So far out of IFR Currency - How did my practice for the IPC go?
A few of you have reached out to ask why I haven't been posting videos lately, and the truth is I haven't even been flying much lately. I made a late career change and have been busy getting that off the ground and just haven't had time for flying - to the point where I lost my IFR currency. Join me as I go up for a quick practice IFR flight, followed by a practice flight with my instructor Allan, to get me back up to speed as I prepare for an IPC in the next few weeks. It...did not go as well as I would have liked!

Chasing Totality - flying toward clearer skies so we can see the eclipse

Like millions across North America, we planned to travel to see the total eclipse in April. 5 easy steps to flying cross-border in a private plane

What does it take to fly your private plane across the border between Canada and the US? As I’m preparing for a flight to Nashville and New Orleans next week, I thought I’d talk through the process in both directions. What's on for 2024?

2023 was a fun but slightly slower flying year for me. I got in a handful of good sized flights, including a bucket list trip. But what's in store for me in 2024 in terms of flying? It's up in the air, and I'm open to suggestions. Join me as I recap 2023 and talk a bit about what I have in mind for the coming year. Flying home VFR from Windsor after a busted brake issue

    • @WingsOverTO
      @WingsOverTO Месяц назад

      Thanks very much, I appreciate you reaching out. It's actually pretty good for crosswind landings. It's a heavier plane than a C172 or something like a Piper Archer or Arrow, so it is more stable and resists the crosswinds a bit better. If the winds are routinely 18-25 and mostly crosswind, you'll certainly get good at it! :) I max out at 25kt winds with a 15kt crosswind component - absolute max for me and only if it's a must - but the plane is rated for a 17kt crosswind.

What I found in an FAQ is that it *will* work with just S-Tec autopilots for now, because those have their own roll/pitch source. So hopefully your Sundowner has an S-Tec already or you're willing to put a used one in, because there are no new S-Tecs certified for our planes.

    Totally agree with the need for ADSB everywhere. I couldn’t imagine flying without it now especially in busy US airspace. I just wish Garmin would come to the plate and offer software updates to add diversity to existing units. Hoping they cave in with pressure from US customers wanting to come into Canada. Great experience as we totally missed the eclipse.

    • @WingsOverTO
      @WingsOverTO 3 месяца назад

      Yeah I really wonder what Canada is going to do about US planes. Because just the software change wouldn’t be enough - you actually need a second roof mounted antenna as well. So that’s an expense that most US pilots just won’t be willing to take on.

    • @terrypedersen7
      @terrypedersen7 3 месяца назад

      It might be wishful thinking but I would not be shocked if a Garmin GTX335 or 345 is the same hardware as a 335D or 345D (diversity to allow two antennas) but has different software to allow so. I am certainly hoping this for my future requirements and will be holding off to see how it plays out. Alternatively possibly Garmin will offer a factory upgrade to modify the units if a hardware upgrade is also required. We just need our neighbours to apply some pressure in numbers.

They turned towards CYOO and made a beeline passing to the right and a bit higher. He made his radio call he's going back and that was it. I was pretty annoyed he didn't even seem to noticed or try and fly further away. Afterwards I thought about it and maybe he only had 1 radio and he was circling to get ATIS. Pretty sure it was a flight school plane though and I thought they all had 2 radios.

    That looked like small snow banks. 😮

      Yup! That caught me by surprise as well. We haven't had snow in Toronto for over a month, so I was not expecting to see it just 90 minutes east of here. Thanks for watching!

    What a fun adventure! Another reason why general aviation is so great!

      Agreed! We would not have been able to do that in a car. Just too far to drive and we wouldn’t have beaten the eclipse there.

    Very thorough preparation, thanks for sharing ! One question about the first departure leg from Toronto : why did you choose inland near the mountains instead of along the east coastal line ?

    • @WingsOverTO
      @WingsOverTO 3 месяца назад

      Thanks! The short answer is weather. I need to cross the mountain range somewhere along that first leg, either north in the adirondacks or further south over the appalachians. At the time I was a VFR pilot only and there were low clouds all across the mountain range til I got further south. So I crossed over West Virginia before making my way further south.

    Nice Video... One thing is for sure... A Sierra flying formation with a Cherokee 140 and a Cessna 150 is a real test of slow flying a Sierra.. Great Job! There certainly is a difference if Airspeeds there!

      Thanks, John! Definitely, and we did not try to keep it close, as you can see.

    I love the Sierra/sundowners- I hit my head on the ceiling in a warrior/archer so I would welcome the increased headroom.

    Great video! My wife and I are planning the same trip in August 2024, any tips would be great. Also were u able to fly VFR all the way from the states?

      @WingsOverTO 3 месяца назад

      Hey Alex, thanks! We were able to fly VFR the whole way but it did involve a lot of waiting around for clouds to clear. So as long as you’re comfortable with that, you should be ok. Keep in mind that in mid summer, Florida and the entire southeastern US coast is prone to a lot of mid-day thunderstorms. So plan to do most of your flying as early in the day as possible, or after sunset. Happy to talk through more tips and share my experience if it’s helpful. Send me an email at wingsoverto@gmail.com.
