- Flags are kinda cool. Here's a 60 second look into how a good flag is made.

Some complex flags look great. The key is to have a simple basic shape and then details, like with the eagle of Prussia. From far away, you can still tell it's an eagle, so it's recognizable. From close up, you can see all the details, and it looks better than a generic blank bird-shape. (This also applies to things that aren't birds, but Prussia is one of my favourite examples.)
The welsh flag is still awesome even if the dragon is kind of complicated.
Roman Neill there is no such thing as "wrong" here, because it is an opinion. You don't get to deside what is good or bad for other people neither can vexillogist at least when talking about how good something looks.

Well, yes, but actually no.
You see, a flag, unlike a coat of arms, is only THAT flag if it is drawn in EXACTLY the same way as the original, so a flag from memory would definitely be slightly wrong.
Complex shapes on flags can be cool, who cares if I can't be drawn
because the point of a flag is to be simple and easily recognizable, look at Spain, they had a white flag with their coat of arms but it looked too much like France's and England's flag so they changed it to the bi-color design.
I can actually draw the flag of Spain from memory (the detailed Royal Seal and all) but it takes several painstaking minutes (which is too much for a flag really).

Also most flags use 2-3 colors, 4 colors flags look orrendous.
Arabian 4-colored flags look awesome though.

+jardon Jones Then you haven't seen the flag of Bhutan. Diagonal divided, dragon in the middle. If you have only grey-scales, it only depends on the side the dragon faces ... something you have to know and not to guess.
The flag of the seychelles works even in grey-scales.
of course bhutan has a dragon on it, this is a "asian dragon", quite difficult too draw, but as unique as a "european dragon",
no other european country has a flag designed or quite unique,as a the "welsh one", there are many based on crosses and tricolours, and "political & graphic signs" ask a "vexiollogist", those who are experts in international flags...

Also usually symmetry in flags looks nice so it's recognizable on any side, for example Canada's flag.
yes i agree. But you want to know two flags that you will confuse with each other (including if one is facing backwards and the other isnt for whatever reason) Ireland's flag and Côte d’Ivoire's {Ivory Coast's) flags. They are legit copies. just Côte d’Ivoire's is mirrored.

How to draw a good flag

2) Draw a yellow-shaped star on the right corner
3) Draw a Hammer and Sickle crossing each other...

that_pac12 It's easy to make. First draw a cross with two perpendicular lines in the centre, then draw another one this time starting from the corners.
After that you can add the colors.

You may also wasn't to use white or yellow to seperate other colors. You can see this concept on every thumbnail flag, but also in flags like France, Belgium, and Norway.

What program would you suggest for making flags?
Any image editing program works. I use Pixelmator on my Mac but there's Gimp and Inkscape for PCs.

I disagree with the “so simple a child can draw it” rule. The flags of Albania 🇦🇱, Bhutan 🇧🇹 among the best in the world imo.
Here’s my rules:
• Take a (preferably) rectangle
• Use colours that have symbolic importance or just ones that are striking
• Include one element of medium to medium-high complexity that is (highly preferable) of some symbolic importance
(eg. Bhutanese Dragon 🇧🇹, Albanian bird thing 🇦🇱, union jack 🇬🇧, Nazi Cross, Qing dragon, Sri Lankan lion 🇱🇰, Indian wheel thing 🇮🇳, Japan’s old rising sun flag, Commie hammer&sickle)
Some of the most iconic flags in history haven’t been the easiest for school children to draw well :)

I tried making a flag for some sort of intergalactic cult where the entirety of the human galactic colonies are just a single small colony and the flag has the human arrows pointing upwards representing Power, Knowledge, Loyalty all in their own separate sizes symbolizing their importance

Honestly the best way to make a flag is to have a rectangular flag with probably around 13 alternating red and white horizontal stripes along with a blue canton with around 50 white stars inside in a 656565656 pattern meaning 6 in the odd rows and 5 in the even rows. If someone could draw up a visual representation for this that would be great, I can't draw very well.

I hate how some self-righteous vexillologists decide that a flag should only be a circle in a rectangular background or three bars of two different colors. More complicated and unique flags are better and they convey meaning and do not look like something a four year old could make in a minute.
Funny enough, a four-year old SHOULD be able to draw a flag easily. Complication defeats the purpose of flags in the first place. They were designed to be easily recognizable, so that allies and enemies would know who is flying that banner. If you can't tell that flag from an enemy or ally design, especially from far away like on a battlefield, that's usually a bad thing for you.
Even despite flags not being used on the battlefield like they were in the old days, the principles still carry on because it's still a good rule set for nation-state flags to follow.
U238 You miss the point that a good flag is a drawable flag. Being beautiful comes second. The Welsh flag or the Bhoutan flag look good but there are terrible because nobody can draw them.
U238 I'm an amateur vexillologist, and I think the flag of Wales is cool. Plus, the "Four year old should be able to draw the flag" thing isn't really a good standard to go by, as the flags of Romania, Chad, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands have proven.

A lot of great flags break these rules. The biggest one to me is the 2-3 basic colors. Many great flags have 2-5 but there can be a few more. If you only have 2-3 basic colors than you are limiting yourself.

My main attempt to design a flag is for a fictional para-naval force called the Sea Patrol (no connection with the Australian television series): it is at www.aappleyard.com/seapatrol/spbbig.gif Blue = sea. Anchor is frequent in sea flags. Corner marks represent rivets holding the badge on. Black edge to show the edge of the flag when it is on a boilersuit-based dark-blue action uniform. The letters S P are recognizable when seen backwards from the back side of the flag.

Good advice. I would quibble on the proportions, though. 2:1 flags aren't very common, although they can be quite nice, like Canada's. 3:2 and 2:5 are more common, and fly better. +Ceisiwr Serith 1:2 was more of a suggestion for a beginner who just wants to get started. I totally agree that it's not the only or even the best option.
