Largely British audiences giving French flags a low rating:
Ah victory!
I went for a 1 on every single flag that has another flag within it. And I'm French so I contributed to that. Ah defeat!
@@yrosan I basically voted low scores for every flag but my own which I scored the highest of course 😂 (Wales 🏴, by the way). I may be a little biased but a dragon is absolutely the best flag. Japanese minimalist aesthetics come into play even with their flag.
@@Nutty151 "minimalist aesthetic" almost everyone in an anime is of a different hair and eye colour and body type.
@@gamingapocalypse7973 I've seen some anime's where all the characters have black hair and black eyes. It's not common though. I see more people IRL wearing bright colored hair and sometimes eyes, probably influenced by anime as well.

I'm more on the fact that the US apparently had the worst flag in North America to me just seems more to do with people's opinions on the US than it does with their flag which is one of the most Iconic and logically symbolic flags on Earth(it literally tells the story of their country).
Canada's by contras is more like a corporate logo (it's basically a Bi colour pretending to be a tri with a maple leaf to represent canada so as to be as least offensive as possible as Quebec would have protested anything else). it's basically Peru with a maple leaf. that's what the OP is saying
exactly lol
(as a canadian) i thoroughly enjoy my flag:). i don’t think it has anything to do w bias, it is just a unique flag that isn’t too complicated. white bg, two red rectangles and a red maple leaf. it is also v recognizable because of its uniqueness. i feel like it does it’s job as a flag well.
i do hate drawing it, tho. had to do that far too many times in school
ughhh drawing it was a PAIN, and I still can't draw it

I love our flag. I'm sure there's bias, but it is instantly recognizable and in general I like flags that are distinct from the usual collection of stars, stripes and moons. I like Lebanon's flag, and the Silver Fern from New Zealand, for the same reasons.
r/place trauma, for whoever witnessed that mess lol
Same, drawing it was the worst but I learned to really like it, as i had to see it every day at school
When the Canadian Maple Lear was first proposed, it was derided by a fair slice of the population as a K-Mart flag. K-Mart was a large department store chain with a reputation for flying colourful but meaningless flags with geometric designs. Changing from the red ensign to the Maple Leaf in 1965 was seen as a slap in the face to the veterans of the Second World War, even though the red ensign design had already been changed in 1957. Also, it took a couple of years to finalize the red shade of the Maple Leaf. The first iterations ranged from rust orange to almost pink.
US: Rectangular

Flag of the USA is not square. It's 16:9.

Hey TLDR, brilliant video. Loved it. Just to clarify: Colombia, the country, is spelled with "O", while other places, such as British Columbia in Canada or the university, are spelled with "U". This is according to sources in English of course such as the Merriam-Webster dictionary or and article in the Washington Post (and so on), and it is probably the result of people being more exposed to the spelling with "U", and therefore assuming that the name of the country is spelled likewise.
Thanks for the amazing videos and sources on info =)

Brazil has what could be a really good flag that's being held back by cramming loads of details and text and whatnot into it. Remove the text and simplify the star field to just the Southern Cross and it would be an excellent flag.
I think the simplicity of the Canadian and Japanese flag makes it so easy to remember, British American and Australian are all so similar in design and colors , if they are not one of the most influential countries of the world it will be so hard to remember them.
british is extremely easy to remember and the american one is copied more than it should be tbh. british is st georges cross on top of st patrick on top of st andrew, representing the patron saints of each of the countries. the Georgian cross on its own is used for countries including england and georgia.
Tell that to r/place
It is not only simple but very easy to recognize and not confuse with another. According to one ranking Canada is the third most recognized flag in the world despite Canada not exactly being one of the most pre eminents countries in the world and its flag not being one of the oldest.

Couldn't agree more. I honestly have no idea what Scotland is doing so high on the list. No hate to them, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't say their flag looks very well designed. A country like Bhutan or the Seychelles would in my opinion have more potential to compete with the Welsh flag, but apparently most other people don't agree. Also think Brazil's flag is quite underrated, but that is a bit off point.
Definitely, I prefer England’s flag over Scotland’s flag too.
Scotlands flag is neat but shouldnt be in the top 10. Wales shouldve been number 1.
From vexillology perspective, Scotland's is better and cleaner looking.
Absolutely! How can any non-dragon flag compete with a dragon containing one? The only competition Wales should face is from Bhutan.

_-A good flag should be simple:_ overly detailed flags such as those with crests can't be recognized at a glance.
_-At the same time, they must be iconic and unique:_ so flags like France's are just uncreative.
_-Thirdly, they cannot be arbitrary:_ every aspect of the flag should be a concious design choice. You can't just pick random colours.
_-Lastly, it should be harmonious:_ as in it should be generally pleasing to the eye.
In my opinion, the best flags are:
-The Union Jack
-The Japanese flag
-The (South) Korean flag
-The Canadian flag.
Those are my guesses.
_Note: I didn't include the American flag because even though it does well on the first three points, it's just kinda galling to look at. Too much contrast and activity._

Look at the welsh flag. This debate is over.
I’m Canadian and was not expecting this result.
Also Canadian and I was expecting a top 10 and possibly top 3 finish, not out of patriotism but because I've read articles written by marketing experts who praise the Maple Leaf's design as highly distinctive, eye-pleasing and memorable. It's super easy to spot in a picture with dozens of over a hundred flags where most of the rest blur into each other, sharing too many elements in common. Even the US flag has several others that resemble it (intentionally in most cases) and stripes are a very common motif. The 1:2:1 ratio of vertical colouration on the Maple Leaf is peculiar enough that the central square is known as a Canadian pale in vexilollogy (the study of flags). Pearson never really planned it as such but he left us a brilliant bit of national branding.
I had expected Nepal's incredibly unique flag to grab the top spot though. Not surprised that South Africa made the top 10 along with us since their current flag was also a flashy departure from a prior more traditional design.

The Japanese are just being modest.
Or they were angry they didn't get the first place.
It's just a dot
Honestly I think it’s a beautiful flag. Understated but iconic.
Honestly I was wondering how the Japanese flag got so highly rated as well. Overall it is a very simplistic design, and while I can understand that some people might enjoy that in a design, no other really simplistic designs broke top 10, so I'm not sure why Japan's in particular made it there.
The only time I can really say that it was *iconic* as such is World War II, unless I'm missing its modern implications.
Either that or it got rated so highly in part because Japan has become somewhat of an 'obsession' country in recent times, and people just want to rate it highly because they're obsessed with Japan aha. That would help explain why Japanese people themselves happen to be the only ones in the world to underrate their own flag!
To think if the "Imperial Japan flag" would still be in use I would have voted that quite high. Not because of the negative background of it. But that makes me wondering if Japanese people feel like there current flag feels to reminiscent to the Imperial one?!
The Norwegian and British flags are the most appealing to the eye imo
Surprised Italy wasn't up there. Those three colours are so distinctive that you can put them in a narrow band, ribbon or text underline and immediately know that a product is Italian.
Where is Nepal?! They have the coolest flag of all.

You misunderstand the data. The people from Luxembourg hate the EU flag whereas people from the Netherlands like the EU flag
There are 2 important things to win this competition
1. The country must be big and recognizable
2. The flag must be (at least) decent
The British flag is a nice looking flag and the fact that it cleverly combines the Northern Irish, Scottish and English flags. There aren't any other flags similar to the Union Jack, it's unique.
And, of course, very recognisable, which is important.
You've inaccurately captured the elements of the Union Jack.
Firstly, there is no Northern Irish flag. Northern Ireland was never a distinct entity before the partition of Ireland in the early 1900s, and accordingly it doesn't have a unique flag (still to this day their only official flag is the entire Union Jack). Also, the Union Jack dates back to the early 1800s, a century earlier than Northern Ireland was partitioned into existence.
Secondly, the Union Jack consists of the flags of the patron saints of the Kingdom of England (which included Wales), the Kingdom of Scotland, and the Kingdom of Ireland, respectively, as they existed at the time of the flag's creation.
The Kingdom of England is represented by the red Cross of St. George which we all know and associate with England.
The Kingdom of Scotland is represented by the saltire of St. Andrew, which is of course the blue x that we all know and associate with Scotland.
However, Ireland is represented by the saltire of St. Patrick, which was neither a flag used to represent Ireland historically nor a flag used historically in relation to St. Patrick. It has been linked with the coat of arms of a family dynasty (Fitzgerald) who had great control in the Irish province (historically Kingdom) of Leinster. It became associated with Ireland in the late 1700s when it was assigned to the Order of St. Patrick, a British order of chivalry established by Anglo-Irish Protestants in Ireland (this was also the first time it was associated with St. Patrick). The Kingdom of Ireland's flag at the time was a gold harp on a blue field, the harp being of historical significance and a well known symbol of Ireland.
The Union Jack's continued use of the saltire of St. Patrick is a bit of an affront to Ireland, although it doesn't really offend or cause much notice. It is a symbol the British chose to associate with Ireland and it's patron saint, only possible due to their colonisation of the island which carries some very bitter history.
While still relevant due to Northern Ireland remaining in the UK, as well as Scotland failing to achieve independence through referendum, one has to wonder what would become of the Union Jack should either of those two things cease to be a reality.
@@brianmathews2926 absolutely none of this proves his first comment was inadequate. Well written though.
@@XXXTENTAClON227 His comment says the Union Jack includes the Northern Irish flag. Such a thing doesn't and has never existed.
@@brianmathews2926 A thing did exist until 1973, it was known as the Ulster Banner.
Congratulations Canada 🥳
The problem with this is that people don't know 90% of the world flags and therefore will have a bias to countries they already know
Lol
I feel like some people voted the country they r from
But that's a good thing, right? You're not voting on the country, you're voting on whether or not you like the flag's looks.
@@thatjeff7550 eh, i honestly think that It all has to go down to the meaning of the flag, not just the design, anybody would make the most crazy flag out there and everybody loving it, but the flag with the Deepest meaning/significance and history will be totally overlooked
@@johnmcfly-zf2xh but in this case it's just for the design so it's ok lol
The fact that Japan underrated itself really says a lot about what the average person thinks of the country
I'm Canadian and I hate to think how the flag I was born under would rate. Red +, Union Jack in the corner -, excessively complex shield in the middle ---. I remember the anger among some Canadians when we changed our flag in 1965.
As a South African, I can officially say that I am content 🇿🇦🇿🇦😌

Heel fijn man! Hoeveel hiervan kan je trouwens begrijpen zonder translate te gebruiken? Afrikaans is grappig.
India, Norway, Ethiopian,Hong Kong, Russia, America, Lanka, best Korea, Canada,
It's Sri Lanka .
I didn't see it mentioned here but I really like the flag of Togo 🇹🇬🇹🇬🇹🇬 It feels like a heavily simplified and more even version of the US flag but with a distinctly African color scheme, as opposed to the one of Liberia. And it uses the golden ratio so it's just very pleasant to look at. 🖤
Very surprised Argentina and Uruguay flags were ranked so low, I love that sun and light blue stripe. Canada is great, as are the flags of my ancestors, Scotland and Norway (all those Nordic flags with the crosses are nice, particularly the Faroe Islands). Really like the blue and gold/yellow of Sweden, EU, and Ukraine as those are my school and state colors (UCLA and California). Also think the Mexican eagle looks fantastic but I'm not a fan of red with green. Don't understand why the French tri-color is rated so low as it's iconic and attractive, as is the Union Jack; love 'em both.
