I remember when my mom adopted me she had a van with a cassette player. I was 6 years old and no kidding had never seen a cassette tape. I fell in love with them and to this day, I'm almost 32, I still have them

Pro tip from an 80s baby, you can use any cassette to record, you do not have to use a blank one. Put tape over the Write protection notch (there is two), that's it! So, any old tape you find at a thrift store, or a lot on eBay. It's what I did as a kid, because I didn't have a lot of money. The notches are on the very top skinny side, you can also just look up the anatomy of a cassette tape to figure it out 😉.

Up until a few years ago, I had quit using mixtapes, but then I picked them back up out of nostalgia. I have no regrets. The majority of them feature goth music by artists like Clan of Xymox, symphonic, and classical music.

This is how we had to make mixes back in the 80s. The other thing I would do is steal a friend's store bought tape of an album, get the CD of the album, and record it back on to their tape in the wrong order, and put it back in the case. My friend thought he was going crazy.

Wow, that was amazing! Thanks, Madi! Man, this was a slingshot back into the past! This is probably gonna be a long, rambly comment. Have you checked out _Cassette Cult_ on BangerTV? Lots of reviews from Sarah Kitteringham (singer for Smoulder - they're killer!) on that playlist, and also on BangerTV's playlist _Overkill Reviews: Sarah Videos_ . So, in the 80s, my brother and I used Maxell, TDK, TEAC for taping. Memorex was around, but I don't recall us using that brand. CrO2 (chromium dioxide) tape was a go-to sometimes. If I remember, the advantage was that it lasted longer over multiple playings, but it compressed the sound more than iron oxide. I could be wrong about this. You also needed a ghetto blaster or tape deck that specified CrO2 in order to be able to record and play back. A couple of veteran Gen X tips: are you lost in a post-apocalyptic wasteland with no tape rewinder? Use a pencil or Bic pen in the sprockets! Also, have you popped out the plastic tabs on the top edge of the cassette and want to record over? No problem! Just tape over the square holes with Scotch tape and it's ready to re-record! 👍

Hey, I have been long awaiting a new video! You are right about the difficult with finding Cassette players, I recently looked into it and it turns out that almost all manufactures have completely stopped manufacturing them except for like one company out of Japan. The price of a lot of Cassette Player decks now, even used ones have a high premium, like $300-$500 sometimes because of how rare they are to come across now! I have a couple of old units myself, one still fully working but the others need replacement rubber belts. I see how you are using vintage Sony equipment! I believe that tape deck you have there is from the 80's, those were when all Sony stereo items were made really well, I still run a lot of stuff from that time and they are built to last forever. Your Sony deck is better than the one I have though.

For better sound try the Maxell , Sony, TDK Chrome High Bias tapes or Maxell Cobalt Metal type ll, lll and type lV tapes. I use to mix a lot of tapes back in the day. These tapes just sound better. But, you have to have the High Bias or Metal tape buttons on your tape player to take full advantage of the better sound quality. Still these tapes just last longer. Keep your tape heads ckean and demagnatized with a tape head cleaner and pinch rollers cleaning kit before recording on your tape players for better sound and your tapes want crinkle up so easy.

Actually vinyl sound is really cool, but cooler is hi-fi sound, although its too expensive. I know fuck this system, and thats cool what you make with tapes, perhapse its more creative and interesting to design tapes to feel them different way.
