly so low, and see straight to the bottom of the water, and spot ship wrecks on the way.
I don't know if anyone ever commented this, but thank you for using such a high quality camera!
The mic wasn't on! Lol!!
The Dry Tortugas has been on my list for a few years. Thanks for posting! Fair winds and following seas!
sitting in my cubical at work and all i can think of is "I WANT!" - Love y'all!
Got a tropical system just east of you guys. Stay safe. Love your channel to by the way learned a lot🤙
A lot of that trash and debris is probably left over displaced stuff from the hurricane.
Great video guys. Lovely to see Roo so excited. Finally feels like you are on your way. Safe travels. Andy UK
Been there. Awesome place!
woot woot
curacao11 Leuk om iemand anders van Curaçao die ook deze channel volgt
i got some videos too, check them out and subs
Thanks for making great videos ! I appreciate it very much.
Coral killers :( so sad
Y'all have the best music!! New to your channel but in love with it!!
Two weeks for 13 minutes 🤐
If you want more than maybe go get your own boat??
Peanut butter and carrots. Try it. Much better than peanut butter and celery.
Vegetable bones! :D
