For those who are wondering what the knocking noise is when they break down and try to restart,it’s water in the engine cylinders. Basically a new engine.
Water does not compress in an engine so it breaks everything, rods, Pistons. That's 100% failure. I watched a guy try to seafoam his car in an AutoZone parking lot same thing happened hydrolock.

@@adammaysz9356 The water level was very high, if it reached the height of the headlights the Amarok would suffer the same as the other cars. Also, it is preferable to waste a few minutes looking for another way than try to cross the small river and suffer a breakdown of several thousand dollars. If it had an extended air intake like the Rally trucks do, it would be able to get over the river with no problem, but that's something this truck doesn't have.
In the event that water gets sucked into an engine, it is advisable not to attempt to restart it immediately. Instead, remove the spark plugs and then restart the engine. This will allow the water to be expelled through the spark plug holes, preventing hydro-locking of the engine and avoiding damage to its components, if not already sustained during the initial water ingestion.
@@potatopizzacar3318 wait thoough i was with you for a second..BUT with no spark plugs, but youre still connected to the battery, would the engine still turn over? like do the rrurr ruurr ruuur rruuurr, cycling the engine without starting it? cuz then if its cycling, the pistons are still shooting the water out?
A slow even pace is what you want, never overrun your wake. Longtime offroader and jeeper here, you can cross impressively deep water in a regular vehicle if your careful and understand what is happening. The key is to avoid quickly running water that can take you downstream to certain despair.
I'm sure I could drown my Jeep in that, the intake is above the left headlight. But I'd creep in then drive through slowly and the water would never get over my bumper.
The air intake is typically right above the manufacturer's logo at the front of the car. If the water gets higher than about 1 inch above the logo, the car is going to swallow water. That's why it's essential to drive dead slow to avoid making a wave that pushes water up and over the intake. If the engine swallows water, with a petrol you might be able to maybe run it after it dries out but probably not. With a Diesel it's even more unlikely because the high compression means you'll bend a connecting rod if the engine tries to compress water. Honestly, the best car out of all of these is the Tesla because it doesn't intake anything to run. That thing will keep working probably even totally submerged if the seals around the electronics hold.
There's a video from china where the tesla is submerged in the water to the windows and still drives without any problems for a good couple hundred metres that it's visible in the video.
Not at all. Water has definitely got into the battery, many MS/MX owners had water inside their batteries after going through a deep puddle (not even a lake like in this video!). The problems will show up after about a week or two. This car has basically one foot in its grave.
IIRC teslas can be completely sealed from the outside and are able to be fully submerged for a little bit. And also I believe the new cyber truck also floats in deep water so you can essentially boat it across water

Because he knows what to do and does this stuff regular :) I have a mildly lifted Hilux with a snorkel and would do the same, create a little bow wave and follow it.
In Australia we fix a tarp across the front of the car to keep the water out of the engine bay . Helps keep your motor dry. It creates that nice bow wave protects your radiator. You take it off straight after you cross or it impedes air flow and your car overheats . But it does wonders for the crossing .
Not necessarily in this area... Recovery companies usually tow you to your home town for repairs. Local pubs and cafés will see an increase in footfall whilst people wait hours for recovery though 🤣
And you will have tons of broken engines sitting arround, you can make one good engine out of 3 hydrolocked ones, and make some extra chash selling them.
During my career as a mechanic I dismantled several engines that were wrecked due to hydraulic lock up. When water enters the combustion chamber on the compression stroke it has nowhere to go, and water cannot be compressed. When the piston reaches the top of it’s stroke it meets the uncompressible water, and the usual result is a broken piston and/or a bent con rod. It only takes an eggcup sized amount of water to enter the engine to destroy it.
Years ago, having fitted a cold air intake/induction kit I drove through a not very deep flood and proceeded to hoover it into my engine. By some fluke the head gasket was apparently on the way out and the water in the cylinders blew the head gasket apart resulting in no compression but no damage to the engine beyond replacing the gasket.
I was thinking more that they were getting there intake wet an the maf on the throttle body if that gets wet there's no way the car is continuing to run I once seen a friend get his car hydro locked with too much gas it was a stinky an has everywhere

Any car can go through deep water. You just need to know where your air intake is and drive accordingly. And high vechile will easy go through that water. Biggest mistake the people make in this video using their cars. They enter the water way too fast and don't realize the pussing the water up to go over the bonnet and swamp the engine bay with water. Rule 1 don't go into water if the standing water will be higher than the Lowes part of you car body. If you must go do it very very very slowly
The way the Kia drove straight up to the mini like they hadn't ever seen it. It's like when a car is broken down at traffic lights, hazards on - and still over 50% of drivers just pull up and sit there behind it, beeping, expecting it to move. A very modern British way of 'driving'.
Not just a british way to drive, it's happening world wide. People care less and less how a car works so they don't even know this kills the engine and resulting in an expensive swap/repair....
In this case there is literally a depth gauge and I think someone said it's at 2ft. My number 1 rule for water is never go dapper that half way up your tires MAX. Usually once you're above your hubs you're dangerously close to things like your transfer case, dif and tranny breathers. Then above that is usually your air intake tucked somewhere in the bumper. Hell my Celica routes the intake right to the front grill, right at the bottom so maybe 6" off the ground at most it's actually below my tranny breathers.
You would have thought the Kuga would have rubber seals in the engine bay and undertrays to stop water getting into the engine ? not a very good 4x4 lol
@@Cayres9 water gets in through the intake, not rubber seals. When water is used instead of air and injected it can’t be compressed like air can resulting in the engine “locking” because the pistons can’t compress it. That’s my understanding
Teslas are heavy enough to maintain grip, electric so they don't need air intake continuously, and the battery packs are well enough sealed to cope with a ford. Not entirely sure how well the doors and air vents are made to keep out water though.
If you intend to drive through a flooded section of road, your first task is to check the depth of the water. In normal vehicles you should never attempt to drive through water that is more than about 25 centimetres deep (or up to the centre of your wheels).
absolutely right. There is a saying in Russia. Do not know the ford (Shallow place of the river or lake, convenient for crossing), do not go into the water
I was a lorry driver for all of my working life, and i remember in the mid 70's coming across a Vauxhall 'Victor' stuck in a flood, luckily, the people in the car were on their way to the local dump, and they had an old mattress on the roof. We took the mattress off the car, and stuck it behind the car, and I gently pushed them out of the water with my lorry.
I live only 15 minutes from this Ford, many years ago It had been raining for days, we knew the lake would be at it's max, so had to go to Rufford, was with my parents watching cars go through the Ford, one car I still remember was a red Vauxhall Nova, it hit the water with such high speed it lifted like a speed boat out of water, it then nose dived and the spun to the right, hitting the small bridge, then cocked over, driver getting out of the passenger window. 👏

The people in the Ranges and Jeeps at least have the excuse that their car should be able to sit above the water. The dude in the Toyota and the BMW wagon are wild for trying it😂
Not everyone have the knowledge of the combustion engine regardless of its technological age LOL. I'm certain that there are less complex tech that are older than you and have not clue how it works.
As so many have pointed out, water in the air intake is going to cause hydrolock, and most modern vehicles now have low level air intakes due to compact packaging requirements - but it's also interesting just how many petrol vehicles seem to be runners after the event, but running really badly due to damp looms and water surrounding the ignition coil modules.
There's often a drain to evacuate water from the air intake, provided you're not still underwater. If it ingests a lot of water into the engine yes, it will hydrolock, but if only a little actually made it in, it can often work itself out, provided you can otherwise get the car to run, from the wet coils and so on.
@@StrokeMahEgo Coils on some petrol engines like Land Cruiser Prado 120 4.0 V6 have no issue being submerged in water. Also the LC 80 and 100 petrol have no issues due to engineering of those engines.
I live in Louisiana where we have to deal with water in the roadways fairly often. Your really can't tell how deep the water is before you're in it and going around every little bit of water you see because you can't tell if it's 2 inches or 2 feet deep isn't practical at all. That said, 99 times out of 100 the police will barricade a roadway if its too deep to drive through so if you don't see a barricade like in this video, most people just go for it. The people that intentionally sneak around barricades and get stuck absolutely deserve it though lol
Most will be claimed on the insurance, my arnty did it at my local Ford because the sat nav told her to go that way, she's lived in the area her whole life too so knew about the ford.
Most cars will start back up and be fine. I once repaired a delivery van that drove through the ford and stopped on the hill on the other side. Took out the air filter and cleaned out the water. A few pumps of easy start to get rid of the water in the engine and started and run ok. But most of the modern cars won’t re start as the water shorts the electric system and then will not start. Great viewing people ruin good motors for the sake of a few mile detour.

Wrong, sometimes the engine will stall just from no air getting in and before water can enter the combustion chamber. Then you just pull the plugs crank the engine and get any water out and jobs a goodun.
Water in the engine does not mean it will definitely be totalled. I've recovered two cars that were swamped driving through deep water and both were fine after. It does however make a difference on how the vehicle was flooded and the engine speed.
If your engine stalled after going into deep water, never try and start it again afterwards. Just take it to service straight away. You might save yourself an engine this way..
Having driven a car through deep water, they are going too fast. You need to create a bow wake that stays in front and creates a lower water surface just in front.
About to say this. On many occasions I've had to cross 4ft in my 2000 buick lesabre. Nice easy consistent slow speed and I dont even get water through the doors. The whole time watching the bow wake
I was wondering if they crossed the flooding in reverse some cars would have survived, once the water goes above the hood (air duct) its over for the engine but in reverse the "wave" would be at the back of the car. Idk if the escape pressure can keep the water out, though
@@AndreFG I've never tried it, but it does sound like a good idea. The water level does appear lower at the rear end. I got my experience trying to get a flight out of Houston during a Hurricane. The only negative side effect, the starter was a little rusty trying to start it several days later. But, it did start and the vehicle had no issues.
Not only this, but you want traction when driving through water. You go fast you're likely to get swept away if the water is moving at all, which only increases the deeper the water.

"jeeper"

"Swamped" nice.
Well said and you forgot to mention about the many electrical shorts that also occurs. So many computer in modern cars.
Years ago, having fitted a cold air intake/induction kit I drove through a not very deep flood and proceeded to hoover it into my engine.

The water is always deeper than it looks.
And that water looks pretty deep already lol
In this case there is literally a depth gauge and I think someone said it's at 2ft. My number 1 rule for water is never go dapper that half way up your tires MAX. Usually once you're above your hubs you're dangerously close to things like your transfer case, dif and tranny breathers. Then above that is usually your air intake tucked somewhere in the bumper. Hell my Celica routes the intake right to the front grill, right at the bottom so maybe 6" off the ground at most it's actually below my tranny breathers.

There's often a drain to evacuate water from the air intake, provided you're not still underwater.

@@garethreece the disco sport could've easily made it. with proper technique (also known as common sense) i have no doubt it would do a lot better than most
@@mylifeasmanta no argument there (as proved by the one later on that did complete it)
Its such a shame, most vehicles can happily get through that water without any issue, I mean its only upto the axle hubs!!! They just decide to plow into it for a reason I'll NEVER understand.. If you coasted through that water in 1st gear at idle without making any splash whatsoever, the car would get through it like a puddle lol
Indeed. Notice how at about 5min in a 4x4 with a snorkel shows up, and the guys drives through it as he should, without splashing the water all over the car, and making sure he has a nice bow wave. Did not even need the snorkel there.
Exactly. Those idiots think the faster, the better.
Not to mention the fact that water is actually pretty hard and going through it at like 20 mph can easily rip many plastic parts off.
They go for the famous “speed and power” solution 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@danielc4296 the Jeremy Clarkson approach
The amount of money in motors that road has claimed could of paid for a bridge
It did. A pedestrian bridge
Why don't they build a bridge
@@AlphaKing30 That costs the _locals_ money, and they already know how to get around it if they can't get through.
@@DVul there is 5min longer way around it a bad infrastructure decision would be to build an expensive bridge whit continuous maintenance cost when there is a 5min longer alternative that you would only have to use on high water days.
Тесла тоже зря проехала , вода попадёт в блок батареи и контакты , если не сгорит , то просто умрёт😂
Every Range Rover and Land Rover were like, "Hold my Water".
The one guy on the dirt bike knew what he was doing. Slightly higher RPM, nice and slow and watch the airbox. His buddies knew even more. Take the pedestrian bridge. 😆
And you can definitely see the difference of knowledgeable driver in fording water, (the land cruiser with snorkel. Took it slow with approach, given he has snorkel) vs people who just plow through it. Sometimes its satisfying to watch haha
На Рено водитель -молодец!!догадался выехать из воды на стартере
2ft of water is a real engine killer…thanks for sharing Ben 👏🏻👏🏻
Not if you drive a full size Range Rover or new Defender. They can wade 3ft.
Every single one of the cars that broke down is a total write off. The car full of water wont be the only one...flood damage= wet carpets, mold, damaged electrics and the rest...etc for ever
Not to mention bent piston rods from where the water won't compress and the engine destroys itself
@@james-5560 But even if you can get a cheap used engine and put it in yourself, the remaining damage won't make it worth it and cause big issues down the line
Wrong, sometimes the engine will stall just from no air getting in and before water can enter the combustion chamber. Then you just pull the plugs crank the engine and get any water out and jobs a goodun.
@@waynepantry7023 Water suffocates the engine before reaching piston
Water in the engine does not mean it will definitely be totalled. I've recovered two cars that were swamped driving through deep water and both were fine after.
It does however make a difference on how the vehicle was flooded and the engine speed.
If your engine stalled after going into deep water, never try and start it again afterwards. Just take it to service straight away. You might save yourself an engine this way..
The last driver, well done!!!!
The land cruiser with the snorkel was the only vehicle to drive through properly 🤣 we've got some real knuckle draggers in this country 😂😂😂
The Amarok at the end did as well. Took it super slow entering the water, than saw the water depth on the sign and reversed out of there.
This is the best channel on RUclips, hands down 😂
Dont even know why enjoyed this video so much
It's like watching the 11foot8 bridge
These guys are enjoying free tv😂
I made it to the airport, but unfortunately not enough the airport workers made it there and flights were cancelled. The only negative side effect, the starter was a little rusty trying to start it several days later. But, it did start and the vehicle had no issues.
Yes Bro
They have to leaRn fisrt
Not only this, but you want traction when driving through water. You go fast you're likely to get swept away if the water is moving at all, which only increases the deeper the water. Not to mention with flooding that bad it could cause road erosion. I had to drive through water in a truck and I could feel pieces of the road breaking up under me
