Crimea: March of the Tatars

In one of history's most severe and efficient incidents of mass exile, the Tatars in Crimea were removed from their homeland by Stalin in 1944. Within just three days, 200,000 Tatars were forcibly deported. After spending 50 years in exile, the Tatars returned to their homeland in Crimea at the collapse of the Soviet Union, and have since felt generally protected under Ukrainian rule.
Following a fraudulent and illegal referendum earlier this year on whether to become part of Russia, Crimea was annexed by the Russian Federation - a move that brought back painful memories of persecution and oppression for the local Tatar community.
VICE News spent time with Tatars around the time of the commemoration of their exile, and found a community already under pressure from new Russian authorities. It’s unclear what their future will hold under Russian rule again, and many fear that history could repeat itself.

@Elif Stop spreading fake information. Simple Google search would be enough to tell you that‘s wrong. Why shouldn't Turks have big colored eyes? Although Asians have small brown eyes, in Central Asia, Kazakhs and other Turkic people are more likely to have big or colored eyes than Mongols and others. According to people, British people have white skin as milk; Russians have blue eyes as the azure sky; Scottish people have red hair as the fire; Indians have long hair as silk. Let me tell you a little secret. We have their all facial & hair features, more or less. Turks don't have a certain appearance, we have different eyes types and different skin colors. this is why we are unique. Some Turkic girls : ruclips.net/video/0BqEV1vkE1Y/видео.html

not all Tatars were Muslim - some were shamanistic (not many).
The muslim Tartars raided the Slavic lands gathering thousands of slaves (over 20,000?).
How far back in history do people go to pity or hold blame and why is one allowed sometimes and not the other?
Putin has no intention of evicting anyone and defended the Muslims the other day when he found out that the neo-nazis who caught those who were soldiers (maybe Chechens, idk) were being tortured.

You guys are so pathetic it makes me laugh hahahaha. Jon M yes leave the past in the past, the soviet deportation happened 70 years ago under Stalin's Soviet Union, leave that in the past. ***** Modern day Russians haven't harmed Crimeans, their suffering 70 years ago wasn't their fault as Stalin ordered it be done. Uchida itachi Indian reservations are perhaps some of the worst places ever to live. Everybody can receive money from the government, if you are white and don't have a job you can apply for foodstamps (money in the sense it is free food). Michael Karpp Hey dipshit, Stalin is dead and he ordered the deportation so stop saying Putin deported them to Siberia. estrom111 By your logic what happened a few hundred years ago was insignificant but what happened within the last 100 or so years is important. The deportation was 70 years ago, any modern day Russian alive back then was probably a child, not a government official working with Stalin. Wow you people failed to refute anything. hahahaha.

Crimea was Turkic before it was Slavic, Russians Colonized the region to make it more loyal to the Motherland, before it was apart of the Mongol Golden Horde, then became the Crimean Khanate, a Turkish Protectorate state, even France and England tried to help the Turks keep Crimea during the Crimean War, but that obviously failed.

The greeks established colonies there in the 5th century BC. The Tauri (believed to be Turkic) and Scytheans (Iranians) were already there at that time. Crimea was called Taurica, named by the Greeks after its Tauri inhabitants. Then came the Romans from 2nd BC till 10th BC when it became part of Kievan Rus. In 13th BC the Mongols took over. The Genoese and the Venetians had settlements along the coast. From Turco-Mongol rule, it became the Crimean Khanate protected by the Ottomans from 1441 till 1783 when it became part of the Russian Empire. Crimean Tatars became an ethnic entity under the Khanate and were a mixture of many turkic ethnic groups that have inhabited the area throughout the centuries. Crimean Tatars conducted slave raids into Russian, Ukrainian, and Polish territories. Slave trade was a cornerstone of Crimea's economy during the Khanate. At some point 75% of the population in Crimea was made up of slaves. Crimean Tatars would be raided by Zaporozhian Cossacks in return. Under the Russian Empire, the Crimean Tatars started to emigrate to the Ottoman Empire. Then came Stalin who starved the whole region to death and mass deported whatever was left of the Crimean Tatar, Greek, Armenian and Bulgarian populations. Anyway, anyone claiming ownership to that land will have to answer to the previous owner who in turn will need to answer to another and so on.

Well during the Crimean Tatar Slave trade of Circassians, millions of Circassians were enslaved by Crimean Tatars mainly through raiding but also forcing the Circassians which they achieved suzerainty over to give them many slaves every year, and giving thousands of slaves to the Crimean Khanate whenever a Crimean Tatar Khan ascended the throne. Most Circassians who were enslaved during the Circassian Slave Trade during the Ottoman , were enslaved by the Crimean Tatars. Like according to Ottoman records roughly 2 million Circassians were brought to the Ottoman Empire mainly from the Crimean Khanate slave Markets, with the number of Circassians being brought to the Ottoman Empire certainly higher than what the Ottoman records tell us. For people who brought enslave people in the Ottoman Empire to sell, would like to under report the number of enslave people they brought as to pay less taxes. Like the Crimean Khanate Slave Markets, the enslave Circassians their were primary enslaved by Crimean Tatars during their slave raids. More than 2 million Circassians were enslaved by the Crimean Tatars, with most the enslave Circassians being made into sexual slaves who had have sex with the Turkish Slave Owner who purchased them or die very cruelly, like disgustingly. It is also important to note that for every Circassian enslave by the Crimean Tatars through the raid, and brought too the Crimean Tatar Slave Market, which the Ottomans called the Avrat Pazari, which means Wife Bazaar, their were many other people who died in the raids, and few more who died on the way to the Slave Market
