Worth mentioning that both Towa Tei and Cornelius were heavily influenced, and later worked/performed with the legendary synthpop trio Yellow Magic Orchestra.
I want more! Suitcase Rhodes...Strawberry Machine...Nagisa Cosmetic...Pine AM...Coltemonikha....Supercar. This genre is crying out for a definitive deep dive and this channel has the taste and the skills to really do it justice. 🤖
@@radioclash84 I haven't heard anything since 2008 album "Girlfriend"🤷♂️.......I really like her song Twinkle of the Stars. The Aprils song "Kirameki moon diver" is really good too. キ・ラ・メ・キ・ムーンダイバー edit added katakana song title because it's hard to locate that song on youtube without.
I was in Japan in the late '90s and it was just an orgy of amazing Shibuya-kei inspired artists: Fantastic Plastic Machine, Akakage, Captain Funk, Takako Minekawa, Kahimi Karie, Mansfield - every week it seemed some glorious new pastiche would be released. The late '90s really was the peak of the alternative/club music scene in Japan.
Shibuya-kei seemed like the first time that Japanese music was truly in conversation with western music, as Pizzicato Five, Kahimi Karie, Cornelius, Buffalo Daughter and more had records coming out abroad on big labels like Matador and Grand Royal. Additionally, the stuff they were doing wasn't so different from the pastiche-pop that Beck, The Beastie Boys and April March were doing too. Portraying their role in global music as solely sponges or mirrors leaves out how vital they were to both contemporary trends and future trends in global music.
I loved this video! Shibuya-kei is currently my main musical obsession. It would be awesome if you could explore more recent bands and styles they are experimenting with.
I think in a way, Shibuya-kei brought the sort of artistic sensibility and musical palette that was quite analogous to the American art rock/pop musical duo Sparks. They were founded in 1971 and, surprisingly, are still releasing new materials to this day while still keeping a relatively consistent sound. I think you may be interested in digging the group's catalog (..if you haven't) 😉
I got into it after seeing pizzicato 5 on a comedy central show viva variety in 1998 (I'm old now). There used to be a mailing list called babymeat with file sharing server and a bunch of us would share music. Some of the stuff you could import from used CD stores in Japan at reasonable prices too. It was a fun time pre-streaming.
Great video! Would have loved to hear more about the later stages of Shibuya-kei / the 2nd wave (whatever you wanna refer to it as) in the early to mid 2000s, with some of my favorite groups as you mentioned like Serani Poji and capsule, as well as Plus-Tech Squeeze Box and SCP (the latter 2 of which were very relevant to the beginning of Picopop as I've heard it called, although I can't speak to how historical of a genre that is lol.) Also if you are interested in more content on this stuff maybe you could do a video on the Guitar Pop / Indie sound of groups like Advantage Lucy (another fav of mine) that was developing around the same time Will be checking out more content in the future!
The late 70s/early 80s bands Plastics as well as Yellow Magic Orchestra were huge influences on Shibuya-Kei. You cannot talk about this scene without mentioning Takako Minekawa - she practically invented "indie bedroom pop" as well as Kahimi Karie. I would also include the more indie-rock influenced side including bands such as Judy and Mary and Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her. One European band heavily influenced by this scene, and they covered a lot of Shibuya-Kei songs was the German/French duo Stereo Total.
Great video. It's also worth mentioning that the early '90s band the Nelories were tied to the Shibuya-kei movement. Their debut album is classic, though it errs more toward a jangle-pop sound ala the Pastels.
My jam. I loveeee fantastic plastic machine and was into pizzicato 5 for a bit. I’m sure that once I listen to them again my love will reignite. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
huh.. so that's the genre of music I've been saving these past few years... literally listened 4 - 5 of these bands before, not including the ones I've seen in passing
Absolutely would love to see more videos on Shibuya-Kei, it's been a genre I've adored for years at this point Would personally highly recommend touching on the Katamari franchise, since I feel in many ways it's a game series which introduces a lot of people to Shibuya-Kei without even knowing that's what they're listening to and has even featured groups and singers who are famous in the genre.
Sera I Poji is one of my favorite bands, and this is the only place I have ever heard them mentioned! I found them while bumbling around online in the early 00’s. They had contributed some music to a Sega game that I forget the name of. I fell in love with the song and went on a decades long mission to find every album. They are so cute and fun!

The anime series Detroit Metal City was about a wannabe Shibuya Kei singer who accidently becomes a famous Heavy Metal singer....it was a big hit in Japan and even spawned a (not as funny) live action version.
Whatever Japanese sub-genre (J - Shoegaze ?) these albums fall into please do a video on that ... 1. Mash - Sparkle (2005) 2. Walrus - 光のカケラ Hikari no Kakera (2000) ... 3. The Novembers - Zeitgeist (2013) etc
Keitaro Takanami, from Pizzicato Five, wrote the soundtrack for the classic sci-fi romcom anime Chobits. Here's the opening theme song: ruclips.net/video/O97zLf3OjUk/видео.html
That song was actually written by Katsutoshi Kitagawa and his band Round Table featuring Nino, not Keitaro Takanami. Though to be fair, Round Table IS another shibuya-kei outfit emerging from the late 90s and became one of the major representations of the so-called Akishibu-kei sound, a blend of anime songs and Shibuya-kei very prevalent during the 2000s. They made songs for Welcome to the NHK, ARIA, and of course Chobits.
Lamp and Kirinji are not Shibuya-kei from the Japanese point of view, and they themselves have clearly distanced themselves from Shibuya-kei in the first place, but I feel uncomfortable that they are lumped in with Shibuya-kei outside of Japan. When did this misunderstanding arise?

It translates to shibuya style
