- Led Zeppelin Is Back!
Hey everyone! In this video, I continue to explore the many aspects of Led Zeppelin.
This time however I explore not only how they developed their sound from the very first album, but doing so in the face of some very stiff competition!
Bands like Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, excellent bands in their own write, just couldn’t bridge the gap between themselves and the unattainable level that Led Zeppelin not only enjoyed, but maintained for over a decade!
Shout-Outs will be given at the end of the video, as well as reveals of further ‘Olympian Level’ bands that I will cover in future videos!
So a stay to the end of the video, is not only appreciated, but informative for you, the viewer as well!

A lot of people forget that Hendrix was a fantastic composer take a look at his deep cuts... Most people know him only for songs such as purple Haze or foxy lady but he has a tremendous depth with the other songs that he's composed.
Page and Hendrix are at the top for me.

Iommi's fingertip prosthetics were/are made of leather.
It started with him cutting up an old leather jacket of his & he said it just worked & felt right.

“The musician made the plastic covers himself, by melting plastic liquid-soap bottles into a ball and then using a soldering iron to make holes into this ball, putting his fingers in while the plastic was still soft enough to be shaped. He then trimmed and sanded away the excess plastic to leave himself with two thimbles, which he then covered with leather, to provide better grip on the strings.
For many years Zeppelin 3 was my favorite album, but in recent years the new favorite is Physical Graffiti. Most of the songs on Graffiti are very moving mentally and emotionally. Don't forget that The Who in the 70's gave Zeppelin a serious run for their money. Who's Next and Quadrophenia are very intense albums.
Fans just discovering these great bands from the 60s and 70s will never experience that music like those of us who were alive when these bands were out. Being alive during the 60s and 70s when these bands were rocking football stadiiums and being played on every FM rock radio station is a memory of not only the music but also the memory of what life was like in that era so we get the great music to still listen to today and the fitting memory of the era that gave birth to these bands and their music. If I could I would get the hell out of 2023 in a heartbeat to go back to the 1960s so I could experience it again.
my 2 favorite bands are Zep and Queen so when you put Plant and Mercury at the top.......you grabbed my heart!

Thanks for this story good sir. My generation is one step downstream, so I encountered Led Zeppelin after I had already dug Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Metallica for a few years of my early teens. Was Steve Harris in interviews that turned my attention back to the bands that inspired him to form Iron Maiden. He mentioned Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Rush and Pink Floyd. In 1986 I was full on metalhead, but secretly really digging the soft trippy sections of metal songs. So I really had no idea that Zep was so key in establishing the current that led to the bands I was into in my early teens. By 1990 I was playing bass and singing in progressive rock bands, writing songs, the whole deal. The Beatles did similar things with mood changes and dynamics, but only Helter Skelter ever got near as heavy as Zep. My favorite musics are exactly the thing they did, the way of getting really heavy and also be able to go mid range pop and then quiet and trippy. What about King Crimson? They blew up into public eye same time as Zep, but didn't dominate the 70's like Zep did. They do all the things Zep did, but differently. Fripp is less bluesy is the thing. He's kind of like what if Mozart played guitar. 20th Century Scitzoid Man is as heavy as anything, and it was right alongside the emergence of Zep and Sabbath.

My brother bought me my first Zeppelin album , I was 11 and it was a year after they split.
It was Zeppelin Three. So I was hooked on their range from heavy to subtle acoustic from the start.
Love Led Zeppelin, The Beatles , The Stones, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath to name a few. One of my favorite LPs would be Demons and Wizards by the Heep Just so much great music I grew up with.
I've always considered the "big 4" as being:
1. Beatles
2. Stones
3. Who
4. Zeppelin
Groups such as DP, Sabbath, Floyd and even a shout out to the Kinks fall in place in no particular order. But hey, it's all subjective and all of these bands are fabulous in their own way !! Love your videos brother !!

I so agree. Zeppelin is the best rock group ever. Greatest singer, guitarist, drummer and bass player who could play anything. They experimented, improvised, and were so creative. Their cord progressions, transitions were so new. Their lyrics were thought provoking and sung with so much emotion.

My favorite guitarist today is Marcus King, the guy is just an absolute legend in the making. I can't imagine anybody that loves guitarist and hasn't seen him by now, but if you haven't check him out you won't be disappointed.

As a band, Zeppelin was three steps ahead. Jimi Hendrix, the guitar player, song writer and master of studio experimentation, was three steps ahead of Zeppelin. Hendrix was really a solo artist, with great bandmates supporting him. Zeppelin was a band, with four parts pulling together to create amazing sounds. Hendrix made amazing sounds, his bands rode his creativity and energy.
I don't think Hendrix was 3 steps ahead of Zep...All the Greatest ruled their era...Elvis ruled for a time in the late 50's to early 60's...The Beatles Ruled bettween 64 and 67...Hendrix ruled from 67 to 70...Led Zep ruled from 70 to 73..Pink Floyd ruled from 73 to 79..etc...
Love the tremendous guitar solo Jeff Beck performed on The Yardbirds' B-side of "Shapes of Things", "Mister You Are a Better Man Than I" in 1966.

It’s not so much that they are head and shoulders above, I mean they are of course, but more importantly they basically wrote the blueprint changing and expanding the boundaries with the way rock music is approached and the possibilities within the genre were increased tremendously. All four were incredible innovators and together they became more than the sum of their parts..they exuded a Presence, if you will lol.

Led Zeppelin is and will always be my favorite band of all time! I really don't care at all for bands like Queen or Rush but i do like the Beatles a lot. Yes, for me Jimmy Page is on top with Jimi Hrndrix at a close second. Robert Plant is number 1 on the singer/frontman category, though i will have to include Paul Rogers as a worthy mention as well. Indeed, Thank You Bro Michael Noland for such an illuminating feature on Led Zeppelin!

I'm totally on board with the idea of songs first, players second. Iommi was a fountain of original Heavy Metal riffs, and that's why they're still relevant today. Purple had great players but not the imagination for consistently interesting material, despite Blackmore having more technical chops than either Iommi or Page. Zeppelin had everything, and Plant is significant in that he introduced a style that could be used in any context and fit anything the others could come up with.

Not everyone is! I wasn’t immediately taken with them at first. They seemed too far distant from my blessed Beatle sound! But the more I heard, the more impressed I was with them!
As I mentioned in a recent video, I didn’t actually buy an album by them until ‘Houses Of The Holy’. Once I heard the more accessible cuts on that album, I was hooked!

Led Zeppelin were the architect's of heavy metal,and black Sabbath and deep purple following. I love your unbiased opinion and you are spot on about these bands. I grew up listening to them and of course still do! Led Zeppelin will always remain supreme to all of them.

My Fav Zep albums is II and Physical Graffiti.
My first musical memory was my Dad’s vinyl copy of the first Zep album at 4 years old. I remember asking why there was a turd on the cover! My musical landscape was set and got a history lesson.

New subscriber here -- I discoved your channel because of the Led Zeppelin videos. I have been a LZ (especially Robert Plant) fan since their music was first released. After the release of Raise the Roof (RP's second collaboration with Alison Krauss), last fall, I did a sort of retrospective, listening to the entire Zep catalog. Instead of digging out all of the old vinyl and CDs and dusting off the turntable, I decided to listen to these songs on RUclips. I had not watched much RUclips, and while searching for legitimate versions of Zep material, I discoved this phenomenon of *reaction* videos. I was suprised to find so many *reactions* to LZ, especially from very young hip hop and rap fans who were totally unfamiliar with the music that basically made up the sound track of my adult life -- centering on LZ! I found some of these *reactions* quite entertaining (a few are good, but most are superficial and musically uninformed click-bait).I also discoved a small handful of actual adults, with knowledge of music, and a historical context, reacting to and reviewing Led Zeppelin music. You are one of the latter. Your last few LZ videos had enough to say that I decided to subscribe! Please continue!

In ‘ 69, Zeppelin took off right out the gates with an explosion, just like the Hindenburg itself. From that point on the fire would burn even brighter into complete stardom throughout the 70s. And all of us were glad it did.
The greatest asset Led zeppelin had over everyone else at the time was that they were genuinely ‘Trad/ folk’ based..it was this element that gave them universal appeal. There was something of the Traditional style that underscored zeppelins music and everyone loved that..yes they rocked like no one else or at least on the same level as their peers, but Page, plant and John Paul Jones exuded traditional music values throughout everything they ever produced eg., babe I’m going to leave you, gallows pole, going to California, Stairway, Bron y aur stomp etc etc. This was universal and gave them the edge over everyone bar none.
Exactly! They Rocked and could have stayed at the top doing just that. But they didn’t! They weren’t there to be pigeon-holed! They were there to explore, and then create! Great points, ru!
There’s no doubt that Zeppelin was the top band the ability Page had to compose a song to write a riff to stay innovative was unmatched were the other great guitarist were proficient at their instrument Page could do so much more with do little . Like the bbc announcer said after a show John Peel I think said pretty amazing stuff considering it was all done in mono no 8 tracks . And the first album a tele a Supra amp and a couple of pedals . Today you push a button get any sound you want , Page had a musical Brain . He might not have been the most technically proficient guitarist but pushing the envelope creating sounds and feeling he was the best IMHO !!!!!!
Speaking of John Paul Jones, He's also known to attend & jam out on the mandolin at bluegrass festivals.

Michael, how about Terry Kath? When Jimi Hendrix heard Terry Kath play, he said Kath is better than him. Hendrix also said the Chicago horns sounded like one set of lungs 🫁!
Plant's power and range, combined with otherworldly expression and phrasing...early Robert Plant was and IS untouchable!
And it wasn't only that Page is such a killer with the geeetar, but, he could produce the hell out of the studio tracks PLUS! he is an incredibly shrewd business mind. Critics could literally make or bury a band (especially in the UK) back in the day. Page rendered them redundant with how he approached the handling of business side of things, their opinions mattered not a whit. Amazing musician, amazing man.

Absolutely. Peter Grant pushed hard for the U.S. radio stations to play Zeppelin's music. The band loved Peter & it went both ways. His belief was the artist deserved to be bringing home the lions share of profits from their talents. Unlike the creep that managed Badfinger's career & finances and not only derailed an amazing band, but contributed to the deaths of two of the bands members. Peter Grant. Legend. R.I.P.

It'll be interesting to hear what you have to say about Jethro Tull... I've seen many interviews with Ian Anderson over the years and he's one of the most fascinating and intelligent characters in rock history. Tulls catalog looking back was witness to a man growing musically and as a person. He seems much more content as a human being now then his early eccentric days. He seems so unimpressed with his antics in his younger years. But the facts remain, with all the things he was responsible for and his stage presence he might have been the greatest frontman of all time. He had some great musicians working with him but Anderson did everything but drive the limo to the concerts.
Deep Purple and Black Sabbath were incredible, fantastic bands. But their "genre" of music was limited compared to Zep. Zep's catalog ranged from Dazed and Confused, to Rain Song, to Dyer Maker, to Song Remains the Same, to Fool in the Rain....and everything in-between. Zep went places brilliantly where Sabbath or Purple never went, or couldn't go. Zep could be as heavy as Sabbath or Purple, but Sabbath or Purple could never be as light or diverse as Zeppelin.
I agree! To simply see Led Zeppelin as a heavy Rock band is not only too simple, it’s truly short-sighted (short-listened?)!

Why is it Led Zeppelin gets the bum wrap? That’s how art progresses! It’s easy to just pick an act, usually the bigger, the better, and tear them down! LZ were no more guilty than even other black acts from re-writing the blues! The very second that the second blues song was written, there was a ripping off of what came before!opinion,

Even Toni Iommi doesn't take Sabbath to be metal. It's hard rock. Heavy metal came from a music critic describing the music in those terms. Musicians make music. Critics form genre police. To me the best musics defy and evade them.
@@christopherone1 they had songs that were as Heavy as anything else in 1969. Immigrant Song could be considered Proto Metal. They didn't consistently get Heavier album to album like Black Sabbath did from 1970 to 1975 . Led Zeppelin were at their Heaviest in 1969 , although the 1976 Presence album had a few Heavy songs. Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Dust, Sir Lord Baltimore, and Atomic Rooster were all Heavy Classic Rock. Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny was the first actual Heavy Metal album
Just listen to The Who way back in 1966, listen to Townshends guitar on, I Can See For Miles. Nuff said.

They were other great bands back then. Humble Pie, Steve Marriott one of the best frontman with an incredible voice, Grand Funk, were kicked off Led Zepp's tour in 1970/71 (fact) because Grand Funk were huge in the USA
Actually, Grand Funk had the crowd so crazed that Peter Grant made Terry Knight take Grand Funk off. It caused a riot at the Detroit Olympia
Sorry Michael Noland I respect you very much, but for me is Jimi Hendrix, he plays in a league of his own. Virtuoso, highly creative, innovative and brave.
The man had his own musical world to play through.
I truly love Jimi! He, Page, and Jeff Beck were the most innovative guitar players of their era, MGT! You and I may rank them differently, but dad respect for Mr. Hendrix!👌

Oh absolutely! Most of them! That’s the magic of Led Zeppelin!
He's probably not as inventive as Plant, but David Coverdale's voice is outstanding. The two are hard to split in my view based on raw vocal talent. Coverdale's vocal control and overall versatility is not to be underrated.
I think the three bands, Purple, Sabbath and Zeppelin cannot be compared. Purple are the best ever classic hard rock band; Sabbath clearly the innovators and best classic heavy metal band and zeppelin clearly the coolest band ever, heavy rock, folk, dirty blues etc. All legends all incomparable.
The thing that sets Zeppelin apart from their peers in the 70s was their ability and willingness to completely change their sound with each album. Jimmy Page didn't follow trends , he played what he wanted to hear

@@PlayerToBeNamedLater1973 yeah , leaving the guitar playing out of it, it was a tragic end to a talented young man. He was good , but he wasn't Blackmore. Just didn't fit right. Ian Paice said his live playing and stage presence wasn't up to RB or DP standards. Probably because of drugs.
Hope your viewers check out Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and Spirit. These are artists LZ blatantly copied while putting their own names on the writing credits. LZ was a great group of musicians but today employ an army of attorneys to sue anyone who plays a snippet of their catalog. Pretty ironic I think. The Stones, Animals and others championed their heroes, praised their influence and exposed them to the listening public. So glad they did!!!
Oh but you will hear ton of excuses like "nobody knewed those songs" or "Zeppelin made those songs better" etc.
Live at Leeds is peerless, I love Zep but I don’t think they could touch The Who in their prime
Live At Leeds was recorded in one night, and released. Only 1 show, unlike Song Remains The Same, which was many shows.Not years of cleaning up in the studio, with all kinds of over dubbing like Page does. A truly great rock band is what they can do live. The Who has proven themselves live. High energy, volume, just master blaster rock.
Late 60's- early 70's no one could touch the 'orrible Who live. Just think how awesome that time period was tho.

Asked if there is anything that he has envied about the other two bands that are considered to be part of the "holy trinity" of British heavy rock - BLACK SABBATH and LED ZEPPELIN - Glover said: "Not really. I didn't actually know much about BLACK SABBATH. I thought 'Paranoid' was a great single; I loved that. But the depths of the albums I never really got into. ZEPPELIN I heard before I joined PURPLE - just within a couple of weeks. And I loved it - that first ZEPPELIN album blew me away and changed my thinking about music, actually."
He continued: "The word 'heavy' was being used a lot in the mid-to-late '60s - heavy music. I mean, [Jimi] Hendrix and CREAM were, sort of, paving the way, if you like. I thought 'heavy'… The band I was in before PURPLE, we thought 'heavy' was just having more equipment and playing louder. It's not that. [Laughs] It's [not] the same old stuff but louder. But I'd suddeny realized, when I listened to ZEPPELIN, especially 'Dazed And Confused' and 'How Many More Times', 'heavy' didn't mean loud and big; it was an attitude. That was the key. And right on the heels of that came meeting DEEP PURPLE. So it was a meeting of disparate things that all of a sudden I actually got the knowledge of where I'm going a little bit as opposed to just shooting in the dark."
Page doesn't get enough credit as a producer. Back in the day bands like LZ were called hard rock. Never hear that said anymore.

Robert even (for me) did beat Freddie when I saw both at Live Aid, don't remember Freddie but will never forget any time I saw Robert live, he's just that great (even at his worst, which is still better then anyone else)! Long time Beatle fan here (since I saw them in 4th grade on Ed Sullivan) and still have my very first 45, "She Loves You" on Swan & very first album (mono) "Introducing The Beatles", picked my favorite Beatle that night seeing Ed Sullivan (everyone did and talked about them for days after), the one in the middle, you know who he was but for those who weren't alive then... George!... that never has changed... RIP... regret, never saw him live!
Thanx Betsy! You know it takes nothing away from Freddie Mercury’s stunning vocals when I say I prefer Robert’s voice to his! I just prefer the spontaneity of Robert’s whole approach to singing!
Like I said in a previous video, I am a major Queen fan, and was grateful they came along to fill the void that was created the day Bonzo died! Mercury still is one of my favorite singer’s, but he sang from a more rehearsed and planned way, where Robert went more by feel.
With Freddie you always got what you already knew, and wanted to hear, and with Robert, you never knew quite what you were going to get! And I just loved that!
Modern rock n roll as we know today really started with The Beatles, especially on Ed Sullivan, 1964. Every kid wanted to be a rock star. That set everything in motion. Thousands of great bands were formed. Ozzy said it all started with The Beatles.
Yes, I remember seeing Beatles on Ed Sullivan! So exciting & George was my favorite! Also seen them in person in Atlantic City, NJ in 1964. Can’t say I heard them with all the screaming! I like Plant, but Freddie is my favorite. Remember watching Live Aid on TV. Queen at Wembley in London, had best set that day in my opinion. Unfortunately in Phila., to me Zeps performance was sub par. Plant not in best voice form & Page completely out of it on drugs. Only JPJ was on point. Not a good reunion IMHO. To bad they blamed Phil Collins for it all. But everyone has their favorite and is entitled to their opinion. Such great music! RIP Freddie, George & John
The only singer that came close to Robert Plant would be the late Chris Cornell.
I would have to say that your list here it a bit too British. Jimmy Page is definitely in the top three, but to leave out Eddie Van Halen who redefined rock guitar. His incredible technical capacity is unequalled. And the Southern boys from Lynyrd Skynyrd are wonderful. Johnny Winter was an incredible blues master as was Stevie Ray. Joe Perry is also spectacular, as is Slash.
And also Duane Allman of course.
Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen also great.

Love that performance Daltrey did with Queen at Freddie’s tribute concert! Thought he was much better than Robert Plant that night. Think by the looks on their faces, the remaining members of Queen also were impressed with his singing of I Want it All. Did it much justice.

My only concern was Roger was going to hit Brian May, the way he was twrilling that mic in the air!! Of course he didn’t, that was his trademark when he performed. So good. Great performance.

Love Freddie, but I think you might be right. Although, Freddie did hit some great high notes in Under Pressure with Bowie & Somebody to Love, Montreal. Plant is great though.

Ian Gillan has not gotten the attention he deserves as far as a rock singer goes. He was a much more raw and powerful singer with greater range than Plant. Having said that , given a choice on the proverbial stranded the Desert Island, I would hands down listen to Zeppelin over Deep Purple. As far as lyrics and Melody go I'd say Plant is a better Lyricist and master of Melody by far in my opinion . But live , Ian could consistently sing better without changing the melody.

That's why it was "The Houses of The Holy"- that was my masterpiece as a child. I felt that it was original...

You can even see his smirk when he does it! Watch his face carefully, as he deliberately chooses a harmony line instead of the root riff we expect of him! It’s almost as if it amuses him to just keep playing with the riff, never seeing any one riff or lead line as being complete or even worthy of repeating!
The guy is so much more interesting live! Just like Jimi Hendrix, if you ask me!

The Mahavishnu Orchestra and John McLaughlin make Page and Led Zeppelin look like amateurs, I thought Jimmy Page and Zeppelin were true virtuosos until I heard McLaughlin, he is the real virtuoso and Mahavishnu Orchestra took more chances than they could dream of, Birds of Fire is pure intensity and magic and great songs and I think it's fair to compare the two bands after all Page took lessons from McLaughlin.
I love McLaughlin! And though not my number 1 choice sits high on my list!

Virtuoso like Mclaughlin sold 1 million albums over his career...Led Zep sold between 200-300 Millions...Not on the same league at all...and if you think being a better musician allow you to make better music...well, you're wrong...

Ted Nugent would have to be one of the all time greats on guitar. At the same time Jimmy Page was putting together Led Zeppelin's first album Ted was doing some amazing things with the guitar in the band Amboy Dukes.
