  • Decoding Led Zeppelin Part 2: Did Led Zeppelin Write Their Own Material? Launching Led Zeppelin!
    Hey everyone!
Many have claimed that Led Zeppelin was the world’s best cover-band. What do they mean by that?
What is a cover-band? A cover-band is a band that usually does ‘covers’ of songs, or in other words, they don’t write their own stuff!
On a local level, this usually means more money, more gigs, because your average bar attendee, would much rather listen to something familair!
What does all this have to do with Led Zeppelin? Well, many claim that many of their songs, especially on their first 2 albums, weren’t actually written by them!
What songs off their first album weren’t actually theirs? Who was Jimmy Page looking at as a possible lead singer for Led Zeppelin? And just how do you launch a Led Zeppelin?
Easy! You need Thrusters! And it’s all covered in tonight’s video!
Also, don’t forget to subscribe to ‘The Tribe’! And if you enjoy tonight’s video, consider giving us a ‘Thumbs-Up’! And of course, any sharing of my videos is greatly appreciated!
    Enjoy!

I, too, am sick of hearing that tired trope claiming Zep was a "cover" band who depended on "stolen" music. Anyone who understands music history, particularly in blues and Americana music, knows that it was an accepted practice to take music and/or lyrics from what came before, and work them into new songs. It may not have been "right", according to modern legal standards, but it was a common practice. It's also probable that LZ did not always get the best legal advice on these matters.
I firmly believe that if Led Zeppelin had not become such a huge success, everyone who made such a huge kerfuffle over supposedly "stolen" songs would not have gained much, if any, traction. Jealousy of musical peers, hurt feelings of critics who couldn't make an impact on the band, or its fans, and our increasingly litigious society made it popular to do anything that might bring the mighty Led Zeppelin down a peg. History shows that none of that worked.
If anyone still has doubts about LZ's creativity, they need to listen to the originals, and previous cover versions, of the songs in question, and compare them to LZ's material. It's clear that each of these songs becomes something new and quite different!
It's also evident that as LZ grew and matured as songwriters, they depended less and less on "borrowed" material, and more on original compositions. If they were *just* a cover band, why did they stop doing covers?

      What a wonderful response, Debby!
As I’ve stated elsewhere in the comments tonight, these critters who think themselves critics ALL knew this was going on! They never brought it up, or if they did, they brought it up very gently!
      1. They wrote the articles because the articles were assigned to them!
      2. They an hour or two on research for the article, WHILE listening to their albums
      3. Therefore never getting the music, because they weren’t REALLY listening!
      4. They typed it out, along with 3 other assigned articles in a single day!
      5. And thought themselves our conscious???

Although it was determined that Zeppelin had indeed "lifted" from other artists and unfairly credited themselves as the original authors, I've seen the move as two-fold, if not more. First, as you mentioned, most of the material of Jimmy's playing on Zeppelin 1 was from what he had learned throughout the years. Giving the songs the Led Zeppelin version in a haphazard way means, DID make it a "Led Zeppelin" song. Was it Page's way of paying homage? Maybe. But he wasn't known for sharing the wealth from profit. Which brings me to the 2nd fold...It's kinda shitty, BUT, once you've made money from the song, it's yours! Then it falls back to the originator to claim suit. For example, "Whole Lotta Love" made millions for Zeppelin (for easy math we're going to say $200 million) and did not credit Willie Dixon's "You Need Love." Dixon sues and wins let's say $25 million. He's happy with his winnings, Zeppelin still keeps $175 million of "stolen money." Just kinda shitty, you might ask? Yep, just kinda. My question is, IF Zeppelin hadn't recorded and released "Whole Lotta Love" would Dixon's "You Need Love" have made him any more earnings? I think not.

As a tragic Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page fan, I'd like to add a few things that might interest you.
Peter Grant at this time was Jeff Beck and Jimmy Pages manager. Peter was also partners with singles hits producer Micky Most who was not a fan of album producing. Which brings in a factor that the critics of the time took a disliking of albums that the likes of Led Zeppelin and Jeff Beck produced. This in turn could also conclude that the critics were influenced by the likes of Micky Most. Conclude what you will!

The amazing vocals of Maggie Bell (described by some as the Scottish Janis Joplin).
Les Harvey on Guitar who tragically died of electrocution on stage and was also brother of Alex Harvey of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band),
And James Dewar on Bass who went on to be Lead Singer and Bassist for Robin Trower.
The band were originally called "Power" until Peter Grant saw them live and his initial reaction was he was blown away he said "Stone the Crows", Signed them up, Unfortunately he didn't plug them enough (due to him managing Led Zeppelin), and their commercial success was limited.

I first saw Led Zeppelin at the Okeefe Centre in Toronto Dec. 69..age 19. It was relatively short set with a few old rock and roll covers as an encore medley. The first song was a 10 minute version of Whole Lotta love and hearing it for the first time was indeed a revelation. At the end of the show a bunch of folks off the floor rushed the stage and the suited middle aged ushers were all knocked about and even off the stage…After the show me and my college mates discovered the opening band’s (Edward Bear) cube Van was sitting hood opened so we went over to help and the 6 of us pushed the truck up to the loading docks where we could see what was going on backstage..Their was a lot of commotion due to the fact that someone had stolen JP’s blue suede jacket..l.I hears him say If I catch the decker that stole me decking jacket I’ll feckin kill i’m.”Needless to say we decided to get out while we could and we had never even heard of Peter Grant at that early time…

Michael all I can say is wow this is great work. If you can teach anything to new guitar players to banjo mandolin whatever string instrument that they're playing, that it is very important even though they may but not be Center but they should be facing forward to it shows respect for the instrument. It's called proper guitar etiquette, whether you're standing or sitting or even sitting on the ground, all artists should be facing the audience with their instrument. I learned this when I was a little child playing guitar. And of course sometimes you have to message to the other players, and you change directions if you have a semicircle audience. But, majority of the song should forward face to expose that instrument, it is proper guitar etiquette. Lead singers are usually front and center but still the guitar should be somehow facing forward whether it's the left side or the right side, the instrument should be seen by the audience watching. Michael thank you again for a great video it's so interesting and very appreciated.

Invited him down to his houseboat in Panghorn for a few days to see if they meshed musically AND personally (very important) and it was Plant who suggested his mate Bonham to Page. Still looking for my source regarding Terry mentioning Bonzo!
Yes Plant did suggest Bonzo, and even though Jimmy did invite Plant over and all, he still had his doubts! Here’s one of my sources! Excellent book btw!
As usual, you keep me honest, and that’s the important thing! Thank you!
My Source regarding Jimmy first meeting Robert:
Jimmy: ‘I liked Robert,’ he would later tell me. ‘He obviously had a great voice and a lot of enthusiasm. But I wasn’t sure yet how he was going to be on stage; what he’d be like once we actually got together as a band and started playing.’ What sealed the deal was the arrival into the story of a pal of Plant’s from Brum, a drummer named John Bonham. Bonham and Plant had been in the Band of Joy together. According to Jimmy, ‘The one I was really sure about right from the off was Bonzo.”

“Meanwhile,’ said Reid, ‘I was doing a gig. I think it was in Buxton with the Band of Joy. I’d seen them before, and I knew Robert Plant and John Bonham. And this time, as I watched them, I thought: “That’s it!” I could hear the whole thing in my head. So the next day I phoned up Jimmy. He said, “What does this singer look like?” I said, “What do you mean, what does he look like? He looks like a Greek god, but what does that matter? I’m talking about how he sings. And his drummer is phenomenal. Check it out!””

This whole plagiarism thing in my opinion is mainly a way of trying to make a fast buck and, secondly, to bash and put down artists that gave songs a new dimension, often more successful and also BETTER than the "original". Just think of Prince's Nothing compares 2 U. An average Prince song, it was Sinead O'Connor who made a true gem and a monster hit out of this rough diamond by pouring her deepest felt emotions into that song, changing some harmonies, making it soft, female compared to the heavier original! Or what's up by the 4 non blondes, of course the line is very much "Don't worry be happy" by Bobby Mc Ferrin , BUT the song as a whole is a totally different thing, much more than just a copy! Hotel California/We used to know by Jethro Tull, same chords, so what? I knew both songs but it never came to my mind that the Eagles might have "stolen" it from Jethro Tull. I think Ian Anderson never thought of claiming royalties from them. Bittersweet Symphony, this brilliant tune of Richard Ashcroft, thank god Keith and Mick gave the credits back to Ashcroft some years ago.
Why do you think did many of the artists not have that much success with their songs as later interpretations? In the case of Led Zeppelin, they created new versions that exceeded the originals by far in terms of power and musicianship. With all respect for these old blues men, Led Zeppelin took their music to another level.
And, when you start doing something, not only music, in most cases you have somebody who inspires you, some idol. And your first steps are to copy your idol before you develop your own style.

Technically, every popular song of the last 75 (or probably even longer) years is taken from somewhere else. Even Louis Armstrong got his jazz ideas from watching New Orleans street musicians. It just doesn't matter whether rock took from the blues or Dylan ( who has stated himself) got a lot of his inspiration and melodies from early folk music like Woody Guthrie or even up to more modern times of rap artists sampling other genres. It's about taking music and making it your own and making it well. If it's done well, it's just good music. At least, that's how I view music.

Led Zeppelin can rightly be accused of not crediting sources. It is also true that what Led Zeppelin did with this material created something that had never been heard before. If they had only credited Willie DIxon right off the bat this whole debate would be far more muted.

Pull out any OG copy of LZ I and look directly at the record label under 'You Shook Me'.
Who was it credited to? How about 'I Can't Quit You Baby'. Do you see it? It's also typed on the back of the album cover of the debut album.
They both say, and have always said, "Willie Dixon".
I still can't believe that there are people that still don't notice what the record labels have printed directly on them.

At the time it was not considered bad edicate to use other musicians material especially in the Blues, and jazz. This was the norm not the exception, most of the Blues music at the time was largely public domain. I would consider early Zeppelin more a Blues band than a rock band, they largely saw themselves this way as well.
According to Page, it was Plant who introduced Bonham to Page, Jones had worked together with Page in the Yardbirds. Page had asked Jones to join the band, but he declined, it was Jones wife who goaded him into joining the band.

All those British bands took something from those old blues players. But they also put their names out their. Nobody would have heard of them otherwise. America was too racist ar the time these guys were alive to acknowledge their genius. And I think those artists that were still alive were very appreciative of the accolades. Muddy waters even covered rolling stones songs later on. Also I want to mention that led zeppelin were looked down upon as tossers or posers by their contemporaries. (Kind of how we look at 80s hair bands). The who, the stones, the kinks, even maybe the beatles etc. Must have been really threatened by led zeppelin when they hit the scene.

The fact is, Zeppelin didn't do anything that Cream, Jeff Beck Group, Fleetwood Mac, Stones, Yardbirds, Animals and every other worthwhile band from the UK blues scene didn't do. All those bands were playing blues covers early on. Whether or not they credited the original artists was a legal or perhaps ethical issue but it didn't change the fact that the Zeppelin arrangements were stellar and the musicianship was incredible. It's the most naive point of view imaginable to suggest Zeppelin were alone in doing it , and in my estimation the best work Zeppelin did was their original material anyway.

This goes back like you said all the way not just rock but country blues jazz . Plus Page took inspiration from many places but he made them his own . No body’s fault but mine Zeppelin sounded nothing like the original except the words . Even Grandpa Jones did it he took a traditional song and put his name on it . People don’t understand writing credits earn you money ! So they took a chance to help recoup costs period . It’s no plagiarism in the true sense of the word . One name you forgot as singer was Steve Marriott from small faces , but their manager Sharon Osbornes father sent Jimmy a letter asking how he would like to play guitar with broken fingers ? I’m not sure I believe that , I don’t think Peter Grant would stand for that , seeing he was a thug himself. Oh well you decide . And how many British bands recorded the same songs when the Beatles came out rollover Beethoven plenty Jimmy even played sessions on some your point is well taken . After the first record each one had more original songs then all were original after the second more or less

@@johncoppola8105 Lennon was sued by a gentleman named Morris Levy who was a huge record producer, and owned the rights of the song "You Can't Catch Me" for plagiarising the line "here comes ol' flat top" from Berry's version of "here comes a flat top." Not only was the lyric lifted, but the whole cadence of Berry's song was used and is the same as Come Together. Lennon's attitude toward the lawsuit was that it was a tribute to Chuck Berry. Just like Zeppelin with some of their accusers, the matter between Morris Levy and John Lennon was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.

Nobody wanted to play for him including myself. I was a bass player. Berry would play the Ritz in NYC and there would less people there than on a regular DJ dance night.
