My dad had picked me up a slot car set years back from a yard sale. He had a huge box of cars and tracks of his own, (controllers were broke) and I used to test the cars on my track to get em to work. Alot of them were broke, but I remember this yellow porsche one that always worked and was fast.

Mr. "Buzz" Frank Perri and his wife Dolores Perri passed away in May 2021 within 10 days of one another. As reported in the Gothamist on January 16, 2022, Buzz-A-Rama which was opened by Mr. and Mrs. Perri in 1965, in Brooklyn NY, was officially closed January 2022 and the owners' son sold off the remaining slot-car racing inventory. Buzz-A-Rama was New York City's last remaining commercial slot-car racing center. It dated from a time when slot-car racing centers, either stand alone or part of a hobby store, could be found in just about every city in the USA...

I love Slot Car Racing!!! I spent many hundreds of hours at the Miniature Grand Prix in Westvale N.Y. when I was a kid. It was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Mason, and it was the place to be when i was kid growing up back in the 60's and early 70's. And Mrs. Mason ran a tight ship rough housing or swearing wasn't allowed and no one wanted to get barred from the track. I have so many good memories from that place and the people that used to also race there. Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Mason for all of the great lessons and memories you gave all of us that used to come to your track.

First time racing with regular sized cars. I grew up with Life-Like HO tracks. I wanted to go again on my next TX trip but found out they closed :(

I've been around slot car raceways since the late 60s and it's a hard business to make a buck at, the track takes up so much space and sits idle a lot of the time, the hobby shop owners can make a lot more money taking it out and replacing it with a couple racks of toys.

My dad started restoring Aurora Motors HO guage slot cars about 10yrs ago. I'd fix the cars and controllers and he and my siblings would build and revitalize the sets, some to original layouts others to his own imagination. He sold them on ebay, in fact his pikes peak set in supposed to be in one of the museums in Pikes Peak Colorado.

Salt Lake City, where I'll be moving to a year from now, has a slot car place called The Slot Car Shop. I'm into RC too, primarily scale crawlers, but the thing that makes me want to get into the slot cars, is they're not as expensive as 1/10 and larger scale RC cars, and trucks, and the smaller size makes slot cars, and the tools to service them easier to transport. Plus since the car, and the controller get their power from the track, you don't need yo spend a bunch of money on good lipo batteries, and a good lipo charger for them. You can spend a fortune really easy messing with today's RC vehicles..

  • @lestermiller2717

I love racing these 1/24 scale can am race cars super fast. I started learning about these in a friend’s basement back in the early 60’s. I don’t remember who own the shop but someone opened a slot car race center in N.Y. Near Coney Island. I lived four city blocks away from the pier. Once or twice a year we went there to race. I live in south Florida these days. I can’t even find a small hobby store around anymore in Florida. Very sad for sure. I still have my kustom HO scale race track almost done. It is only 10’ long by 4 1/2 to 5’ wide. Having fun making all my buildings out of wood. I’ll never really finish this up. To many ideas. And I’m in the process of kustom building new engines and frames should really make a difference.

people that are close to warren ohio there will be slot car tracks and rc radio control tracks on 50 acres. there is a bar and grill on the property, the food is great and the tracks are very large for 1/5 1/4 scale racing off road and oval, plus we have the slot tracks for nascar and road course and ( drag strip ), a hobby shop will be made also. all in one spot. a drone racing area will be next. if we can not race outdoors we will have the indoor slot tracks. we want to have a race every day of the week in the summer. day and nights! so if you live close to warren ohio, a big and small kid place play station is coming to warren ohio. if we could find cheap go carts for off road we would have that also. we have a large patio and will have flee market and swap meets and car shows and motorcycle events. outdoor tracks are 95% complete and we are making the slot tracks as i type, and they are 70% complete. we would like to have grand opening july 1st

Mail-order killed the hobby shop and the slot car tracks in the early 70s. No hobby store could make a profit renting lanes on a store track. I remember in the mid 60s in Morristown, NJ you got 15 mins for .35 cents. The purpose of the tracks was to sell car kits and it was a crowd draw to sell other stuff in the store. By the early 1970s however the advent of credit cards make it possible for mail order businesses to sell these car kits from warehouses at prices that undercut the hobby stores. Tracks took up way too much floor space to justify them and the hobby folded up in just a few years. This was long before the RC race car hobby took off in the late 1980s. Mail order and then the internet crushed brick and mortar hobby stores by the late 90s. What still exist are poor specimens compared to the great stores of the 1960s. Polks in NYC was the best example. Seven floors. "112 steps from the Empire State Building," read their ads. Polks suffered a long death during the 80s and 90s until the owners realized that the property was worth 10s of millions and sold out. Slot car tracks have made a bit of a comeback in the 2000s as retiring Boomers had the time and $ to support clubs, but the new versions have such technical "improvements" to allow the cars to go at blurring speed--- too fast for me to find much enjoyment in the hobby.
