      I was supossed to go to Cali this past weekend, I changed my mind. I recently got in contact with my old neighbours after 20 years and they were a lovely family. I told them I was visiting Cali and they were willing to travel two hours to drive me around but I didn’t trust it. I thought they might try to get me robbed. Just never know.

That is some next-level paranoia. It sounds like you need some serious help, possibly medication too. Thinking like that isn't normal. And this was CALIFORNIA. The wisest move was calling and listening to your gf. If something gets stolen there, its gone. Let it go. Getting into the police car would've made your day exponentially more complicated. I'm glad you're alright and made this video. Many Colombians will claim you "gave papaya", I guess by walking around and existing. The more different you look, the more you stand out, the more you are an obvious target. Crime rates are up in Medellin and Colombians and foreigners alike are getting robbed or poisoned weekly. The police in Medellin do not even keep track of scopolamine poisonings unless they have to send a body back to North America or Europe. I'm just waiting for one of those paid, blonde, foreigner Vloggers to pop up with " COLOMBIA ES UNA CHIMBA!!" and pretend everything is normalizing. As someone who has been back and forth for over a decade I can say there is more tension now. Medellin has always been a crime-ridden, violent place. But cost of living, inflation, and a huge influx of foreigners (who are seen as the cause of all of the inflation by many locals) doesn't make a calming mix.

      @2987fjhkiq I don't think so, Colombia is well known for being dangerous, and famous for being the place where woman use scopolamine to assist robberies. I also lived there for a year, and fortunately had a very good experience. Everywhere I went, locals would be very friendly and also very concerned, warning me of bandits. Seems like there's plenty of warning, people still go rocking the most expensive katmandu gear, go-pro's in hand, flashy jewellery, and sadly many arrogant people who behave badly, drinking heavily and getting out of control in tourist trap areas, disrespectful toward locals, treating woman poorly. Many tourists ignore all the warnings.

    • @Jimsimi
      @Jimsimi 5 месяцев назад +3

      @Chainbreak2023 Travelling and vacation are not the same thing. If you want to relax and destress, go to a resort, or a spa, most people don't even need to leave their country for that. Most people who would go to Colombia are looking to experience a new culture and have an adventure. Which can also be relaxing at times, but that's not the point of the trip. Even in Colombia if you stay in a resort and only travel with a tour group, then it's extremely safe. These issues are for people exploring outside of those safe systems.

I was robbed there, and nobody gave a shit. They just told me how much "worse" the US is with mass shootings, and found ways to whataboutism their way out of acknowledging how much prevalent crime is there. Bro awesome channel. But i think you hit it spot on. Many "naive" people come and visit. Understanding the culture and how to move around here like you said, is key. Personally, my family or i have never gotten robbed or anything but we also take our precautions. Unfortunately, some people look like easier or better targets than others. For example, older people, women, younger girls and boys, and some foreigners. This is why my parents wouldn't be able to walk certain streets at night in the center of any city like i would, they would be more at danger than someone like me or my age. I do hope these cases dont increase tho.
      Either way, i hope no one gets scared from coming down here. At the end of the day I think there are a lot of people that are able to live a calm life without getting bothered or bothering anyone else down here. Colombia is a pretty amazing country! 🇨🇴

    As a southamerican (from Venezuela) I don't even feel safe in my home country. I walked at night until I was probably 25 y/o and never did it alone, and now I know I was taking a huge risk. Walking at night is not advisable at all in South America, even if you are in a small or large group, senior or young. The only place in this part of the world I've felt safe-ish is Buenos Aires, although I haven't travelled much either. I only know some parts of Colombia and Quito, Ecuador. Uber and taxis are safe to use only in Buenos Aires. And they are affordable. This is also something you shouldn't do in Venezuela nor in Colombia, best to have a local recommend a trusty taxi driver by full name and with a straight record. Dude, as a Colombian-American, I don’t even go to that sh*thole. I use to go when I was younger because we would go on family trips and the amount of times shady shit would happen was limitless. My father who’s from Cali, was robbed at gunpoint by not ONE, but THREE-FOUR people on motorcycles. Forked up some, if not all the money he had brought on the trip. As you could imagine, it ruined everything. And that wasn’t the last time. It’s just an all around terrible place. I still have vivid memories of the violence after everything happened with Pablo Escobar (as an American kid, traveling to Colombia) it was shocking to say the least. It was all in the air. I have a friend that lived here in the states and moved back to Colombia and we were actually having this discussion about how dangerous it is. Particularly where my mom and dad are from (Medellin, Cali, respectively) and she scoffed at what I said which threw me for a loop because I was like, didn’t they literally just kidnap a professional soccer players father and demand a ransom…? But much like what you’re saying, the lame RUclipsrs and people that so staunchly defend it like it’s not the actual sh*thole it is, is appalling. I could tell you countless stories about similar experiences that have happened to acquaintances and relatives. I look super gringo too, and I have another buddy that’s half Colombian half white, I can assure you that if both of us were walking around Colombia minding our business, somebody was watching us. You and your friend reminded me of what me and my buddy would have happened to us. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful country, but the bad far outweighs the good. I haven’t been in years and probably not going anytime soon. It’s getting too hot around the world and people are desperate. Glad you’re safe though fam. Life is cheap in Colombia. They wouldn’t hesitate to put one in you if it really came down to it.

    Sorry about your experience. Colombia is my adopted country. I’ve been married to a wonderful Colombian woman for 22 years. The people of Colombia are amazing. And everything you said is true. Americans should absolutely not go to Colombia “loose” as I heard one ex-pat living there put it. IF you go, you need to learn and follow safety protocols exactly. You should be able to speak Spanish and you should have local Colombians that you can trust with your life and you need to listen to them carefully. If you’re just looking for a fun and easy time in South America, try Uruguay or Chile or Argentina, not Colombia. If you go to Colombia, you need to follow the advice of my high school football coach: keep your knees bent, keep your head on a swivel, and protect yourself at all times! And I say this as someone who loves Colombia. 🤷‍♂️

    you hit the right formula - "cool shit that i would like." We have a very similar mentality on a lot of things, from what I've seen, so it's been a real joy to watch your adventures. Somehow your storytelling makes it easy to imagine myself having these same adventures, even the trafficking because that's the kind of shit that would happen to me at the end of the day.... lol

    You have an authenticity to your channel and that is much appreciated these days. Too many videos are just feel-good generic nonsense (e.g. the idea that every country is great and full of noble people) or too sensationalistic (think of channels that focus on Colombia - either how dangerous and scary it is or how COL is a sex free-for-all). You have a good mix of sentiments and stories, because that's how the real world is. Some things are better, some are worse. Some are scary.
    With regard to COL, I've been there twice and I don't think I want to come back. I had a LOT of fun, but I didn't feel comfortable at all, knowing the crime rate. It's not worth going to a place where you have to watch your back all the time.

You have inspired me to start traveling (I quit my job and will begin solo traveling in April). Nonetheless, this story has been very insightful. I have been 50/50 on whether I start my travels in Lima or Medellín. This video has made that decision very easy. When I visited Medellín back in October, I did feel safe, but then again, I was only there for a week and traveled with a group of friends the whole time.

    Ive spent time in Colombia, but typically less touristy places like Ibague or smaller towns and love the country, its people and amazing Colombian women. But since my last visit there in 2020, things seem to be getting quite a bit worse with crime and general attitude toward foreigners. TOday I would also not advise a frst time or not a seasoned traveller to go to vacation in Colombia. Its simply too risky, especially in touristy places like Medellin or Cartagena. THere are so many other amazing places around the globe, that are much safer for you. Hope Colombian authorities decide to take action and straighten things out, although i wouldnt count on it

Don't get involved with bad crowd and meet up with working girls and you good Capache. Cos, there's a load of good things as well as the cons which is Safety.

    In Colombia, use a cheap, throwaway burner phone when out on the street. Leave your $1400 iPhone 14 in your rental in a secure place. Leave your passport and your wallet in your rental and carry a copy of your ID and just enough cash for the day. This guy is lucky he didn't get his motorcycle stolen.

    Your intuition led you to the right place. All those marketing "gurus" forgot the most important aspect of marketing and that is that there are many ways to build an audience but only ONE way to ensure you keep making content LONG ENOUGH to get that audience. The only way to be consistent and do something long enough is if the marketing is in line with your personality/morals/what you enjoy. 99% of people start a business only to stop doing it before they get big because they bought into some marketer's view about how things must be done.

    I'm planning on going to Colombia in February for three weeks. I found a really cheap air fare and thought I'd take advantage of it. I'm an independent traveler and pretty intrepid, but I'm also older now and not into taking unnecessary risks. As it happens I'm flying into Medellin. I was reading my Lonely Planet Colombia guidebook and considering staying in the Laureles neighborhood you mentioned since it's quiet and not as touristy as Poblados, but after listening to this maybe not?!! I thought Colombia was safer now, but in the last couple of weeks I've been reading and watching reports that perhaps it's not as safe as I thought. Just a couple of days ago I read about an American Hmong citizen who was kidnapped in Medellin and later killed, even though his family payed $2000 ransom. My plan wasn't to stay in Medellin longer than a couple of days, and to head over to the zona cafetera and Los Nevados National Park to check out the mountains as you mentioned. I'm also wanting to head south to see the arqueological digs at San Augustin. I'm wondering if there are any towns/ cities/ areas that are considered safer to travel in Colombia, and in the same way dangerous and not advisable, or if it's the entire country. I'm originally from Venezuela so I speak Spanish, but I know that doesn't make any difference. I'm blonde and look like a gringo, which I am. At this point I'm not ready to cancel the trip, but if I keep getting negative reports perhaps I should truly consider it.

      Correct. Like I said in another comment - Don’t go “loose”. I love Colombia, but it is still a corrupt narco-state. If you’re not trying to hook up with a girl covered in tattoos and young enough to be your daughter who you met on a “dating” app, or if you’re not going to bars or discos, or walking through neighborhoods (even nice ones) or hiking through mountains, you should be fine. Take an Uber after dark - even if it’s only two blocks. Carry a burner phone and $50 in cash. No credit cards. The problem is that most Americans don’t want to follow these types of rules. They want to go and party and relax. Colombia is not the 51st state. It’s not America. As long as you go in with this understanding, you should be fine. If you’re Venezuelan, you should already know all of these things. Venezuela is Colombia on steroids.

      @calamaridog 9 месяцев назад +5

      I recently stayed in Laureles for 6 weeks. I like it more than Poblado, which is more touristy, but either one is fine. You should budget at least 5 days in Medellin if you really want to see some sites and get a feel for the city. I have friends there, and I plan most of my "trips" around the city by taking someone with me who is a local and has Colombian street smarts. If you end up somewhere a bit questionable, hop into a busy business and order yourself an Uber. You can get an Uber in 5 minutes unless it's very late.
      Don't go to stupid places, at stupid times of the day, with stupid people. Same rule in the United States lol. If you want, I can get you in touch with a very reliable and affordable city guide. He can meet you during the day and take you to some great places. I feel much more relaxed when one or more people are watching my back in a new place.
