What a cool and helpful video! Thanks for doing it so well!
Yes, I have been very disappointed by the recordings when I just put my phone on the piano (although the mic on my new iPhone 11 Pro Max does sound much better than my older phones).
I never thought about putting my phone a short distance away. I just assumed the recording would be worse, not better. But not so!
In your demonstration, I couldn’t tell much difference between the Earbuds and the Lapel. I think those were my favorites.

Great technical demo, Sangah. Really well put together and the comparisons where you flicked between inputs was very informative. I thought it might be useful to explain the effect of mic distance. It sets the balance between the sound recorded directly from the piano and reflections from the walls, floor and ceiling of the room. The sound pressure level follows an inverse square law, so as you move closer to the piano the direct sound gets dramatically more prominent in the mix compared to the natural reverb. If you have a lot of hard surfaces you'll want to keep that reverb under control.
Of course, once you're _inside_ the piano, there are also reflections from the soundboard, case and lid, as well as the direct sound from the strings. Some engineers strap a piezoelectric microphone right onto the soundboard, as well as stereo condenser mics for the strings. Once you get a clear sound in your particular environment, the mix you choose is a matter of taste. Too much reverb can sound cold as well as mushy. A well-defined warm sound is generally achieved by placing mics one to three feet from the strings. (All in my humble and completely amateur experience).

Thanks for that info. I'm in my second year of piano lessons as an adult beginner and so far I've been using the iPad and it's internal microphone ... not so hot. Recently, I purchased a GoPro Hero 4 camera and a Sennheiser MKE 2 elements waterproof microphone for my sailing videos but I plan to try this microphone for my piano lessons. Singer and pianist Aimee Nolte actually used this setup to record some jazz vocals while she was surfing and posted a video on RUclips about it! She really likes the microphone and sometimes uses it when she hasn't got her full recording setup with her. You don't have to use the video ... easy to rip the sound track if that's all you want. Many thanks for your wonderful music ... I'm really glad I discovered your channel.
