- North and South Korea's Olympic teams have announced plans to bring back the Unification Flag to march together into the 2018 Winter Olympics. Japan doesn't like one particular speck of it, though.

Just to mention, the Republic of Korea's(South Korea) Constitution it states that the Republic of Korea's territory is the entire Korean Peninsula and it's adjacent islands. Also, the USA approved President Rhee to have the Korean Constitution made. Now were there disagreements from the US Government, more than likely, but as far as I researched, there was no huge conflict where the US pressured the Korean Government to change the Constitution. About the tiny Liancourt Rocks, here is how I view it. Before Japan officially took over Joseon(Kingdom before Republic of Korea) in 1910, Joseon owned the Liancourt Rocks. When Japan signed the agreement to leave all territory that they taken over by force, they left the Liancourt Rocks also. So if Japan the Liancourt Rocks because General MacArthur made them sign a surrender agreement, wouldn't that make the Liancourt Rocks part of Korea? Just my thought and History can prove me wrong. What you all think, especially you Vixillographer?

Nikolai the tanker Husky yeah! Can't they come to a compromise? Like having the western rock Korean and the eastern one Japanese? Or they could be nice and give the rocks to Tuvalu or the Maldives, which really needs more, less flood-prone land to settle. By doing this, nobody will get an EEZ boost!
Like, a referendum is impossible, mainly because of the lack of people there. And does these rocks have a settlement record at all? Can't every uninhabited island be classified as literally, and figuratively, No-man's land?

Just to mention everybody: That little dot, which is called in Korea Dokdo, is as we all know very tiny, but very very very important to us korean, because this is the symbol of independet after getting colonized by the japanies 1910. We first found Dokdo in the 6th century by an general. And in the 15th century, Korea (at that time Joseon) officially announced, that Dokdo was Koreas Territory by the King Sejong the Great(also invented the korean alphabet). This was way more before Japan said that Dokdo was theirs(to be exact about 200years). And actually it is still Koreas Territory and not an illegal Territory they claimed by wars or conflicts. So… Dokdo is clearly Koreas Territory.
Why did they make it that shade of blue i wonder? they both have dark blue and red in their flags, so why not make their shared flag in one of those colors, instead of light blue?
Why don't they just split the two islands?
If it's uninhabited rock as show in the pic, the US, China, or Russia could solve the problem by making the island disappear overnight and deny it ever existed.... or claim it was annexed by Atlantis. :D
Maybe our two Korean countries should do something like what the Malay states did when they formed the Federation of Malaya; or now, Federation of Malaysia. Unite as one country, and rule their own places as states of the country, while taking turns in becoming the Federal ruler. In Malaysia, the 9 kings of the 9 sovereign Malay states take turns in becoming the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, every 5 years. Although Korea no longer have a king, they can still take turns with, let's say their President or Prime Minister, who shall, at a time when they are not the President or Prime Minister, become the Chief Minister of their state. This may solve the whole conflict I think?

So funny, I never noticed that little dot. No doubt it is directed at the Japanese. Korea has many more and larger island than that little rock in the middle of nowhere.

i am half korean i would be so happy when south and north reunified, my dad is south korean but adopted 1977 if the war didn't happen my dad wouldn't be adopted

That's a really dull and boring flag. Doesn't really represent anything except for the physical geography of the Korean peninsula. Couldn't they have thought of something more creative, or something better?
Ahmed Given the history these two nations have had with each other, the Taegukgi is no longer a pan-Korean symbol but is now just attributed to South Korea, and using that flag for a united Korean team would be very provocative for the officials in the North.
As much as it's not much, it's the best there is. Anything else besides this and the flags of North and South Korea would seem rather non-Korean.

Not sure why Korea needed to go for a map flag when unified Korea in past had it's own flag which is a bit similar to the S Korean flag but is still different enough to stand as a separate flag with enough colour & design difference. That flag also looks quite beautiful, in my opinion better than the S Korean flag & doesn't have any territorial dispute in it either.

It's never about the islands in those cases, but about the 'exclusive economic zone' in the sea surrounding the islands. It stretches up to 200 nautical miles from the coast (230 miles or 370 km), according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Dokdo is rightly Korean territory. Why Japan insists that Dokdo is their own territory because during Russia-Japan war in 1907, Japan unlawfulness occupied Dokdo to use their military watchtower. Even Dokdo was Daehan Jeguk's(the Korean Empire) territory. 1900. Oct. 25th Gojong who was Daehan Jeguk's emperor published in the Korean Empire Ordinance 41 which reconfirmed Dokdo's territorial sovereignty. But 1910. Aug. 29th, Korea was colonized by Japanese Empire and Japan persecuted Us. Then 1943. Dec. 1st. on the Cairo declaraction said "Japan will be also be expelled from all her territories which she has taken by violence and greed.
The aforesaid three great powers, mindful of the enslavement of the people of Korea, and determined that in due course Korea shall become free and independent." and 1945. Jul. 26th, on the Potsdam declaraction said "The terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out and Japanese soveregnty shall be be limited to the islands of Honshu, hokkaido, Kyushu, shikoku, andsuch minor island as we determine.". THE FACT IS THAT DOKDO WAS NOT INCLUDIED ON THIS DECLARACTION!! Japan admitted the Potsdam and Cairo declaractions etc. But Now they Know Dokdo's economic values

The government of my native land making a big deal over a 70+ year-old territorial dispute over a couple of uninhabited rocks in the sea, while there are actually important problems, both domestically and internationally, that plague it. It's also quite rich given that the flag of Japan was and is still controversial, even within Japan, for its historical associations with Japanese imperialism and colonialism. It's amazing just how embarrassing Japanese officials are in their attempts at "restoring the honour and dignity of Japan". 🤦♂️
