    Hey, can you guys please tone down then racist remarks ? Yes racism exists in Portland Oregon, along with every other state. It hasn't been a problem with me so far so people should speculate. If you keep making racist comments on here , you are part of the problem.

    • @Jamesagenda101
      @Jamesagenda101  9 лет назад +3

      It wasn't you, it's just the directions that these conversations were going in. It shouldn't be a racial discourse or debate if your thinking of moving to Portland. Just go into it with open-mind.

    Great video from an outside perspective. There's definitely a pride in being different here. Portland grows on you. I never wanna leave. There's a certain culture that I've experienced here that is unmatched. The music, art, sense of community and loyalty is unlike any other city I've visited. It's beautiful, but not for everyone. Portland can be a can accommodate anyone seeking a wild place where you can just be you, with beautiful girls, nightclubs, strip clubs, bars galore in the downtown area. If you're seeking to raise a family, a you can move to SW Portland in a quaint Victorian style home next to quiet parks, if you're into the hipster scene South East is for you. If you're seeking a job there's there's a ton of jobs in the area with a bachelors, from working in the medical field to working in a financial profession.

    Im glad you like, and hope you are continuing to enjoy this great community in Portland. This is a place where anyone with ambition can make it.. with all the diversity in the city its so easy to meet new people and make new friends. As a native Oregonian i just hope the folks moving here will.apreciate what we have here and contribute in their own way to make it a better place... but without changing what it is...

      +Rachel Ayers alot of the suburbs around and outside the metro portland area are very nice. great places to raise a family. those places you listed are in Washington County, a good place. aloha or west linn would also be places you could consider. with that said be prepared to pay top dollar for property or even rent. you'll find real estate market is very hi right now. there's people of all ethnicity all over the nw region of Oregon I think it is a welcoming environment in my opinion. .. a lot of multi racial couples here.. myself included. last thing traffic is an absolute bit@$. good luck

    I won't be popular for saying this, but I lived in southeast Portland for 6 and a half years and I think that city is a dump and a total freakshow. It's definitely one of those "love it or hate it" things. If anyone is interested in living in Portland but hasn't been there, I would definitely recommend visiting first. Much of what this guy loves about living in Portland is what I hate about that place. But I totally respect his POV and don't think he's wrong for liking it.

    I was born and raised in Orange County, then moved up to Sacramento about a year and a half ago. THAT was a culture shock to me. People are hella nicer and more considerate than socal people. I'm thinking about moving to Portland hopefully by the end of the year...being persistent, how long did it take you to find a job and not live off of savings? Did you take the first job you were handed (ie like a gas station, low paying job) or did you actually get a "good" job with a wage you can live off? I have a degree, and it still took me about 6 months to find a job with a livable wage.

    • @Jamesagenda101
      @Jamesagenda101  9 лет назад +1

      I came out here on a whim so I used my savings to make the move. It only took me a month to find a job. The job I found wasn't the best paying job but it got me by. I luckily found something better and it all takes time and becoming familiar with your options and just being persistent.

    • @1Howdy1
      @1Howdy1 9 лет назад +1

      Lived here all my life. You take a job and look for something better. You see very few Help Wanted signs here. That's one thing I notice going to other areas of the country. People there might complain about the job market, yet when I point out all the help signs on businesses it becomes clear the job market they are talking about is good paying jobs. Here, people compete for all jobs. If you have even a two year degree the odds go up. If you have Baresta experience or want Baresta experience you'll find something to get you started. Even servers make minimum wage here, so you don't have to try and live off tips. Portland is a lot nicer than Sac.people wise. Weather? I wouldn't mine moving to Cali just for the sun. 50 degrees and wet can chill you to the bone here. Green and gray most every day.

    Portland is a town built by migrants from other parts of the country much like the US is a country built by immigrants from other parts of the world. There isn't a strong black representation in Portland because Portland is a town built by seculars and progressives not religious and conservatives. It is no coincidence that most black Americans reside in states along the bible belt in the south.
    As for historical racism that's endemic to the nation as a whole and not a reason to keep black migrants away from Portland anymore than anywhere else in the nation. Black people that stay away from Portland do so because they don't like it's progressive, liberal leaning policies and culture. Most black Americans are religious and conservative despite being democrats and this is what keeps them away not the lack of black presence in portland.
    Of course those black people that do move to Portland will find racial problems like everywhere else in the nation but those problems will persist if black people don't speak up, participate in local politics and over all participate in including and integrating themselves into local culture rather than segregate themselves into pockets in the comunity.

    • @AnthonyRizzo2
      @AnthonyRizzo2 9 лет назад +3

      Alexandria Channon I hope you see that you are proving my point. 1920 was 17 president's ago almost 100 years ago! In almost 100 years a lot of history has transpired.
      You can move to Portland. You should move to Portland. You should integrate in Portland. Portland needs your creativity, your intelligence, your humor, your faith, your tenacity and your spirit.
      What it doesn't need is you color. Michael Jackson put it best in his hit song Black or White "I'm not going to spend the rest of my life being a color."
      Don't you get tired of being black of that being the first thing you have to offer, of being a black scientist, a black doctor, a black musician, etc.? Don't you just want to be you? Don't you just want to be a Portlander, an American, a human being?
      It's easy to say that Portland didn't or doesn't want me here but really what part of the world has ever wanted anybody anywhere? If you get dropped off anywhere in the natural world there are thorns and bristles and poisons plants and deadly animals and rocky crevices and Tsunamis and hurricanes all trying to kill us. Should we quit trying to explore and settle the world around us because nature doesn't want us their?
      I get it it's tough but who cares get over it and prove your worthy of Portland by coming here and making something great of yourself. My favorite story is that of Condoleezza Rice practicing her Piano as a little girl while her preacher father stood outside their family home with a loaded shotgun cocked and ready to fire at the KKK that wanted to intimidate and hurt her and her family.
      He told her you have to be better than them so that you can make them respect you. Black culture is the fatback in American cultures collard greens don't let Portland be the exception. You have to bring it because Portland can't come to you.

    I dont think it is emphasized enough how GREY the SKY is in winter and fall. Srsly, It is HARD for even some local people who have been here a long time. Dont visit in Summer. If you want to move to PDX, first you need to travel here a few times in the dead of Winter and understand that there will be 8 months of grey. Rain? Sure. But that is not at ALL the issue. It is the lack of sunshine. If you might suffer SAD, this is NOT your place.

    Has the tremendous bedbug problem been dealt with in Portland? I can see why it would be so bad, with the type of problems the city has. I don't know how Portland supports its self, with such a limited workforce, and economy. The amount of problem type people there seems very alarming.

    • @Jamesagenda101
      @Jamesagenda101  9 лет назад

      I don't think the bikes are a bad think at all. It's a healthy lifestyle and a cheap transportation alternative for this area. I can be a little daunting when you are stuck in traffic and you have bike riders in front of you but it's not a big deal.

  • @spiritually_drunk
    @spiritually_drunk 9 лет назад

    I wanna go :O Glad to know about the public transportation. I don't drive but I don't want to deal with the congestion of Chicago (I live in Illinois) in order to get around, and I don't yet have a high-quality bike, so that wouldn't work. I'm very happy to know there's a lot of greenery, but also very progressive people (not like the deep south.) This has really made me want to make the move.
    A question, though -- how is the job market? I'm not someone who really wants much space as I'm not looking to start a family of my own or anything, so honestly a cheap studio or something of that nature would probably suit me. But in your opinion, if you don't mind sharing -- how hard do you think it might be for one to make a proper living out there?
    Regardless, again, thank you for the seemingly informative and thorough video! :)

    Lived in Portland, OR 3 years and couldn't take it anymore. Mostly because my already insufferably smug husband turned into the ultimate smug ahole after moving there. We divorced and I moved to the other coast, while he still sits on social media and brags to his friends back in TX how superior he is for moving to Oregon, taking boring photos of the gray sky and his beers, and somehow never making friends. I feel like he kind of sums up the worst element of hipster towns.

      Jobs are fairly easy to come by if you are agressive, but I think that is anywhere you go. It also depends on what kind of work you are looking for. I was supposed to transfer when I moved, that didn't end up happening so I looked for a job to pay the rent. I found a job the first month I was here. I hope that helps.

    I just checked out a few more videos and read some more comments, replies, and now the idea of moving to Portland scares me. Not even sure if I'd like Seattle.
    First of all I don't care much for alcohol although I do live in a much smaller city that is BIG on drinking.
    I am very sick of sports--I find sports and competition to be evil! It doesn't even matter to me if people are slowly becoming more empathic and hopefully more respectful!
    It doesn't even matter if even more profession athletes are speaking out against bullying and demosric violence, etc. and especially because athletes still get all this disturbing amount of support!
    In other words I am not sure if I would be accepted by enough people out there -- I'm certainly not one of those people who gives a fuck about those who don't care because some do and those who don't aren't worth my time!
    I don't like the idea of seeing naked people in public! I'm not very conservative nor am I very liberal! I tend to be more of a moderate democrat -- Possibly leaning a little more towards the left, or maybe the right.
    Unless I misunderstood this other RUclipsr I think he said the environment is not as good as it used to be -- I'm sorry if I offended anyone but I am trying to get a better idea on whether or not to move to the Portland Area, or a different part of OR or maybe WA State for example.
    And yes, the population growth does scare me so I can kind of understand IF most of the natives are not very welcoming.
    This is a very good example on why everyone in every municipality and neighborhood really needs to do whatever they can to improve their quality of life! We need less births!
    We also need more and more people to become better human beings -- I believe that more schools are teaching kids about that which is not good enough alone!
    We need to help more of the homeless, outcast, mentally ill, the disabled, and yes, we also need to be more like Denmark! I believe it's now the happiest country in the world!
    Socialism is not all bad, there are different variations! Those who are ignorant about the facts need to do enough of their homework!
    There is so much that we need to do!

    Portland is a very small-town (in the worst way) kind of city.Though the city has 600 K people in it, there are still unpaved streets. Oh and, minor point: there is no representative government in this city, meaning you are not represented by a city councilperson, or an alderman for your "district." There are no districts, just a bunch of City Commissioners who are in charge of various "bureaus". They pretty much decide what they want to do, and then they do it. The only time they have to be face to face with the populace is when they hold a public hearing. So, if you are moving here form a real city, be prepared to be governed by a bunch of (mainly white) bureaucrats who know what's best for you and rarely ask what you think about it. www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2014/07/limited_voting_rights_portland.html#incart_river

      - Well, thats progressivism for you. People who steal the fruits of your labor, shovels extreme social engineering down your throat, micromanage both the economy and society, and then expect a "thank you" in return. Portlanders in overwhelming numbers like it that way, so everybody has to deal with it. Like most people they also confuse democracy with "rights", while its really the dictatorship of whoever has a majority in the precent....
