I was reading in an article that the producer of Tool (David Bottrill) would run the mics from the drums into a PA system with huge speakers to make the drums sound more punchier.
Hey man, check out Rosetta stoned out of the album 10000 days, it was produced by Joe barresi, one of my altime favourite non mainstream producer who takes the time to experiment with the artists in studio. Joe also produced Fear Inoculum (their last album) and 7empest is kind of an amped up version of rosetta stoned (to me anyways..), Tool received a grammy for that one so mayb check that one aswell.
Thanks, great to hear a more technical reaction. Many will disagree, but for me, the album Lateralus, the album that followed this one, and their live album Salival, were Tool in their absolute prime. Maynard's voice was god tier at this time, and Salival, being entirely live, and yet practically flawless, is a real monument to this band. I'd be excited to see you react to some songs from Lateralus in particular. But Salival too, as most other reaction channels I've seen have bypassed it. Subbed.
Exactly! On first listen, it was meh! But the more I listened to it, the more I liked it. Pneuma, Invincible and Descending are my 3 favorites off of FI.
@@TheBunkhouseStudios Do it! Most people don't bat an eye about watching a tv show for an hour but hesitate to listen to an album for an hour *shrug* it's totally worth it.
I have no idea how many songs per band you're into doing, but the next three albums have great mixes, imo. Schism (or the grudge, as suggested below) off of Lateralus; the pot or intension/right in two off of 10000 days; and descending off of fear innoculum are ones I'd go to first. Their panning and layering is excellent, imo.
Funny you should mention the word 'emotive', as another band Maynard is in, A Perfect Circle, has an album called emotive is the name of one of their albums, which contains covers of several anti-war songs.
Tool have a very emotional and cathartic mix to their music (I'll be honest i had it pointed out on a video like this. I have NO musical talent) that i felt from first listen but never understood. Listen to songs like Forty six and 2, third eye, wings for Marie part 2 and parabola for example. The sound surrounds you and sort of entrances you, then they will focus in and feel like they cut you in half. Add Maynard's lyrics and emotional range and the hard/soft tone to the music. These songs can still surprise your emotions 10 years after your first listen Great introspective to a song i already love. Would love to hear you cover more by this band or other loud 90s era stuff like Nine Inch Nails
I haven't seen cathartic used to describe their music before and yet to me that is exactly what it is. You have to participate in that emotion build up for the release to sweep you off your feet. If you can't do that - you will never enjoy the music beyond the basic rhythm or melody.
Alright, I am a member of the Tool Army. A 55 year old member. You really do need to look into Lateralus or 10,000 Days. More importantly, as a sound engineer, you need to dive into Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page is a master in many ways.
I am only pointing this out to help you improve your channel's sound quality, and I sincerely apologize if this is a result of your own speaking, but there is a sharp whistle occurring on the 's' sounds and some of the 't's as well. It is quite noticeable when watching with a headset, and in my opinion it is uncomfortable to listen to, like nails on a chalkboard. Aside from that, I love your style of analysis, and really appreciate getting a sound engineering point of view on Tool, one of my favorite bands. Keep up the good work, and I could see your channel really gaining a lot of notoriety.
I appreciate the feedback! It is partly just my voice I think but I'm always trying to improve the sound quality! I'm still quite new to making videos!
These fake reaction videos are so annoying. I'm so tired of people acting like they don't know how to pronounce something as proof that they don't know what the song is. Enough already.
Their Lateralus album is (imo) perfectly engineered.
I concur.
While I also concur... I still think they have been getting better as they go, we're just not ready for the newest two yet.
More Tool...more subscriptions! 😜🤘 but seriously, more Tool!
there will be more to come I'm sure!
More tool please

That's awesome if true - love creative, out of the box thinking like that!
Tool Army here, don't minimize the guitar work Tool wouldn't be Tool without Adams Jones........
@@litawells4264 that can be said about all of them though.

Thanks for the sub! I'm hoping to do some more Tool soon!
I'd suggest Invincible off their 2019 release. After a couple listens, I'm sure you'll really engage with it.
Exactly! On first listen, it was meh! But the more I listened to it, the more I liked it. Pneuma, Invincible and Descending are my 3 favorites off of FI.
The whole Fear Inoculum album is engineered with a master's touch.
I see that whispered vocal as
"Æ, Æ, Æ, Æyay," like 'eye', referencing the title.
Also notice the album is entitled Ænima, and the song is Ænema
I like that.
Yeah I like that idea too! And yep another commenter pointed that out, not sure why I didn't spot that before!
The engineer/producer for the last bunch of Tool albums has been Joe Baressi. The newest Tool album is the standard for engineering in my opinion!
I'll have to check it out properly, I've heard some bits of the most recent album but need to have a proper listen!

You know, I see Tool, I get curious.
Nailed it with the drop tuning. Pretty safe to assume most of their songs are played in drop D
yeah I thought that was the case!

Yeah I'm aware of A Perfect Circle, need to check them out properly though!
The Grudge. That song is mixed well.
This guy:"I like this."
I do!
You should check out Lateralus, Jambi, and Pneuma by Tool.
Thanks for the suggestions - yep one of these days I'm hoping to cover more by them!
Would love for you to check more tool , the lateralus album
Weeeeeeeee! Good start to a channel sir. Rock on
Thanks! 🤘
Maynard thinks of his voice as an instrument for Tool and it’s why it’s not at the front of the mix.
makes sense. Like I said in the video sometimes these things are an artistic choice and I respect that.

It would be nice if you compared this to a a track from their latest album and comment on how the production has changed.
Good shout - I'd definitely like to cover some more of their music soon
Always heard Maynard kept the vocals back to make you listen? Use this as presleep playlist
Yep I figured it may well have been an artistic choice. Nah best presleep playlist is 'lofi hip hop radio - chill beats to relax/fall asleep to'
@@TheBunkhouseStudios yes I guess the repetitive nature works for me. Try some bakar if u like that
You're right, that was cool.
It was! Tool is cool!
I think a lot of the pronunciation confusion stems from the album title being Ænima and the song title being Ænema.
Ahh right, I hadn't actually noticed they were slightly different!
Justin Chancellor is an English musician formerly in the band Peach but best known as the bass player for progressive metal band Tool
This was Justin's first album with Tool so he was still filling out the role. Very mature reaction.
Don’t forget half the album was already established and written with Paul
You're totally saying it right. Pronounced on-ema. Heard it straight outta Adam's mouth in an interview.
Good to know, thanks!
The Members of Tool realize that Maynard is just another musician in the mix. No need for him to stand out anymore than anyone else.

Lots of interesting stuff pioneered on led zep recordings! They'd definitely be an interesting band to cover

not the title track exactly. haha.

Yes I can, I've been a musician for 20 years. Guitar is my main instrument. Not sure what that has to do with it though?
you look like justin`s cousin
haha, I will have to google that!
And sound like Joe Wilkerson...
A sound engineer that doesn't know who TOOL is! Amateur!
A. I know who Tool are B. Why would not knowing of a band make me an amateur?

1. The reaction isn't 'fake', I'd never heard the song before 2. Why would anyone know how to pronounce a made up word?
Tool the Grudge next
You can’t listen through the board and monitors ? Genuine question.
No as my mic would just pick up the audio from my speakers
