  • Before I could fly the final leg home from Nashville, I discovered an issue with my brakes while I was getting ready to depart Windsor. Thankfully the good folks at WCS Aviation there were able to patch me up so I could make the final flight to get home. Join me as they fix the brake problem and I fly home under the low clouds, trying to stay VFR to give myself some flexibility.

Dave and the guys at WCS are top notch. They have helped out immensely with our Cherokee over the last couple years.

They really are. Did we meet when I was there? I met a local pilot outside WCS, but I forgot his name.

Great trip and glad the folks in Windsor helped you out. I know what you mean about breaking down on the road. The only time it happened to me was when I was flying home from Peterbourough and I decided to stop in Kitchener for dinner and top up the tanks. When it was time to leave I noticed a large puddle of fuel underneath the airplane and was coming from the belly drain and elected to leave the aircraft there as there was no maintenance personnel available. As luck would have it I ran into a fellow pilot from my home base and he offered to fly me home. During his run up the left mag was running very rough and he was unable to clear the fault. We ended up renting a car to get home that day.

Wow that’s quite the story. So unfortunate the both your planes went down at once but thankfully it was while still on the ground!

In the 3 years of owning my Sierra I had to redo both sides of the master cylinders. Both had me rolling along and needed a new o ring kit. I SHOULD get my plane back this week after the audio panel went out and while it was there had it do the prop eddy current test and the IFR recert. This last 4 months has cost me over 10k in repairs. Roughest year on record for my Sierra. Glad you are up and rolling.

Hey brother aviator, I came on over and subscribed on recommendation of "The Rusty Pilot." This was very informative from the maintenance standpoint. Keep flying high. Fly well!

If you ever want a fool proof way of bleeding brakes, do what I did on Cherokees and other small planes. Get some nylon tubing that will fit tight on the end of the bleeder fitting on the caliper. Run a piece of that tube from both calipers up to the reservoir can. (I modified a cap from a similar can and put a tee on top. to hole the upper ends of the tubing) Fix the open ends on the tubing so it runs back into the can. Fill the reservoir to the top line, unscrew the bleed fittings just enough to let fluid pass, but not loose enough to drip on the floor. Now, get in and start with one pedal at a time and pump until you see no bubbles coming through the tubing, move to the next pedal, do both sides if dual brakes, then do the parking brake (if equipped with a cylinder under the panel.) close up the bleed fittings, remove the tubes, and top the fluid if it went below the top line. The tubing I used was fairly stiff and opaque enough to see the 5606 fluid. Gift your favorite mechanic with this set up and you can maybe cut the labor bill in half as one person can do the job instead of two.
BTW, I used to insect a Sierra and one complaint was the left gear was taking much longer to retract than the right side. I took the retract cylinder apart and found someone had installed an o ring of the wrong thickness on the piston. It worked a lot better with the right o ring in it.

Is really a personal airplane flight if nothing goes awry? Glad things are sorted out for you!
