GOAT. Greatest of all times. Wish I could go back to those days. I saw Dr's last game in McNichols Arena in Denver. Believe it was Dec 30, 1986. Don't even remember who won. I just know that I got to see my boyhood idol play ball in person. 😊
Thank you Julius Erving. first time I saw you play was in a preseason game in Portland Memorial Coliseum against the trailblazers and the Blazers beat the 76ers by like 50 points and I knew the Blazers were going to be a good team! I was right because we met you guys in the finals and the blazers winning it all was one of the best few weeks of my life as an 18-year-old kid. Now what matters most is my relationship with God and saving America in the world from evil.
There was a life-sized printout of Dr. J's hand at my muddle schools library, and I remember thinking his fingernails were the size of golf balls. Straight up catcher's mitts.
He is the original small forward GOAT. (Note: The own Dr. J said that Elgin Baylor was first.) He was the best in the ABA and the NBA. He was the first player to really walk in the air. He did not invented the dunk but he made them a work of art. The first small forward to dunk from the freethrow line. He created his own style. He used Converse shoes... not Nike's. Apparently the new generation of basketball analysts think that basketball started in 1990 because they almost never speak of the great Dr. J. For me he is the BEST.
Telling this right now matter fact he like mj didn't get his game from doc.j I was like mj idol was doc j freethrow like dunk flying and hanging in air switching hand mid air cradle the dunk all doc that mj used
@@N8sGames I am talking about small forwards... Wilt was a center. But yes, generally speaking, Wilt and Russell (the other great center of that era) were GOATS before Dr. J. (I already edited my original comment to avoid confusion again. Thank you. 🙂)
There's a lot of memorable things about "The Doctor." When he first came into the pros back in 1971-72 season, he choose to wear a pair of white hi-tops "Chucks" Converse All-Stars. Simple, but EFFECTIVE!! "The Doctor" always willing to make "house-calls"......😊😊
I used to wear Maroon Vans when I played in school that matched out maroon/gold uniforms lol Idk if it’s because I have such a strong arch in my feet, but something about a flat lightweight shoe that helped me run faster and jump higher. They weren’t the authentic vans, they were the old school mode. I still play in vans at my local YMCA/city park when I don’t feel like going home to grab my pink Damian Lillard’s lol
People remember the dunks but Doc does not get enough credit for being a great defender. Notice how well Erving used the backboard. Almost like Tim Duncan.
Exactly Im trying to find his real highlights not the dunks and layups we seen 1000 times its literally impossible to find real highlights of his full offensive game😢
I wasn't born OR alive when Dr J was playing in the NBA, because I'm a millennial. I'm very impressed by his game in those times. I discovered about Dr J last year and fell upon this video. I can see how Michael Jordan was influence by Dr J. A lot of the Moves Jordan does is similar to Dr J, and other players as well.
THAT buzzer beater at 1:06 Is like a miracle, that IS BASKETBALL! It's like when I doubt God, that is modern day Jesus! It is like a "leap of faith" shot & he is so IN TUNE IT MAKES IT!
Growing up, my Dad said that if I want to be successful in life, to pattern it after Dr J. I did, still do. He may be no Jordan. But as a person, Jordan couldnt hold Dr J's jock. His influence in the NBA is still evident today
My favorite is the dunk over Bill Walton in the finals it was like he was tied to a space rocket 😂 Micheal Cooper dunk was the one I saw as a kid it was so amazing because coop almost hit his head on the backboard it just showed how great that dunk was
Didn’t know he had done the Mark Landesberger sweep-de-do any other times. I had never seen the one against the Bucks. That one might have been harder than the one against the Lakers.
It’s crazy how if you were this good prior to like 1985 you aren’t even talked about Mike Schmidt same way It’s not enough people talking about these 2
I saw a silhouette of Dr. J's hand, now I don't know if my hand grew since age 17, but the top of my hand came to the point of his hand, where the fingers start, and people say I have pretty big hands

No question Dr was a great player and looked smooth when he took off for a layup or dunk, but he dribbled the ball like a 7fter. His jumpshot didn't look that great either.
That rock da cradle dunk is the most famous highlight dunk ever.
Probably the free throw line one from mj is more famous but Irving flew out the gym
Why did 21 jump?? 😂
And it happened to be against my Lakers lol 😮😅
Thanks to Jordan
@@shevincoe even the Lakers loved that dunk as it happened
They don’t talk about him enough
because he was too much for words... but i agree with you fam.

One of the true greats that lead the ABA into the NBA.
Rock the cradle dunk. Priceless
Yeah, I'm a little too young to have watch this man play but legend. I also see how he influenced a young Michael Jordan.
Definitely. MJ has said the Doc was his idol
All that ball palm stuff that Jordan loved doing was dr j style
The Doc brought the excitement to the game.
I grew up across the bridge from Philly in South Jersey. I had the big fro’ too. Doc was the man!

Dr. J made dunking a basketball mainstream. He made it cool to dunk the ball. He was a great player who doesn't get talked about nearly enough.

He doesn't get enough credit in general. Maybe if he hadn't played a lot of his best years in the ABA, he would be viewed differently
@@JJ_5289I think about that.
Because he was most certainly not a good defender lol
@@maxdurk4624 He was a top 15 ever defender based on the stats. Doc averaged two blocks and two steals per game his whole career.

Smooth, effortless
His Rock the Cradle Slam is the Best of all 🏀🏀My Idol and Friend Thanks Julius "DR.J" Erving
Dr. J has a unique way of jumping. I never seen a player jump straight up without any horizontal momentum. It looks like an astronaut on the moon.
Man, Doc running up and down the court, flying through the air with his fro blowing backwards, was the best $hit EVER!!!!
Before Jordan we had Dr J
People don’t know
Stellar performance.
What a player. Special NBA time, not sure what it is today. A lot of Washington Generals teams. Most teams are scoring 146 or better

Smoooooth
Respect for the Dr. swooped and hooped.
Dr j has massive hands, same size like Jordan, when you can palm the ball with one hand and maneuver it in the air it's very difficulty to guard
Shaq’s podcast with Dc Young fly bought me here
Me too!
Top 15 All-time Legend 😤
All Time Great athlete, in the Dominique Wilkins mold. Only cared about offense, but he did get a ring.
These are grown ass men on the court here boys and girls. Definitely not for the faint at heart.
For 50 years I love the 76ers.
