    These are such progressive videos. You’ve taught me to experiment on myself because you see it’s so dependent on “your” own metabolism. I got my monitor and my strips and have been learning so much about my body responses. I tested a common sweetener Pyure (stevia/euthritol blend) with no negative responses. But then I tested just black coffee and I saw the same thing. While the sweetener itself didn’t knock me out or spike my sugar, my black fat coffee allowed me to reach 4.5 ketones. That’s therapeutic ketosis! Goodbye sweetener. Thanks for the lesson!!! Amazing teaching.

    Great reviews both! I started with black coffee back in Nov 2018 and hated it since I was used to using 5 teaspoons of brown sugar each time I drank coffee which to me is about 3 to 4 cups a day! Well after more than a month of just black coffee, I almost cannot believe I even took sugar with it all these years! I LOVE black coffee now! Folks try it black and you will acquire the taste! If you go black you will never go back! Cheers! :)

      Not going to happen here. I’ve tried, but can’t adjust, and don’t enjoy it like I do with 2-3 drops of organic 100% stevia and creamer. My theory is, why drink something you don’t like. More power to you if you like drinking black coffee (I agree it’s healthier).

    Interesting test and props to u for doing it. However, the ‘noise’ in BH and K need to be considered. There are random variations in Blood Glucose as well as time-of-day trends that vary by person. My fasting BG (15 hours in) can vary up to 15 points and having consumed no sweeteners. The only way to deal with this is with a much larger sample size.

    Thank you both! Today I fasted all day, only water. Tonight I had a cup of dandelion tea and one packet of stevia w/ erythritol... 1-2 hrs later I checked my ketone level (strips). They'd dropped by half! Wow. Not good. This maybe a reason my weight loss is so slow, for me anyway. And no cheating. Staying in my macros + IF. I have a few brands. I'll now try my Sweet Leaf that you tested.

  • @susbider
    @susbider 6 лет назад +3

    Thanks for running the test. I have been using the SweetLeaf stevia extract (super concentrated - a "serving" is 1/80 tsp) with good success. I'm not sure how that compares to the version you used - with inulin as a carrier - but since I'm using just barely enough to hint at sweetness, I'm hoping that my metabolism isn't terribly impacted by it. But I will definitely keep your tests in mind as I proceed.

    On today's morning of IF ketosis.. I wanted to try something different.. Just added some aspartame to my acv lemon drink, just before 3 hrs away from my eating window. But later, something unusual happened. I got headache and was dizzy within 2 hours and I didnt experience this before ever.. I was wondering, but didnt bother much and thought of keto flu (even after being on IF for so many days). But now I got my answer.. Am glad I found this experiment.. I basically got kicked out of keto due to the aspartame. My body stopped fueling me. Thats what caused that dizzy headache due to hypoglycemia! God dang I didnt continue it and got cautious.. No more stevia or aspartame on morning drinks during fasting for sure !! Thanks to you doctor for this lovely patient experiment. I hope this reaches all IFers out there..

    Good effort. It's the maltodextrin and dextrose which have very high glycemic index that are causing your blood sugars to go up. Even the "pure stevia" sounds like it included fillers because pure stevia extract is 300 times sweeter than sugar. So the "3/8th teaspoon" used would have been equivalent to 112.5 teaspoons of sugar in sweetness. Try these sweeteners in liquid form.

    My experience with stevia in coffee matches yours. It is taking me out of ketosis, stalling weight loss, because I drink about 5 cups spread throughout the day. I thought it was the heavy cream, but it is not. Was testing glucose only. Ketone testing tells the true story with stevia for a very insulin-resistant person. Also have not been able to get blood sugars lower than the 110-130 range except occasionally. Trying to stay off Trulicity and statins, which doc already wrote prescriptions for and I have not yet taken. At 1 month checkup that was low enough for doc to give me more time. 3-month checkup on A1c/triglycerides/HDL is tomorrow. 27 lbs down until I stalled out - when I added coffee/cream/stevia back to my diet last month. Struggling not to regain that weight. So glad for this video, thank you!

    First, I'm not surprised I chose Equal when I used sweeteners. Second, I very much disliked Tab. One of my sisters went on a Tab, grapefruit and egg diet. She still has a quarter size spot on her scalp with no hair as a direct result of that way of (not) eating. She's now morbidly obese. I'm 69 and fast and cut out the majority of sugar, sweeteners and eat only what I prepare 95% of the time. Go out to eat very occasionally. I'm a two time cancer survivor and am doing all I can to avoid disease. I never thought I'd have coffee without cream and sugar. Here I am drinking black. Thanks for your informative posts!

    Question: have been told when OMAD, if you drink anything with Stevia (love Sweet Leaf) ie 'if it tastes sweet you break your fast' which has been interpreted as 'will throw you out of ketos' - yet that does not appear to be true from the vid's you'all have been so thoughtful to provide.

    it took me 4 months to work out that sucralose was making me stall. sucralose was not raising my blood sugar or lowering my ketones but must have been holding up my baseline INSULIN level. have removed it and now back on track

    • @ShabbyBoutique

      spive21 I had the same issue. I was using like 12-14g of the Da Vinci sugar free syrups for flavor. Thought I'd save money just buying regular coffee instead of all the different flavored ones and flavoring it instead with them, not even a full serving remember. I had a major stall as well even though testing blood sugar on several occasions using it showed only a spike of maybe 5 points in the first half hour and then back to normal. So I stopped using them so they are just there on the coffee bar for company if they want it.

    Small suggestion to make this work more relevant: One last test. Include a run with table sugar as a baseline.
    Black coffee is not really the baseline. People who are real black coffee fans would rather put kerosene in their coffee than ANY sweetener. But many people simply have to have a sweetener of some sort.
    I think you DID, however proved that ingesting anything - even black coffee - does act to break a ketogenic fast. Maybe that matters only to those trying to IF toward driving down serum insulin.

    Can you test the accuracy of the Precision. Do 4 tests with one minute a part to see the variance. Both glucose and ketones.
    Thank's for a great channel.

      Agreed. It'd be best to show that baseline as - unfortunately - the readings sometimes vary quite a bit even within seconds of eachother and all other variables remaining constant.

  • @misslydialove

    I’d think that you’d have to do at least a 7 day test for your baseline levels, and then a 7 day test for each product that you are evaluating just to get a bit more data about each one is affecting your readings. Just doing one day of testing for each thing is too easy to be thrown off by other factors and makes the results less conclusive. I know that’s a lot of testing but it would be much more accurate than just one day per product. Thanks for doing this though, it’s very interesting to watch and gives a lot of food for thought, and also inspiration to test things in ones own body to see how things affect us as individuals.

    I've been waiting on this video! Thanks so much for doing this experiement. I really appreciate it! Although as we saw here, results can vary, person-to-person, in general it looks like all sweeteners--even Stevia are not good when fasting (and artificial sweeteners, to no surprise, are still BAD). Looks like I will either kick the coffee habit or give up Stevia in my keto coffee during IF. I will do Stevia only during my eating window.

    Awesome video. Thank you for the detailed information. I have recently switched from S&L to pure sucralose (not Splenda). I add literally a pinhead of sucralose and my coffee is perfect - lightly sweet. It also tastes just like sugar - no chemical aftertaste.

    I love these videos because I tend to be more like Keith. I test very much like him. I have never had ketone readings as high as Becky's! I admit I am a bit jealous!

    What sugar substitute is good for you and taste like sugar?
    I've been using Splenda and drinking Diet Lipton Green Tea with Aspartame for years.
    I would like to find something to replace these sugars but taste as sweet as Splenda and Aspartame.

    Hey guys, hope you all and Kelly are doing well. I just got a CGM (FreeStyle Libre 3) and it's been a real eye opener. It gives me real time impact and helps tremendously with glucose management. Looks like I'll be moving to black coffee...it will be just like out in the field in the Army again, but at least the coffee will be hot not cold. I had a question about A1C versus the GMI that CGMs compute. I've done a little research on it but was hoping that you might cover that in a future video. I've also read that CKD can really skew A1C results. You may have covered this already, if so I apologize, maybe I just missed it. Anyway, Anessa and Cindy say hi...Duffy

    Hi Docs. Does it matter if you put half a packet of sweet n low? Will it have a difference or just the same results as you tested with 1 and a half packets? Thanks.

    To answer one of your initial posting comments about erythritol, I use erythritol in my coffee, but I drink decaffeinated coffee, because for “me“ caffeine spikes my blood glucose level. Twice a week I mix decaffeinated coffee, heavy cream, ice and water with a squirt of erythritol and it is my Starbucks frap replacement! I find myself looking forward to my twice a week quart of coffee. Remember, everybody is different, so this may not work for you. The only way you will know is to test yourself before and after gulping down this delightful stuff.

    Love your videos! You are informative, practical, down-to-earth and so likable!
    Since doing keto, I am experiencing leg cramps-intense!- almost every morning. It wakes me up in a very unpleasant way. I’m taking calcium citrate and magnesium citrate every night. I take potassium during the day and use pink or grey salt. What am I missing or doing wrong?

    • @MegaWandak
      @MegaWandak 6 лет назад +1

      Laura Green there are several kinds of magnesium. Magnesium glycinate is more absorbent , they also have an oil and gel.Consider taking vitamin D. Some studies suggest that increasing your vitamin D can help your body to absorb magnesium. Hope this helps

      wanda arns: I do take a D3/K2 combo. But will def look into the glycinate oil or gel. Should I rub it right into my calves at night before bed?

    • @MegaWandak
      @MegaWandak 6 лет назад +1

      Laura Green yes! Magnesium is so very important! Have you tried also using pink Himalayan salt? Or even using electrolytes? Just trying to help you troubleshoot, though the bottom line is magnesium and the quality of it, that's what's important when supplementing. Jigsaw magnesium is very good Dr. Beckers gel absorbs quickly too.😀

      wanda arns Yes, I use either pink Himalayan or grey salt on my food, cream of tartar in my lemon/ACV water for potassium and I take a potassium supplement throughout the day. I take the cal and mag citrate at night currently.

    The equivalent of 1 tbs of sugar is quite a lot. I wonder what your results would have been with the equivalent of 1 tsp of sugar.
