Controllers love pilots like you; no delay on the calls, crisp and clean read-backs, and able to hustle across an active runway without hesitation - the controller knew he could count on you to do that, that’s why he asked - if it was someone else, maybe not. Great video Owen! New subscriber.
I worked near LAX in the 1980s and watched planes from my office window. Smaller planes usually came in high but I never knew why. You explained at 16:40 that you were coming in high and landing long to stay above the previous plane's wake, which makes perfect sense and explains what I saw 40 years ago and didn't know the reason for. Thanks very much for a fine video.
I love the way Owen handles his calls. I can't imagine flying into LAX without experience. Calls between the ATC and pilots are a science into itself. Bravo on a great safe flight Owen.
ATCo from Europe here. You asked yourself, if ATC would prefere you flying IFR or VFR. When you have a slow aircraft between all the airliner jets, you want the slow aircraft as close as possible to the runway threshold, so when you turn the slow guy in, you block the final for the shortest time possible. The easiest way to do that, would be VFR. So yes: From my perspective as an approach controller, I would prefere VFR. Makes things much easier :-)
Smoooooooooth. Impressive situational awareness and incredible job staying ahead of the airplane. This was some of the best I've seen yet on RUclips. Bravo sir!
Im working on my instrument license and this video is actually amazing to hear all the comms, I felt like I was learning a ton because where I fly is nowhere near as busy but I was mentally on top of the comms they gave you , awesome video
@@FlyWithOwen I havent flown too much since the summer because I am about to finish A&P school and about to test for my A&P but once thats all done with I will get back to it, only have my written and a maybe 10 hours left until I am ready for my check ride
This was a masterclass on professionalism, clear and concise radios, situational awareness and mastery of their crafts on behalf of the pilot and the controllers. Take notes, this is how it’s done.
Another great video. It really illustrates the amount of work that a pilot has to do flying into LA. I don’t know who was busier you or your brother. I’ve noticed on your different videos, your sunglasses. Are you rocking Ray Bans’? They could be a good sponsor! Great video. Tomaso 😎🤙🏽
Really impressive how you make and keep the read backs from your mind. I would have to write them down anyway. Beside this a real busy and stressing approach into KLAX. Thank's for letting us joining you!
I really enjoyed this video - much appreciated. I've not flown in LA airspace but plan to soon, so this was really helpful to watch. Thanks for sharing - and for the high quality video and sound too!
The explanation about plane ownership and flight purpose was great. Cleared up a lot of questions I had. Great video. Great adventure. Thanks for posting.
So cal has always been so accommodating for me and whoever I’m Flying around with. As long as you pay attention. A lot of clowns out there not paying attention and they will quickly correct you. Thank you for taking the comms aspect seriously. People entering this world need good examples like this. (They love to keep you in suspense with that last second bravo clearance!)
Thanks for the fun video, Owen. I'm retired from Southwest and haven't heard center conversation for quite a few years. I really enjoyed. I've flown that downwind many a time. Nice job on keeping your speed up. Good flying to you.
Damn that was good! Two points...your experience just shines on this! Second, the torch has been passed. You're wearing the hoodie and Chris the cool printed collared button down 😀Just as life should be sir..... Clear skies🙏
Just did my first solo yesterday. I’m learning out of PHNL Class Bravo and aspiring to be the type of professional you are. Thanks for the inspiration!
Regional rat here. Dude. Your comms and professionalism were surprising and refreshing. Usually it’s amateur hour in 91. Love the “position checks” call. No one bothers to do that anymore
Living the dream young man. I hope you realize how fortunate you are. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your videos. Due to my fear of heights, I had to choose a career law enforcement over being a pilot. I’ve been a aviation enthusiast since a young boy.
Owen is a very talented young pilot; no attitude like the Bonanza ace. Last time I landed at LAX in a private aircraft I was with a fellow named Bob Hoover in a Sabreliner👍
Just moved out of California. Lived just east of Lost Angeles. Crazy busy airspace, for sure! How fun to fly into LAX VFR on that sweet ride!! I'm jealous. LOL Fly safe, sir!
Flew my C182 into LAX several years ago to haul some other pilots from Chino to recover some war birds that were on display at the old West Imperial Terminal. Also did a photo flight using a B-25 as a camera plane back when I was flying second in command in it. I know that class B like the back of my hand. Used to work at LAX back in the 70s and early 80s. Lots has changed since then. I’m surprised they landed you in the north complex since you most likely were going to the FBO on the south side.
I worked at LAX and flew my Cherokee into there just for yuks one time. Too much taxi abuse to do it again though. But it was fun aiming for touchdown 1/3 way down 25L and getting the first high speed. ATC was great. Remember the old commuter terminal / pad where the Bradley building is now. Goldenwest Otters and Shorts skyboxes, and Skywest Metros, and even Cochise Navajos going to the desert. You know back when MD-80s were "quiet." You could get off 25L and climb over the fog bank coming in over the shoreline and go back to TOR VFR. Those were the days.
Great video how GA and commercial can operate together. The challenge is with GA community and their ability to integrate seamlessly into an IFR environment. My feeling is that 90% couldn’t integrate without at least an instrument rating.
First learned of you when you were flying with some guy named Matt. Glad I found you again, AND on your own channel. Great content! Much more interesting.
I remember the 441 Conquest I with Airesearch TPE331's like we had in the MU-2's. You must be flying the Conquest II with PT 6's. Didn't have much time in the turbo-prop PW's.
I work lax approach now, if your vfr and can do 170 or better to the marker all is good, if your slower and you delay a whole lineup of ifr aircraft then you can expect to hold, there are times during the day that you could be delayed also due to traffic volume. Glad you made it in!!!
Based at Compton for several years in the late 1980s. Flew the VFR flyway over LAX but never landed there. Quite the experience overhead LAX at I think 3500 feet jets everywhere. Fun!
I have found flying into KATL, that as a GA aircraft (I fly a Piper Dakota) that we just keep best forward speed and are able to slot us in pretty easy. I normally will file IFR and from the direction I typically arrive, I know I am probably getting 26R or 08L depending on winds (closest runway to Signature FBO to get me off the runway and out of the way of the big boys) and I will file to set me up for vectors to final pretty easy. The biggest thing is keeping track of all the frequencies (LOL).
Saw the turbos, but didn't recognize the plane. First thought it was a 350, but didn't have a high tail. Nice craft. That was fun. I have Flightradar24 to check out the flights coming and going. Thanks!
Nice vid. Crazy what it takes to “park” at LAX 🛬 Spent a lot of time in a friend’s Cessna 401 up and down east coast and Caribbean. I enjoy your IG stories. Saw you fly over many times back when we lived in Los Altos 🛩 keep flying
I guessed right about your approach. I live right at 14:09, which is where the rarely used I-5 approach to LAX used only by props re-merges with the heavily-used I-10 approach used by jets, before you make the turn back toward the airfield. Until recently, I used to see Alaska D8s from MTY and STS fly the I-5 route past Glendale - which must have been the last props serving LAX - so I figured that's how they'd take you. Though if they wanted to, they could probably take you over the airfield, which they do for some HHR approaches. Thanks for the cool video.
Awesome flight I like everything about how you pilot the aircraft. I am a so cal native and always wanted to fly and have with my friend a few times out of POC. I worked at UPS in ONT for years in Flight Operations and i love love love aviation. I was able to understand your communication and I knew location wise where you were and yes I just appreciate it. I live in SBD and always look up to see LAX approach and ONT approach. Enjoy your time flying and will look forward to watching more You have a great job and it shows when you fly.
Nice work keeping composed and flying ahead of the jet. I imagine they would’ve put you on vectors for sequencing regardless of the VFR/IFR -AF Moose Driver

either way you have to sequence them unless you are relying upon visual separation. wake turbulence still exists.

Very nice ride brings back old memories, really enjoyed flying The conquest II. Compliments to your cameraman, very smooth.
What a joy to see a pilot that can talk on the radio. no cringe "request taxi to the active" "this is" "with you"
Wow, what a work load you had there. Excellent video very professional. 👍🏽😎
