    If I were you I would go get a colour match , quick rub down of the whole cratch area & paint all of it . Then when Becks is back & sits inside the new cratch it’ll also be nice & freshly painted inside , & you’ll get 100 brownie points 👍

    Tragic accidents happen.
    Heartbreaking for Beck's I know how she is feeling after all her hard work.
    Yes,I agree that the board had a hair line crack in it which was not spotted.
    Yes, you lifted the board up on its weakness point which was not sensible and has cost dearly.
    I once renovated a flat which resembles the inside of your boat the hidden stress caused creeps up on you and you don't know it.
    Beck's was hit with a sledgehammer after the accident.
    I send you both my best wishes for recovery and the strength to finish the project of finishing the boat.
    Take great care both

    Wood glue mixed with sawdust from the boards (if you have any), will help covering the cracks. Woodworkers use that a lot for similar things.

    Glue the break back together with clear epoxy resin, mix in some very fine saw dust so it's the colour of the wood and then sand the repair back and oil. Should hardly be notable after repair.

    Mate, I'm gutted for you both regarding the work top, but honestly, that secondhand board had a massive crack right through it so no one is to blame, it was going to break sooner or later. Keep up the good work guys, you have turned a corner and things will move along much quicker, well done.

    Go to B&Q and buy a pipe sash clamp say 1 mtr long then buy some water proof glue. Wedge the crack open wide enough to force the glue in put plenty on then clamp the wood together with the new sash clamp trying to keep the work top flat. If you have two clamps put one on top and one under neath that will stop it bending up. Cheers Doug from over the water.

    Aged planking can develop grain separation cracks this can be fixed with horizontal pegs and compressed adhesive treatments (glue and clamps) and further cracking can be prevented by screwing in cross bracing at 90 degrees to the grain on the underside to stiffen the boards up and if places atop cut away frame work offer additional load bearing ability

      Thanks Steve, I think also I made the boards quite a few months ago and they have been sat not stored brilliantly owing to lack of space and experiencing an array of narrowboat conditions and temperatures so I'm sure this will have contributed. Great advise thank you!

    1 thing you can try. A little test first. Mix wood glue with the scaffolding boards sawdust. It should match the original wood. Apply on crack and then sand smooth. My opinion. You know what they say about opinions on line😂 just my 2 cents. 😎

    "Super human strength?" Well, of course. Creatures from Planet Crobit have to deal with a different gravity and atmosphere than us earthlings.
    Blue paint? Here's my solution. Look at the smallest entire panel you could paint. Mask it off if you need to, and paint that entire panel. Yes, sand it first, really well, do a couple of coats with a tiny roller, fairing it off with a small brush. Doing an entire panel will look better, more uniform. If necessary, paint adjacent surfaces, but that you can do later.

  • @nickkemp1434
    @nickkemp1434 Год назад

    Personally for a crack like that I'd use epoxy. You would need to tape underneath to stop it running completely through but that's the point. It should run into the crack then set hard both filling the crack and gluing the two boards together. PVA glue is unlikely to run into the crack and doesn't fill gaps well though it would work on the cut out part because you can smear it on and clamp them.

    • @TheNomadicCrobot

    In fairness to Chris, its been shown that there was a hidden fault in the work top and its better to be found NOW rather than when all the kitchen is done up with tiles and stuff, so well done Chris for finding the natural flaw in the wood. The paint probably looks much brighter because the old paint has faded and also been treated with rust converter which stained the paint black. Maybe fade the new paint into the old but regardless, better blue paint than red

    The kitchen bench can successfully be fixed I say Chris, sure you may see the join but you can make it look like part of the timber grain, I was expecting much worse, happy it wasn’t what I was expecting. The paint. Ummmmm. Maybe I should look at a new paint job for the boat with my Lotto winnings. LOL, but I am determined. Sure it’s a different blue, and sure you could have matched the two blues but had you done that it wouldn’t have been so noticeable of all the effort you’ve put in to fix the rust when Beccs gets back, just giving it a brighter spin. Next you do not need to use marine material on repairing your rusted area and spots I would you suggest you use body filler like p38 to infill damaged corroded body work. Might be worth chatting to a car body repair specialist for some good advice on preparation upto final painting. Finally different types of paint do not always go well together. Such as oil based water based and cellulose based paints keep up the good work and remember you are never to old to learn so if in doubt ask most professionals are only to happy to offer advice even over the phone.

    Chris don't beat yourself up about the work top, it was an accident and you didn't do it deliberately. And if it was cracked it would have done that whoever held it. Can you get another tin of paint which is colour matched, and paint a second coat over the blue bits like a top coat and then it would look fine.

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  Год назад

      Yeah I've told him that. Accidents happen. Just take a lesson from it for the future and make sure to hold things by the heaviest part as it also ripped the worktop connectors apart and pulled the two pieces of worktop that I had connected for the 'L' section apart too!!! No harm done just a bit more to do!!

    'The Split!' .... I do feel sorry for you BOTH! .... BUT! .... Looking on the Bright-Side ..... That WAS a Fault in the wood ... You should look on it as a 'Real Stroke Of LUCK' ... Much better to split 'before' you finish - than AFTER! .... (That was always going to split) ..... You'd be doing Becks a favour by Splitting! that last section and Glueing it back together - because that WILL Split once you get water on it 😞 .... Keep on 'Cracking' On ..... 🙂

    Hi Chris , I want to apologize for the rude name I called you. Fact is I had the stomach flu when I wrote that and I think I had potty words on the brain. Honestly it’s better it split before it was screwed down or you were out on the cut. Now the weak spot can be mended. Next time when you glue it mix some sawdust with the glue, then it will match and fill in the crack better. The paint isn’t to bad ,maybe you just need to paint further out to cover the black ring. Unless I’m seeing things.

    Hi Chris, there’s a number of comments saying wood glue, they are right. Buy a decent all weather PVA wood glue (remember the surface will get wet in use) and it will be stronger than the wood. Glue it, clamp it and rub sawdust over the squeezed out glue. I also like the ideas put forward to paint sections of the boat, but not seeing the whole thing it’s hard to say!?? 🍕🍺🍺🍺🧁 for Becks
