My old Roland ua-25ex interface died on me and I picked up the Focusrite scarlett 4i4. Very happy with it. I run my midi cables from my Korg M50 into the 4i4 and my Shure sm-58 (probably around 40 years old!) into the mic input on the 4i4. I'm using Cakewalk by Bandlab as my DAW. Still pinching myself that this software is free. The equivalent of Sonar platinum which was $499. Really enjoy your videos. Very instructive and I like how your explanations are kept simple and concise. Thumbs up!
Hi, I could use some help, I'm new to recording. I have a midi controller that I want to connect to an audio inteface using the midi IN/OUT. Do I need to buy two midi cables to plug both midi IN and OUT from the controller to the interface or just one cable from the controller to the audio interface. Thanks in advance!
If you only want to use the controller to drive virtual instruments in your software you only need one cable (from out of keyboard to in of interface). If you want to capture MIDI tracks in DAW, edit and then play back through controller (assuming it has onboard sounds) you'd need two. It sounds as if you want to use it as a controller so I'm guessing one will do
Thank you!! Finally. I've watched more than 20 videos about different interfaces, and you are the only one who actually covered the inputs and connections, and explained how to connect a microphone, as well as the method to connect Mono and Stereo inputs. I learned I need a 4i4 interface. Thanks again!
i have a digital piano and i just bought a mic, i didn't know i needed it all that stuff 😂 i just wanted to play and sing 🤣🤣 so thank you for this info, really helpful.
If you check out the Samson G-Track Pro mic, it's a USB mic with a built in audio interface to accept a 1/4" jack on the back and it allows you to record your voice and an instrument through the same mic through either 2 Track or Mono.
Dear Teacher!: You made my Day, thank you very much. I’m so glad to have stumbled across your channel (I’m in the process of learning) Once again I express my gratitude
These are the kinds of videos I have been searching and searching for. Finally, when I stop looking, you pop up. I am so glad Your videos found me lol Very helpful. Thank you!
Excellent video! I just referred one of my subscribers to this video as she was asking how to record both vocals and piano at the same time. I have a video that shows people how to record their Nord keyboard with Focusrite and Garageband so I get a lot of questions from that video. Your video here really helped here thanks!

Hi, I'm so appreciating all of your videos (I've been watching for a few hours for a couple of day) but still not getting my system to work. I've learned a lot though! LOL Here's my set up and what I'm trying to do. Getting tired and weary trying to figure it out. Trying to get set up to teach only through Manycam and Zoom. I don't want to record anything other than a video promo for my classes, which I don't need a DAW for. I have a Focuslite Scarlett Solo. Downloaded the Focuslite control panel with driver (uninstalled it and did it again even to make sure it worked!) Also, downloaded CakeWalk just because I thought having a DAW might make this all work. I have my mic plugged in with the 48v button on. It's working just fine with the gain light. I have a Yamaha P-125. It has a gray USB plug that goes to the back that I learned was the MIDI cord (from you) and is also supposed to be the audio as well, I heard you say on another video. I have the Focusrite plugged into my computer and the gray Yamaha cord plugged into a hub. I tried plugging both into the computer and still nothing so I don't think it's a hub issue since everything else works on the hub. I choose Input as the Focusrite and Output as the Focusrite on both my computer and Manycam. In the FR controller I have it set to "air" and "line" (there is "instrument" but it didn't work either). If I click on the tab that says, "Output routing" it says, "Output routing is not supported on this device. I'm 6 hours in on trying to figure this out. LOL I've been running Manycam and zoom for over 3 years now so good there. Just can't hear the keyboard other than what the mic pics up. grrrrrrrrrrrr Question is, do I need the stereo lines with the MIDI cord to make it work? I have to buy them but before I do I thought I'd ask. I REALLLY want to throw in the towel but can't! HELP! Please!!! 🤣✌💕
God bless you, God bless you.. and oh yeah , God bless you!!! Finally a video that just gets straight to the point and explains the simplicity of it all!!! You’re amazing!!! Thanks again!!!
Awesome explanation. What about the FL studio, is the same principle applies. Lastly, What's the name of the software you are using. Please need more information.
You're putting out some great videos!!! I just stumbled onto your channel and it's just what I'm looking for. I've had my recording equipment for quite some time but never really devoted any time to using it. So you would be right if you called me a "newb". Your explanations are simple and very easy to follow. I had one disappointment when watching this video... I was waiting for you to sing when recording the vocal track!!! 🙂 Thanks again... you have another sub...
As an ancient experienced musician but novice to home recording I have recently found your videos and it seems they are really helpful for the likes of me. I am about to buy my first audio interface for recording vocal and electro acoustic guitar using GarageBand on my iPad , would your description of recording keyboard and vocal at the same time work for my setup as well?
Welcome aboard! If you buy a good interface with two inputs then you should easily be able to record your guitar and vocals at the same time. Choose one that has 2mic/line/instrument combi inputs and you should have a nice versatile recording setup.
Bang goes the conviction that (audio) technology is boys’ stuff! It takes a lady Jane to to straight-talk a newbie through the jungle. I’m just stuck with one burning question before investing in an audio interface. Forgive me if the answer is lurking behind one of your many hot-links. I have a legacy keyboard Roland U-20 and want to control instruments in Garageband or other DAWs through MIDI (because I don’t have the confidence to record live audio from the Roland instruments. In the DAW I can edit my inaccuracies. Of course I’d like to progress to recording voice and another live instrument (e.g. my son on guitar). I have two mics: a condensor and a dynamic. I guess the audio interface would normally take care of that bit. BUT … both mentioned mics have different connectors: the old Yamaha dynamic has a 3.5mm jack, the Røde videomic GO II has USB-C (I have dedicated cables outputting to USB-c or USB-A). I don’t want to record to a digital recorder (yet); rather to Garageband and the like on iPad Pro or MacBook Pro (USB-C and USB-A respectively). I didn’t see anything that looks like a USB port on the audio interface in your video, nor did I hear you mention it. While pioneering through the bush-trail I noticed that I couldn’t record voice and MIDI keyboard input simultaneously on the MacBook, even though it has 3 USB ports. The iPad Pro seems even more handicapped with its single (and only) USB-C. If I had a dongle with various (USB) ports, I don’t know if and how I could record on different tracks (one for the keyboard, one for each mic) simultaneously. HELP! I haven’t solved that one yet 😩. The guitar would be mostly electric (iMic is available). I have a wired MIDI IN/OUT to USB-A interface. I’d much appreciate advice on this connectivity question! Peter H The Netherlands
Very helpful video. Still figuring out what I can record into a video application like iMovie or QuickTime on Mac. Only getting channel 1. May need to use Loopback software. Thanks for this. If you have any content relevant to my challenge shoot me a reply.
Great to meet like minded piano players for live streaming :) My Focusrite 2i2 arrived today and i'm playing with reaper, its awesome... I tried your piano in one outline with the exact same wires and it just does not sound as good quality as pluging the piano as 2 ako left and right in the INST ONE AND TWO mic one... which means can't use my mic as u other slots for it so will have to get a usb mic instead right? FOR THE 2I2 ANYWAY Thanks
Hey, hope this message finds you well. I have setup since a while something similar to what you have shown here and on another video, mostly for live recording, filming myself playing Hammond Organ. I was also wondering to use a software similar to Pro Tools for recording, but the Pro Tools Intro, which is free, has issues on Windows an bhangs, I was wondering for some free or low costs alternative. I just need to simply create an audio track for a premade backing track and another instrument track for recording me playing on top of that backing track. Which one is the software you are using in here?
Really clear video ! @ 5'28" you talk about the "Line outputs". Do you mean that we need an audio interface like the one you showed to make it work ? Because my numeric piano is a yamaha p515. Does it mean that my focusrite is not compatible for that kind of piano ?
Merry Christmas Music Repo, merry merry to all your videos your friends, I have just discovered your videos over the last week "yay" thank you, be safe in health for 2021
Thank you Jane, another fantastic video; really well presented. I ordered the 2i2 last Thursday, but realise now that I need to return it when it comes and upgrade to the 4i4. Some lessons are learned the hard way ! A question please: Focusrite Scarlett models come bundled with Focusrite Red 2 & Red 3 Plug-in Suite, and Softube Time & Tone Bundle. Are these plug-ins compatible with Reaper please ?
Last week I tried to record vocals and keyboard at the same time and really had trouble with the vocal mic picking up the hammer action of the piano keys. I was using an electret-condensator mic. I was wondering whether it would make sense to use a singing mic such as a Shure SM58 instead.
Make sure your condenser mic is using a cardioid pattern and is pointed towards you and away from the piano. Having the mic further away from the piano would also help, although that might be difficult while singing and playing at the same time.
i have a basic problem when i record vocal and piano i hear in the recording from the mic the sound from the keys (tak tak)in to the track of the voice.what i can do i am waiting for your answer thank you
You may be able to try turning down volume of the digital piano for 1st 2-3 seconds on the recording while playing to pick up just the tak tak noise, then use this as the noise profile for noise reduction. Not sure if this would exactly work, but worth a try.
Madam...when you plugin a keyboard with phantom power switched ON (which applies to both the input channels) will it not damage my keyboard circuitry??
Wow! I've been confused on what cable to use to record my piano which has only headphone out, but you explained it perfectly. TRS end is to my keyboard's output and the TS end is to my interface input, have I got it right? Please someone confirm it so I can finally record myself playing my keyboard and avoid buying wrong cable.
..glad i found your channel.....i have to view twice, because english is a foreign language for me, but thats ok... 😅.... i have a Roland fp10 e piano, an arturia minilab midi- keyboard , reaper and ableton life light , the analog lab V as vst....now i want connect all , with monitors (coming) ......always struggling.... the e piano direct to PC is just for midi, right?... so i have to buy an audio-interface...greets from austria BM 🙂
That was very helpful... But did you forget to mention whether we need to turn on the Phantom power 48 Volts switch? If I am not wrong, then turning that switch on would apply phantom power to both the inputs... I wonder whether that's gonna damage the keyboard or not.... Please help...
Hi, I have a m-audio 88 hammer keyboard which doesn't have headphone capability. It only has USB port that directly connects computer. Can I record this keyboard and vocal at the same time using a Scarlett 2i2?
Hi, I want to record my poetry professionally. Please tell me a microphone and audio interface that gives me professional quality. But my room is not sound proof. At night, the sound of a motorcycle and barking dogs comes in my room from outside. But I also want to do a professional recording. Please tell me. my budget is around $350.
I want to record an audio of me singing and playing the piano so what is the most simplest way to do it ? I'm a complete novice when it comes to this recording stuff and I've got no clue
Nice video. You teach patiently and clearly. Thank you. My issue is that I use the same interface and set up (but with guitar instead of keyboards most of the time). The guitar (or piano) channel is fine but the vocal channel is polluted by sounds from the instrument. All is well and good until I try to process the vocal signal in my DAW and discover how cluttered/dirty up that channel really is. Is there a way to get two CLEAN signals? I don’t think there is
It is a very useful video. Can we record videos at the same time while recording this way. With a video camera or iPhone. Briefly how can we connect the audio interface to iPhone. Thank you.
you can start recording with both phone and daw at the same time, and then change the audio from iphone with the one recorded on your computer . sry for my bad english
I would be lost with all of the options without you. Question: I would like the piano sound to be stereo so I would use the Scarlett 4i4 option you talked about. I'm curious if it's a problem that since the piano is connected to the two line inputs in the back they will not have the gain control available. Do you think this will be an issue? If gain control is important for the piano connection an option is to use the Scarlett 18i since it has 4 inputs in the front each with a gain control. I would like to avoid the 18i since it much more expensive but just not sure how important the gain control will be. Thank you. Scott.
If I have the Left and Right outputs on my digital piano, but I only have the Solo Focusrite with the single instrument input, can I still use a dual TS output to the mono TS input?
I swear i was wondering how to record both my mic and piano through my piano's Line Out to my 2i2. I thought I need to split the stereo and L line out with y splitters into my 2i2. Guess I only need a normal TS to TS cable xD Great video
Greetings, I have a Yamaha 170 stand-up piano and I am trying g to connect my Focusrite 2i2, laptop with the OBS software together and Chordie app so I can record my voice and piano. I have no clue what cables to use! I have watched many of your videos but your connections on your portable keyboard looks different from mine so it does not help me. Can you help?
Hello. I hv a query. Can i sing on an MP4 karaoke track downloaded in my computer and simultaneously record on any software such as audacity using a condenser mic and a mixer? Or do I need some other software which allows the use of MP4 track as opposed to MP3? Kindly guide
Hi Jane, I am thinking if the condenser mic used to record vocals will also pick up the sound produced by the keyboard. What do you suggest? Thanks in advance.

I think phantom power should only be applied to XLR input not TRS or TS so will be OK
Hi, I have a m-audio 88 hammer keyboard which doesn't have headphone capability. It only has USB port that directly connects computer. Can I record this keyboard and vocal at the same time using a Scarlett 2i2?
This was really helpful, thank you. One question: how did you connect your interface to your computer? Thanks again.
Thank you!
I want to record an audio of me singing and playing the piano so what is the most simplest way to do it ? I'm a complete novice when it comes to this recording stuff and I've got no clue
Whenever I play a song using my MIDI connection, it comes out sounding really weird, only playing certain notes or chords at a time. Any suggestions?
That you sooo much for this!
I don’t think there is
My mic 🎤 picks up the clicking of my keys. What are some ideas to prevent that prior to editing?
It is a very useful video. Can we record videos at the same time while recording this way. With a video camera or iPhone. Briefly how can we connect the audio interface to iPhone. Thank you.
you can start recording with both phone and daw at the same time, and then change the audio from iphone with the one recorded on your computer . sry for my bad english
@@iseevlady Thank you.
Thank you. Scott.
Many thanks!!!
I have the Focusrite 4i4. Should that make any difference in following this set up?
Hi Jane, I am thinking if the condenser mic used to record vocals will also pick up the sound produced by the keyboard. What do you suggest? Thanks in advance.
I have this same question...seems like there's got to be a way to monitor the piano on headphones, if it has enough output jacks (?)
