- March 1 | Budget Committee Chairman Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) joins a press conference with Senate Democratic leaders detailing the real-world effects of a federal budget modeled after the one written by Trump’s budget director, Russell Vought. Vought’s budget uses the word “woke” 77 times, and cuts Medicaid, SNAP, college affordability programs, ACA tax credits, and disability programs.

Preach, Sheldon. There's no such thing as 'woke'. Liberalism is a gut reaction to a feeling that the system is unfair, not an ideology. What the GOP really means when they say 'woke' is 'undesirables' and/or 'against the red state'. I wish them luck w/their secession.
Actually....it's SLANG..it's been said for years + years...I'm always amazed when words are "picked through" to "help" with an agenda...words are so easy to explain.
All my life Conservatives have been looking for the shortest words and phrases to express everything they hate about the people who are living in the modern world. They've long preferred slogans that were six syllables or less. "Just say no," and "Make America Great," are two of many examples packing maximum meaning into a minimum of language. But, a one-syllable phrase to encompass any progress since the 1950s had eluded them all the way until the first half of 21st century when conservatism finally turned into a cult. Now, one word is sufficient to rule them all.

After Social Security has been in place for 50+ years they want to call it an entitlement. SS IS AN EARNED BENEFIT!!! We worked for this! And, in addition to that, if the ultra wealthy and big corporations aren't paying their FAIR share of taxes, then that burden is disproportionately placed upon the less fortunate (whom, BTW, pay FAR MORE in percentage of their income than the whiny, greedy rich do)! Oh wait, THAT'S basically what you said you'd vote for: the poor being forced to cover wealthy people's tax debts!

Perhaps the most intelligent legislator currently in the Senate | RI & all of America is fortunate to have such a dedicated & deeply knowledgeable public servant - his work on the Committee of the Judiciary might, just might - result in much needed SCOTUS Reform & his work on the Committee of Environmental & Public Works again, might - if we pay attention & engage with our own Senators & House members - save the planet.
He's certainly correct about the need to reverse the 2010 Citizens United SCOTUS decision.

Taking less from you (assumption: you are in the income bracket affecting by permanent tax cuts) hurts the rhetorical me by ensuring my taxes continue to rise in future to make up the shortfall in revenue caused by your tax cuts.
Ways to cut spending:
End Federal subsidies to Fossil Fuel & other Industries. End paying cost overruns on contracted military hardware. End private contractor employment on jobs military personnel historically performed, such as maintenance/Code compliance remodeling to Base housing.
End subsiding flood insurance for homes/businesses built in flood-prone areas.
End taxpayer subsidies of corporations, i.e. corporations that pay employees so little that full time employees still qualify for social assistance, by tax surcharge to recover the full amount paid by gov't assistance.

(I feel like I'm repeating myself over and over again and no one is listening.) In Buddhism, enlightenment roughly means "I am awake". Enlightenment is "education or awareness that brings change." Thus, the phrase "woke" is not a bad thing, but a positive. Republicans use the term "woke" to give a negative connotation when they do not want change or desire changes to benefit them personally. We should stay "asleep" and not change things, in their minds. If there are 77 "woke" items in this budget, it means we are heading towards a better future for ALL of us. Keep going, Sen. Whitehouse! I remember in PoliSci, when we were introduced to the term "reactionary" (re: Greece '68) and we couldn't quite grasp the concept- (it's not conservative nor libertarian...?)
After a barrage of Q's from us clueless students the Prof finally explained "Remember how I've explained that the natural course of politics swings from left to right like a pendulum? Ok, well sometimes there are groups who've felt things have gone much too far, who resent the social progress their culture has made. They feel left behind...
These are "reactionaries"
Their entire goal is to claw back any & all progress society has made (in Greece '68, they even passed laws about the mandatory length of a women's skirt!).
After clawing back all social & cultural progress, reactionaries then seek to weld the natural occuring political pendulum into place- Their goal is to permanently fix society/culture way, way to the right so that no progress is possible, not even an inch, ever again.
Today, my class would know exactly what "reactionary" meant because it is easily identifiable- A reactionary is anyone who uses the term "woke" unironically.

Always a pleasure to listen to Senator Whitehouse on issues that's actually affect the lives of Americans. It's a little weird that I've never seen Sen. Sanders and Whitehouse team up on stuff.
