I told my doctor I wanted a C-Peptide and she told me that Medicare would not pay for and also said she didn’t know why I would want one. I told her I wanted to see my markers for inflammation and she said everyone has inflammation and that’s how it was. I told her I would get one on my own and it was important and I know eating the way I do I’ve lost lots of inflammation in my body. I’m getting another doctor.

Sandra, do you take vitamins during the fasting period or restrict them to the 4 hr also (if you take them)?

Sandra. I too fast 20/4. I start at 4p ending at 8p. I eat very low carb during that time. Sometimes I eat 1 biggish meal and a snack, sometimes 2 meals. It just depends what satisfies me. Outside of my eating window I will have a small cup of herbal tea or decaf coffee with a touch of cream. This has further lower my fasting glucose and has started the scale moving again after a long stall.

Since I’ve eliminated all sugars except for Stevia, and live a low carb lifestyle, I’ve lost 40 lbs and kept it off. I’m not diabetic but I’m so much healthier and still use Stevia daily. She said to me (exact words), “ I REFUSE to order those tests. I order tests for TREATMENT, so I am REFUSING to order that test.” My mind was blown, I can tell you! I think the key to changing from a SAD diet to the PHD is allowing yourself some grace and a keto friendly treat or drink occasionally. I went from 260 pounds to 143 and used stevia, monk fruit and allulose the whole time. My A1c is 4.6, my blood pressure went from borderline high to 118/65, resting heartrate from 120 to 70, arthritis,, sleep apnea,, allergies,, acid reflux,, chronic pain,, fibromyalgia, fatigue, mood swings and much more gone! No meds, even over the counter anymore. Lipids are beautiful also. Going on 2 1/2 years and I think I can do this, but not if I can't live a little lol! When a few years later I had gone from 170 pounds to 218 pounds, I thought there might be wrong with the advice I had been taking, but I didn’t think it had anything to do with my beloved grains so I went vegan. What helped me with a 24 hour fast every day was literally going to work each day. I would only have a large coffee at work up until it ran out at lunch time then I would have a non sugar cinnamon tea till I got off work. For dinner I would have a 6oz fatty steak, usually a rib eye, a whole avocado with salt and pepper, a pile of kimchi , a hard boiled egg and some mixed nuts. Along with some mild exercise each day, literally a few minutes of push ups, some arm curls and some squats, I was the most healthy I've ever been in my life. As soon as I retired it became a bit more difficult to keep your mind off of eating like when at work which helped distract me and take my mind off of eating. Retirement sucks and now I've started my own business and hope to get back to fasting like I did in the past.

I've been using stevia for over 20 years. I've been able to lose weight while using it to sweeten my morning single cup of coffee. I do not make keto snacks. However, I didn't hear Cynthia refer to any studies regarding stevia so I wonder based on what has she determined 'it's (stevia) not benign".
Secondly, I live in an area where ticks abound; I can't hike or mow my yard without being bit (unless I wear clothing treated with Permethrin). I have been bitten countless times over 36 years. I've never had or been diagnosed with Lymes disease. My daughter had Lymes Disease when she was two years old. There was a study that showed steviosides do a better job of treating Lymes than antibiotics.

Maybe it has its benefits but I learned the hard way that Stevia has side effects. I was on a meal plan drinking 2-3 ginger ales with it a day. My arms and limbs cramped up terribly and I was so listless that I thought I would faint. Once I stopped everything got better. Maybe the natural Stevia in moderation is different. The fake sweetness is too much for me I just avoid it altogether.

The women would gather in the morning as a type of female bonding ritual to make and drink the Stevia tea and then go about their day. I have no idea if this is true, only that the article said that it was a very effective means of birth control for their villages and apparently harmless to the women, while keeping their tribal numbers at 2 to 3 children per family on average. I wish there were a way to verify any of this.

    • @winter_s_44
      @winter_s_44 Год назад +5

I think what she means when she says it’s not benign is that it still creates a trigger in you physiologically for sweetness. When you put something sweet on your tongue or even smell sweet things, your body starts preparing for digestion which means there could be insulin responses for food you aren’t even eating or for food that doesn’t ultimately get processed by your digestive system. So if you still have insulin response due to the perception of sweetness, then it is not a benign substance just because it doesn’t necessary effect your blood sugar levels once ingested. For those who don’t experience negative side effects from stevia and who are keto/carnivore for reasons OTHER than insulin resistance, it may be fine. But for others who are trying to battle insulin resistance and reduce the amount of insulin released into their system, ingesting sweet tasting substances of any kind is not doing them any favors. I think this is what she means.

The best approach to fasting is the one that you will stick to!!!!! Also, there are studies that show that eating earlier in the day is actually better for you. Something about it coinciding with circadian rhythm and everything. I accept the statement as true but I have my meal at night.
For me, I get nighttime hunger And I have P TSD from crying myself to sleep at night because I was hungry from when I followed traditional diet advice. So dealing with any sort of hunger pangs that night is too triggering. If I push my meal till 6, I don't get any hunger pains at night. So I'll sacrifice the optimal fasting time for sustainable.

A four ounce envelope lasts me 3 to 4 months! 1/32 of a teaspoon sweetens a large mug of coffee just fine, the key is to use just enough to take the bitterness out of whatever you are sweetening thus reducing the dopanie effect! . This has to stop.....I'm feeling worse from the meds. I promised myself if I ever reached 200 lbs I would do something drastic to reverse it. I think I found my hope here! Everything's better with butter. 👄
I've quit the cheese addiction a hundred times. A long time ago, I assumed it was The New Health Food since it was carb free. But cheese got problems. Saturated fat isn't the poison that the sugar industry propagandized for decades, but cheeze is globs of fat, which is a problem for me since I binge on it like ice cream, so I [shouldn't] bring it into the house, either. A pound of mozzarella will be gone in two days. And where does the milk come from that they turn into cheese. However, if you're having good success with your diet, I don't advocate you changing anything based on my experience. You're already doing better than most. E.g., sprinkling some parmesan cheese on your veggies is no problem, certainly not like sitting down with a huge chunk of cheese for a snack like I would do. It's just that the mention of "butter and cheese" always starts me up.
Veganism is an ideal, something to aim for, but when we choose to fall off the wagon, there's always tomorrow to get back on. I'm satisfied knowing that I eat a lot less meat than the SAD Standard American Diet.

    Well well well
Finally a doctor that confronts the miss information that has pervaded the health care system.
On the 27/07/22 I embraced your recommendations with “Devastating” results..
In my 72nd year the wheels were starting to come off with most of my bloodwork heading south rather rapidly..
I have shed more than 8 kilograms to date, yes! 17lbs. Of course my blood pressure has always been on the low side shot up consistently around 170/110. BP tablets here I come. OMG my dreams and aspirations for retirement sailing around the antipodes were going as far south as my bloods.
Well one of the youngsters here in Port Bouvard Marina in Dawsville Western Australia needed some help moving his boats location. It ended up having to shuffle 5 boats and that makes a busy day. At the end of the day he needed to load his dingy on the deck but he was enervated and didn’t want to do what had to be done. I insisted and when it was done he asked the question “What do you eat?”
My response was not much. This is the truth. I could eat an elephant in the past as long as it had rice gravy with roast potatoes .
I now find eating is not hunger driven. I eat now as a means to the end, supplying my body with the nutritional requirements my body needs.
My annual check up with GP yesterday was a hoot with my doctor asking after my condition. My response was EXCELENT. He said my bloods agreed with my statement. All my tests had shown remarkable improvements and my BP is now consistently around the 115/75.
This lifestyle has amazing advantages, health and wealth. My budget has seen amazing savings. No cakes, coke sweet chilly sauce and the list goes on and on with toxic Junk filling our refrigerators.
Provisioning my vessel for extended cruising is soooo simple now. A fishing rod and some lures.
THANY YOU ALL for your encouragement and guidance.
The devastating result is that in a matter off 6 weeks I have become a 54 year old septuagenarian and a “ Tough Old Bastard” according to the young bloke in the marina.
I extol the virtues of this lifestyle but unfortunately the adage of “ there are none so blind as those that will not see” is so sadly evident.
The change is simple but the determination to see it through takes an enormous amount of discipline but for me the results are inspiring
    Thanks again.

Interesting topic. One thing to keep in mind is that some of these studies use small packet sweeteners, which not uncommonly are mixed with dextrose and maltodextrin as bulking agents and fillers. These certainly can affect glycemic and insulin responses.
But Stevia on its own doesn’t seem to have any compelling evidence on effect on sugar and insulin levels. I’ve corroborated this with my own glucose monitor.
I find that Stevia drops are pretty clean. They are mostly Stevia and water.
Always look at the sweetener ingredients on the package.
Also, things like aspartame have evidence which show total absorption in stomach and small intestine, so the issue of gut microbiota dysbiosis is not particularly conclusive either.
In the end, are sweeteners bad? Maybe. Maybe not. But certainly better than sugar…

I agree, and there is a lot more to sweeteners than this study would have been able to see, this is also true about a lot of things relating to diabetes and even general nutrition. A lot of time it isnt what you eat, it's how you eat it and what you eat with it, your activity level, your general health and a lot more. I dont get a glucose response from a slice of whole grain wheat bread when I have it with 2 eggs and some sausage, but if I ate that bread alone I am sure it would for example.

True story: I was having problems with a tooth that had a root canal done on it. I found out by accident that taking stevia and swishing it around in my mouth stopped the throbbing. I did this first with just Listerine but it felt like I was burning the insides of my mouth. Because of the taste, I took some stevia. Almost instant relief, not only from the awful taste and the burning feeling but also the throbbing tooth. I did this over a long weekend before I could see a dentist. By the time of the dental appointment, the tooth pain and throbbing had subsided. Stevia is good for more things than just being a sugar substitute when baking.

Yes, I believe stevia is alkaline and anti-bacterial. Tooth decay requires an acidic environment. As far as sweetness itself stimulating insulin goes, walking by a bakery or steakhous or even just thinking of food can do the same. I doubt it would be harmful.

Skipping breakfast on your intermittent fast is a mistake many make on their diet. Instead, follow your body's natural inner clock, the Circadian Rhythm. You'll lose more weight, faster and sleep better too. Here's how...
Eat your largest meal between 7 and 9am (the Stomach Meridian) "Break"fast and your 2nd meal (last meal) between Noon and 2pm (the Small Intestine Meridian). Fast between 2pm and 7am. Repeat. Do not snack between meals.
Remember this, the digestive system weakens as the day progresses, making dinner the worst time to eat. Eating with our Circadian Rhythm works with the metabolism, not against it. Give yourself a week to adjust.

Interesting comment by Ms T regarding the cardiologist response about utilizing a CGM. I was diagnosed as diabetic in Sept. 2023 and had to request a Rx for a glucometer kit. I was told that it was unnecessary since I wasn't taking diabetic meds! Reluctantly I did receive the Rx and have since reversed my HbA1c to a non diabetic number thanks to the information I have gleaned from Drs. Hallberg, Berry, Fung, Lustig, Davis and Means, and Rev. Pollock. I am grateful for the work you people are doing.

Two wonderful practitioners helping us all help ourselves! I wish we could have MORE access to things like lab tests because I never know exactly whether any particular supplement or diet change is helping or not. And what time lapse might be expected for various diet and lifestyle changes. I've not been sick in 10 yrs and never go to doctors for routine testing but during Covid I decided I should probably get established with an MD who takes Medicare. When I mentioned that I had seen a Functional Med Doc the year before for lab tests but can't afford private pay, she leaned back in her chair, flapped her hands in front of her and said "just so you know, I'm not a Functional Medicine doctor and I'm not going to do all that testing and nutrition stuff". I kid you not! It was as if she was holding a cross in front of her to fend off the evil spirits, lol. At that point I just kept my mouth shut, let her go thru her std questionnaire and do the routine lab tests which were all good results. I'll never go back there.

Beverly from St Louis Missouri. First time on your live session. I have been doing the carnivore diet for 3 months. I started the diet because I was diagnosed with NAFLD. At my 3 month checkup these are my results. I dropped 19 lbs, my liver enzymes dropped ALT from 36 to 31 and AST from 36 to 26. As a side benefit my creatinine reduced from 0.83 to 0.76 and my GFR increased from 79 to 92. Non lab benefits. My energy is better, my gum disease is gone, my skin tags are gone my age spots are fading and some are gone and my skin feels so much softer. I still need to lose 65 lbs, so I am going to continue this journey. People often won't listen to you when you tell them how good the carnivor diet is, but when your body shows the results, they get more interested.

I have been on Keto or Carnivore for about 4 years. I started Keto by fasting with water only for 7 days to get fat adapted as fast as posible. I mostly do organic Carnivore now, or throw in healthy organic Keto options from time to time. It only took about 4 months to get down to my ideal weight. I feel 25 years younger and in many way my health is better than it was when I was a child. I am now 62.

I just heard that a study found stevia more effective against lyme than commonly used treatments. That would certainly be a *huge* benefit. Food an nutrients are indeed the best medicine.

I have followed Dr. Berry's videos since late July of this year 2022. It is Sep 12, 22 today. I have dropped from 273 lbs to 245 already. My sleep apnea is permanently gone as is my GERD and I am off all stomach acid meds. I am wearing clothes I could not wear for the last 3 years. I am 69 yp and all my joint pain is gone too. My blood pressure has improved to the point where I am going to ask my GP to lower or eliminate one of the meds I am taking because my readings are beginning to get too low. I feel better than I can ever remember. I keep my carbs down easily below 30 g a day but average closer to 20 and am striving for 20 or less total. This type of eating has changed my life. I am anxioust to see my nbext blood panel in November. I got so sick of feeling sick and being put on pills that didn;t make me feel better. I live in SW Ohio.

And yet some people here in the comments are in so much denial that they are claiming these two doctors are fanatics. I trust Dr Berry over any typical medical doctor. If he believes stevia is best left avoided, then I believe him. Besides, if it's "artificial", that's all I need to know.

I am watching this after the live. I just want to say that I appreciate you so much. April of last year I had a “heart episode” at 47 years of age. I had a stint inserted into my LAD artery. I weight 275 pounds, and I was scared to death. I immediately got on a path to health. My cardiologist was wanting me to do low fat. But I have tried that a million times and it doesn’t work. I found you on RUclips and started learning. I am now down 65 pounds. I have stalled a little, so I am now going to do away with the stevia that I use everyday and cleaning up my diet a little more, more carnivore than keto, along with staring intermittent fasting. You are saving lives and I am thankful. I know that when I’m struggling, you will have the advice I need to continue on this health journey. ❤️

Thank you for this info. I have done keto, atkins and fasting off and on for the past 22 years and had a lot of success from it. The past few years I have severely struggled with my weight and new health issues. Watching this just made something click for me. The one thing I’ve been using a lot the past few years and rarely eliminated is ste stevia and sugar free drinks. I drink the electrolyte ice drinks and sugar free lemonade propell etc daily, several a day plus the sugar free chocolates and cookies several times a week. Even when I eliminated the candies i still did the drinks. I think you just solved the mystery to what’s keeping me here!!! Im addicted to sugar free sweeteners and I need to get it out. I did a fast 2 years ago and last year with protein drink, half and half and chia seeds only no sweets nothing else and dropped 6-8 lbs within a week. I just didn’t see the stevia and sucrolose as the problem sadly and it has made weight loss and keeping the weight off impossible. Im cutting them out today. I want to lose weight so badly. Thank you

I have done intermittent fasting and less carbs and sugar for over six months. Added apple cider vinegar in water too. I drink and add Stevia in water and food still and I think it has kept me from losing weight. I am eating healthy fats but have this big sweet dragon that I was feeding with Stevia thinking I could still lose weight. Thanks for this new information. I will make some changes. I live in SC.

In February 2022 my A1C was 10.4, and this was 2 months after I had stopped drinking 32 oz of regular Coca Cola. In April it was 9.8, so my doctor prescribed Metformin, but I could not tolerate the dosage he wanted me to take. I started taking ACV w/mother, too. In August my A1C was 6.6. I stopped Metformin on my own and introduced IF. I’ve lost a total of 68 pounds, but need to lose another 100. I’ve been keeping a record of what I eat and my BG (pricking my fingers) and I DEFINITELY saw how healthy foods spiked my blood sugar. I’m switching to the carnivore diet.

I was using stevia drops for the longest time on keto with no problems, but then all of a sudden I started having bad gut issues, allergic response, and insomnia. Took a while to figure out what it was by elimination, but eventually found it to be stevia. I’m allergic to ragweed, and apparently stevia is in the same family. Once I eliminated the stevia, the swelling under my eyes and sour stomach went away. When I added it back, it came immediately back. I eliminated it again and haven’t had those symptoms. Still trying to figure out the insomnia, but I’m sure I will.

When I was on Keto and using Stevia, I eventually figured out Stevia made me hungry and led to me breaking the Keto diet. Now I do a fairly restrictive Carnivore with water being my only drink other than a little ACV with a squeeze of lemons juice, but nothing sweet. The Carnivore diet is much easier to stay on, and I now believe it is the healthiest version of low carb that there is. I also eat OMAD with occasional extended fasts of2 to 4 days. Fasting is much easier when on the Carnivore eating plan. 🌵🌵🌵
