    That route from Chihuahua to Los Mochis through the Copper Canyon is considered one of the world´s great train rides, on the bucket list of many train enthusiasts. Much like your road, the track clings to the vertical cliffs, crossing spindly bridges and diving through tunnels. I was fortunate to travel that way 40 years ago - it's spectacular countryside!

      Good point, she should have asked the locals, it might be that the auto roads are more dangerous, compared to the less traveled train tracks, and autos probably go alot faster around those corners.

    I've finally completed all your seasons of travel, and am caught up to your current adventure. Watching this, I have to say, you've been in risky and challenging situations before now, and you always seem to approach these conditions with a wary optimism. You seem to move forward with the thought that the potential difficulties ahead should be acknowledged, and precautions taken, but the benefits of exploring these varied landscapes and the cultures that reside within them are worth the uncertainty. That kind of courage is commendable and admirable, in my opinion. Safe riding, Noraly. And here's to enjoying the roads before you, however twisted, rutted, muddy, and breathtaking they might be.

    Hello Noraly. Locals walk the train tracks for two basic reasons. 1- Walking along the train tracks ensures you the shortest route due to its narrow line with the longest possible straight lines and there is no mud, while the roads for vehicles are usually curved like snakes, up to 4 or 5 times more kilometers away.
    2- In the towns it is something very similar, the train is heard at a great distance (you heard that train so far away with the noise of your motorcycle and helmet) and it is more dangerous to walk on streets with vehicles (accidents and robberies). I hope we "arrive" in Canada together every day. See you.

    • @patriciaeternity
      @patriciaeternity 2 года назад +6

      About the "no" danger of walking on the train tracks: The noise of the train engine is naturally very loud, but before you hear the noise of your engine, (which can vary depending on the direction of the wind), you can hear the waves through the metal rails and if you are deaf, you will also notice it by the vibrations on the tracks several kilometers away.

    So nice to see a recent ride through Copper Canyon. The first time I rode through this area was 22 years ago and I’m pleased to see it again. Bridges were rare and river crossings the norm. The roads were a bit narrower sometimes indistinguishable from riverbeds and towns smaller but the beauty of the mountainous area is still fantastic.

  • @duncangrainge

    They walk on the tracks because it’s the most direct route and given that trains can’t climb steep hills , they are generally the most direct and flat route. We used to do it when we lived in northern Greece. Great vid 👍🇬🇧

    I'm glad you made it safely to Urique. Your video brought back memories of my time as a tour guide on Copper Canyon railway tours (on the El Chepe). The train you caught a glimpse off was a freight train crossing likely between Chihuahua and Topolobampo (where also the ferry to Baja departs from). The railroad was only completed in 1961, over 60 years after initial construction. It has 86 tunnels, over 30 bridges and crosses over its own track on its climb from Los Mochis all the way to Creel and beyond to Chihuahua. People use the track as paths because the trains really don't go that fast and there is usually plenty of time to notice them before they're actually seen. Urique is a lot warmer than the higher elevations where the difference in altitude between Urique and nearby Cerocahui is over 1500m. The copper canyon is actually 6 distinct canyons and the area is 4 times larger than the Grand Canyon. Several of the canyons are even deeper with the Urique canyon clocking in at over 1,800m deep.

      Most of the time (but not always), if you respect them, their space, and their territory, they will respect you back, and give you safe passage. A friend of mine has ridden Copper Canyon many times on a motorcycle, and has encountered cartel lookouts on the roads and in towns every time. He knows people in Mexico who can call ahead and let them know he's passing through and it has worked out fine that way. He also says that when they stop him, or even slow him down then flag him on, he will stop and pass out cold beers to all of them as a gesture of peace and respect. So far, he has made many trips through that canyon and never had any problems. Even so, there is no way in the world I would take that risk of riding there, no thanks.

    Thanks for taking us through the Copper Canyon! I went to the deepest part of this canyon near Guachochi a few years ago. I live on the Mexican border near Presidio, Texas. People used to ride that train from here through the Copper Canyon to the Pacific Ocean at Topolobampo. The Copper Canyon is actually several canyons combined. It's over 8000 ft elevation at the top and around 2000 ft near the bottom so it is about 6000 feet deep. It is a tourist destination and I think the danger from the cartels is exaggerated some. They don't want to harm the tourist business or attract international attention by harming tourists. But it is a good thing to be prudent. Batopillas is at the bottom of the Canyon south of Creel and was the second place in Mexico to get electric lighting because of the rich silver mines. I'm thinking of riding my Yamaha 250 there this fall. Thanks Noraly, have fun and be safe.

    I've been going to Mexico for over 10 years crossing in Laredo to Monterrey. You will be fine Noraly as long as they know you are not drug trafficking and only passing thru.. To be honest they probably will not allow anything to happen to you and make sure you make it safely. The reason I say that is because you would be considered a high profile individual and you're a female. The last thing they would want is for something to happen to you in their territory that would draw attention to them. Show respect is the key.
