Ordered over $100 in feeder bugs for my beardie from Backwater Reptiles. Received part of the order (the cheapest part) in a box they were crawling out of and over half were dead. The bugs also reeked so bad I had to rinse them in a strainer and store them in the garage. The return address on the box was not from Backwater Reptiles so I'm guessing it was a drop shipment. I put in a refund request through my payment source (PayPal) because I never received the bugs that cost $80 and what I did receive was half dead. Backwater said they would refund if I canceled my claim in PayPal. I wasn't comfortable doing that because they were already coming across sketchy and if I did that I could not reopen the claim. It was denied by PayPal in the end because they had a tracking number from the seller that showed as delivered. No appeal option and never heard back from Backwater about the alleged offer to refund. Don't do it.

Great unboxing. The mud turtle and is a real beauty, and it was great seeing the Japanese wood turtle practically spring out of his box. No idea what you should name him, I stopped naming my turtles years ago, only my older ones have names. Keep up the good work!

@@WhyteTea- there are a few different places, personally I get all mine from private breeders as the usually are bettwr cared for. If anything underground reptiles is a good place from what I've heard, as a matter of fact I might be ordering a Dwarf Caiman from them today.

I've ordered from Backwater twice in the last 10 years and never had any problems. The pixie frog I got is still alive as are the 2 mud turtles.
Im looking for a place to get a pixie frog but i saw a vid where it came dead and they didnt give a refund or anything
@@DannyDevito606 mine is doing great. She will be 8 years old in August. On the Backwater website it says they have a "live arrival guarantee", plus for 7 days after you get it. I'm sure people have had bad experiences with every website. All I know is that the 2 times I used them, I had zero issues.

Ive been looking for the loggerhead for a long time. I gave up and decided to focus on the species that I have right now. but the musks have such personality.
They really do! I have seen some loggerheads for sale on kingsnanke.com before.
@@ShelledReptiles You have to be careful with the listing on Kingsnake. There is one vendor I specifically know of on there that is under investigation by the State he lives in for catching and reselling wild specimens.
Guess times have changed, had them ship some inverts in deli cups with no sub or tissue to cushion, so they bounced around during shipping. Tempted to get a Colorado river toad but got a feeling they packaged that for the good review.

Sir, the horror stories you heard is true. My concern here is backwater reptiles is a drop shipper of reptiles. I know this as I breed rare and unusual reptiles only and sell to the wholesalers that backwater reptiles takes their orders from their website and turn around and re order from wholesalers who in turn backwater themselves buy from and these wholesalers ship them using the backwater reptiles labels. Though I sell rare and unusual reptiles to these wholesalers that I hatch here, the fact of the matter is 95% of these animals these wholesalers work with (not mine but others) are lower valued species and for the most part are not even captive born but farm raised coming from imported gravid parents and the eggs hatch out where they are sold as captive.
My problem is it is only times like this when backwater reptiles knows someone has a big subscriber base where upon ordering from their website, they will contact personally the wholesaler doing the shipment, inform the wholesaler to cherry pick reptiles from their stock and send the people with a strong Subscriber base to give a honest review. Unfortunately the other customers that order through backwater reptiles get what ever reptile it is no matter the health and condition. As mentioned, they do not see the reptiles themselves and are just a middle man company, that's it. It saves them cost of feeding and cage cleaning only. Now my concern here with his review, they have terrible reviews online and once people who listen to his reviews orders reptiles through backwater reptiles, they will see that clearly their animals without a large subscriber base will continue to get poor quality but those with big subscriber bases won't. Therefore him giving a review period like this and people won't be trusting his reviews later. I would hate to see that happen as he really is such a great guy but I must say, with him not knowing much about the company first, I strongly think he should of looked into them a bit more actually as this review will hurt him down the road where many won't trust his reviews and I don't want to see that happening.
@@supportyourtroopsathletes6460 then they'd have higher prices because they'd be middlemen. Which isn't the case. They're importers, not middlemen. If you order a wild-caught animal, it is likely to be parasite ridden and sick. That's YOUR fault.
Horrible business. They sent me a super aggressive adult ball python with an embedded tick on his head. I ordered a baby ball python. They would not refund me
@@Arthurdankarelli .. thank you for confirming what I advised already. I did not want to advise anymore than what I did as there simply will be problems with his references and yet I really do like him and all and gave him the fair warning as I am very familiar with who they deal with as I have 3 of their first and last names who they work through, I provided him the first names since he questioned my knowledge over the last couple decades (over 20 years) , the big bosses sort of speak and I am very familiar with their practices when they ask for references from those with decent sized Subscribers list. He will soon learn that only those they ask with a subscriber base that their animals are cherry picked just for them but when their customers come in from the references, those he referred will get random animals without care of the condition and health.
People will be seeing that from the Channel and it will result in people not taking his word again with many Subscribers leaving the Channel. Again, I gave him fair warning as I like him alot on what he generally does but he indeed crossed the line not knowing respectfully. After he sees the outcome overtime, I bet he does not do it again.

It’s a bit ironic that they give you a credit and just so happen to want you to review them and give a “honest” review knowing that your going to review their animals you buy so they insure that they send you healthy animals for this particular video. To bad didn’t want me to do a “review” on the paralyzed black throat monitor they sent me a couple years ago or maybe ironically it would have came in healthy. On top on sending me a paralyzed animal they refused to give me a refund and then decided to offer another reptile that cost a fraction of what I spent as a trade off. You can search any reptile group on Facebook and ask about backwater and majority will tell you to run soon as you hear that name. I would not attach my name or RUclips channel to anything remotely related to backwater nor would I recommend ppl to buy from them!

I seriously have doubts about them changing because they send me a wild caught ball python they was infested with mites and ticks. Wouldn’t return my calls and refused to refund my money. What sucked the most was the snake died shortly after a week of having it.
@@snakeman4208 oh yes they didn’t change! This video was clearly staged so they made sure to send him animals in perfect shape so that it made them look good! They are a absolute TRASH COMPANY who cares nothing about the animals and typically just drop ship them and never actually have them in their possession!
I got scammed recently payed for 6 TURTLES 3 came dead another just died.

Bought a pair of male and female Chinese Water Dragons from them - the heat pack is standard I'm thinking since these packages are likely flying and mail plane holds aren't heated.
The dragons were both active, friendly and healthy and are doing great - that was March of 2020.
Are they still doing good?

Sorry Sir, I know to much about the company and how they operate as I know who they buy from being a reptile drop shipper meaning they do not even see the animals in person. They asked you for a review for reasons and yes, yours was hand picked just for you but most that don't have channels won't get the same. I am happy they did this for you but I could never deal with them knowing where and who they order from to ship to you. I am only familiar with their suppliers as they buy at times reptiles I hatch here. But I breed very expensive reptiles such as Albino and snow morph turtles, different morph geckos and some snakes.
I do not work with more common species, not that I do not want to but with all the work I spend hatching babies, it is only worth my time on selling more valuable ones is all. I love all reptiles however so I am not against any. But since I sell to the wholesalers that drop ship for backwater on cheaper reptiles, I know what overall their customers get and I am afraid to tell you, but I do believe your review for them will hurt people taking your reference later down the road. Backwater knows me more by name as I know all about them. I just hope for your sake that this review does not lead to people not trusting you on reviews from here on out like what was done with many other people.

I really want to buy some garter snakes but I want to buy from a reputable breeder, do you know of a good site? I dont really truth this site. I use to buy feeder insects from them and i got triple charged for feeders I only purchased once.

I’ve got a tank setup for a 3 striped mud, and all my normal sources are out of stock so I definitely might consider using Backwater. Do you have any tips on keeping them btw? Any way great video, keep it up dude!

I personally haven’t kept three stripped mud turtles, but I do know they need shallower water since they are not the best swimmers.

I would love to be able to order, but I am not able to because most of the things that I order get sent to the wrong address or I get them weeks later with the box ripped open.I just ordered some lights from Amazon and I made sure that I had my address right but it got changed and went to my neighbor. Then of course my lights say that they were delivered and I got a picture of the box at the wrong address, but they are gone

Those are some beautiful turtles, and they are in great condition, Backwater reptiles is definitely a place I've been looking into getting some animals from for a while now, one day when I have a facility (and some spare enclosures) I'll get something from them.
I wouldn't. They buy from cheap whole salers and alot of people have bad experiences with them. The only reason his were healthy and packed good is bc they know he was doing a review on youtube

"Most of their animals are CB" Besides Chilean Wide Mouthed Toads, all their toads are WC and they only have 3 CB inverts and over 100 WC ones, and Axolotls are their only CB salamander. :/

I thought they were a good website, I got a savannah monitor from them, they did in fact give me a male juvenile which is what I ordered, but he has several layers of stuck shed on the tip of his tail that has killed the cells and dried up. Probably won’t order from them again.

STAY AWAY at all costs. I ordered a baby ball Python for my daughter from them. What I received was an adult aggressive ball python with a tick on his head. When I asked for a refund they avoided me like the plague. I’m assuming they asked you to do an online review because they were getting a lot of bad reviews. Knowing that you were going to give them a review I’m sure they gave you outstanding service. That’s slimy deception if you ask me.

@@ehhhh1246 Yeah he took me by surprise. As soon as I took him out of the bag he bit me. He was constantly striking against the glass of his enclosure when anyone would get close to it. The irony is I have a Brazilian rainbow boa and I’ve have BCC boas and this ball was 100x more aggressive than all of them.

Please do further research on the company. I am not trying to tell you who to buy from but information the general person without knowledge in many companies will be disappointed. I have a huge concern knowing this company personally, how they operate and I frankly and honestly hope he did not do a mistake giving the review after knowing a lot about backwater reptiles over 12 years. Do what you want of course but please for your own good, always do research first on any company and not do spontaneous buys.

I’m sure if you know them personally, you would have a different opinion, however, my review and Research into the company was done through the Lens of what one can find without personal contacts.
Their website states:
“Our nearly 3,000 square foot facility is brimming with successful breeding projects, healthy animals that are well cared for” and
“International Reptile Conservation Foundation, as well as a USARK Gold member ($1,000+ donation level), and a member of USARK's Policy Advisory Panel.”
I am not denying that what is being said is true, however, everything stated the average person cannot find. Also, one cannot dismiss the fact that a change in management or policies is also a possibility.
I did do an honest review with my experience and research and thats all one can ask for. This was my personal opinion as I have ordered from very “ reputable” sellers who knew who I was and was not pleased like I was here.

I ordered a toad from them and it’s coming Tuesday so far communication has been amazing and the website looks trust worthy- I know ordering from them is a hit or miss but toads are strong creatures so let’s pray she comes alive and well if not I can hopefully nurse her to health 😓

I bought two leopard geckos from Backwater Reptiles on Friday and haven’t received a shipment update yet, it’s Tuesday. I watched a video on the same thing happening to someone else and they had to fight them through PayPal for a refund because they just didn’t get their order at all. Hopefully I don’t have to do that and they just forgot to send a tracking number :(

@@quise1933 This was years ago, they shipped during the weekdays & if you paid before a certain time the reptiles were supposed to be shipped out the same day. I’m not sure how their shipping & delivery is now though, I haven’t used them since.

Came to RUclips to see if people had the same issue as I did. They never even sent my frogs. Their number just goes to voicemail and they take forever to answer emails. They only answered cause I said I wanted a refund. Now they're apparently shipping today but I won't be home tomorrow to receive them 🙃 I hate backwater
The issue is that even though you aren't being paid for this, they know that a review is going to be made so they're going to prioritize. Backwater is definitely a game of Russian roulette.
