  • In this episode, I have to replace my tires as my rear tire is too worn to get me through another 2000 kilometers until I reach the USA. I manage to get my hands on some nice tires and off I go into the Baja desert!

This is really cool because two buddies and I were staying in the Iguana motel in Loreto when Noraly, You, rode in! This quaint little motel has been a favorite place to stay when we are in the town, because there's only 4 rooms total and it's very well done. We had two of the rooms already, so seeing You pull in was beyond unbelievable! The odds of an old guy doing a bucket list Baja ride, running into you somehow in the Western Hemisphere was a billion to one!
You were obviously very tired and hot and we made sure to give you your space, but we wanted to visit so badly! We, and our wives, just love your videos, because they are a bit "National Geographic" and a lot of everyday life in these awesome parts of the world. Always very well done. Keep your wonderful spirit Noraly! Ride Safe!
PS, Nice to meet you and to have Alaska parked right beside our humble BMW's! (Brief, but it sure made our trip!)

What a great reflection… I would be just as in awe if I bumped into Noraly during one of her travel around the world… I never got into motorcycles, though I had a 71 300cc Kawasaki as a kid, I fell once and gave up riding, but watching Noraly travel through these small towns, with so many “National Geographic moments” would make me crave the feeling she is experiencing, as a retiree, traveling to parts unknown via delta is amazing…like Noraly says, just get out and explore the world before you cant…..

The giant cacti in the video are Cardon cacti (pachycereus pringlei) and may look similar to the Saguaro of the southern US, but can be larger and can have a lot more arms. The cacti grow quite large with some specimens well over 10m tall. In fact further north you'll likely see taller Cardon cacti. They grow on average about 10cm/year and can live up to 300 years. Thus some of the cacti near the mission of San Francisco Xavier may even be older than the church which was built in 1699 by the Jesuits who also founded Loreto in 1697. Baja was "discovered" for the Spanish crown by Hernan Cortez in 1536, but the Spanish decided not to pursue colonization as they didn't find any silver or gold and found it too tough to survive. The native population was wiped out after contact with Jesuit missionaries in the XVIII century, with the vast majority succumbing to diseases like smallpox to which they had no immunity. Therefore some of these missions were abandoned once the area got depopulated. You can still find vestiges of cave paintings that these original inhabitants left behind, and there are some accessible locations, but you do need to get a permit from the INAH to visit them. You can get a permit to visit La cueva del Raton in San Ignacio. That location is in the Sierra de San Francisco about 30-60 minutes from San Ignacio.

When I was in high school there was an annual race in Baja that was called the Baja 1000. Back then, most of the competitors drove dune buggies made from modified Volkswagens. I dreamed of someday competing in that race, bought an old VW wreck, shortened the chassis/floor pan and mounted a fiberglass body on it. Somewhere along the way, I lost sight of that dream and joined the army in order to fulfill another dream - seeing more of the world. I spent nearly 21 years in the army and did get to see quite a few countries and places, but not all of them. Now that I'm an old man, Noraly has been helping me for months to see many of those countries that I never had an opportunity to see when I was in the army. Thank you, young lady!

For those interested; measuring the the saguaro cactus (in inches) from base to highest point, then divide this number by 10 and you have a pretty good idea of the age of the plant. But for a reasonable estimate just look at whether the plant has developed any arms yet. If it has any, like those in Noraly's video today it will definitely be above the age of 70.

Maxxis Dessert IT tires. Good tires for Baja! Not DOT legal though. Also, slippery on pavement, especially when wet. You plan to replace when cross the boarder. Good plan.
Safe travels Noraly! Will be fun to see your route through the U.S. IF Planning to get to Alaska this summer, you need to get going. Summer is short when you get to the northern parts of North America.

I wouldn't worry too much about DOT compliance with a bike that has NL plates. It's the same with helmets, ECE R22.05 and R22.06 helmets aren't DOT compliant, but it's perfectly legal to wear one in the US as a tourist.
Still if like you said those tyres are sketchy on tarmac and in the wet, it's probably for the best to replace them with a good tyre.

Non DOT tires can be an issue here in the States. Depends on law enforcement she comes across. I’ve had friends run non DOT tires here in California. As far as the sketch factor. Yes, you have to ride accordingly, but doable. Noraly does need to clean up her bad habits. California is the only state you can “Split Lanes.” And you do need to stop at stop signs. I just don’t see her getting to Alaska before snow falls. There’s a saying in Montana “Summer is only 50 days long.” High altitude passes can get snow almost all year. 6,000feet/2,000 meters here in Northern California not unheard of to get snow in September. Kinda common at Lake Tahoe.

Miss 7.. oh she sounds like Itchyboots. We went and asked her and she said to guess. So we said she sounds like Itchyboots from the Netherlands. She was absolutely stunned that a 7yr old had guessed where she came from she said no one ever knows where she is from ... you are educating people in ways you probably never imagined... and then Miss 7 said... 'she is in Mexico at the moment ' oh my heart swelled. She is so excited that she recognised the accent. She also thinks I really love you because I have your hoodie and calender... and socks... 🤷‍♀️. I just rate you very highly... 😁. Thought I'd update you on Miss 7.

      I'm sorry.
If American English is not your first language, its not easy to understand.
In American English, "On the road" can have two meanings:
The first meaning is literal. It means something is on the surface of a paved road. Most often that would probably be a road paved with asphalt.
The second meaning is more of an expression, or a figure of speech. It means a journey or a trip, usually traveling by paved roads. It brings to mind all of the normal experiences and difficulties that are common with being on a trip, away from home.
"Off road" usually is an expression where a vehicle is traveling off of a paved road surface, most likely in dirt, sand, mud, gravel or rocky ground.
So I was playing with the different meanings, which would allow Noraly to be both "on the road" but also "off road" at the same time.
