Hi Josh - I'm a producer and have some experience with recording in a variety of situations. Having the microphone off to the side pointed at the wall of the piano is really hurting your recording quality - the only sound that can reach that mic is the reflected, muddy sound waves. It's the main reason why your voice sounds so clear and why the piano sounds so dull - when you're speaking, the sound from your mouth reaches the microphone directly, whereas the strings of the piano have to bounce all over the place before they finally reach the mic.
If the lid needs to be down (which is fine), then I'd put the mic higher and point it towards the opening of the lid so that more direct sound can reach the piano - think of it as letting the mic "see into" the piano. You can fine tune how much direct piano sound vs. room ambience (muddier but richer reflected piano sound and reverb) by placing the mic closer to or farther from the sound source as well.
Yep, I have my mic near the strings and it picks up the piano sounds cleanly and it sounds very clear, and there's very little influence from the room which would probably have too much reverb without special treatment.
Paul, if i'm using this as mic to record through to my mobile device (while shooting video), I can't really have it super close to the piano since I'm filming at the same time. At best, i've got it at a cardioid pattern several feet back from the piano. Any other suggestions for positioning?
I'm an engineer also - Josh could use some sound absorbing treatment in the room - especially since it looks like a small room. Drapes, carpets, even hanging a thick king-size bed comforter across the walls/corners.
I was wondering why the mic wasn't focsed to the piano
What advice would you give to record an upright piano with a mic like this Yeti?
Love your channel. USB mics are just so convenient. I have a a similarly priced mic as this one. Previously, I was using an XLR Rhode, MBox audio interface, ProTools, etc. and that setup was so much work, wasn't portable, and didn't sound sufficiently better.
I've always noticed that this microphone is used really often by all kinds of musicians... So this is why... Thanks for showing this!
No problem. Thanks so much!
Josh - where would you place this mic if it's an upright piano (against a wall)? Also, which Pattern setting would you use? Directionally to the front? Or the stereo option (left and right)?
Thanks Josh. This is what I needed. Right video right time.
Hi Josh. I'm so glad to have found your channel. You gave me lots of great ideas and advice on how to make my online lessons better and my students are all the better for it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!
I realize it's kind of randomly asking but does anyone know of a good place to watch newly released series online ?
@Samuel Lucca Flixportal =)
@Grant Sage Thanks, I signed up and it seems to work :) Appreciate it!!
@Samuel Lucca Glad I could help =)
Love that piece of Chopin ballade 4 :D
Thanks so much Randy!
Hi Josh, I was wondering if you happen to play any of the Chopin Scherzos or the Fantasie in F minor? It would be really awesome if you have time someday to maybe do a Pro Practice video or something on one of them :). Almost finished the 4 Ballades and really appreciated the help your videos provided for me through them. Finally managed to get that beast of a coda together lol.
Thank you - extremely helpful! And you sound beautiful.
I own it in black. It's great.
Hi Josh, do you record image and sound separately? Do you have a camera/smart phone set up in a distance?
Cool! I have this at work for recording software video tutorials, when I talk with friends (audio / video) they say the quality is "too good"... :)
Do you think I should use a filter in front of the mic?
Do you experience any issues having big hands? For example, do you have any trouble fitting your fingers between black keys?
I think the third setting allows the microphone to pick up reflected sound from behind as well as direct.
984francis interesting...I'll have to read up on that
The Yeti Pro is on my list of equipment to acquire. Such amazing capabilities for capturing the acoustic guitar! Currently, I'm using a Blue Snowball to record, and even that one does a great job with my guitar. Blue is the real deal!
As a side note, I'm glad to see you with a new mic setup, as your voice has typically been much more quiet than the piano.
DerisedEgami thanks for the support. The snowball is a good mic as well - I have a student that has one and he really loves it
Josh, I am now preparing for the Bachelor entrance exam at UdK Berlin and I want to record my repertoire to analyze it. Your voice sounds great in the video, but the piano voice does not. Do you have a better recommendation than the Yeti Silver Edition under 500€? Is the Yeti Pro better?
Hi Josh, I know that this might be a bit of a weird comment, but oh well. I was wondering if you could spare a little bit of advice. I'm going into my freshman year of high school this year, and music has always been a huge part of my life. I can sing, I've played piano since elementary school, same with flute, and I've been self teaching myself guitar for about a year now. This fall I'm also going to try to pick up the violin. I can also compose my own music. Anyway, my point of this is that I'm a bit stumped. As anyone would know, today it's hard to make it in the music business. Especially if you don't have a back up plan. And I do have a back up plan. But my dream is to become a professional musician. If I were to do that, what would you recommend? I plan to go to college and major in music performance, but what do I do after that? I'm going to try to get myself out there this year by posting videos of me playing different things on RUclips, but for an actually career, what should I try to do? It would really help me out if you could offer me any sort of advice at all. Thanks :)
Wish you all the best with fulfilling your dreams!
Thank you :)
Can I use this for my singing online lessons?
When is your concert? And will it eventually be posted onto RUclips?
Naples Florida...I don't think they allow it to be video recorded :(
Josh, what software program do you use to recort music on your Ipad/Macbook, etc? Thank You
Hello Josh, what camera are you using in this video?
Hey I believe I'm going to a concert of yours on the 25th am I correct?
Is there a significant difference in piano recordings from usb condenser mics vs camera mics? am looking for an affordable qay to record piano that would produce better recordings than the microphones in cameras/smartphones.
Yes
Wow. That sounds really good for a 100-dollar mic. As a musician myself and because I would like to make professional music videos with me playing, this seems very well affordable and sounds amazing. I'm very surprised. I'll certainly keep this mic in mind. Thank you.
Hello, I am trying to learn how to record and add voice track. I am using Audacity. I have the Blue Yeti. I have it place on the closed lid of the piano, right in front of me on the bench. Should the microphone be vertical or tilted toward the strings?
Serious question, how big are your hands?
Lemme guess, He can reach 12th or 13th.
Aorfu No you'd need to be really special to reach a 13th, he can probably reach an 11th. That's already a lot.
I said 12th, but in the way of spreading his hands at maximum span not pressing the 1st and 12th key.
Aorfu There's no point in spreading your hand if you're not going to play that interval on the piano.
Couldn't Rachmaninoff reach a 13th? Like that's ridiculous.
Josh - love all your videos. Here you seem to strike a good balance between your speaking volume and piano volume. Piano is as you say is close to hot but then we'd have a harder time hearing you speak, which comes in nice and clear - so excellent compromise. Great suggestion for a mike - good luck at your upcoming performance!
Came here for mic advice. Left realizing I have no business recording my shit... :)
The recording process itself is still fun. You should try it, it will motivate you !
I look at it as a learning experience because before I couldn't give a single fuck about recording all my shit... until I got kids. Now I record my stuff religiously. i.e. Family moments, parties, weddings, 🎸/🎹 sessions, landscapes etc...
there's a delay between the sound and the image. i dont know if its the microphone or not though
It’s probably not synced enough.
It takes forever, multiple tries, to sync it perfectly, so he probably gave up on one point.
I do that too, when it’s at least a decent video. :)
what video editing programs do you use?
Ty Xiong I use Adobe Premiere Pro. I used to use iMovie. Both are good, but Premiere Pro has a lot more capabilities and options.
Thanks !
Hei,thanks!
do you know if i can use blue yeti like a voice mic trough yamaha dgx660, to hear also my voice in the boxes?
Le'Anna There's a phone output from Yeti you can plug into your keyboard's input. But change the setting on the keyboard (if any) to "line in" instead of "mic" otherwise it will be too loud. Also avoid any feedback loop as the Yeti will pick up your keyboard's output.
is it okay to record with digital piano?
Yeah but if it has midi that's a much better and cheaper option
After watching this I was going to buy one but then I realized I don’t even have anything that I need one for lol
Yo great video! I have a Blue Snowball, do you think this will work as good?
I was looking for a variety of mics to compare. Probably should've read "microphone" in singular lol
For some reasone I was so scared that the laptop would fall off the piano
Nonsense! I’ve put my Mac on plenty of grand pianos it’s never fallen off of them.
Happened to me and chipped a key :-( the mac was totally fine lol
Why should the microphone be placed on the side and not on top of the piano?
It shouldnt
Bravo!
Kim Willard thank you Kim!
I got the extra microphone from piano and I really like to sing.
mic didnt sound great for piano although voice did . but maybe because there seems to be a black quilt or somethiing going into the piano ?
tone the moan yes, if I was recording just piano I could raise the lid, but the sound balancing wouldn't work well between the voice and piano. The acoustics of the room aren't great - I've used a yeti in a concert hall and it actually sounded really good. Not pro grade, but amazing for a $100 mic.
Sorry, am I the only one bothered that the microphone sounds really bad for it's price range? I mean, I'm not producing for big artists or anything, but with my experience that just sounds crappy. I've seen t.bone and Behringer small condenser stereo pairs sound way better. I love your videos and everything, but maybe try different mic positioning idk. It sounds really bad to me at least.
It’s convenient but the quality isn’t great.
The sound is not as good:)
That microphone sounds absolutely horrible for piano, I dont see why you would even recommend this to begin with, theres so many cheaper, better usb microphones...
The microphone sounds great for the voice recording, but when he starts playing piano the quality of the recording is definitely a lot worse. I have had a very similar experience with several other similarly priced microphones. I believe that this is caused not by the microphone but by the physical setup of the room, and how the sound propagates from the piano to the mic, including many reflections in the room. In one setup at home, the high notes on the piano sound great in a recording, but the low ones do not. Therefore I think there is even some sound canceling going on, where different reflections of the same note cancel each other out when they reach the microphone. All in all, I think the issue is not with the microphone per se.
@@cloew It doesnt help also that it's just a single microphone, Piano should always be recorded with atleast 2 microphones unless you're recording it for a mix with different instruments.
Maybe it would sound better with two of this microphone, but at that price you may as well get a semi-professional setup anyway haha
Just buy a blue snowball
Its really not a good dont get a yeti this is a sellout video as a sound engineer he probably has no idea about mics
Wizardly Sundew your wrong. For the price i found it had a acceptable sound for small projects or youtube videos like this one. Your full of shit
Wizardly Sundew sounds like you didn't listen to the video very carefully. My pro setup is an Apollo Twin Duo with AKG 414 mics. For some musicians, a $3000 setup is out of the budget. I wanted to make this video to help those first getting into recording, or looking for an inexpensive way to improve the sound from internal speakers.
Fretboard Sam I agree that for the price it has an incredible sound. Way better than internal microphones on a computer
in my country it's over 180$ :(
