My sons are 15 and 17. Been listening to Tool their whole lives cause of me..they will see them on May 7th!!! I still get shocked when ppl say they've never heard of Tool. 🤘
Actually this song (and the album as a whole) takes inspiration from a Bill Hicks' rant about California and L.A especially, of which he hated very much he culture and the way of life, hoping for an armageddon to flush it all away, so people better start learning to swim or they will drown in their own filth. Bill Hicks was a comedian who performed from the late 80's to '94, the day of his death, caused by pancreatitic cancer, at age 32. Highly influencial, it was way more than a comedian, a philosopher I might say, a truth seeker and ultimately a free man. But you know, free men, free thinkers, mind openers and inconvenient people who speak the truth for some strange reasons they end up dead. The album is dedicated to him, many songs in it takes inspiration from his plays, listen to "Third Eye", at the beginning you can hear him talking about music and drugs. You shoud react to one of his videos, I think.
@InsHaine Thanks for the info man! Interestingly enough I’ve heard of Bill Hicks and seen a bunch of clips! I don’t think Alex has so won day we’ll have to do that! And wow that connection only has me more hyped to check out more Tool!
Bill Hicks is and was and always will be a Houston hometown hero ❤️. He wasn’t born there, but it’s where he started his standup career, and he is beloved to this day.
InsHaine No, unfortunately I didn’t. I didn’t grow up in Houston, and I really didn’t get into standup until Bill had already gone to LA. A big regret for sure.
Tool is unlike anything...There are similarities to other bands, naturally...But; they are that rare Unique sound so many bands try to attain...They've been doing it for a shit ton of years too...:)... Maynard is a beast...
Yep, and many people believe that will all the earthquakes in California it’s in danger of actually falling in to the ocean. Another thing people believe that both Virginia’s are gonna break apart and drift into the oceans, like islands. It’s kinda crazy, what people believe, lol.
One of my favourites and rare TOOL songs is No Quarter from Salival album! However it's not an original TOOL song, but a Led Zeppelin cover! It's the best
I've been listening to their music for 20 years and I'm still learning. I will never tire of them. Definitely check out Right in Two, The Grudge, Jambi, and Pushit live from the Salival album.
Okay. You need to listen to the entire Tool Catalog: Opiate (EP) - 1992 Undertow (album) - 1993 Ænima (album) - 1996 Salival (mostly live album) - 2000 Lateralus (album) - 2001 10,000 Days (album) - 2006 There is so much great music in these recordings that it’s impossible to pick 1 or 2 tracks and say, “here listen to these” because you’d be missing so much. Tool releases albums and each track fits into the overall feel of the record that I feel their music is greater than the sum of its parts.
Super hyped to see another tool vid by y'all. If yall want a tool recommendation that is different than the trudging sound of Aenima, Id recommend Right in Two, Parabol/Parabola, or Lateralus.
Enjoyed your reaction to Aenima, Schism and Lateralus. You remember me of myself listening to Tool for the first in my life (summer of 97). Keep your enthusiasm at least for... FOREVER! Cheers from Germany.
The entire track is paying homage to their comedian friend Bill Hicks who died in 94 of cancer and they dedicated the album to him. Bill Hicks had a bit on his hatred for living in LA and hoping the city falls into the ocean. Maynard also has some dislike for LA and infused his dislike for Hollywood, Scientology, and other things into the track. The line "Learn to Swim" also doubles as a metaphor for being independent and think for yourself.
So glad you guys did another Tool review!!! Can’t wait to get off work to really enjoy it! The Grudge is another great song to do, “Vicarious”, and “Ticks and Leaches” are both amazing drumming songs. Can’t wait to hear your take on more Tool songs!
As good as the first time sounds so good the second time gets better!! The band is from LA, so when Maynard wrote this, back in the early 90's he was so sick of the LA scene. Over time you will see Tool songs have many layers. A lot comes from the band's mathematical background and also Maynard who is just an amazing writer and artist. Lost Keys & Rosetta Stoned is like up there. I'd stick to more of the simpler songs for a bit. Vicarious is killer! Also Forty-Six & Two, Jambi, Right in Two, The Grudge, The Pot, Lateralus, Parabol & Parabola & Stinkfist. These are all great 'closer to mainstream' songs. Then there are longer pieces which are more abstract like Rosetta Stoned. I'd wait on that one. Just my 2 cents. You got a good base going. Plenty more to come! Tool is da bomb! Welcome down the rabbit hole and remember to buckle up and enjoy the ride!! Oh and get some headphones and rock out!
Dude Tool's great. Polyrhythms, time changes, sweet harmonies with powerful melodies, all with a killer tone that punches hard. And that's not even mentioning the lyrics. I'm still exploring y'alls channel, but man, I'm really digging your taste in music.
Great reaction guys, my favorite band (seen them live 10 times, it's mind-blowing), you can't miss with any Tool song. You got it right about the "we should restart" feeling from the song. It's a song about hating the culture of Los Angeles, and an allusion to the idea of "The Big One" earthquake that is predicted to eventually hit California, and that it could potentially break off a giant portion of CA along the San Andreas fault line causing it to fall into the ocean. Thus the "learn to swim", "flush it down", and "see you down in Arizona Bay" lyrics (others have pointed out the Bill Hicks connection, who is also featured on "Third Eye"). Interesting fact is that Maynard now owns a large portion of land in Arizona where he started a wine vineyard and label called "Arizona Bay". "Lateralus" is their magnum opus, and you definitely need to look into how it ties into the Fibonacci sequence to fully appreciate the genius of it. Also highly recommend "Parabol/Parabola", a song that literally changed my perspective on life. New album coming out soon!!
Hi guys again this is only the third song by Tool I've heard and it's pretty good will have to hear more from Tool again Andy you pick a band that I didn't think you would. Cool voice Alex you've got by the way. Stay lucky stay safe Mike UK.
Wow I was not expecting that😂 awesome song! I’m gonna go listen to it🙂 the thing I love about you guys reacting to different songs, is that we learn new songs and may end up liking them☺️💙
You should listen to your father when it pertains to Tool. He seems like he knows what he’s talking about. On a side note, if you love your mother then listen to Wings for Marie pts. 1&2.
One of the best songs ever made. And this was there biggest album ever. The whole album as a whole if you listen to it front to back will melt your brain.
4/4 and 3/4 can be heard @ the same time in the intro. If you concentrate you can hear the interchange clearly I enjoy you guys experiencing Tool Keep up the Journey bros!!
Tool has quite a diverse range within the genre of rock. This struck me it came out for it's social commentary and is still one of my Tool fall backs. Because of my psych training, I still love 46 and 2.
I agree with other suggestions here, definitely check out, ' Right In Two ' & ' The Grudge. ' Both song's are of course amazing, like all their song's, as Tool never fail to deliver. Also, must check out ' Vicarious. '
Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned. WITH a lyric video because the lyrics come fast and quick and are actually quite funny. And the music is fantastic and every time you get used to something in the song, it will change. It will change you. When I bought 10,000 days, this song stuck out, and was a highlight when I saw them live. I'm an old school Tool fan who would usually mention something from Aenema, but that song stuck out from a lot of the songs on 10,000 Days. That's why I'm recommending it. #Tool
Wings For Marie and the second part, 10,000 Days are so sad and so from the heart. I don't think I'm ruining your potential reaction, only enhancing, by saying they are about Maynard's mother who died.
Great video, the song is actually about a stand up bit that Bill Hicks did about LA falling into the ocean. It was actually meant more as a joke but they decided to do a song about it.
OMG! I loved this. So good to see young guys understand. The guy with the long hair 😂. Tool (Maynard) isn’t just the most talented artist even known, his songs are an EXPERIENCE! And only the fortunate take the time to get it. I see you guys got it. I just had my first listen of fear inoculum a while back. I looked just like you did when you realized what learn to swim means here. 😂 I waited 13 years for a new album. Worth every second. I’m 51. My three sons have no choice to appreciate the power of tool. Good luck with your future guys! Just LEARN TO SWIM! And always find beauty in the dissonance. ❤️
I have a Tool channel on Pandora. It only actually plays 1 Tool song per week and you can’t save it or replay it. You some copyright error. But it’s his art. I feel blessed being able to buy it.
when you're comparing this song with Schism, musically, you really have to understand how each album is very much its own era and its own sound. Opiate/Undertow was 1992 Aenima was 1996 Lateralus was 2001 10K Days was 2006. After you listen to the full album you can really hear how they work cohesively and you can hear the stark evolution of the band across their albums. Basically what I'm saying is that Shit off Aenima sounds like this... Shit off Lateralus sounds like Schism.
@@1999lateralus You're right, you're right... it was released in 1993... I just referred to the "Opiate/Undertow" as a single era that took place in 1992 because really it was all recorded (and mostly written) in 1992 ... (some of the stuff was written in 1990 and 1991, which is the stuff from their "72826" demo and their "opiate EP"... but a lot of it was written in 1992... So Opiate was Recorded in December 1991 - January 1992 (So at the beginning of 1992) and Released March 10, 1992... Then they toured a little bit, (wrote some more songs) and went straight to record Undertow with Sylvia Massey, and Underdow was Recorded in October - December 1992... THEN it was Released April 6, 1993 because of course they had to do all the album artwork and pick a single and do the whole single treatment with sober and have it hit the radio waves as a roll-out before Undertow came out in April because the record industry and how it functioned had yet to be dismantled by the internet and that's just the way they did it. So, of course, you're totally right about the release date of undertow being in 1993, and I knew that, but my point about my comment was about how distinctly different each "era" of Tool's music is, and how recognizably different they are to the ear, as well as how distant the gaps in time are between the albums... So in illustrating that point, and because Opiate and Undertow WAS basically all created in 1992, I thought it was the better way to say that then to differentiate between Opiate being released in 1992 and Undertow being released in 1993 and getting all detailed about it, becuase my point was that Opiate and Undertow very much are one single era, they sound very much the same in the writing and audio quality and style... there is a drastic shift from Opiate/Undertow to Aenima. But of course, you're totally right.
Their earlier music is more "traditional" for lack of a better word than the later stuff like Schism. More grungy, more heavy sounding and less complex imo. Still better than most other artists though! From the Lateralus album onwards they went from great to phenomenal.
I’m just starting to get into Tool, too. They’re definitely a band you gotta listen to a bunch in order to pick up on the intricacies. So far “Stinkfist” is my favorite jam, highly recommend
First time I heard this song, I was playing tony hawk 1 for play station. My older bro had a mixed cd on.... fucking blew me away, along with “sugar” by system of a down lol what a day that was... hard to believe such an insignificant thing, could stay in my mind for 20 some odd years..👍
Andy, the learn to swim lyric refers to the tongue in cheek reference to see you down in Arizona bay. As in the big earthquake severs California into the ocean thanks to mom "mother nature" leaving Arizona as a coastal state.
It only takes 1 tool song to suck you in. There that good Maynard is a lyrical genius in a great frontman. He's one of the best singers out there in my opinion. Nice honest reaction
I subscribed for more Tool! If you haven’t heard much you’re in for a treat. The Grudge is an absolute powerhouse of a tune, and it features one of the longest (if not the longest) scream in rock history. Definitely check it out!
I don't know if you have listened to Journey, but the Original Members of Journey without Steve Perry the Singer who Later Joined them on the Wheel in the Sky Album. Well, anyway the 1st. Two or Three albums were the Best for Hard Rock, and Huge Guitar Solos by Neal Schon! The Two Members Neal Schon, and Keyboardist, Vocalist Greg Rollie were the Founders of "Journey" coming out of the Band "Santana" back during the Original Woodstock Days of the 60's! Greg was the Vocalist, Keyboardist for Santana, and Neal the other Guitarist for Santana beside Carlos Santana!
Damn I'm getting old. Even though tool haven't put out an album in like 10-12 years it is still a breeze of freshness in my mind. I mean opiate is almost as old as me but they are distinct enough that the were absolutely fresh in 2010. Now I hear collage students talking about their dads recommending them tool. What the hell.
Please listen to the entire album, as it was meant to be. TOOL is an experience, not just individual songs played at random. The written lyrics are wrong btw.
Don't feel bad about banging your heads out of time. Tool changes time signatures like the clouds move on a sunny day. I subbed hoping for more Tool, starting with "Hooker with A Penis".
The reason this was more straight-forward than Schism was this was their previous album, their first real foray into a more Progressive direction, which the next record, Lateralus, dove into head-first.
If you want to hear impressive drumming from Tool then go with "Ticks and Leeches" or "Right in Two". My personal favorite is the live version of "Pushit" from Salival though!
This songs concept is based on the fault lines in the ocean saying that if they were to cause a quake that LA better learn to swim. Fret for all you think you need bc in the end it wont matter when you're under water. The album even has a moving picture behind the disc of California being sunk and unsunk
At the time, it was very much not mainstream, but that kind of "shock rock" has become a mainstream genre, largely because of bands like Tool. So yes, it's more and less mainstream
OK, amateur philosopher here. It’s a metaphor, it means don’t sweat the small shit, and be yourself. Cool, I’m glad you’re doing this. If you really want to understand Tool, React to 4°.
This album was a perfect middle ground between Undertow and Lateralus, it has much of the indulgence Laturalus has, but isn't so far into it that it's lost that...I dunno..."groove" Undertow has? Undertow is licky in an extreme, catchy licks and hooks all over, they keep those but later sort of bloat them up into this different kind of vibe. It's why I have such trouble, Undertow was my young teen years when it came out, Aenima I was 16 or 17 I think? Then Laturalus when I was 21, so the band grew up around me, from a unique but really cool dark rock act into this fucking musical beast writing tracks that are almost akin to ConstucKtion of Light era King Crimson or something, huge long, long pieces that end with me feeling exhausted by the experience. As a side, if you want to go wierd with them, find Disgustipated from Undertow lol you can skip the crickets I guess, but yeah, bloody bizarre song...life feeds on life, this is necessary...
Hey guys, hope you enjoyed this video!
Please comment below more suggestions for Tool, we are definitely going to be digging into them more!! 🔥⬇️🔥⬇️🔥😁
Jambi, vicourious, parabola/parable

Basically what I'm saying is that Shit off Aenima sounds like this... Shit off Lateralus sounds like Schism.
This is a very good thing for new Tool listeners to keep in mind.
Eric Stodolnik Undertow was 1993!😱
@@1999lateralus You're right, you're right... it was released in 1993...
My older bro had a mixed cd on.... fucking blew me away, along with “sugar” by system of a down lol what a day that was... hard to believe such an insignificant thing, could stay in my mind for 20 some odd years..👍
My favorite by them! Also love Opiate and Hush! Awesome reaction! Keep on Rockin guys!!Great job!
Dannys is very underrated drunner
Andy, the learn to swim lyric refers to the tongue in cheek reference to see you down in Arizona bay. As in the big earthquake severs California into the ocean thanks to mom "mother nature" leaving Arizona as a coastal state.
It only takes 1 tool song to suck you in. There that good Maynard is a lyrical genius in a great frontman. He's one of the best singers out there in my opinion. Nice honest reaction
Does this guy realize he looks like Andrew WK? LOOOOOOOOL
Hunter Fitch I have been told
More Tool please!
Also, Lost Keys has “Blame Hoffman” in parentheses, which is a nod to Albert Hoffman, who discovered lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD)
Yep. Start over. Learn to swim refers to theory that Cal will go in ocean and Arizona will be oceanfront.
I once have friends like you guys are, we have listened to tool as well together, but with no camera. we would have been even goofier. cheers
So crazy that this song is almost 25 years old. Insane. I'm old.
Please listen to the entire album, as it was meant to be. TOOL is an experience, not just individual songs played at random. The written lyrics are wrong btw.
No one has done a review of my favorite TOOL song yet, it is a Peach song covered by TOOL. called "You lied". It is an unexpected experience.
fuck yeah, dude. my favorite tool song.
Don't feel bad about banging your heads out of time. Tool changes time signatures like the clouds move on a sunny day. I subbed hoping for more Tool, starting with "Hooker with A Penis".
What took me so long to find you guys
This song literally brings a tear to my eye, masterpiece.
The Grudge and Parabol/Parabola are masterpieces.
The reason this was more straight-forward than Schism was this was their previous album, their first real foray into a more Progressive direction, which the next record, Lateralus, dove into head-first.
Parabol/Parabola absolute masterpiece.
This is a fair and good review
Head bobbing to different time signatures is a neck workout
OK, amateur philosopher here. It’s a metaphor, it means don’t sweat the small shit, and be yourself. Cool, I’m glad you’re doing this. If you really want to understand Tool, React to 4°.
The Gaping Lotus Experience - TOOL
Maynard’s line about “Try and read between the lines” is on the mark.
Tool is that good shit mates!! My favorite song by them is the pot 😁😁
Dru MacIntyre You have good taste, Dru! My favorite after Schism! 🤘
@Dru MacIntyre
Hell yeah man! 🔥🤟🏻
Hard to believe they wouldn’t have listened to all of Tool after the first video.
Great discussion
You also need to take your dad's suggestions, especially with "Rosetta Stoned"
Tool... One of a kind sound!!
Ænema is the song, Ænima is the album.
Bring it all back Momma Gaia. flush it all down the gurgler..
you can find TOOL on Amazon music
My favorite TOOL song
4:50 that bass line just dropping .
It gets you PUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMPED!!!!
