The earliest part of Portland's downtown park blocks date back to the early 1850s, more than 170 years ago. This is when the land was set aside for what would become the South Park Blocks. Years later, in 1869, several blocks on the north end of town were donated to the city and became the North Park Blocks. These two stretches of green space run right through the middle of downtown but are separated by several blocks between them. Way back when these blocks were new the objective was always to connect them, creating an unending park that ran some 25 continuous blocks, but more than a century and a half later this has still not happened.
In this video I do what I do in paying a visit to the park blocks and showing how they look today. Beyond that I dive into the old history of what happened and why in terms of addressing the question of why this park has never been completed.

Incredible vide. I've watched your Chennai on and off since the start of pandemic. I am from south west Portland near johns landing; it's been great to watch your videos to learn more about the history of where I grew up. Used to play basketball with my coworkers after work at the north park. Good times

Sadly now, those courts are pretty much taken over by people dealing and smoking fentanyl. No one ever plays there anymore.

I like your idea. Convert the (eastern) Park Ave between Salmon and Washington to a pedestrian street, and install a few trees and benches perhaps.
When I was a student at PSU, one of my professors mentioned the idea of making all of the park blocks to pedestrians only, like removing vehicular traffic on each of the Park Avenues.
Frankly while on this topic, I encourage you to ponder NW 13th Ave generally between Davis and Hoyt give or take. Converting that to a pedestrian only (car-less) would be very logical. The trees in those large pots have been there for many years now and continue to just grow in pits with the street blocked off. Imagine a center bioswale with trees in the middle.
Increasing Portland's Green Urbanism is something Portland should be focusing on these days.
Cheers thanks for the great video, I appreciate your work!

This vid is exceptionally well done. It's so fun and interesting to walk around with you on these informative romps. (And many an amazing time at my friend Debbi's apartment in the Eaton in the 90s. Fortunately, nothing required bail money. ;) )

Great job Steve. Consider doing a video on the downtown branch of the Portland Library at 10th and Taylor. Thanks

I’d probably consider it, I walked by it while I was out getting video for this one and the wheels in my head spun a little.

A more complete history would include the removal of the native peoples who were inhabitants and traders.
