I am SO glad that you had the Jolly Roger on your top 10. I 100% agree with you. Such a simple design and it immediently lets people know exactly whats coming for them!
I know right? The color palette and the striking symbol are so well designed and cool, too bad if you design anything similar to it its seen as a fascist flag
@@ponraul1221 You are actually not far off. The Confederate flag was based off the flag of Scotland as the women who designed it where of Scottish ancestry. They just gave it American colors and added stars. 👍
The new Nepal flag is, in my opinion, better. Mostly because it is unique in a different way. And that is because there is an actual "mathmatical formula" for drawing it out. So that even if you have never seen it, you could create it simply by following the instructions. Including the symbols on the inside...
Ehm, pretty much every flag has a "formula" which helps you to recreate the flag even if you've never seen it... France? 2:3 proportions, 1/3 blue, 1/3 white and 1/3 red. Repeat for the other countries.
As a Marylander, there's no way we will be changing our flag anytime soon. We are so proud of our flag that most of us have one is some form, whether it be the actual flag or a shirt with the pattern on it. You would make a lot of us mad if it were changed.
This video is great in that I've never though about favourite flags. Some of my favorites: The tri colour of France is superb, though I really like any flag with a triskellion or a 'sun in his glory', though the latter are reaching towards heraldry. Special shout out to the blue ensign, basis of my own flag
4:27 "the unspoken rule of flag design in that it actually doesn't really seem to have any design at all" Good flag, bad flag's 3rd rule to use 2-3 basic colors: ._.
Thank you for saying the Gadsden flag should remain a libertarian symbol. It’s design is so attractive that even people who are against liberty want to co-opt and steal it. It’s really unique in evoking a set of principles so well. Liberty, individualism, and assertiveness.
Yes, the South Korean flag is stunning... that one should have gone in my "runners up". The Sami flag has a really interesting design, but the colours clash somewhat in a way that makes my eyes feel funny looking at it. Same with the Moroccan flag, with the dark green on dark red.
Easily my favourite flag, but the grass always bugged me. I’ve made a simpler version of the flag without the grass. I also removed “Don’t Tread On Me”, which are powerful words I hold dear, but I noticed is easily bastardized by lazy modifications of the such as “Don’t Tread On Us” or “I will tread”. It also attracts simpletons who don’t want to be treaded upon, but will tread on others. Also, the flag is already very recognizable and synonymous with liberty and defiance against tyranny. It’s really best ideological flag. It even beats the striking Nazi flag and visually pretty Rainbow flag. Despite being based upon revolutionary symbolism of an animal 250 years ago, the rattlesnake upon the gold background still endures. Libertarians really scored in adopting the Gadsden Flag, despite its design shortcomings.
@@ponraul1221 It is one of my favorites. One thing about it. The Snake can be sitting on any type of ground ranging from grass to desert sand with Cacti.
@@coleparker That green patch is actually a relatively recent addition not present until at least 1917. I really don't know why it caught on, because it makes the snake look as if it's levitating at a weird angle. It looks much better without it and I haven't discovered any meaningful symbolism from it, which the rest of the flag has.
@@ponraul1221 That I did not know that, thanks for the info. I have a fascination with flags and the histories behind him. One of my first in my collection, as I am Navy Brat, is the first Navy Jack.
I couldn’t believe it when you said that the old Libyan flag was one of your favorites! 😆 Thinking about it, the green flag was both a complete piece of crap, but at the same time an S-tier worthy design.
In my opinion I don’t think St Lucia should be a runner-up it’s a great flag with amazing colours but The Seychelles are definitely in the top 10 but there’s no way any US states can make it on here South Carolina is one of the good ones but not top 10 I think the same about Maryland but this is just my opinion I think you’ve picked fairly good flags.
"or at least he claimed to be" Leave it to a redditor to shoehorn a 'not real socialism's comment in a mention of one of the most faithful implementations of socialism at a national level, simply because Gaddafi was 'controversial'. Other than that a nice video
The reason why I say "or at least he claimed to be" is simply that I know almost nothing about Gaddafi and the political history of Libya under Gaddafi. So: he claimed to be a socialist; I don't know enough to judge whether or not his claim was true.
@@KaneB while the stated goal of socialism "public ownership of the means of production" is somewhat nebulous and hasn't ever really been achieved, Gaddafi actually did quite well for his people (as far as left wing socialists go). Libya had the highest standard of living in Africa iirc. He built the largest irrigation program in the world (which the west, specifically the state department and DOD committed a war crime in destroying, but I doubt youll ever see Mrs Clinton before the Hague), bread was subsidized, taxes on loans were compelled by law to conform to traditional religious usury edicts etc etc. Gaddafi enriched himself, and his country was unlivable by our standards, but that applies to literally every socialist nation at any point in the ideology's history.
The comment section of a vexillology video is not the place where you'll find someone who will even care Plus the very presence of a state makes it state capitalism instead lol learn from the anarchists
The word "Qatar" uses three consonants, none of which are used in English, so it can't really be pronounced in this language, but the way that I pronounced it, like "cutter" or "cudder", is as far as I know considered the closest English approximation. (Though I may well be wrong about that, since I always get pronunciations wrong in my videos.)
Qatar. Maryland. Libya. Morocco. Muscat & Oman. Brunei. Afghanistan. South Carolina. Jolly Roger. Seychelles. Nepal. Gadsden Flag. Northumberland. West Africa.
"Mary-Land" hehe, we usually pronounce it "Mare-a-lind". Sort of our version of "Leicester".
I am SO glad that you had the Jolly Roger on your top 10. I 100% agree with you. Such a simple design and it immediently lets people know exactly whats coming for them!

*Kane: oh wow smashing design*
*Libya:* **changes it to a tricolor and adds a symbol**
*Kane: boring.*
In my opinion, Libya still has a good flag.
Why comments like this keep showing up on RUclips?
Hell yeah! I’m from South Carolina. Glad you like our flag.

The Nazi flag, if you strip it of all its controversy, is a very well designed flag.
You're not wrong, but I really can't ignore all of the controversy.

Same with the modified Confederate battle flag. Sort of a mix between the American flag and the Union Jack.

Nah, it’s actually terrible because it looks nothing lime a German flag, and it’s just the Swastika slapped on a red background

While interesting that is something that is true of most flags and doesn't impact the actual appearance of the flag

Libya: drops green paint on canvas
Vexillology experts: *surprised pikachu face*
The Gadsen flag also derives from a poster made by Ben Franklin, where he depicted the US colonies as a dismembered snake that should "join or die".
You should get the "No Step on Snek" Gadsden flag
Love the bavarian flag also on of the few flags i still think looks good with a coat of arms
This! The Bavarian flag is amazing.
Fun fact the “Moon” on the SC flag is actually a reference to the crescent found on the hats worn by revolutionary SC soldiers.
Libya: now That's what I call striking color
I like how you choose more unique flags instead of those who specifically follows the “rules” of Vexillology. Gotta say, we have similar tastes!
Being a Libertarian from South Carolina, I think you nailed it.
Glad to see the Libyan flag. Hella dope
The Gadsden Flag isnt racist lol. It's just a stay strapped or get clapped flag.
I like how he calls literally nothing but green amazing but an actual design boring lol
I think the Mexican Tricolor with Eagle, Cactus and Snake emblem is a very striking flag.
