Testing the new instrument panel and going for a ground run

- Less than a week to OshKosh, and I'm still waiting anxiously for my instrument panel upgrade to be done. It's touch and go now whether I'll be able to make it. But things are moving now. I went out to the airport to watch the guys work for a bit on configuration and testing the new gear, and we took the plane out for the first ground run.
Looks great! I really like how the panel overlay came out. Best of luck squashing the last few squawks!
Thanks Tim.
Hope it’s ready for you in time. Awesome panel!
Thanks, Ali! Yeah, I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out.
Getting close!!! Positive thoughts that you'll make it to Oshkosh; I'll see you there!
Thanks, Glen! Fingers crossed, but it's looking pretty good so far. Did you settle on the northern route? I think that's what I'm going to take, weather permitting.
@@WingsOverTO Yes, I'm taking the 'Polar Route' over Manitoulin to Sault Michigan - if the weather works out.
I love your airplane I used to fly one just like it about 40 years ago. It is very deserving of a GFC 500 autopilot the effort would be well worth it!
Oh sweet, they really are great planes, aren't they? Not the fastest, but super stable, comfortable and rock-solid build. Yes, the GFC 500 would be an absolutely terrific addition, but it's just a bit out of budget right now! : )
Looks great! The complexity of the installation is insane! I finally got my GNS 430W installed waiting for weather to test fly it…oh! …and a USB card update cable. My old one is damaged and doesn’t work anymore 🙄
Thanks, Richard, yeah it's quite something. I should have known this but never really thought about the fact that with every new item you put in the panel, you have build custom connectors/pigtails/harnesses to hook it all together, and getting every connection right really take a lot of work. The guys forgot that the 650 can send flight plan data to the 430, so they didn't connect that one pin in the connectors on both ends, and now they need to go back and add that in. There's just so much to stay on top of.
Sucks about your Garmin update cable, that's annoying. Those things are not cheap! I hope you get it updated and get up in the air to try out the 430W soon, despite their age they are still terrific devices.
Looks like a very complex install. Looks great. Hopefully you get the plane back in time and able to make the trip to OSH. Take care.
Thanks, Reale. Yeah, it's so much more complicated than I really understood. I'm glad I went out for a bit and watched part of the process, it helps me understand the panel better.
You could always come down to yxu for a flight. Would love to see new install
I've certainly flown over it often enough! I went to grad school there and got a tour of the Diamond factory, and flying in to the airport is definitely on my list. Will let you know when I come down.
@@WingsOverTO great
@@WingsOverTO Let me know as well. Would love to meet and see the new panel too.
Congrats panel is looking good! We just got our TR182 back at the end of May after a 6 month new panel installation in Kitchener. Lots to learn, and for myself anyway, it can only be learned by using it. There will likely be glitches and configuration issues along the way but that’s all part of it and in the end all worth it! Hope you make it to KOSH, we are flying out on Tuesday maybe see you at some of the Canadian events?

Thanks, Peter. Would be great to meet up, but I think I'm going to be flying back on the Tuesday that you're coming into OshKosh. My plan is to head up this Friday afternoon/Saturday morning and stay until Tuesday afternoon. If you do come up early, shoot me a note at wingsoverto@gmail.com
You have a GTX345?
I don’t, I just have a uAvionix TailBeacon for Out, and I use a Garmin GDL52 for In.
Stop talking, just listen to your mechanic guy
I prefer to ask questions to make sure I understand things.
