all these comments arguing about Portland. "Portland's sucks!", "Portland's awesome!" please stop. It's just a city. Some people love it there, others don't. there's no reason to be disrespectful. We are all different and have other opinions based on our own upbringing and general personality. If you have something to criticize make it constructive and have respect :)

I love portland. I fell in love with the city when i first drove past it on a road trip. I lived in the pacific north west for about two years. I love it, just dont let the people scared you from moving to one of the nicest city in the north west. People may be weird in portland at least they are free to express whatever. "Each of its own"...im looking forward to moving back soon...i miss portland, there is so much to do if you are into out door stuff.

Well I have lived in the NW for 32 years. Portland used to be more friendly and laid back. But as more California residents moved in and the over generations grow up. It has became more conservative and not as friendly.
Don't let the clerks in stores and Coffee shops think it's a friendly city. That's a standard meet and greet in all businesses Nationwide.
If want odd or weird go visit San Francisco. It's very liberal and open to many unusual events. Portland is still not as open as it could be.

Portland seems like such a friendly and cool place-especially to me, being a Utah resident. Such a suppressed and ignorant state this is. I can't wait until the day I make it to Portland.

@Cucktown Population: Me im not even in the far right camp .. I used to be but I can say this.. It matters none what side I'm on.. This is an intolerant place with intolerant folks. Be a bit off white, have an accent.. Even if youre liberal or on the trans spectrum like I am. I still dont get to see the show. I still have issue with those who should be believing in solidarity.. Isnt that their message? I say that as someone whos moved on from right wing extremism.
Even if I wanted to find Antifa even without going to a protest to even make friends with, I cant. Theyre even in the minority. When I was on the far right, it was awfully hard too..
Fact is that Portland is like if u took Omaha or Des Moines, put more unfriendly people and more trees.. It would just be boringness with more of a view and extra crowds.. For what??? I fell for the Portland hype before.. Now its time to move on for good.

I mean maybe, but what if I'm just not outwardly flamboyant and don't care AT ALL about what I wear besides being comfortable. I'm from Oregon and occasionally will talk with random dudes like this on the street. I can explain to them until I'm blue in the face that I am being who I am and they will always insist I'm hiding it. They usually have A LOT to say and I just let them throw it out there.

    • @salasvalor01
      @salasvalor01 9 лет назад +1

+lion575 That's right. I sensed hypocrisy here. I feel like Seattle is like Portland without that negative, a true emerald city. That's my definition of normal: being beautiful without being a contradiction. Something like that.

+samsquanch1996 Maybe... but being born and raised here there are a lot of fake people here... Oh they're nice, but past that there isn't much deeper... To be honest I sometimes feel the weirdness is like a big wall to distract from some of the real issues. Don't get me wrong, I love it.. However, I know a lot of weird people that are hiding behind the strangeness. I know a lot of genuine normal people too.

I have owned a body piercing and tattoo shop for the last 40 years and what makes me weird is that i have no piercings or tattoos. I love what i do. I am also a jeweler and i have no jewelry except some rocks and sticks. I have a little house in the burbs and i grow most of my own food and build solar panels. Seems to be that Portland is not weird, it's just more accepting of its people. You can be homeless, homosexual, be awkward or unfitting and not be awkward in Portland. You're welcome no matter who you are, and that's something that you don't find in other cities in the US. This is why Portland is considered a Liberal city, most hated by the Right-Wing men.

    • @jordanmoch2529

Actually, homosexuality is currently legal at west and eastern states and some states around the great lakes. Also there's homeless people everywhere, especially NYC. I just don't get for the life of me why you people think Portland is different lol.

i come from the east coast. came here to go where i knew no one. what i learned about portland is, it is no different then any other city in this country. the one thing that set this place apart to me, was that the max was free in the city. then they took that away, as if they didnt have a extremely bad traffic problem in the city. people in portland will purposely block traffic just so they dont have to be behind a red light. yeah theres bike lanes, but i watched bikers straight up turn in front of the car and then give the signal. which explains the high amount biker deaths. i love the fact that it embraces the art community, but it also try to control it by deciding what is art and what goes on the walls. im a artist, self taught, and i find that offensive. but like i said, its the same as any other city. theres homeless, people with children think i want to kidnap them in broad daylight, grannies still lock the doors of their car if i walk by while they are sitting in it, my point is people here judge just as much as any other place, the difference is they will smile at you, while eastcoast would just say it. but if i had to choose anywhere to be at the moment it would be here, ill take the smile, and most people wouldnt talk to me anyway, so i have peace. im a vet so i tend to avoid crowds.

I live in Portland and I love it because of the scenic beauty, it is really nice if you like the mountains and nature etc, but the people are not friendly. Portland is full of annoying pretentious hipsters that shun you if you are not the same. I feel like a complete outcast because I am not a foodie hipster bike riding beer snob. I am not saying that you should not move here because it is beautiful and I actually love the weather, but be prepared to deal with thousands of hipsters who hate anyone who is not as "cool" as they are.

Just get philosophical about it - if the people you are encountering are from portland, how hip could they possibly be? Just as hip as people in spokane or des moines? or maybe as hip as people in missoula, or cheyenne?
Understand? It is not as if you are talking about a big city bustling with culture and different ethnic groups (LA, SF, NY, Bos etc.). Don't sweat back-water hipsters from any small town, and life will improve - good luck!

To all the people arguing over why this city sucks or why that city is better than this other city, just stop. Every city has it's own unique energy and that's not going to appeal to everyone. Fact of life. Just because it isn't your cup of tea doesn't make it objectively horrible.
For example, I can't stand Montreal. Bad experiences there and such. Do I think it's just a really horrible place in general? No, because that's just dumb. It's energy just didn't mesh with me and that's fine. Mad respect to people who love it there. Same goes for any other place.

If you would like to do another documentary, I respectfully suggest the saga of Dutchess, the dog who has been missing for 14 weeks. See the Sellwood Moreland Nextdoor group. Here is the most recent post, and this lady has been posting several times a week and people have been responding to try and help her:
Dutchess Missing 14 weeks....REWARD of House cleaning once a month for a year!
Dutchess has been missing now for 14 weeks. Though I have met some of the most amazing people along the way, this has been an emotional road to walk. The up's and down's are very hard. However, I an not giving up and am very hopeful she will return! Please keep looking for her. I an offering a house cleaning gift for whoever finds her or leads us to her. 1 year once a month free cleaning. I have cleaned professionally on the side for over 15 years.

Ok, it was really WEIRD that the homeless guy had to explain that the cover song was by a "guy" named Willie Nelson. Like is he serious? The kids dont know that he is an ICON in American music?? sad

Q: so whats the chronology of Weird Portland? A: it starts with THE WIPERS and all the scene descended from them from 1975 on. Ice 9, Systematic, Trap, Tombstone, Theater of Sheep, Babes In Toyland, Hole, Nirvana, Heatmiser, Quasi, Spin Age Blasters, Glass Candy and the Shattered Theater, the Clorox Girls - the X-Ray Cafe - Aural Fixation - the Meow Meow - The Mercury and AB SAB the Student Activities department of PSU - KBOO - Powells - Voodoo Donuts (where the Bacon and Maple Barr is named for me and Maple and our obsession with "Roseanne"), our Girl/Boy Interrupted 2000 Riot Girl campaign also known as LISA ROWE ROWE ROWE YR BOAT TO SAVE DAISY in which I was LISA'S ROWE'S BOYFRIEND - our never-ended DALLAS scene drama - DIAMOND TUCK, SILVERKINGS, DISCOURAGE ROCK N ROLL and the bands who continued the EXPLODING HEARTS - The Nice Boys, Slan, and The Neat - then SEWERS OF PARIS and ITALIANS DO IT BETTER. KEEP PORTLAND WEIRD commemorates the same thing AN INSTANT ATTRACTION does - Johnny Jewel coming up from Texas after the Geto Boys blew up to meet Ida at Fred Meyers in 1996 where I was his Courtesy Clerk, yr Boy Courtney of FRINGE WEIRD - PAGAN MAGIC PROJECT MAYHEM and the ALIEN BOYS. Here's to 2021 that we KEEP PORTLAND WEIRD and working.

Here in Washington State Port means something else, I thought this was going to be a documentary about Port as in Pot, Right then that should tell you how weird I are because of the first thing I thought of when I read port was an illegal substance which I have never smoked by the way
