  • Jerry Sloan was selected fourth in the 1965 NBA draft by the Baltimore Bullets. The Chicago Bulls, an expansion team, selected Sloan in the 1966 NBA expansion draft. He became known as "the Original Bull", known for his tenacious defense, leading them to the playoffs in their first season, and to their first and only division title before the Michael Jordan era; after a series of knee injuries, he retired in 1976. He averaged more than 18 points a game in 1970-71, and over 15 points per game three other seasons. Despite his height of only 6 ft 5 in (1.96 m), his career rebounding average was 7.4 rebounds per game, with one season having an average of 9.1 rebounds. He was a career 72 percent free throw shooter. His number 4 jersey was subsequently retired by the Chicago Bulls in 1978, becoming the first retired jersey in franchise history.

One of toughest players ever in the history of the NBA at the 2 guard position was Jerry Sloan, a 6'6" guard (shoes on like rookies were measured from '73 on). "Spider" was a hard nosed defender and rebounder that was capable of scoring the rock with his jumper but it was his excellent defense, the willingness to do the dirty work, and excellent rebounding for guard that was his calling card.
In the early '70s the "Original Bull" was putting up 18 points a game, close to 9 rebounds, and was playing hard nosed defense night in and night. "Charley Hustle" was more than willing to sacrifice his body for the good of the team and that took the form of taking charges against aggressive opponents, mixing it up inside to get rebounds against much bigger and taller front line players, and diving for loose balls on 50/50 balls. It always seemed Jerry Sloan had an assortment of strawberries or a thigh pad, knee brace, or some sort of tape on his body.
To say that Sloan was tenacious was an understatement so it was no surprise that Charley Hustle was named to the NBA's all defensive team 6 times. Jerry's Bulls teammates knew they could count on Jerry to work hard and hustle night and night out and inspired them to do the same. Jerry Sloan knew he had to bring something extra if he was going to succeed against more talented players so he gave 100% every night. Jerry Sloan was the type of player you hated to play against but loved to play with.

Sadly no. Not every teams played like that back then... and not every team played like the Brooklyn Nets.
Schemes are more complex than that.

Bulls were my first favorite team and a real team of castoffs like Love, Weiss, Sloan- not bad players but no one thought that they would be key players on a team within a whisper of the championship. Rick Barry career year (and Wilkes ) sadly ended thier window

We all know that Jerry Sloan was already in the Hall of Fame as a coach, but in my humble opinion, he should be also as a player because he’s a very hardworking player especially on defense and rebounding despite he’s in the guard position. I’m surprised that he’s in the NBA All-Defensive Team six times which is on the same total as Hall of Fame player Dave DeBusschere. I hope that someday he’s in the Hall of Fame as a player. If he’s in, he will joined other Hall of Famers on those both categories by the likes of Bill Russell, Lenny Wilkens, Tom Heinsohn, John Wooden, and Bill Sharman. Another one is if Bobby Jones was already in the Hall, Jerry Sloan should be also in the Hall as a player.

Earlier in Jerry Sloan's career the all defensive teams didn't exist so he could possibly have 8 all defensive teams if it existed his whole career
