Written for a Prison Movie back in (1955) titled "Unchained." It was Composed by Multi-Academy Award Winning Composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret. Ten years later in 1965. Counter Tenor 'Bobby Hatfield' of the 'Righteous Brothers' gave a performance that was one for the ages. This epic (Live) performance was done on the 'Andy Williams Show' way before auto-tune or electronic enhancement. This is considered in the music industry as one of the greatest live television performances by a Singer and Orchestra in music history. Brilliant!
If you are interested, he is a Contra-tenor so his high notes in his songs are not falsetto, it is his natural range of more than 3 octaves, maybe 4 octaves. Also, no autotune, which makes my voice sound good, and not the microphone, just a small hand held connected to a wire. The point is, what you heard from him, Bobby Hatfield, is unaltered. Not many can do that today.
WHAT I LOVED ABOUT YOU BEAUTIFUL GUYS IS THAT YOU LET US WATCH AND LISTEN TO THE VIDEO WITHOUT INTERRUPTIONS WHILE GIVING A BEAUTIFUL REACTION AND WAITED TO THE END TO GIVE A GREAT RESPONDS. THANK YOU.
Bobby Hatfiled was 25 whenhe sang this live. He had been suffering with a terrible cold for weeks but nailed it anyway. His parents were in the audience and wanted to make them proud. I think he accomplished that.
Bobby Hatfield was probably one of the best talents we ever had. He was a musician, more than just a singer. His range was phenomenal and he was a countertenor. His breath control and the velvety tones, his soul, his heart everything goes into his singing, and when he opens his mouth what comes out is magnificent. He was as perfect a musician that I can imagine.
I am 81 and have heard several artists before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of their albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we know. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.
Host Andy Williams and Kamy said it best "Beautiful." No one has sung this most beautiful of ballads "Unchained Melody" better than the late great Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. Composed by multi-Award-winning composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret. For the (1955) Prison movie "Unchained." This greatest (Live) television performance done 58 years ago in 1965. Has become the standard for the way Unchained Melody will forever be sung. Bobby Hatfield set the bar too high and many still cannot top this performance. Brilliant! Great reaction by you two. Love it.
It always amazes me when Reactors never heard of the songs, singers and groups of Oldies But Goodies, and other genres. I am so happy when I see the joy on their faces as they discover and appreciate all these ol' classics. I pretend I am listening to it for the first time with them to experience the same element of surprise, the musical creativity, the instrumentation accompanied with the poetic love lyrics. I am so glad there are reaction videos because that will ensure these old Classics will continue to live on forever.
The lyrics are so beautiful. I think the younger generation does not realize - in 1965, the Vietnam War was in swing. "I'll be coming home. Wait for me." That gives the song so much more meaning.
One man, one mic, one take, LIVE... 100% Talent. --- He was trying not to overpower the song, it's only at the end he let his amazing voice fly. I've seen professional singers react to this video and they're all blown away.
Check Check out the origin and history of this classic song to hear some of the 1,500 version of this classic song. Some of the singers just may surprise you. Bobby Hatfield has the most acclaim and popular version.
He's clearly as nervous as a kitten at the start in the 'to and fro' with Andy Williams, and by now you'll know the background context of his mother in the audience etc., but my goodness, this must rate as one of the best live popular music performances of all time, simply stunning.
And that was done on an ancient microphone, with no auto-tune, no synthesizers, and during a live broadcast over ancient television waves. Not many people can do that these days.
The smile at the end was because his Mother was there and he got through it. Over 670 singers around the world recorded this song. I don’t have to hear them all to know Bobby did it the best. I grew up listening to them sing. Thank you.
@@corawheeler9355, didn’t know Sam Cooke had a version. He is one of the very rare one’s I would listen to. Thank you. Richard Marx calls Sam the best voice ever and John Farnham the best voice living today. We thought we had kept John a great secret for more than 50 years and Richard found him when he was young on the radio in Australia using his father’s satellite dish. He found one record store in LA that would order the Whispering Jack Album for him. The same day I watched the Richard Marx interview I watched one of John singing years later. Richard came on stage to play the piano for him. John was always surprised and humbled that a famous person came to see him.I wonder what he thought he was. If you haven’t listened to John before he is always better live. Try John Farnham singing Help live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. You will see why he is called the Voice. Now I am off to find Sam.
Thank you for not interrupting this beautiful song…Every woman loves slow dancing to this with that someone special. This became the anthem of our soldiers in Vietnam for their wives and girlfriends when …if… them made it home.
You guys react perfectly. Very good guys. You let it play out and hold your reactions to the end. Photogenic and a Class act. Bravo guys. These two performers were INCREDIBLE vocally. They were top banana in the mid 60 s . Peace
Bill Medley, the one who wasn't in this song, sang the theme song of the movie, "Dirty Dancing" called "The Time of My Life" with Jennifer Warnes. Of course that was years after this performance.
My beautiful brother and sister, I just joined your beautiful family, I just wanna tell y'all that I was born in 1965 and in the 60's and 70's they was known as panty droppers because just like the Beatles the women went crazy over them, js y'all 😊
They started with a small L.A. area record label called Moonglow. After getting some fame and exposure a large label pick them up. They became more mainstream. But with Moonglow they'd been edgier and doing some of their own songs. Some reactors need to check out some of these songs. I Just Want to Make Love to You or Little Latin Lupe Lu about a girl Bill knew in high school.
We call that "Blue eyed soul" lol... what an awesome singer with amazing range and control! Remember, at that time there was no autotune nor engineering trickery to enhance the voice. What you got there was pure talent. What you heard was the real thing. His high notes, vibrato and runs were unbelievable!! A live amazing performance! Thank you both for not interrupting. Loved your reaction King and Kamy!
He had a really bad cold, that's why he sounded kind of out of breath when they were talking with Andy in the beginning. Also, it was the first time his mom was seeing him perform live, so he was really nervous! He managed to perform the song beautifully! One for the ages. He didn't write it, and he wasn't the first to sing it...but he made it HIS song! RIP Bobby Hatfield.
Danced many a steps to this song and love to see you young people's reactions to MY music. You girls eyes start smiling, then you mouth starts smiling and the head bobs start with the swaying!!! LOVE IT!!! Just goes to show still as powerful as EVER. Thanks for reacting to this. Brought back great memories and remembered yesteryear friends.
Thank you for your reaction. Since you seem to appreciate old school music, I hope you would react to The Carpenters (from the 70s) and many of their songs. I hope you would react to their song, "Close To You" from 1970. Thank you again. 🙂☕
kudos to you both, its the first time I’ve seen a reaction to this song ( and ive seen many) with out interruption, you just both listened with out pausing the video and having to comment , you left them to the end, as it should be,
Absolutely appreciate that y'all included the introductory dialog. SOOOO many reactors express confusion as to why to song is a solo performance by the Rightous Brothers.
Thanks for including the set-up in the beginning with Andy and the two of them. I finally found and watched the movie the song was in "Unchained" which gives the context of a guy in prison, wanting to escape to get back with the lady he'd been with, but afraid he was going to loose her, that she wouldn't wait for him to get out.
It's very easy anyone to love and appreciate this song. But, what only those of us of that mid 1960's high school experience can grasp was that it came on the heels of the Vietnam War buildup and all of those uncertainties, coupled with the wonderful era of high school dances, and slow dancing with that special girl or guy that you may have been envisioning as someone with whom you wanted to spend a lifetime. No matter how often this song is played, the overwhelming feelings of that unique and transitional time of life come back like the swelling waves of the tide rolling in.
The Righteous Brothers are so good they are timeless. Bobby Hatfield died in Kalamazoo MI on tour with Bill, in his hotel room at age 63, in 2003. i was shocked, that was only 60 minutes from my house. Apparently Bobby's mpm was in the audience and he was singing it to her.
This was a Live performance in 1965 on The Andy Williams Show, and BEFORE auto tune and without other computer assisted gizmos. Just pure raw talent. Also, his mother was in the audience and this was her first time at a live performance. A strong, always controlled 3 octave range with spot on tone quality and makes it look easy hitting those high notes that sopranos struggle to hit! Made all of us ladies back in the weak kneed with melting hearts. Also, back in the day, the audiences were more reserved to show respect to the performer and in this case to get all the lyrics and full affect of hearing that voice. Bobby, RIP, owns this song.
Check out both 'brothers' (not really brothers) on You've Lost That Loving Feeling, and Soul and Inspiration. Loving Feeling was the most recorded son in the 20th century, but the Righteous Brothers had, by far, the best version. Unchained Melody is my favorite but the other 2 are fantastic also.
Besides hearing Bobby Hatfield sing the heck out of this song, I loved seeing the smiles on both of you as you watched his performance. Thank you. 👏👏🇨🇦
If you listen to him speaking he was struggling to breath had a bad cold was told not to sing But his parents where their and they'd never herd him sing He was worried about hitting the high note at end why you see him smile
If you guys want a different kind of music reaction, which I think you will like, it's a very deep & meaningful performance, and no one has ever done a reaction video to it, and once you watch it, you will know exactly what I am talking about. The video is Pearl Jam Light Years Live at Pinkpop 2000
This TV performance was in 1965, but the song had been around since its first presentation in a prison movie, titled "Unchained," in 1955. So many artists have covered it, but none as well as Bobby Hatfield in this live version. Great selection, KnK!
During Bobby's singing this song, it was note that Bobby was nervous because his mother was in the audience during this show. Older gentleman standing between Bill and Bobby was Andy Williams. Andy Williams was well-known singer a crooner from the 40's to 50's era. His well-known signature song is Moon River.
I’m 78 and listened to the Righteous Brothers all of the time. When I heard Bob sing this after all of these years I cried for the long lost love I missed out on. He has the greatest voice of all time. Sings it better than Elvis. Another great video and song Is All in the name with Barry Gibb and Michael Jackson. Just wanted to be a mom to Michael and show him a mother’s love for her children. Miss him and his music.
I was in my teens when this song was popular, And I got to say this song would melt the Panty's off a nun. One of the best songs sung to this day for a romantic night.......
Bobby Hatfield's rendition of that song was classic. As others have said here, check them out singing together "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" and "Soul and Inspiration". Bill Medley's voice is deep deep and the two complement one another.
A TIMELESS MASTERPIECE ❤

We had beautiful music back in the day. Clean cut music that inspired the world.
CAN YOU BELIEVE A PERFORMANCE LIKE THIS FROM BOBBY HATFIELD BACK IN 1965

Bobby was 25 yrs old. We called them "blue eyed soul". They are in the rock hall of fame.
Amazing live performance.
WE REALLY REALLY NEED TO BRING THIS BACK 😊😊😊
Thank you for playing the whole song and not pausing it!
Both of you did great. No big interruptions etc. Great smiles. More of what this world needs.
The greatest performance in history .
Her smile got wider as she listened, and how could you not smile listening to such a voice.
This is what you call a real voice. Back then there was no machines or any kind of help to make you sound good. Bobby Hatfield made this song great!
One of the best LIVE performances EVER!!! Amazing talent!!!
👍you´re absolutely right !!!💯%
💯
Da stimmte 😊ALLES.❤❤
This guy had a lot going for him. Great singer, he wrote his his own music. But few know he was
a gifted athlete as well.

The one and only Bobby 'blue eyes soul' conducted into the music hall of fame at the age of 25 .
Very well put 👏
No auto tune no lip syncing no voice over ! Raw talent
Good to see the video with the introduction - people usually miss this one.
I'm 69yr old and have listened to it every since it came out in 1965
Me too! 🇨🇦
Bobby Hatfield.....rare talent. Bill Medley too.
Live and no autotune. Wow!
One of the top live performances in music history
Live, one take, no auto-tune! Simply a great singer. Loved your reaction.
And none of todays fancy sound devices to enhance his voice....... It was all him. Perfection.......And HEART...
loved them since i was a young girl, i am 65 now, still love them!

Great reaction my friends.
Absolutely flawless performance ! Live !! You just don’t see that anymore !!
This Is Bobby's song...period.
Nobody ever did it better.
Nobody will ever do it better.

soo true!...it doesn't get any better than this
That last note was righteous 💯🎶
Yes grew up living the Rightous Brothers. You have to listen to Soul and Inspiration and You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling where they both sing
Soul music knows no boundaries! Thx!
Definitivamente los años 50 60 70 y 80 los mejores años cuando se hacía música perfecta y melodía desencadenada es una de ellas

Great reaction! This is my late wife's and mine 'song".
You're lucky. My wife and I met in a club when a song came on and she asked me to dance. So our song is "Donkey Butt".😆
