I personally fast for the therapeutic effects of autophagy, and would love to see a similar video but with autophagy in mind, such as what foods break autophagy and at what amounts, as well as how long should one fast before autophagy resumes after eating those foods and amounts.

Michael P sounds like bro science to me, check our Dr Eric Berg’s video on artificial sweeteners on keto. I like Dr Ekberg’s videos for the most part but that sweet taste spiking insulin is very variable and it does not affect everyone’s digestive system in the same way.

I'm binge watching all your videos and learning so much! I just discovered that I love bulletproof coffee and was surprised that I didn't even mind not adding any Stevia to it! I'm only adding 1tbsp of grass fed butter to it and it's helping me stay on course to try and fast for at least 18 hours, sometimes 20! I did keto a few years ago, lost 50 pounds and unfortunately put about 40 back on😭. I started back aggressively about 3 weeks ago and just started adding the IF to the regimen. I'm down 7 pounds already!!! Thank you for this valuable information! I'm hoping to get to my goal by the end of this summer!

Interesting info, my son and me did a test with stevia in a fasted state, just pure stevia in water, tested blood glucose befor and after 10 minutes and after 30 minutes. Both our bloodsugar dropped after the stevia, my logical thinking was just what you explained, that do to the brains perception of sweetness it must trigger insulin but since we did not eat any real sugar it just lowered the already present glucose in the blood stream.

I don't understand why the control group would be given Sucralose. I would want to know the insulin response of the group receiving Stevia compared to those who did not receive ANY sweetener. I'm not sure how a "no significant difference" finding between a group that received Stevia and a group that received Sucralose is meaningful. It does nothing to negate the claim that artificial sweeteners can elevate the insulin response.

Thank you so much for your clear, concise videos. Thank you for educating us! I happened to find your videos when looking for more keto videos. I have been doing low carb, then keto for 10 months now. I have lost 80 pounds and feel amazing. Instead of 45, I feel like I am 30 again! Your videos about fasting should be mainstream - there is so much truth in them, but people don't want to give up their food! My dad has been "preaching" to me for years about the benefits of OMAD and I finally get it. He has been doing OMAD for decades, before it was a "thing". He is 75 and like a horse! He is so healthy. I did my first 40 hour fast a few days ago, and I felt amazing - I wasn't even hungry when I broke the fast. Hearing you talk about the hunger waves coming and going and not sticking around helped me SO much. I would just drink some water and distract myself and they went away! Thank you for devoting your life to educating people!

Dr. Berry talks also about "cephalic phase insulin response" - insulin spikes when a sweet taste is perceived. I tested myself with stevia, testing BG before consuming tea with stevia and an hour after, and my reading actually went down. Dr. Berry says this effect only affects some people and that you need to test it to see if it applies to you. Since it doesn't seem to for me, I'm continuing to have stevia (just 5 drops) in my coffee when fasting. Thanks for going through all these other things, too!

    • @drekberg
      @drekberg  5 лет назад +9

It's actually the other way around. The cephalic response assumes that there is some sweet food coming and produces a little insulin. When there is nothing in the food to raise blood sugar, the insulin acts on existing blood sugar and it goes down a little bit.

I’m in hour 36 of a planned 72 hour fast. Still learning a lot from Dr. Ekberg. I’ve found that coffee is a great appetite suppressant for me. So yesterday I bought Stevia for the first time in my life and some heavy organic cream. I put very minute amounts of each in 2 cups of coffee this morning. They were delicious but now I’m thinking that I should not have added the Stevia. Amazon is bringing me some Ketone test strips today. I’m anxious to see what those results are.

I make my own cold brew coffee in batches and I drink a serving each morning with 2T cream (I'm now reducing that to 1T cream based on the information in this video). I just discovered that 1 serving of black cold brewed coffee has 3 grams of carbs - should I switch to iced coffee that has 1 carb per serving? This video clarified some important points for me - the 1 Percenters, avoiding sweet altogether, I need to reduce my fat intake. Thank you!!

I've had positive results just eating butter while 'fasting.' Very gentle on the body. I find a full fast makes my hair fall out and it's psychologically a bad idea for me given a history with anorexia, so I find modifying a fast with some butter works for me. Been eating butter all day and my blood sugar is 54/3.0.

That should be fine as long as there are not artificial sweeteners in it. It would be like an herb tea which is fine.

I am so glad I found you.! My family have been on a “Keto” new life Y6 and it seems to be working (a sister has lost 49 lbs:). So I have watched a good many of this doc’s videos and they make good since. YOU go further with your explanations.and I needed that. The OMAD is really not bad. I really focus on what are the triggers for me. Sooo, wish me luck or remember me in your prayers. I will document with pic.
    By bye for now

    Well, I had a 6-day / 144 hour water only fast; I was worried about 2 questions:
    1) How can I start taking food without health risk, revive my gut bacteria without diarrhea or constipation?
    2) How does it affect the ketosis, the starving of (potential) cancer cells and the health benefits on cellular level?
My colon cancer was removed on oct 31st 2018 (nice Halloween job for surgeons!) and I had a short chemo - short because the German oncologists said that after 4 cycles there were no more survivors than after the traditional 8 cycles, and I didn't tolerate the Capecitebina, had only one complete cycle and when I lost the skin under my feet I reduced the second on my own bu 10% and the remaining two were cancelled by the docs; I was a distance runner and think that my liver still can easily handle the change between ketosis and sugar-burning.
So I started to eat with a tiny helping of mixed salad (green, rasped carrot, red and white cabbage, a slice of bell pepper, one garlic clove), and two small chunks of fatty meat from the Chinese take-away restaurant (fried pork ribs) and a medium-sized grapefruit; I plan to double or triple the size of the helpings in a OMAD diet, until I feel that the gut function is restored.
How will that a potentially grown new cancer?
Will ketosis and the other benefits restart sooner than after a return to a "normal" diet which for me would be salads, veggies, chicken and small helpings of pork, some fruit OMAD?
