  • HOW TO SPIN YOUR CHIP SHOTS
    Learn how to impart maximum spin on those shots around the green, so you can get up and down when you thought you were dead!
    There are many myths surrounding spin that I give clarity on here, so you will know exactly what you're doing and stop wasting your time jumping from one piece of useless advice to another. Remember everything I teach comes from the real world of playing this game for a living with the best in the world, not from a theory that's unproven under pressure.
    If you want to learn a massive array of game changing chip shots head over to my website www.vanphillips.co.uk where there are detailed videos on just about every greenside scenario. There's also written articles and a forum so you can join the conversation!

    As soon as you stressed using "your whole body," I knew you were giving a GREAT golf lesson here. ALL errant pitch and / or chip shots are usually the direct result of NOT using the body, turning towards the intended target. EXCELLENT JOB here, Van. Respect.

    Thanks Mr Phillips for this lesson! You declare very well so that a interested player can get a idea of the shot, and only with this idea a good shot can be done. When I started playing golf I was a "old" man (25years) and I thought that reading and understanding what happens by doing this is the best way to tearn. So I read Leadbetter "All about swing" and also Hogans modern fundamentals. I practiced for myself o nthe range with the tips by leadbetter and after month I played my first tournament with 58 stableford points or in strokegame 14over. I think a good result for 3 months golf. Than after 6 month I played hcp 6 and two years later rounds of 7under (!). I think that there is only one way becoming a solid golfer: Learning to understand what happens by hitting the ball, getting a idea about how a shot has to flight and to roll, about the launch angle and all this things. You try to declare exact this to all the golfers, and thats why your video is excellent! Thanks therefor! All the best!

    Great information, I thank you. I wonder if it is true that as we get older we should not use a 60 plus degree wedge? I am 58 and had other golfers suggest that my 62 degree is uneccesary. It works for me. So this information seems silly.

  • @johnhull81

    Great video... Two questions though, when you open the face why doesn't the face angle point right? I've never understood this! Also, I notice just before your downswing you make a slight lateral move left, does this change your low point for the swing to enable solid ball striking. Been working on this move but stuck between "just rotating" and this forward move in the transition. I tend to flip at impact a bit and can look like I'm hanging back a bit

    • @vanphillipsgolf6651
      @vanphillipsgolf6651  3 года назад +1

      THanks John! when you have circa 60 degrees of loft presented to the ball at impact, the blow is glancing and therefore the ball will take off more in line with swing direction than face angle. In contrast a ball hit with an open face with a 5 iron for example will take off roughly 85% in line with face angle. Shifting slightly toward target in the downswing can help strike and can move low point forward.

    Good stuff. I have been working on nothing else for 6 months (an hour 3 or 4 times a week). The rest of my game has been decent, but have been a basket case with shots around the green - there is nothing worse than a bladed shot. I am finally starting to feel some progress. Soft hands, min wrist action, keep turning the upper body toward target on downswing, slide the club under the ball w/out closing the face for max loft and spin. Feels like the ball rolls up the club face and a nice flop shot result. It is curious that with acceleration the shot goes higher w/more spin.

  • @scottlarsen7366
    @scottlarsen7366 5 лет назад

    Van, one important ingredient to spinning any shot is a soft covered ball. I couldn't listen to your entire presentation, but that seems to be one element most instructors forget to talk about. Only a "balata" type cover will spin enough to check up hard. The hardcover balls just bounce off the face of the club and go high instead of a medium trajectory with a lot of spin. Soft covered balls ride longer up the face upon impact and get more spin imparted on them. Yes, technique is important too, but a soft cover is vital.

    Thank you for this tip! A little critiquing from a nobody here though but for future videos I'd minimize the verbal discussion as much as possible. Show a few shots first, discuss the technique ,and then close it out with a pin seeker. Actual chip is 10:21 into the video.

    And I am a retired instructor. I was predominantly a visual/auditory (see/explain) player and instructor so this instruction suits me to a tee. He tells me why (auditory) certain positions must be achieved and why certain preconceived ideas (strike down) do not work to create spin. He shows me (visual) positions. Comments here, about the instructor being too wordy, are likely to have come from people who are highly kinesthetic (feel) players. They want to know how it feels to hit the chip properly, where they should feel tension in their legs, how the club should feel passing through the grass, etc, and this kind of information is nearly completely missing from this instruction. And rightly so. Van Phillips, it is obvious to me, is a visual/auditory player and instructor. You are the player you are. An instructor who is a feel (kinesthetic) player is rarely effective with the vast majority of auditory and visual learners. They can do it, but not teach it.
    The only times Van Phillips instructor addresses feel is when he says to grip the club with a 5 out of 10 grip pressure, where to feel your weight at address, and holding the club firm at the finish. Feel is not how he gets the job done. He is an explainer/show-er. Sure he gets the aesthetic buzz we all get from hitting a nice shot. I suggest that, unlike feel players, his attempts to reproduce that great shot on the course, will be a process of thinking about and visualizing body, hand, and arm positions that were present during the previous great shot. Not the feel. Feel is nice, but not the thing that is going to get the job done consistently. A feel player will simply try to reproduce the same feeling they had on that last great shot. Feel players are the best players in the world and also the worst, most frustrated learners. These are the guys who win the club championship or give up golf after two tries because it is too hard.
    Look at what a key his finish position is to his execution of the shot. He explains three times, that the hands are opposite the belt buckle, and that you do not flip the club head. Yes he says, hold it firm at the finish and that is a feel comment, but the golf swing cannot be totally explained or shown...there are feelings that cannot be explained without using feel terms, like "firm."
    This instructor is auditory/visual and his instruction will seem overly complex to visual or visual/kinesthetic learners. For people like me, we eat it up. I suggest people who do not want all this explanation and visual imagery (shaft lean, "open club to 12:05", etc.), find an instructor that tends to talk about feeling (compression, relaxation, thigh tension, loading, etc.). All of this was addressed in this video, but it was all explained and shown, not described as feelings. And by the way, good luck finding a kinesthetic teacher. There are very few people who can communicate what the golf swing feels like. Can you?

      as someone who trains people in how to train and assess others - I echo all of the above and was going to write something similar - so thank-you. I personally am mainly visual and auditory so the demonstration and the talk was very useful - you have to teach and show facts "do to fats then do it slow" and "then give the learner a go" - all of that was there - all those wanting a quick fox - I bet there golf is not improving anytime soon - but if they are kinaesthetic then they need to go and practice!
      Very informative I'll go and out into practice now - their way is definitely not everybody's way!

    I'm in my 60s and have golfed since I was 8 yrs old. I've never had a professional lesson and it shows. However, I never put backspin on the ball; I bump and run so as to read the green as the ball approaches the pin location. Putting backspin means you need to overshoot the pin; that seems counter-productive to me. But to each his/her own.

    • @vanphillipsgolf6651
      @vanphillipsgolf6651  5 лет назад

      Michael Stangl hi Michael, bounce is a complex question and is 100% dependent on the lie and ground conditions. There’s also many grinds on the sole that change his versatile the wedge will play. Generally you want more bounce from soft lush lies and less from firm tight lies with low bounce starting from about 4 degrees and high bounce around 12👍

    Just not true that more loft produces more spin. A 60 deg loft tends to have less friction and hence less spin. 45-50deg of dyn loft with zero angle of attack will produce the most efficient spin loft and you'll find the ball hopping and biting much more efficiently.

      Chris Burns hi Chris thanks! This technique actually does normally produce a one/two bounce and stop, but it will depend on the green condition and your lie e.g. If your lie is tight and the green firm, then two bounces is likely, and one bounce if the green is soft. Always expect less spin from rough or lush lies. Best. Van

    • @cburnsify
      @cburnsify 7 лет назад

      Van Phillips Golf Hi Van. I agree with you on the bounce and stop shot. To be clearer, I was talking about the low, driving long chip that has tremendous spin and takes a bounce and quickly stops. This chip is usually hit to back pins. The shot usually is low trajectory. Your vids are excellent!...cheers

    • @vanphillipsgolf6651
      @vanphillipsgolf6651  7 лет назад

      Chris Burns the lower the flight the lower the dynamic loft Chris, so spin will always be lower, but if the lie is tight and the greens receptive, you can do everything I say in the video with the ball back in your stance and the low spinner will be yours!
      Best

      The backspin in this shot is what stops the ball quickly after landing on the green, which keeps it from zipping past the whole. To get the type of visible backspin you're referring to, it would require a much harder swing from a greater distance around 70 to 80 yards. Hope this helps explain it.

    Best way us buy a dr. Spin club. It will yank back like a pool ball amd leave teeth marks on the ball. Even a skull will spin back

    Never knew about the distance thing, or anything about chipping other than tips from friends while out golfing. Here I've been trying to back spin 5 yards off the green, smh. To all you people complaining about length of video and teaching, really? It's a teaching video, maybe if you listened you might learn something new.

    You did way too much talking. It took you 11minutes and 47 seconds to hit that first shot...what should have been 3 minutes of instruction.

    For crying out loud, hit a shot and THEN explain it. It took 10 minutes of talking before we saw the results.

      Pretty choosey for someone seeking a free golf lesson. This lesson (as explained) couldn't have been done any better. If you were 'ahead of the class,' (as was I), then you should've advanced the vid (like I did) instead of sniveling about the methodology that Van no doubt wanted to impart to some of the more inexperienced golfers viewing the vid. For that matter, it's a safe bet to advance mostly EVERY vid (topic notwithstanding) at least a couple of minutes at a time and in this way I think you'll be more satisfied and perhaps less cranky?

      Dear bag dad! Dad sounds like you would be a old man. And your answer shows me that you surley became old about learning some golfshots. If you dont understand tge idea how to hit a shot, than you go to the ball without a idea how your next shot should be done for a successfu result. Learning what happens is the most important lesson in golf, if you would take time in this you would become a much better player in short time.All the best for you.

    Nice, your content is excellent! Even better to have it explained by someone that can actually play and not Johnny 4 handicap reading the PGA manual! 100% not talking to much, I want to know what you feel and how to feel it so I can feel it, you can only do that with words!!!!! :-)

      fraser carnihan great to hear Fraser! I always try to convey what I've learned works under pressure for me as well as knowledge I gleaned from playing with the greats like Seve, Faldo, Langer, Woosnam, Lyle, Els and many more.

    good vid ...but in the States we call that a pitch shot

    • @vanphillipsgolf6651
      @vanphillipsgolf6651  5 лет назад

      FairwayJack lots of varied definitions between chips and pitches, I like to think a chip is anything up to 30yds and a pitch from 30 to 110ish. As I say in the video, trying to create a lot of spin on short chips is not only difficult but largely unnecessary👍 hope you’ve checked out my website as there’s a full spectrum of great videos on everything from sports psychology, technique on every shot to golf specific excercise (I’m also a qualified gym instructor)👍

      Not sure he got your point. The slowmo ball in flight shot was somewhat off putting/distracting to me as I wanted to actually see what it looked like. His reply shows that he didn't understand and might be lacking a bit of humility himself.
