The Dallas Mavericks have been around since 1980, but most people have no idea of their history before Dirk Nowitzki got there. In this video, I talk about the Mavs during the '80s and '90s and how good they actually were. Hope you enjoy!

#nba #mavs #dirk Спорт
I'm born, raised, and still live in Dallas so I know all about the franchise pre-Dirk. Drafting spares like Randy White and Doug Smith set them back a few years. The 3 Js were great, but couldn't get along so that set them back even further. I remember when they drafted Dirk and people were calling him a bust his first year. Oops.
And this is why Dirk's getting a statue outside aac
As a Mavs fan I'm going to be sad when Dirk is gone but the sad part is we didn't deserve him but yet he wanted to stay he even took pay cuts 😭😭😭
We honestly didn't deserve dirk. The Mavs were horrible at getting free agents that would help him win and would settle for players that are past their prime.
When Dirk leaves there will be no loyalty in the NBA.
@@josephmarkesjoseph1357 that will happen next season sadly
At least ya’ll got Porzingis and Doncic...
I’m a depressed Knicks fan
@@Odysseus1999 lol. I'm a wizard fan. I feel you. We can't trade anyone though
Niiceee Andy, I really appreciate these non-mainstream topic videos. All we are hearing about right now is Lakers, Celtics, Davis and Porzingis. And then the regular mix of stories within there but I was getting a little worn out with all the speculation
nicee.
Cuban buying the team was also a major factor
I think you should do a video about jahlil okafor reviving his career.
Yes!
mikica stanic +
Ye he’s been doing his thing
Dilly dilly
@Best sg in the league ma man, in last 8 games he is averging 22 ppg 11 rpg and 3bpg i would say thats a revival, and especially when u look that AD is leaving and jahlil will be they're New franchise player and he Can only get better from now on coz he is 21 yrs old
Dallas was nothing before he got there .......Mark Cuban deserves some credit as well....he is by most standards a good owner who has at least tried to win
That is... until the scandal hit.
@@TheManny717 Yes, true....
😂 I was finna say... didn’t he say they were tanking
That’s what you get when you are on Shark Tank
Me n my dad went through hell before Dirk came 😂
Dick Motta's my great uncle! I still remember when i was young he would tell me how much he enjoyed coahing the game, especially his days in Dallas :')
I think he was unfairly criticized at times. He was a very good coach for a long time and was mostly successful until the ‘90s. Some say that if he had still been the coach in 1987-88, the team would’ve played even better in the playoffs that year snd gone past the Lakers. We’ll never know, but perhaps it’s true.
Kidd was awesome as a rookie in Dallas! Kidd had a Luka-like 38 point triple-double in a clutch win over a good Rockets team in route to being the first Mavericks player to win Rookie of the Year.
It was heartbreaking 💔 when they broke that team up and traded Kidd who was so obviously destined for for the Hall of Fame. Thank God he made it back to Dallas in time to help Dirk get them both rings.
I loved Dallas in the 90s. From Jason Kidd to Michael Irvin. Thank you Dirk for that ring
Before Dirk Nowitzki, the Dallas Mavericks had excellent players in Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman,Brad Davis,Jay Vincent, Derek Harper
and Sam Perkins.
Davis came from the CBA, and played in the team's maiden season in 1980-81. Aguirre was an excellent scorer, but was also known for being a bad
seed off the court. Regardless, the Mavs had some good teams, but they could not escape the specter of the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs.
Andy Can You Do?
How Good Was The Miami Heat Before Dwayne Wade Arrived?
How Good Was The Cleveland Cavaliers Before Lebron James Arrived?
The heat were ok before wade
They had glen rice,Tim Hardaway,Alonzo mourning,Rony seikley
The Cavs were also decent in the late 80's and early 90's with Mark Price, Brad Daugherty, and Larry Nance Sr.
The Heat were terrible for their first few seasons (an expansion team), but became a very good team during the mid-late '90s.
The heat and cavs were actually good and consistent playoff contenders before wade and lebron. They didnt win any championship because.... Welll... Jordan happened.
The mid 90's Mavs team with Jason Kidd,Jamal Mashburn and Jim Jackson could've been the Mavs long term future but their off-court issues got them all traded out of Dallas.
In the late 1980's as a lifelong Pistons fan during the Bad Boys era,the trade Mark Agguire for Adrian Dantley was a gift for the Pistons, from that point onwards like they always say the rest is history.
Jim and Jason clash over Toni Braxton and Mark Aguirre had problems with MAVS and Darnley upset cause rodman take his minutes so pistons trade dantley for Mark Aguirre from the MAVS
*Forgot to mention the beef between Jim and Jamal over scoring responsibilities
Andy always putting out great videos!
Great video Andy!
LOVE this type of video
Do a video like this with Cleveland before Lebron arrived. I think you should go in depth about the Cavaliers of the 90’s with Mark Price.
the 92 cavs went to round 3
dope video my guy
Dude, Dale Ellis is hella underrated. Imagine him in the league today.
Honestly If he was in the league today he would be like Bradley beal
Dale Ellis in today’s league would just be a step below Klay. Only reason he dominated was because he was one of the only players that purely relies on the 3. In today’s game each team has got one.
Didnt know he was that nice...i think he was 3rd best player by the time Kemp and Payton blew up
good topic,cheers
They have 3 Dirks now.
lol who’s the 3rd one
Dear Andy, please make a video on how good were the Golden State Warriors before the Splash Brothers arrived & that will be a surprising one especially that team was born way back in 1946 & one of the few remaining NBA teams who'd survived for more than 70 years since NBA was once called BAA.
wow people are talking about mavs now.. great!
Yes As a Mavs fan no one talks about us but now :)
yeah bruh miss being relevant.. but the trade is going crazy now.. cuban must have been cooking something big next season
You know how great a player is when he turned the team around bigtime after 2 years of drafting him. Massive respect to this man named Dirk Nowitzki
7:04 bruh
Tarpley talented dude, but drugs messed him up.
Jason look like lonzo in the thumbnail
Tj Goodwin. Yep noticed it too
Haha that was the first thing I saw without reading the title and I thought this was going to be some type of trade scenario video
with 40 inch vertical
Light skin, pass lovers, crappy shooters (at least for Jason Kidd, initially he was bad. But improving over time). Yup I agree.
Lonzo is Kidd lol
Dirk is so underrated...
Dirk is widely regarded as a legend , HOFer, and an all around amazing dude
no hes not
-_- dont say everyone is "underrated"
He is seeing as the 2nd best pf and hof so what?
@@pepeefirat Ahhhh... He carried the mavs all the time
@@pepeefirat and still doesn't get noticed for how he plays, slow but still fast... Its hard to explain
Unbreak my heart by toni Braxton is a nice song BTW
whatever man facts
Love triangle between Jason and Jim back in Atlanta
@@Clutchcmac19yeah I've heard. was Jamal involved in too?
No but but Jim and Jamal had beef over scoring or what else
@@Clutchcmac19 It’s probably not true.
It’s just a bunch of unrelated facts fused together to created a Falsehood. The Mavs did go up to New York to see Braxton, but it was a team field trip, and neither Kidd nor Jackson went.
There’s no evidence that Kidd and Jackson met Braxton in Atlanta. And the Triple J’s denied this.
I generally don’t think why people think this is true, and it’s not the main factor of the drama between the triple-J’s. The main factor is that they all wanted to be the main guy
Very interesting topic
Andy!!! How could u not mention Michael finley
Also wondering why he did not mention Finley.
What an ommision...it was like watching a movie where u read the book 1st...and the movie fucks up the story...smh
the 03 mavs went to round 3 not facing legends like oscar robertson kareem abdul-jabbar wilt chamberlain + bill russell
I enjoyed the video
YEESH THEY DRAFT GOOD
OMG! You’re so right about CUBAN! The dude is really passionate about winning and truly loves the game of basketball. Rather have a owner that cares about his team than one who only cares about revenue
Roy Tarpley was a very good player he couldn't stay of cocaine it just messed his career up! R.I.P to him! This video took me back though I loved watching the 80's Mavs when I was a kid! I hate I never saw them play at Reunion Arena that place was rowdy! I would see the circus at Reunion Arena though lol
All I remember is Balkman but only because of cards. And Kidd was in NBA Jam TE
How about a video on Tarp? He had HOF talent all the way but snorted his way out of the league. I remember a lot of great talent wasted during the "cocaine era" Tarp, Orlando Woolridge ( who did the between the legs dunk way back in the '84 dunk contest) Michael Ray Richardson, John Lucas, although much latter you could throw Richard Dumas in there too, how the Lakers were even able too play much less win championships is a small miracle... Anyway great vid keep it up.
You should do one of these history videos for all the nba teams!
I agree!
You definitely need to do a video about the streetball legend Rafer Alston aka Skip to My Lou!! =)
This video should be edited, you have to include MICHAEL FINLEY!!!!
For me you are the best
andy u should do this for the rockets before hakeem and for the spurs before david robinson
Some of the 80s players are still around the area and the team. Brad Davis and Derek Harper have both done Radio/TV commentary for their games for years. Rolando Blackman was an assistant coach for them and in Europe and still runs a charity organization in Dallas. Those are the only 3 guys to have their numbers retired by the team so far.
Smooth transition from Valentine’s Day to sponsor. 😂
How can you dislike a Video over the German Jesus smh
The German Assassin *
They were beast in 87-88. I really thought they would be amazing in the 90s after 1995. They had the 3 J's and were the most improved team in 1995. then boom.
Speaking of Triple Js, they broke up over love triangle with Toni Braxton especially Jim and Jamal beef over scoring responsibility
@@Clutchcmac19 that toni braxton thing was never proven. Just a rumor.
Been rocking with Dallas since I was born! #96
Jay Vincent went to the high school I go to now!!!
Video of me going ham these last couple of games
Whatever u hitting don't stop bro
Can you do a video about the bestplayer of each year from 80s
Can you post videos similar to this for all of the other nba teams
My Favorite Team right here been rocking with them since 97
Since triple j kidd monster mash Jimmy Jackson 😭
@@antoniolord2987 big facts!!!
Mark Aguirre era, then years of losing, then Nash and Nowitzki.
Ayy The Mavs Get Some Love 🙏👌
You should do a video on the Seattle supersonics
Dirk nowitzki was the man
Jason Kidd looks like lonzo ball in the thumbnail...wow eerie!!!!
Another interesting video you could do is the Miami Heat before Dwyane Wade.
now every team that isn't a super team is tanking so hard and I feel bad for the players playing there
Can u do a video on the Suns team that went to the finals and the Sonics team that won the finals
Can you do an episode like this for the warriors and spurs
That pass Johnson did 👀7:29-7:37
The Mavs of the late 80's thru mid 90's, were a trainwreck of a team. They always had potential, especially when they had a team made up of Kidd, Jackson, and Mash'!
Before that trio arrived, the Mavs had players like Rolando Blackman, Derek Harper, Brad Davis, Fat Lever, Herb Williams, and Sam Perkins...
It just never really happened to come together for the Mavs... not until Coach Nelson arrived.
Do a video about the tough MVP race this season
Andy Hoops please do one on Penny Hardaway, and most importantly reveal the truth on his injuries.
good video even though it just came out
You should do the cavs before Lebron
How old are you? 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
You know Cavs were deep playoffs regular during the 80s-mid90s, right? Brad Daugherty, Mark Price, Craig Ehlo, Larry Nance. Those were the guys, and the legendary Lenny Wilkens is their coach. If not because that damn pesky Bulls standing on their way.
Lukas Bauman oh we all know they suck bad
The Mavs were a really good team before Dirk arrived tho , I mean Derek Harper and Ronaldo Blackman in the 80s , early 90s yeah that’s when they really fell flat tho and went through rebuilding and Dirk really helped them big time
U should do a video about jermain o Neal
You do one with the Miami Heat with Dwyane wade
The only pre Dirk Mavericks that I recall we're Blackmon, and Mark Aguirre.
Dirk's Legacy will never fade away.
Can you do one on Jordan?
can u make gsw before curry era also the sixers in post iverson and pre embiid era
cavs before lebron and post price era
knicks after ewing era
blazers on post drexler era
jazz in post malone and pre mitchell era
Sup andy
Ok now it's time for you to do one own when they got Dirk the era
In the 1984 draft the Mavericks picked Sem Perkins at no.4 while Charles Barkley was picked at no.5. at the same draft they picked Terrance Stunsburry at no.15 while John Stockton was picked at no.16. So basically it should have been Stockton and Barkley, in Dallas! With Rolando Blackman and Mark Aguire! With Derek Harper and Dale Ellis on the banch...
And they could have trade Jay Vincent for a descent center and build a dinasty.
Do the heat next then every other like lbj kd etc
You should make this a series. “How good were they before....(insert player name)?
💯
3:53 I thought Rolando Blackman was Draymond Green.
I see a donkey
Jason kidd looking A LOT like Lonzo in the thumbnail.
They're an interesting franchise. In their 40 years, they've almost always had a legit star on the roster. They were a decent team in the 80s. It's a shame that they couldn't make that mid 90s core work. Kidd, Mashburn, and Jim Jackson
3:57 poppa Bennett?
Jason Kidd in the thumbnail looks exactly like lonzo ball
Now review the Nash/Dirk era till now :)
I love you
Do a d'lo video 👌🏿
Remineds me of the okc thunders
Maybe Westbrook will lead OKC to a title soon! One of these coming years.
Dirk and nash were a nasty combo
That has to be the best drafting by any team ever to hit on every pick for 3 years is crazy
I think you should do
How good was Baron Davis
Dick Motta was the Mavericks' first head coach in 1980, two years after he led Washington to a title
How good were the Mavs before Dirk? They weren't...
Derek Ruff exactly my dude
They were fine in the 80s
Hooked on Chronics for like one year
Triple J ranch maybe?
@si Bongkukaye rose ain't the star of the t wolves, KAT is
Dallas should've kept Kidd around. Just look what he did for the Suns & New Jersey. Kidd even won a ring with Dirk. Those 2 could've won way more with each other
Hey! What about Michael Finley? He wasnt even mentioned - that's a shame.
Make more vids like that, like Bulls before Jordan or Cavs Before James, and do it for all time best player for every team
Bulls. Crap before and after MJ. Pretty simple. lol
Did nike ever retroed air nowitski??
90s was such a dark time for them, esp. in 93 and 94.
teddyjun1 they were basically what the knicks are now 😂😂😂
@@trentonmullins4948 I was too young to remember it. So I did not quite know how bad they were. Don Nelson basically saved this franchise along with Mark Cuban.
He missed the story of the 80's Mavs. They were a role model for clubs until the Roy Tarpley draft and career. Tarpley started the downfall with his drug use and suspensions and then they started overthinking the draft and you get Randy White, Doug Smith, Jim Farmer, Steve Alford, Cherokee Parks and Samaki Walker. Add in the team being cheap in the 90's plus bad draft picks and you get a wasted decade. Don Nelson was starting the turnaround and then Cuban willing to spend to be good started the rebuild. You also have to mention Aguirre became a cancer in the locker room and Dantley was as bad in Detroit. The mid 80's Mavs was a blast to watch and should have been good into the early 90's. Its similar to the Celtics and Len Bias dying. They just were a stronger franchise and recovered faster.
You should do how good were the cavs before LeBron and how good were the warriors before steph
The cavs before Lebron is like the cavs rn
