carole webber Bobby Hatfield died in a motel room in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the night before a show. Bill Medley still lives, but since losing his singing partner (Bobby), his career hasn’t been the same. They got their name from a black Chicago DJ who would exclaim after their records played “That’s RIGHTEOUS, Brother!”, and the name stuck. It wasn’t until later people realized these Southern California blue-eyed soul singers were white.
I was 13 when this song was a hit on the radio. Now I'm watching young people react to what I've known all along. The late, great Bobby Hatfield sings this love song like nobody else can. Miss you so much Bobby.

Bobby Hatfield's version back in 1965 has become the quintessential version of them all. Here he is singing live (1965) on the Andy Williams show. This is an epic performance by Bobby Hatfield of the 'Righteous Brothers' who has hit 20 notes on one of the greatest songs ever written. Alex North wrote the music (1910-1991) and Hy Zaret wrote the lyrics (1907-2007). Their song was used as the soundtrack for the film 'Unchained' (1955). Todd Duncan who sang the song in the movie was an African American opera singer, actor and professor at Howard University. He was the first to sing 'Unchained Melody. Since 1955 almost every major recording artist from around the world have recorded 'Unchained Melody.' Making it one of the most recorded songs in the history of music. It wasn't until the performance of 'Unchained Melody' by Bobby Hatfield in 1965. That his quintessential version would go on to be the version every artist has used and uses today. That version you are watching here on You Tuber 'THEJAYJSHOW.
I am so proud to be of the same generation as the Righteous Brothers. Blue eyed soul. They were and are the greatest in the 20th century or any other century.
So glad my parents introduced me to all kinds of music at a young age. I've also did this for my kids and they listen to all kinds as well. Kudos for going outside the box and checking out other music... guess what? The whole world has different music!!
He was so handsome. I was 15 yrs old when I watched him sing this beautiful in 1965 on the Andy Williams show. I melted and fell in love with him. OMG this was Bobby song! RIP Bobby! 💞💞💞
According to Bill Medley (He is the tall one of the duo) , they adopted the name "The Righteous Brothers" for the duo because black Marines from the El Toro Marine base started calling them "righteous brothers". At the end of a performance, a black U.S. Marine in the audience would shout, "That was righteous, brothers!", and would greet them with "Hey righteous brothers, how you doin'?" on meeting them.
@@cardiac19 Yes! It IS true! I summarized what Bill Medley said in his book, "The Time of My Life: A Righteous Brother's Memoir". You can read an actual excerpt from the book here: books.google.com/books?id=8pX_AgAAQBAJ&pg=PA12#v=onepage&q&f=false The relevant part starts with the last 2 paragraphs of page 11. I'm 70, and despite growing up in a small town where the only thing that was "Black" were a few cats and a crayon in your box of crayolas, I always enjoyed R&B and soul music. Of course I had a great teacher, my Dad. In the late 50's an older sister's class was going to put on a "Minstrel Show" (which was a big thing back then). My Dad wouldn't let her participate. When the school asked him why he said, "because it is being disrespectful to them."
Bobby Hatfield was incredibly talented. What a GREAT high tenor voice. The voice control, the range, the tone, intonation, phrasing is just unbelievably good & he makes it look easy.
This is my favorite song of all time. Bobby Hatfield is a legend and nobody has come close to replicating this timeless masterpiece in all of these years. Check out You've lost the loving feeling by the righteous brothers. Their dynamic was astonishing.
One of my favorite songs. My mama passed away four years ago and my brother downloaded RUclips for my dad and he played this everyday and turned it up! He would sit there and cry. He misses the love of his life! They were married 60yrs.
I love this song! My favorite performance of all time! And I am 76 and still get the chills the way I did the very first time I heard it, over 50 years ago.
I'm no stranger to this song, but experiencing you hear it for the first time was like listening to it the first time myself. Thank you for tapping into the joy.
I don't know if anyone else here said it, as I haven't read all the comments yet, but that is so called blue-eyed soul. It is indeed wonderful when we all can share the soul, regardless of our color or ethnicity. Excellent review!
They called this Blue Eyed Soul back in the day. This song actually came out in 1955 for a prison movie called Unchained. At the time there were three other versions on the top 40 charts. Righteous Brothers cover was the 4th cover. Unchained Melody is the most requested song of the 20th century. That performance showed his true talent.....no auto tune back then if you couldn’t sing you didn’t make it in the business. They sang it on the Andy Williams Show and Andy asked them why Bobby Hatfield was singing it by himself and Bill Medley said because he didn’t think it would become a hit. They toured the bars in Southern California near the Naval Bases and one night after singing a sailor yelled at them “That was righteous brother” and that’s how they came up with their name. That is the song that was sung in the movie Ghost with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. If you wNt to hear Bill Medley sing a solo watch the movie Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. The song is Time of Your Life it plays in the final dance scene of the movie....I guarantee you’ll love it !
This is one o' the songs of my teen years that always brought about a "TURN IT UP!" and all conversation stopped till it was over. (said to whomever was holding the transistor radio.)
No overreaction here, Jayy. One can't help but fall in love with Bobby's voice....and to think he was so shy when he had no reason to be. Thanks for your reaction.... can't wait to hear your next one. Take care and be well, Jayy! Peace.
I watched this live on The Andy Williams Show in 1965 with my folks.. I was 15. I still have have all the 78 vinyls they recorded. That was when music had something to say to the heart and soul, it touched your inner being. if music doesn't touch you in that eternal place, then it's just noise. and noise is gladly forgotten. real music is timeless.
Put this against the backdrop of the times - The Vietnam Nam War Bobby was giving a voice to the hearts and minds of the guys and gals serving and fighting a war in a far off country. Some of these young people came home in body bags or flag draped coffins. Each night on the news America would get an update of the lives lost in Vietnam Nam. We would often see the body bags and the coffins off loaded on the Tarmac and watched as grieving families waited to be saluted and given the flag that had been draping their loved ones coffin. This song is also evocative of the many, many personnel who got Dear John (or Jane) letters while fighting in a war, wondering if they would make it out alive, and hoping they would come back to a girlfriend or wife that was still theirs, waiting with open arms. When Bobby sings so plaintively and soulfully about needing love it breaks my heart knowing that so many died in vain without a loved one by their side. In short - This song brings tears to my eyes for the shear joy and pleasure of Bobby's talent. It makes me fall in love with Bobby, his angelic vocals, and with love itself. But it also transports me back to the Vietnam Nam era and makes me cry for the lost souls, the ones that lost their lives, and the ones that came back to derision, hate, dismissive attitudes, long years of physical rehab, PTSD, and loneliness.
This was from my generation and we listened to them always....At 70 years of age just hearing this makes my heart swell....and brings back so many memories!!! :'(
On most of their albums the two guys who made up the “Righteous Brothers,” Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, would each do an individual song. This just happens to be one that Bobby did by himself. In fact, both guys wanted to record it individually. The “story” goes that Bobby apparently won a coin toss and it became his song. Years later Bill said he was grateful he lost.
Lol, my mother said she conceived my older sister to this song. She loved the the Righteous Brothers. Her favorites song though was "You Lost that Loving Feeling".

Whenever I’m at Ft. Benning, GA. the TWO most important monuments I visit are ‘Iron Mike” in front of Infantry Hall and the Ranger Memorial across the street. Sitting on that bench by the pond is so relaxing. Sadly, every Ranger Reunion I’ve attended, there are fewer and fewer of us. I remember the reunion when then Col. (now Lt.Gen.) Votel took command of the Ranger Regiment and during that ceremony the Rangers changed from the Black Beret to the Tan Beret. (courtesy of Gen. Shenseki). We retirees and “old timers”😉😳👀 stood in formation with the current active duty Rangers all in Black Berets. Upon receiving the order from Col. Votel to change from Black to Tan Berets. Everyone removed their Blacks and put on the Tans. Then us old guys immediately switched back to Black. You see, we EARNED the Black not the Tan. You can’t just GIVEAWAY the Beret. Once the Army decided to GIVE the Black Beret to every Tom, Dick and Harry or Harriet. I stopped wearing my Black Beret after that. Once again thank you Gen. Shenseki.
RIP Bobby! 💞💞💞
RUclips search " The History of Unchained Melody". Written in 1955 with many covers, but Bobby's is the greatest. RIP Bobby. 🙏✌💝😇
Big Jack - my brother has an old 78 record of Al Hibler singing this. I think he was the first.
God bless you lady. Many people consider this the best solo vocal ever recorded. May your path always rise up to greet you!
Yes, because before they were known as the Righteous Brothers, they were known as the Paramours.
AFmedic6871 That’s beautiful.
AFmedic6871 is that true? I’d never known that. Sweet.
@@cardiac19 Yes! It IS true! I summarized what Bill Medley said in his book, "The Time of My Life: A Righteous Brother's Memoir".
You can read an actual excerpt from the book here:

I'm 70, and despite growing up in a small town where the only thing that was "Black" were a few cats and a crayon in your box of crayolas, I always enjoyed R&B and soul music. Of course I had a great teacher, my Dad. In the late 50's an older sister's class was going to put on a "Minstrel Show" (which was a big thing back then). My Dad wouldn't let her participate. When the school asked him why he said, "because it is being disrespectful to them."
AFmedic6871 that’s super cool. Thx.
They WERE some absolutely a couple of RIGHTEOUS Brothers.
Love watching her loving this, knowing the big vocal is coming at the end.
You've lost that loving feeling is actually the most requested and played song of the 20th century.
Welcome to my youth. I am 65 and the music was awesome. Please listen to all their music. They could sing!
Admittedly, this man is a damn doll, he's beautiful
Im 69 - I remember the Righteous Bros. well - That song and Bobby Hatfield singing it always brought tears to my eyes, it's so emotional & beautiful.
Bobby is now singing for the angels. They are lucky....Great reaction
They (The Righteous Bros) did "Rock and Roll Heaven"....it was prophetic, because Bobby is there now.
It is soulful and romantic! I love dancing to it with my husband in the family room! Always calming and beautiful. 😻
And that's Live!!!
He had an amazing voice...
youll never here music like this again absolute CLASSIC
One of my favorite songs. My mama passed away four years ago and my brother downloaded RUclips for my dad and he played this everyday and turned it up! He would sit there and cry. He misses the love of his life! They were married 60yrs.
I love this song! My favorite performance of all time! And I am 76 and still get the chills the way I did the very first time I heard it, over 50 years ago.
Love watching people's reaction to these classics for the first time....
It’s fun seeing these young people reacting to the music that we kids of the sixties were lucky to grow up with.
Live orchestra..live vocals..this is as good a performance as ever performed!
Notice every word is perfectly enunciated!
Her facial and emotional response was very, very beautiful and precious
That's one of the most beautiful songs ever sung by a wonderful singer
This was always the #1 of all time song on our oldies station yearly countdown. It’s so beautiful.
I'm no stranger to this song, but experiencing you hear it for the first time was like listening to it the first time myself. Thank you for tapping into the joy.
NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU LISTEN TO THIS SONG, IT WILL ALWAYS BRING A TEAR IN YOUR EYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely in my top 10 of all time BEST songs ever written.
To hear them together at their best, "Soul & Inspiration"
I love watching the ladies as they listen to the music and how sometimes they swoon.
Put this against the backdrop of the times - The Vietnam Nam War
Bobby was giving a voice to the hearts and minds of the guys and gals serving and fighting a war in a far off country.
That really fills in the story, thanks!
Soulful Rhythm and Blues !
Nights in White Satin- The Moody Blues
Gives me goosebumps everytime
The orchestra is absolute perfection too.
Your reaction to this song brought tears to my eyes. The oldies are SO good.
Blue eyed soul blessed by God for our listening pleasure and he now sings amongst the Angels.
Lol, my mother said she conceived my older sister to this song. She loved the the Righteous Brothers. Her favorites song though was "You Lost that Loving Feeling".
Yes he reaches more than 2 full octaves.. and PERFECTLY.... I'm a 66 year old ex ranger, anti-terrorist specialst and this tears me up EVERY SINGLE time I hear it..
Hey brother, there is no such thing as an EX-Ranger. No matter where you go or what you do, you’ll always be a Ranger. RLTW.
@@rodneyclark4425 AGREED-- but I say it that way to appease the NON- rangers that pitch a fit when I say I'm a 66 year old ranger!! :) and THANKS for reminding..

I’ve been on my “Bucket List” trip and am close to finishing it. Now, as I reach my 75th (😉🇺🇸👀) year in 3 days I’m getting everything together. The best time of my life has been as a Ranger. We are not Ex-Rangers. We will ALWAYS BE Rangers. RLTW and Sua Sponte are not just words, phrases or mottos. We lived, bled and died by those words.
Shenseki.
OMG David I just had a case of verbal diarrhea. Thought I smelled something old and foul. Rangers Leas The Way. amigo. Always have, always will.
Gives me chills every time. You may remember this song was used in the movie “Ghost”.
