- This video examines the five principles of flag design in NAVA's famous pamphlet "Good Flag, Bad Flag". I explain the reason behind these principles and also their limitations.
0:00 - Intro
1:18 - Keep it simple
5:47 - Use meaningful symbolism
9:15 - Use 2 to 3 basic colours
12:46 - No lettering or seals
18:46 - Be distinctive or be related
21:29 - The limits of the rules

5:15 I totally agree. The Welsh flag is complex but a child can still replicate it fairly easily to a point where it is instantly recognisable.
I actually really liked the Welsh flag in kindergarden, it was one of the only ones I could memorize back then
As a Marylander, I am very proud of our flag. As an American, I am ashamed of most of the state flags. But, Arizona! I've lived there too and they are very proud of their flag.
fr!
As an Ohio person. I love my weirdly shaped flag
Yesssss! MD is one of the states most obsessed with its own flag and I would say it’s for good reason. You can find literally any type of clothing with the flag on it.
I'm a big fan of the style of this video. The way it's displayed like a power point presentation is great and as a flag fan myself I find myself returning to this video every now and then. Even though this isn't a vexillology channel. I hope you make more flag videos for whatever reason. Cheers.
Kosovo's flag is an intersting case, I suppose, because while I think that the design is pretty ordinary, the shape of Kosovo - a massively disputed territory - is of such importance to the nation that whacking it on the flag and saying, "These are our borders, and that's important," is a very bold political statement. I would hope that the Kosovo flag will evolve to something a bit better once its political future is somewhat more secured.
I would like to argue. I think that the Mexican flag looks great. Maybe because I grew up in the Southern US and grew up with a lot of Mexicans and Mexican influence. I just really like there flag though.
As a mexican I'm biased of course but I really hate flat design, I like me some complex flags that have alot going on.
yeah I also like the mexican flag. It looks great. _Unlike a few other flags)
I agree, I like the symbolism of the Eagle on the cactus eating the snake on the flag and I've seen art of it on murals at Mexican restaurants and street art in areas that have a big Hispanic population. I think it is really good symbolism for a flag.
@@fatedsculpture2596it’s also the legend of how the Aztec found Tenochtitlan.
I think it’s alright, but it looks too similar to Italy imo
Great video. I'm also a big fan of flags and my favorite one is maybe the Iranian. As you said in the video, the script works very well on it and it's partly because of how simple it is. It's just written the takbir (allah akbar) 11 times on top and 11 times on the bottom and the 2 11's represent the date of the 22 Bahman (11th month in the Persian calendar) which is the starting date of the Islamic Republic in Iran (It was in 1979). So the text is simple to read, has an interesting meaning and is visually very nice with this broderie-looking effect
this video got me into vexillology
very cool and thanks a lot!
Loved the video! Maybe you could expand and continue to analyze more flags? I'd love to see that! Maybe go continent by continent in a series of videos?
Im from the US but i really believe the UK has the best flag in the world. It just looks so badass.
my favorite flag is norway.
i even based my own flag on it.
You used to see the Union Flag and you would run if you weren't British.
George Washington would like to have a word with you
The UK's flag is several flags layered on top of one another. Which is pretty neat in my opinion
I hate to say it, but Third Reich and Slovak Republic are my faves
An exception for rule 4 is Yukon. It has the coat of arms on it and it looks pretty nice.
@10:30 wel thats true, even the Dutch flag has an official version using kobalt blue and a cheapo version using regular blue which is somewhat lighter
In being distinctive: no chad? No monaco/indonesia?

Great video. Very informative and I love to see more. I've actually designed a couple of flags myself and I think they're pretty good. You know a website where people post theirs for display and feedback?
I enjoyed your video! Thank you so much!
But there is something to protect austraian flag. The whole 3/4 is filled with stars (except union jack) and that is quite good. It is still simple. So Canada had to change the flag obviously, but australian is still not bad )
I love the ensigns
The flag of Hawaii breaks the flag in the corner rule, and looks spectacular!
No it does not
Hawaiian flag is gross
Very good video. Although I agree with the general rule of no seals and code of arms I think the Spanish flag is an exception that pulls it off well.
love the maryland flag
I hate it!
It’s amazing!!
The Alabama state flag is a perfect example of a good flag.
My two favourite world flags: Panama and Kenya.
My "house flag" yachting burgee. The blue represents the letter "L" of my last name.

What do you think about the semiotics of flags?
Welcome to fun with flags
All politics aside, the Confederate Battle flag, in its original square form, is a very striking flag.
So...you like California’s flag despite having a very realistic bear but don’t like Mexico’s because it has a realistic eagle?
4:43 as an American that pronunciation of Maryland hurt me lol, personally I say it as "Marilind"
Well I love the Merchant Flag of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The flag of the Late Ottoman Empire also looks good
My favourite game is Flaggle, it's awesome
I think that a good example of an exeption of the lettering rule is the state flag of calarado with its c

I these principes limits us in designing a good flag
I don't agree with every point you make, but I think it's great there's an attempt to make guidelines for making flags; a good starting point for designers
Darion Kormos agreed. I personally do enjoy Navajo flag for example. But I think it really depends on what the flag is used for.
@@kevinvu5432 geez, you're kidding, right? It'd be cool as a drawing but it just doesn't qualify as a flag not only in my mind, but in most vexillolographs and historical meaning of a flag as well
yakie nimkka it's probably because certain flags have different purposes. It's not a bad flag for what they're aiming for.
@@kevinvu5432 that's if we even can call it a flag, and sure, you could say there's no rules to flags, but were do we draw the line, can i call my 97 yr old grandma a flag? If you get what im sayin

I wouldn't qualify the Maryland flag as "gorgeous". Neither would Brady.

Like how the philippines seems ordinary visually but has this weird card game attack mode when you are at war.

20:25 Yeah-- I noticed that they snuck the Polish flag into the American. Very sneaky, Kościuszko.
The colors on the AZ state flag all represent different aspects of Arizona's economy. The star is a copper color because Arizona is known for copper mining (or at least it used to be).

I love the Maryland flag
Definitely the best of the US state flags.
I actually like the Louisiana State flag. Out of all the USA state flags, it is one of the more memorable ones for me. Visually I think it's well balanced too.
Plus, it's a pelican feeding her babies her blood. Pretty hardcore.
Looks like Diemen really have their ducks in a row.
I’ve never understood all the hate the Australian flag gets. To me it’s distinctive (it’s clearly not the uk flag), it’s related to its history (with the union jack, probably the most beautiful flag there is), the union jack integrates into the blue background, which gives it a sort of remote, marine vibe and, the stars also deepen this vibe for me, with the constellation indicating the country’s location and the big star giving it a nice balance. The Australian flag is the only union jack canton flag that is truly a beautiful design and I die on this hill (as for having another country’s flag in your national flag, I would like to remind everyone that all the star and crescent flags have the symbol of the Ottoman Empire on them, despite there being some great crescent flags out there like Algeria)
I agree; the Australia flag is beautiful, distinctive, and pleasing to look at, and the symbolism is meaningful and strong. Much better than the New Zealand flag, which in complete contrast is borderline hard to look at.
4:10 Did they make that in powerpoint or mspaint?

i'm from australia and i agree we have horrible meaning and horrible uniqueness but heres my idea of how to change it so normal ratio orange diaganl stipe in middle in corner purple stripe other corner blue and next to orange is green and the southern cross in the middle. the orange means the land and desert green means the plants and forest the purple means the unique people and animals the blue means we are surounded by water and the southern cross is we are in the south

Is no one gonna tell him that Australia and Canada didn't choose to make this their flag? The british made it after they colonised these places?
The point is about design not attribution.
@@Hertog_von_Berkshire This was like half a year ago lol
Both the Australian and Canadian flags you are referring to were adopted after independence. The British did not make either.
little harsh on australia. The union jack in the canton holds quite alot of historical relevance and symbolism.
I think California’s flag would be so much better if they got rid of the text. I get that it’s meaningful, but I think the Bear is so much cooler
What are your thoughts on the brazilian flag?
I think it's pretty good; it's not among my favourites, but it's among the better national flags. It's also an excellent illustration of the limitations of the five principles of Good Flag, Bad Flag. If you were to apply these principles to Brazil's flag, you'd certainly remove the stars and the lettering, and maybe change the white stripe to yellow or green so as not to exceed three colours. But that would be a pretty generic flag. The stars and lettering in particular give the flag its own unique character.
Wy don't they just call it corner instead of canton, it means the same thing
Found a flag I like: 🇹🇻
For me? its the Ensign flags of the British Empire

You confused me there at the end for a moment. I just wanted to point out that the flag you are showing as "Republic of Benin" existed only for a short period during the Nigerian civil war, and is not the flag of the state that is nowadays called (Republic of) Benin.

I ALSO LIKE FLAGS!!
The Mexican flag is good though...
it is easy to draw, the only problem is that it has the coat of arms.
pretty sure they did that to differentiate from italy.
Carlo honestly wasn’t expecting an answer and I completely forgot I posted this comment.
In actuality the Mexican flag precedes the Italian flag by some decades. I agree that drawing the coat of arms is very tough since eagles are not very easy to draw. It is a powerful symbol but complex and hard to draw if you're a regular kid.
My flag breaks only two rules:
Too many colors
No meaningful symbolism
The welsh flag is sick

A map can be a strong symbol. The flag of the rep. of Cyprus shows the entire Island, while in reality they only control 2/3. The olive branch under it symbolises the peaceful reunion that will come one day.
The same with the flag of Kosovo. By showing the borders of their state, they show the world, that they are a souvereign country and not a serbian province.
Cyprus is Greek it should go with Greece no Union (Omospondia)
Jeff got me here
Tierra del Fuego... what the heeeeell happened to you to think that flag is acceptable. Jesus. The albatross might be acceptable if done right, but when diagonal!? Wtf. And nonsymmetrical!!?!?!
How hard would it be to have a solid white diagonal line with a white square in the middle to represent the body.
Edit: ok apparently everyone thinks this flag is awesome on reddit. Maybe I'm completely wrong here. I think everything else is great, but the nonsymmetrical albatross and crooked lines just don't work for me.
Flags of countries symbolize who is above them . Australia belongs more or less to the UK. If the Stripes are vertical, these ones dominate the horizontal . See Belgium and Germany ... Pure colors without any sign are at the Top. Black is UCC Right and so on.
Signs in Flags symbolize a degrading for a special mission under the used colors.

Can someone please do something about South Yorkshire's flag. It's horrible. The good people of SY deserve better.

hard disagree on the UK ensign flags, the Red Ensign of Canada is gorgeous and the Aussie (and kiwi though they do admittedly get mixed up) flags are distinctive and evocative.

I rewatched this video and reminded why I hit the unlike button. I think your analysis on some of these was way off. The Arizona flag has a copper star for symbolic reasons (copper mining being a big industry) and the flag is really striking especially compared to other US state flag. Also, I think the 'colonial' flags featuring the UK flag in the canton get too much undeserved hate. They reflect historical and cultural links to Great Britain. I think the red ensign is a way better flag than the current maple leaf flag for instance.
You realize that the dislikes (and comments) count as engagement just the same as likes, right? So thanks for helping to drive viewers to my cool video.
Your missing the point on the British flags where the Union Jack sits in the canton! Excellent system of flags from colonial times and really proud of those nations who kept the flags like Australia , New Zealand to demonstrate their historic link. I wish Canada could have. (It is not a flag within a flag!)
i wish more flags were aesthetically pleasing, if im being honest a lot of flags are just plain ugly
