@@funmidash3590 Osteo arthritis is cruel. Try cut sugar out of your food you eat. Enjoys variety of healthy foods nuts, fruits/berries, veggies, meat, fish, eggs, grains & try to contol weight, even losing few kilos will help. Mind over matter piwerful be determined to not just sit do nothing all day. It does take effort but will pay off if can walk 20 - 30 mins a day, even eventually twice a day. Start off stretching for few mins before going for exercising. I love going for walks, swimming, bike rides. It is a vicious cycle with OA. Make sure check with GP first. It maybe painful to move, but must as if don't will get worse I'm afraid. Glucosemine with condroitin in tablet/powder form I have found quite good, also magnesium with turmeric. Also be kind to yourself, try to relax & not stress out. Pace yourself. All best 🤗❤

You asked what worked for me; stem cells from my hip. It worked for 5.5 years with a PRP injection at 3 1/5 years. That equaled $5.90/day with no insurance, and little risk, no pain of surgery, little risk of infection or blood clots. I was very happy with the results. I've just had the treatment done again at the 5.5-year point as swelling and some discomfort had begun. I could still do lunges and get up from the floor with no support but I did not want to wait to begin treatment until I was in pain again. I also was able to stop taking NSAIDs. If I relate my experience to any physician including my doctor I get absolutely no response.
I really enjoy "Talking with Docs" Exceptionally well done, informative, and fun, thanks!

Solanine is a toxin I and many of my family members are sensitive to. My mother for years had majorly swollen ankles that were purple in color. She had broken one ankle when she was 30, but both were painful. She was talking 36 aspirin a day, walking with a heavy limping gait, and going to bed each night in tears. My mother discovered through a book that some medical issues may be food allergy related. So she went on a two day water fast then started incorporating one food at a time back into her diet per meal and keeping a record. She ate potatoes and then 30 minutes later could not walk. After removing all nightshades from her diet (potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers - and tobacco, but she kept smoking), after a couple month, the swelling had majorly reduced, the color of her ankles improved, she no longer needed aspirin to function, didn't go in bed in pain anymore and walked better than she had for the past 10 years and ditched the cane. The doctor who was suggesting surgery for her ankles scoffed at her able to heal herself through diet change and was angry. But the proof was in the pudding. And now that I have gotten older, the same sensitivity has developed. If I accidentally eat something with green pepper/chili or eggplant, 30 minutes later, my knee starts to hurt - one Filipino restaurant did not list putting eggplant into the stew and only half way through did I realize it had it - and 30 minutes later, the pain hit. Solanine is a toxin that nightshades produce to deter animals from eating the fruit before it is ripe. As the fruit ripens, the solanine levels reduce. The items with the highest solanine levels are tomatoes picked green in the field, potato skins, green peppers, green chilis, & eggplant. Chilis fully ripened on the plant, like red chili pepper have very low solanine levels I can eat items with red chili pepper and feel very little affect at all. Once or twice a year, I will let myself have fries (peeled, no skin!) and my knees that night will be a little stiff, but no pain. But I have adjusted my diet and if I have pizza, it will have a pesto base, or I will have pesto or alfredo on pasta. It's worth it to avoid the pain.

Great video and information! I tore a meniscus in one knee when I was 58 and was told by my surgeon I would need to have both knees replaced within the next 5 years due to arthritis. Even though I experienced pain daily in both knees and took advilpm every night to sleep I wanted to hold off on surgery and explore alternatives. Long story short, I dropped 30 lbs, started going to the gym to do leg exercises on the machines (nothing heavy duty) just strengthening. I also play pickelball for exercise and I think another big factor is I now take collagen in powder form, 20g, per serving in my coffee twice a day. It took about a year but I no longer have ANY pain in my knees and take no meds at all. I'm now 66 and hopefully kicked that knee surgery can way down the road. I'm hoping my experience may, in some way, help others looking for possible options.

I cut all alcohol, all grains, and all the sugar that I could from my diet and it made a huge difference. I can lift weights and play basketball again. I'll still likely need a replacement surgery at some point but that dietary change may allow me to limit it to a single surgery in 10 - 15 years (I'm hoping).

Great of you two to revisit this topic!
Also great advice for self help of our tired old arthritic knees!
I had a scope of one knee (somewhere between 1992-2000). I seem to have gotten some relief at the time but it's back to popping, creeking and aching!
I've tried many OTC meds with little relief.
And now the other knee is in the same shape. I despise ice anywhere on my body as therapeutic treatment.
The meniscus is torn on each knee and I have no desire to have surgery. Granted, the first surgery was just a scope but any future surgery would be more intense and invasive.
If you two were my doctors, I probably wouldn't be so hesitant for an evaluation.
But I've had back surgery and then neck surgery within the past 3 years. I'm not in a wheelchair but I use a cane (for balance from back problems).
I'm currently taking an OTC for my back and I think it helps a little for my knees too.
My biggest challenge is going up and down stairs. Going down the stairs actually hurts more.
Once when I was having post-op physical therapy, I was walking to the pool with the physical therapist and he was watching the way I walked. Obviously I walk slow and he made a comment. I told him my walking (and not being able to run) was only detrimental if I was being chased by Godzilla as I was sure to be the first one to get squashed! He actually did a spit-take since he wasn't expecting that answer.😋
So no, I don't worry about running for several reasons. And walking with a cane somewhat henders any chance of running. If Godzilla were to arrive in Texas, considering how slow I walk, a whole lot of people would be able to get ahead by the time Godzilla reached me.
I'm familiar with food that aggravates arthritis and try wholeheartedly to avoid it because I can actually tell a difference when I eat it.
My PCP has me tested regularly for any damage to any organs because of certain medications.
I'm retired now and don't feel the need to speed up my walking (unless you know who shows up). If my knees start hurting, I'll sit and rest a while.
I truly appreciate your information and frequent reminders for taking care of our bodies! I do what I can to keep moving and take care of myself, eat responsibly, avoid alcohol, etc etc but I'm not Forrest Gump so I won't be running across the states!😂
11 years!?! I've only known about the past 8. You've caught on because of your great information and wonderful sense of humor!👍
Thanks for sharing another great video!😁

I developed severe arthritis in my left knee following a meniscus tear. Doctor did a steroid injection, which didn't help my arthritis but my lymphedema flaired. I was to the point I could barely walk. I decided to try supplements with chondroitin, glucosamine, MSM, collagen, and hyaluronic acid. Most days I'm pain free or nearly. I was already on a prescription NSAID for other arthritis. Placebo effect or not, I'm just happy to be able to walk!

My husband had a knee replacement last fall. What did not become evident even with all the preliminary tests and prep was that he had a blocked femoral artery. He had excellent peripheral circulation until the surgery which caused swelling blocking blood flow to the lower leg and foot. This caused anterior compartment compression syndrome. The anterior of his lower leg had terrible pain. Finally huge blisters erupted then a massive wound opened with much necrosis. He needed a total of six surgeries, two vascular surgeries, and several debridments. Finally he had a graft surgery which is now healing in. He wore a wound pump for weeks and we did long periods of dressing changes. He will have foot drop and will need a special orthotic. This was a highly unusual situation, but was awful. Joy

I had sudden bouts of massive pain when I was out walking and gas trouble getting home. I completed the GLAD program and have built some of the exercises into my daily routine. I am 80 and now walk 2-3 hours a day on hilly terrain, garden, and generally goof around with seldom any pain at all.

68 years old here. I played basketball until I was 62. My knees hurt most of my adult life. But they felt the best the day after I played. I am also a widebody. I just recently completed a 3 injection over three weeks course of hyaluronic acid shots to the knees. My doctor said I was an ideal candidate because my cartilage isn't completely gone. So far, my knees feel the best they have for years. I walk three miles a day 20 out of 21 days on average but used to run a lot. My doctor said he recommended not running any more but about a week ago I jogged about 50 yards of each lap for 4 laps. Finished the mile in a little over 16 minutes. My knees have still felt good for the week since then. It is hard to resist running again.

You guys are amazing and I am very grateful to you I just had lateral and medial repair surgery on my knee, I went in completely blind, my surgeon said I would be back riding my bike in 2 weeks. I am 69 and still in pain. I am an ultrarunner running 100 miles races and so not a sedentary person at all. The thing I was most upset about was I was never told to get PT, my surgeon didn't recommend it or set it up and so after 4 weeks I paid out of pocket until my insurance kicked in. By this time my scar tissue seemed to be frozen and it was a terribly painful procedure to start PT. I am now about 15 weeks into healing and am still in pain and have a very stiff knee. I am back out running but not sure whether I will ever be the same. I am just terribly disappointed with the after care procedure and I know you say you are in charge of your own healing but what if you don't really know never having been injured before. I was never told by my surgeon what I would need to make sure I did. Thank you again.

Great video. I'm south of your border by a little bit. 3+ arthritis in one knee with virtually no cartilage left and the lateral meniscus is completely detached. Also had a tibial plateau fracture in that knee in 2012. Have been using orthotics for almost 20 years and they definitely helped. Then I retired and decided to ski 100 days in the 21/22 ski season. Am on my 3rd 6-month injection of MonoVisc (hyaluronic acid) in conjunction with an unloader brace and I have no pain. The brace is a bit of a PITA but it's improved my life so I am religious about using it. BTW I'm 6', 180 lbs so I feel like my weight is about right. Cutting way back on beer consumption also helped.

Love you guys. I said a long time ago that I would post how you saved my knee replacement. I got it 8 months ago. It seems the surgeon was good and surgery was without problem. The follow up however, was terrible. When I went home from the hospital they hadn't arranged the home therapy and it was more than a week after before it started. Luckily, you had a video with a therapist showing the exercises to do after knee replacement and I followed that on my own. In the early weeks you answered some of my questions here in the comments faster than I could get a response from the doctors office where I had the surgery done. I live in the US where we think we have the best medical in the world.I'm not so sure about that. Otherwise at 8 months I'm doing pretty well. walk without a limp now, knee doesn't bend as far as originally, so I have to open the car door all the way to get out. Other knee is starting to flare up, Xrays said both knees are bone on bone . I just had injection of gel and cortisone. Than you

I am 64 and cannot walk anymore without some pain in both knees. This is ridiculous. I have had both knees X-rayed and there appears to be some cartilage degeneration in the middle of my knees. I've had two steroid injections in both knees so far that have helped, thankfully. I would love to hear more from doctors about other kinds of injections such as PRP to help an arthritis sufferer avoid surgery.

The one thing that has helped my severe knee arthritis most is topical diclofenac. I was skeptical when it was prescribed -- said to myself, with a sneer, "that's joint cream". But since I could walk maybe a block before howling in pain, I was willing to try it. The effect was clear within two weeks. It is over the counter in many countries, including, now, the US, but if you can get a generic by prescription, the copay will likely be less than the over the counter price.

Sometimes I'd wake up in the middle of the night with my aching knee and once I put on my brace, I was able to get back to sleep. My doc recommended a longer acting steroid (Zilretta): for the first 8 weeks it was amazing. The pain was gone. But, week 9 I was feeling some strong side effects. So, I knew that wouldn't work for me. There is a definite loss felt. I know I can't garden like I used to.. On my knees with hands in the dirt. So, I plant in planters each summer and have my husband put in a new perennial once in awhile. Soon I will be walking without pain!

Have done a couple rounds of pt in the past.
Recently it has been flared, and a couple weeks ago it gave out on me while at work.

Thanks MrsB. I didn't quite understand the OTC part; are we supposed take Tylenol and Advil but be careful or not to take at all? I wish they had named some prescription anti inflammatory meds that don't have the same risk factors. I got a diagnosis of severe arthritis in both knees ( I built up from mild, moderate then severe) about 7 yrs ago. I know I'm bone on bone now. I am taking a long acting opioid that is useless. So I'm left taking Tylenol and Advil 3 times a day but it worries me to take that much. I started taking it once a day, then twice, and it's only been 2 weeks since I went on 3 x daily. Do I need to worry? Does anyone have other suggestions other than the Tylenol/Advil combo? Naproxen doesn't seem to help me.

I really love your channel and the solid advice you are giving out. I am 73 years old and do not drink smoke or take drugs. The results are so far zero aches pains and I walk a lot...learned to do this after living in the Mediterranean for years. Regarding diet..yes I could lose 25 lbs. And am working on it.
So many of my friends are suffering and having these operations and in many cases I think it's alcohol related. A couple of drinks during the week no problem but a few drinks every night is way too much.
I agree with you about surgery...stay away and use natural ways of healing. ICE is a miracle worker!!
In my family!y it does not matter what we do we have a genetic problem regarding Diabetes 2 and all of us have it and do our best to work with it. So far AOK. All the advice you just gave on this Video is for diabetics too.

You have no sponsors because you two are good doctors, the kind that pharmaceutical companies don't want. Keep the good work guys 👍

Thanks docs - I know for me a Turmeric/Ginger/Pepper supplement and new shoes have done amazing things. It took a while for the Turmeric to kick in -- around two weeks. The new shoes were just me being cheap and not realizing that my soles had worn down weird.
