    The true irony of Lance is that as much as he says he could never have stepped into Stacey's shoes, the fact that he went face-to-face with Rocco and walked away because of his heart shows that Stacey had truly chosen a true lover of skateboarding and knew that Lance embodied the true spirit of the useless wooden toy that we love.

    • @juvedoo99
      @juvedoo99 3 года назад +15

      Stacy knew how to pick guys based on character and not skill alone.Rocco got greedy and only cared about making as much money as possible, any way possible. That little empire fell, and it fell hard.

      The TRUE irony is that as much knowledge you think you have about "Useless Wooden Toy" legends, the fact that's what you called the most important thing in most skaters lives, and also that your name is Scooter LaFontaine is hella crazyyy!! 🤣

    I skated when I was a kid, then had a loooong gap and didn't really follow the scene, not that in my little village in Finland there would've been a scene or possibility to follow it anyway :D, so I LOVE watching these original people like Lance telling stories and sort of letting me in a little bit, make up for lost time :) Watching Hawk vs. Wolf religiously as well. Lance is so on point and perceptive...He knows what it has always been about. Many things are like this in life...you cannot capture, bottle, and sell something thats essence is always just out of reach for those trying to reach it so they can pin it down; it is always changing and growing. By trying to pin it down and predict it, you are actively killing the essence that fuels and drives the thing, promoting an image of aesthetic rather than authentic experience and influence, effectively trying to stabilize and economize something that by its nature cannot be stabilized and economized in any traditional sense.

    Lance was by far my favorite skater in the eighties. My third board was a Powell Lance with bonite. I thought it was a mini deck. I bought it used and only realized years later that homie had cut it down to make it look fresh. The tail was super short and the bonite didn't help it pop either. I think my next deck was a used Roskopp or Blender in far better condition, and after six months or so on the Lance, my pop instantly doubled. I wish I still had that deck. Lance, thanks for sending me off on one of the most meaningful journeys of my life.

    When I was a teenager, I called up the Firm to ask to get my hardcore band called Bloodshed sponsored to get some free decks for our upcoming tour and I had the greatest conversation with the guy who picked up the phone about hardcore music, Christianity and just life. After two hours I asked, "Sorry, we have been speaking for a long time. May I ask, "Who I am talking to?". He goes, "My name is Lance." To which I replied, "LANCE MOUNTAIN?!?!"

    This has been one of my favourite eps. Lance Mountain is a legend and it was cool hearing all the stories from all the generations he skated. It was so a different vibe from all the other ones. Such a humble guy and another interesting character in skating!! I was an old school skater who has found his love for skating again. I have become almost obsessed with watching this channel/podcast. Thanks for blending all generations of skating!! .. Some interesting guest would be Alva and Muska. Also more girl skaters would be dope also!

    I remember when we went to the Southbank for the first time around 87/88. We were suburban kids, completely clueless - we found it as you could hear people skating and once you got near see people skating. Talk about being schooled, all the skaters were hard-core city kids totally street wise compared to us. This was when homeless rough sleepers would sleep at the South Bank and there was an area called cardboard city. It was an eye opener for a 15 year old kid, I remember one skater telling just to stay away from the homeless people and leave them alone and don’t stare at them. Some of the skaters were nice to us, the took us around the city, showed us how to travel on the tube and busses without a ticket for free - they skated through stations and just ignored security who shouted at us - we were so niave! They took us to Kings Cross ramp when it was still vert and some other places. We grew up pretty fast after that. It seems crazy what we used to do as young kids, going up to central London to street skate on our own - no phones just tell our parents we were going skating, and this was in the 80s were a lot of areas of London were not all nice like they are now and were still pretty sketchy. I doubt I would want my kids doing what I did at 15, but it was different times and it was an education that you don’t get at school. We told some other friends who we skated with, but didn’t really like that much as they were kind of rich kids, that we had been to south bank and they went the following weekend and three of them had their boards stolen - they must have stuck out like sore thumbs!

    this might be the best episode. that first hour was philosophy-- I actually tried to explain this to my little brother recently before even seeing what lance said. I feel like skateboarding has progressed so much in terms of tricks that good skating almost doesn't even phase me anymore. I saw some kid do like a 1260 and I kind of didn't care. Imagine that. "some kid" did a fucking TWELVE SIXTY and I didn't care. Why? It just gets to a point where you're numb to it. It's not rad anymore. The way I felt watching Jamie Thomas hit his head after front boarding that steep ass hand rail meant more for me because "skating was moving" as lance might say. It wasn't trying to figure out where the kids want the quarter pipe, it was adapting. To this day I would rather see a sick simple trick at an interesting spot to a good song than some of the more advanced stuff im inundated with on instagram. don't get me wrong, I fucking love extremely great skateboardin and I'm blown away by some of the stuff I've seen lately. Namely Milton's kickflip into the car wash. the earth stopped spinning with that. But to me that's more towards what lance is getting at
    "skating rewards the people who adapt" I love that quote

    Lance seems to really struggle with his role in skateboarding. He knows he has done things that had impact and is proud of his contributions, but he seems to have an inner struggle with being humble and acknowledging his impact. Also, Lance's contributions to the Powell videos are often my favorite. To this day I think his bit in Propaganda where he has the mad dog shirt and bandana while running with his board forever, then getting on his board like he is trying to be aerodynamic to ride fast, to then losing his board and chasing after it forever... Dude is a great skateboarder with an entertaining personality. Again, one of my all time favorites.
    Plus, I skated Desert West skate park in Phoenix, AZ with just him, Ray Barbee, and a few other people from The Firm during a weekday morning. I went home and got my Public Domain video and asked him and Ray to sign it which they both did. Ray had a cast on his wrist at the time and Lance was goofing around with funny tricks in the bowls and he even did some tricks on the hubba ledge. It was my first time meeting pros that I looked up to (Ray and Lance) and neither he nor Ray disappointed me. They are real legends. I would love to meet Lance again and ask if he remembers anything at all from that day.
