And Bobby just got over a cold.
1965. Live. No autotune. just something lacking in so many of today's singers--TALENT. His mother was in the audience, and he was getting over a cold, believe it or not. In his grave now for two decades, and STILL making womens' hearts flutter...today they would be throwing undies at him on the stage...
21 different notes he went through on this performance,and it's still far and away the best version of this song.

Bobby was a countertenor. That's how he could hit those high notes so effortlessly while suffering from head congestion, nervousness because his parents were in the audience for the first time and out of breath from the previous song. You could hear how out of breath he was when they were talking but that seemed to instantly disappear when he started singing.
Like a pro athlete, he seemed to welcome the challenge. I can't say enough great things about Hatfield's talent and skill. Bill Medley was no slouch either.

counter tenors have a higher range but higher clarity in their voice when they are singing higher notes like bobby, he's not doing a falsetto at the end of the song thats his actual voice coming out naturally instead of being forced out like a falsetto
That comment about it not being a hit was just stage-play … they both liked the song but recorded it as an album cut … it was Bobby’s solo and never intended for two voices. Bobby had a huge vocal range (B2 to Ab6) so he was well within his range here (G5). He was a counter tenor and did not need to go to falsetto. Bill is a Bass-baritone and their ability to blend those two disparate voices is amazing.
Awww....the late Bobby Hatfield. I was 15 yrs old when I watched him sing this beautiful song on the Andy Williams show in 1965. Bobby owns this song. SUCH A CLASSIC! RIP BOBBY! We miss your beautful voice. 💖😢🙏

The Andy Williams Orchestra was killing it with their beautiful string section and horns. Add the great voice of 'Bobby Hatfield' of the 'Righteous Brothers.' It is no wonder why this live performance done back 57 years ago in 1965 is considered by many in the music and television industry as the greatest live performance ever! The rest as they say is history.
I love doing this watching today’s youth, listening to the musical catalog of my life…. As an old salt I know these songs like the back of my hand so I know when the juicy parts are coming up and I get so excited to see your reaction. Bill was kidding when he said he didn’t think it was going to be a hit. They flipped a coin because they both wanted to sing it on one of their albums.
It’s only recently that I saw this live performance. The more dramatic ending blows away the studio recording which came out when I was 21.
As of a few years ago, Bill was still doing shows. I saw in an interview with him from about four years ago and he talked about a special cover of it in the show that he dedicates to Bobby.
The coin flip is also a joke which became a rumor. In an interview with them Bobby Hatfield stated that he sang this song with his original group The Variations and that "I had that one in my pocket".
I am 81 and have heard several artists before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of their albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we know. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.
Bobby had a cold when he sang this song here but he wanted to get it right for his mum that was in the Audience,i think we can safely say that he managed it !😍👏👏👏👏👏
The Righteous Brothers were great! But Bobby Hatfield was the best. Listen to him singing Ebb Tide or Summertime or Somewhere. All show his range and beautiful natural talent. Reacting to both of them try Soul and Inspiration, You've Lost That Loving Feeling or Rock and Roll Heaven.
This practically flawless 1965 performance of a 1955(!) prison movie ("Unchained"), still "knocked a lot of people out." A video of Mr. Hatfield's rendition needs to be put in the National Music Treasury of the Library of Congress. Catch a chopped up version of Bobby's studio version in the movie "Ghost."

His brother (not related ) Bill Medley was not jealous; he produced the song, saying only Bobby's voice could sing that song.
You are about the first part,but they both wanted to docit and flipped a coin. They also made a pact in beginning that on each album they would take turns doing a solo. We are so fortunate to have these videos .

Medley said it in an interview this month on utube. Anyone can read his book also. But he did also say no one could sing it like Bobby.

Bill Medley has offered much accurate authoritative information and he has also said some things which were contradictory to other things he has said and to what Bobby Hatfield has said, including about Bobby's choice of "Unchained Melody". Yes, Bill said many things in his book -- after Bobby has gone and can't say his side of the story of a complicated relationship. Many of us have seen, read, and researched and reject some of what Bill has said. One can and will believe what one chooses. I believe Bobby saying that the song was his choice -- which Bill has said, including as he humbly sincerely stated in an interview with them just before Bobby left his life in "The Righteous Brothers" on the Jeff Kreiner RUclips channel that he sang "Unchained Melody" with his original group The Variations and that "I had that one in my pocket". 🎶✨

Bobby was 25 in 1965 when this was recorded. The song is from a 50s prison movie called "UNCHAINED." The real reason Bobby recorded the song himself was because they had broken up for a while when the song was recorded. They later got back together. They are in the rock & roll hall of fame. It was a couple of black marines in the bar who gave them their name. Bobby died in 2003 and kept his beautiful voice right to the end. RIP Bobby Hatfield.

Those very last 4 notes was not on the cut record, Bobby told Bill he was going to do it that night live and Bill warned him if he missed it will blow the whole thing, Bobby did it anyway and then you see that little grin at the end, he knew he nailed it.

Back in the 1950s I bought the version by Al Hibbler. Much as I enjoyed it I have to say that when I heard Bobby........ Well, it was and still is his. Superb!

I loved Liya's reactions to Bobby hitting the high notes; amazement and pure joy. This is how music should be experienced; especially terrific music like this. My mom exposed me to their music while I was growing up and I love it. She always told me the Righteous Brothers were her favorite artist of all time.

I view this song as the Ghost song. They used it in Ghost with Patrick Swazee and Demi Moore. Great movie and this song was incredible in the movie. Go watch it if you haven’t seen it yet.

If you notice at the beginning of this when Bobby was talking how he was out of breath and sweating, I read he was shy and had a hard time speaking publicly but was fine when it came to singing. I first heard this22 years ago when I was 17 as dad had the golden oldies on and it stopped me cold, I could not believe what I was hearing, to me it is the greatest love song ever and live performance ever.

Don't worry you guys are not the first to be knocked out when you hear that performance for the first time. Way back, and I mean way back when I heard that song for the first time (at 24-25) it rocked my socks. One of the original "panty-dropper" songs of all time.
This 1965 version is hot because of voice and voice control over falsetto, phrasing, diction, body motion and using something many well-known singer do not use or do not use well--big Smiles.
As others have pointed out, Bill was joking about why Bobby did this song alone, They each did solos on their albums and they flipped a coin to see who got to do this one. Bobby won and so did the world! The producer (the famous/infamous Phil Spector) was the one who had no faith in the the song. He wouldn't even produce it, so Bill did He put it on the B-side of the single "Hung On You." Fortunately, the radio disc jockeys started flipping the record over. Once it became a hit, Spector changed the producing credit on future copies of it to take credit for producing it, even though he didn't.

Hes an opera singer level/quality counter tenor...its called a counter tenor voice, its different from a soprano.....also, he was nervous bc his mother & sister were in the audience, & sometimes anxiety helps u....also, they had a very reasonable expectation the song would be a hit, that was a joke, the other righteous brother couldnt sing the song because he was a baritone
Back in those days you had to have talent. Because if you didn't you were out. No auto-tune no voice synthesizers none of that stuff because it didn't exist. Hadn't been invented yet.
I don't know how you could listen to any of todays noise and call it music after hearing real talent like this. All the autotune , splicing and computer twiging highlight what low talent hacks are preforming today. Stand up, don't accept it anymore. Don't support them. Bring back real music.
