    I watched this much earlier but as usual decided to watch this afternoon with a glass of wine.
    Chris, I think your problem is you’re on a river and not a canal. Once y’all finish your boat home and get to a canal, things will be much easier. No fast river flow. Most people are terrified going on rivers. Think of all the experience y’all have!!! Wine makes me think, 🤣😜😂🤞

    To work out your stick, get a full jerry can of diesel, assuming you know the can size (20l maybe?). Then dip the stick, notch it where the level is. Then tip in the full jerry can. Then dip it again. Let's say it goes up by 20mm. Then you know 1mm is 1L or whatever the actual numbers are. Assume you use 1L per hour cruising, though you could measure that over time too. Then you know how many hours you can run the engine for based on how many mm of diesel on the stick 👍

    The procedure I was taught for mooring between other moored boats was to turn in sharply towards the space keeping stern well out in the channel, crew steps off with bowline and ties up then stern can be brought in using engine/rudder or stern line.

    Nary a spider in sight. Yeah, I know, I just had to mention it.
    02:24. "We" seems like a dangerous word. I'm not sure that Bex should let Chris use power tools. With the exception of the Mighty Titan, of course. 02:40. That fetching look while putting on the safety glasses is classic. That could become a great gag.
    I like the sophisticated fuel gauge. That's an important safety measure. You never know--Chris might be sleeping down there in liquid form. Poking him with a stick is just the right thing. 😁

    St Neots....well well well! I went on a boating holiday there with my parents back in the early 80s. We hired a cabin cruiser and went all over the place...Ely, Cambridge etc...lovely. Still looks as nice as it did. As for the control issues on the boat...its a NARROW BOAT! Its the inertia, the mass and the length...any current or movement laterally to the side...and its not going to stop and be very hard to change direction / control / prevent it smacking into things. What you need are a LOT more fenders along the side, front and rear. I would put them every 12 to 18 inches at least...Then you can smack into anything you like and bounce all over the place like a pinball and the boat will not come to harm, and neither will anyone else's......

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  11 месяцев назад

      your not wrong, maybe some larger ones too, its so easy for these things to go out of control...and things get very hairy within seconds, cruising will hopefully get easier with more experience Thanks Simon

    • @Simon-xc5oy
      @Simon-xc5oy 11 месяцев назад

      Hello my dear fellow! Yes you need fenders. They always come in handy. When I saw the boat side on and there was no protection the first thing that came to mind was a quote from Clarkson, Hammond and May -
      "That has not gone well..."
      I shudder to think what the damage would have been if you had gone side on into that boat. For both craft. Are these things insured? Or do you just get stung to death in costs if you gouge the side of someone else's narrow boat or cruiser? You need padding and lots of it, one of those big rope bumper buffers on the front and the same at the back, and many fenders...When I was on that boating holiday I used to get woken up by the swans nibbling and chewing them with those hoover beaks of theirs....I am sure they did it on purpose to get me out of bed to feed them.....

    Along with the engine checks, don’t you have to check the grease pump(🤔) thingy is under pressure? Or is it an occasional job. I’m not a very technical person myself 🤦‍♂️😄. Good to see you getting out and about a little, experience is everything. Take care

    Pushing off from other boats is common, but you are going way too fast. Your approach speed at that point, unless you have to beat current pushing you sideways, should be less than 0.5 mph. It should try your patience.

    I'm sorry but are you serious about refusing to do manual locks ... So you'll never experience staircase locks, the tunnels the elevator lock or the viaduct in Wales? .... Just wait till one of those electric monstrosities breaks down and you have to do that by hand! ... It took 4 strong young men and me taking turns till we were all gasping and exhausted ! Give me a feat of Victorian innovation and a few swing bridges any day, at least they still working there is a power cut ... Okay you are new and you have had a lot to work on, which I greatly respect you for,.. But please don't sit with a thumb on a button and think your doing a lock ... Hey your not christened until you smacked right into an ancient wall trying to get into an awkward lock! Heehee.
    Also avoid the hitting the yogurt pots as much as you can, steel can vs yogurt pot, the expensive yogurt pot will probably be sending you a bill! .... And yes feet and hands are valid tools in an emergency slow mo collision scenario's ... Followed by an apologetic acknowledgement

      @TheNomadicCrobot  Месяц назад

      No it was a joke, sorry.We have actually done other locks too but have the electronic ones up this way, we're both very eager to try all aspects of narrowboating and always try our best to avoid any of the cruisers but sometimes as you probably know the water can get the best of you,fingers cross it doesn't turn into to much of a disaster

    I think the wind pushed you across towards the little boat and that's why your steering wasn't responding. I thought your power bank was an electric oven or a bread maker!
