In January, European Union restrictions on Romania and Bulgaria were lifted, meaning citizens of those countries were free to travel and work throughout the EU. This inspired anger in wealthier countries like the UK, where people anticipated a flood of migrants looking to take advantage of relatively generous welfare systems. This anger was directed most fiercely at the Roma.
Europe's largest ethnic minority - also known as gypsies - has long endured bigotry and abuse. This year, they've been a boon to rightwing politicians who've used them to garner support for anti-immigration policies and achieve significant electoral victories.
VICE News examines the so-called "Roma influx" by visiting a Roma community in northern England, then traveling to Romania to meet a group of Roma who have just been evicted from their homes and don't have the money to leave the country to seek out better lives.

Being a mother to early can limit Critical Thinking Skill Development. Because you never spend time thinking for yourself but for your child without a period of Self Independence. Making you dependent on your husband and parents for every life choice. Learning Critical Thinking taking risks then failing to reach some goals and getting in trouble for disobeying some common sense rules. Failure teaches as much as success but as long as you fail in a safe environment and not go off the deep end of dealing with the consequences. But mothers cannot Take Risks without worrying about how it affects their children.

@@jurjclooners829 Do you have evidence of any Roma kidnapping "white" babies? You often get rumours that even make the press. They invariably turn out to be bullshit. In WW2 tens of thousands of Roma babies & children from all over Europe were kidnapped, starved & tortured by Nazis & placed in concentration camps where they were gassed. Historians estimate that between 220,000 & 500, 000 Roma were killed.
Watch the video slowly and carefully, that's not what she said.
Will Wilberforce You weren't there when your grandmother was apparently sold. & she was obviously too young to know what happened..So who's story are you relying on?. So she wad sold to your great grandparents i presume? What kind of people would buy a baby? Almost as bad ad selling one..I wouldn't necessarily believe all stories that come down through families...
@Will Wilberforce There's a whole heap of crimes you've just described there..The worst being murder in a concentration camp. A crime where Roma were the victims. The second, your non gypsy grandfather sounds like a pedophile who has no problem with buying a virtual slave . Do you have any idea what conditions would make someone resort to selling a child? It's possible, even probable that starvation drove this action. Especially post WW1 Europe was a chaotic mess, & as usual the Roma were last on the list for any help. Sell a child to save her from starvation & the others too. Unfortunate but understandable...
It is also important to remember that the Roma dowry system can often look like a sale, & in that era it wasn't just gypsies who married their girls off at a young age. The age of consent in Germany & Austria is currently14 .
Diogo F that’s not even what was said. If you’re going to quote somebody at least use their words
There is a reason why the Roma are not well regarded by their neighbors. Many are fine people and mind their business but the overwhelming majority behave despicably. In Bucharest I witnessed Roma parents who would break their babies' limbs and let them heel with deformations in order to use them for begging hoping that others would give more with extra sympathy. In the subway, one of these kids was being paraded on all fours with a collar and a leash around his neck. This is not a story I heard from someone, this horrible spectacle was displayed in front of my very own eyes. Something is wrong with this. And it is not the state.
It’s their daft culture
@Ranger I witnessed the results of the dastardly deed. The child paraded in subway cars with the deformities already inflicted on the child. The locals informed me of this despicable habit of some Roma clans of using deformed kids for begging , often inflicting the deformities on healthy kids . I did not witness the act itself. If I was present , I do not believe that I could have just witness it without taking a 2x4 to the head of the adults that maimed the kid.
In the times of Austria-Hungary, austrian authorities often took the children of the gypsies away and send them to Austria to go to schools. After the WW1, this practice was seen as a human rights abuse and they were to be returned to their roma family members. I can see now why this was done
Why does the EU allow them to get away with that? I'm honestly baffled.

The Roma people have a nomadic history in Europe. When I was a child, a bunch of us would go into in nearby forests and would find them sitting at a fire pit next to horse drawn wagons. The Romas used to go around local villages stealing whatever they could find: chickens, food items, money and jewelry. My bedridden father was robbed by one very flashy Roma woman who danced for him and then asked for some change which he gave to her thereby disclosing the location of his cash stash. Im a Social worker in Germany and I work with many Roma children in social hotspots.
My observation is that the children have pure hearts and many of them love learning German or going to school here but of course there are some exceptions.
But sadly I also see that the Roma adults are completely different. They don’t behave according to our laws and just a few of them is interested in learning German or integrate. They are often criminal and not very „clean“. I think the term „Parallel society“ describes them well.
Tbh I think it’s mostly the failure of the German state. The state let in too many of them without controls and now it’s too difficult to integrate all of them.

There is DEFINITELY a substantial amount of discrimination that Roma face, BUT there have also been countless attempts towards integration, every single one of them so far have failed, uniformly in Western, Northern, Southern and Eastern Europe.
Saying that we shouldn't expect Roma to change their culture comes from a place of ignorance.
1, Roma use a clan system. There are clans that are traditionally specialized in music, jewel crafting etc. Then there are clans specialized in thievery, begging and other criminal activities. Of course we should demand they should these cultural traits.
2, In many Roma groups child marriages, bridal sales, loan sharking etc are also cultural traits. Of course we should demand they'd accept to change these habits.
3, In countries like Spain massive efforts are being made to keep Roma children in school, often practically bribing the parents with cash grants just to get them to keep their children in school. These efforts usually fail as girls are pulled from school at around 13-14 and are married off, and are usually pregnant and with child by 15-16.
Boys also leave school by ages 14-15, for varied and usually cultural reasons.
It's complicated really. We certainly should certainly come up with better integration schemes and make the effort of applying them. But the fact remains that it has to be reciprocal, the Roma need to accept the fact that they need to make certain changes to their culture.

Living in Italy it's quite easy to notice that Albanians, North Africans and Romanians, three minority groups that have only had a significant presence here for the last three generations, managed to integrate quite well. I personally know a lot of people from those descents and in most cases, especially when it comes to Albanians and Romanians, they can be indistinguishable from Italians of Italian descent as early as from their second generations, while it's not entirely unusual to hear first generation immigrants from those same communities speaking in the local dialect of the region they established themselves in. Romas, on the other hand, have been here for centuries, I also know quite a few of them personally since there are two Roma families who have been living in my hometown since the beginning of the last century and "their" houses (actually public housing) are in the street next to the one my parents live in. They go to public school, even though they usually are among the very worst students and always drop out in Middle school, they go to sunday school and local social gatherings and fairs, they are known by name by every member of the community, but they just won't integrate. They don't care, they don't want to, they don't have jobs and lament their alleged state of poverty, but at the same time flex their sports cars and expensive jewelry. Romas who want to integrate and pursue higher education are usually shunned by their community, the girls are withdrawn from public life as soon as they turn 14 or 16 and are married off to other Romas, the boys are usually quite violent and antisocial towards their peers. Unlike north Africans, Romanians and Albanians they seem to not be interested in engaging in social activities with other groups, they are never seen at gatherings with someone other than other Romas but at the same time they seem to know how to exploit the welfare state to its absolute peak performance. They are not infamous among Europeans just because we have collectively decided to hate on them, they simply never integrated and they mostly don't seem to be interested in integration at all. They simply seem to be different from every other minority group in that they don't do anything to better their own condition and that of their children. It sucks to say this because I know there are many of them that actually managed to integrate, and because I am a progressive and I absolutely hate xenophobic and racist outtakes on minority groups, but Romas are simply another problem altogether, I really don't know how else to put it.
This is really interesting
I remember I studied with a roma boy in Italy and he was very aggressive and violent and very closed off. He would scare people away who wanted to be his friend and would always disrespect the teacher. One day he brought a fake gun toy to school and of course my teacher confiscated it and he just went crazy. His father came to pick him up and he barely spoke Italian and after that incident, they just left the city. It was a crazy experience.

Yeah you can see the agenda from 100m away.
I come from Russia and throughout my grandma's life, my mom's life, and my childhood, we have experienced threats of being cursed and being threatened at knifepoint for money and jewelry, even in public squares. A lot of the "racism" you document here is cultural trauma and social exhaustion from being put into a perceived position of power over a people that instead refuse to follow public order and then act the victim. Like always there are the gems that try to make the best for themselves and their families, but when someone threatens you and your family at knifepoint or tries to sell you a baby for less than $500, you should really think about the bigger idea, not just pointing fingers and yelling, "racist!"

To immediately claim that entire communities are to blame for 'racism' is to also deny their negative experience with other communities. Lets be real, racism isn't usually about race, by that I mean skin colour. It is often about cultural differences, expectations of moral standards, hygiene and politeness/etiquette.

Don’t generalize I’m sure there are good Romani people
Well a Roma lady isn’t much of an adversary if she chose to be. Physically I mean. I’m glad you had a good experience but when I visited Kosice the relationship between the Roma and the locals was thousand times worse than anything we see here in the west. The entire Roma population lives in two Soviet sky scrapers a little Bit outside the city which they took over illegally that is connected by a single bus line which is regularly pelted with breeze blocks and debris and any attempt at providing services and education are tacitly declined by a communal show of violence against any well meaning outsider who dares set foot in their ghetto. It’s so odd how behaviour we detest and find unacceptable in our society all of a sudden needs polemic defence and external efforts of preservation just because it’s an exotic culture we have no right to pretend to understand.... Selling off your children as wives, normalising a parasitic lifestyle and sanctioning the dehumanisation of all non-Roma is terrible for them and the people living around them. The sad thing is that the core of the Roma culture consists of a separation between them and us so fundamental they prefer to live destitute lives and reject a productive subsistence lifestyle that it’s almost impossible to engineer positive change as an outsider. I’m just not going to defends culture like that, call me racist all you like. Sorry.
gфøglэ рlûš I just don’t know how to discuss and engage with that topic without generalising. Having to always preface by “not all:....” shouldn’t be requisite because if anyone thinks that all people of any group have the same issues about them and none of the group are deep thinkers or vary in their opinions then that anyone isn’t even worth talking to. There’s always a variety of characteristics in any people. Of course there are great Roma and there are great clans of Roma people that think differently. In my comment I wasn’t even generalising. I was talking about the Roma in Kosice and the Roma in Germany in two different ways. It’s impossible to discuss with one another in service of a better future for the Roma people if we can’t talk about the issues within their communities without being called bigoted. Fundamentally I’m not attacking the people I’m attacking the ideas and ideals which cause harm if they are made blueprint for action. I feel sorry for the kids that grow up in these cultures where pursuing a life outside our civilised society is a source of pride and their traditions define and interconnect all members within their society like cement. It’s nice to say don’t generalise and I agree with the sentiment but what is going on with these tribes is not good. It’s not good and we should be allowed to talk about what makes it not good otherwise nothing will ever change. ....
Wow this video tries to be sympathetic but instead really highlights all the problems with the Roma and the need to significantly restrict their immigration. Good job Vice.
That's usually what happens in Hungary is well. The media always tries to portray them as victims and the some of the Roma claim that nobody wants to hire them but that's just simply not true. I get it that some places might really not want to hire them due to their reputation but they could always find a job if they kept looking. The truth is that many of them simply don't want to work they rather steal, do illegal stuff or just live on welfare with half a dozen kids in poor conditions. Anybody who grew up among a lot of gypsies will tell you that only like 1 out of 100 is a decent person. And no sane person should label you as racist if you are somewhat afraid of them. Because in this case that's just being reasonable. We don't think they behave like this due to their genes but due the fact that most of them grow up with terrible parents, siblings and friends. Sometimes it's so bad that 9-10 year old kids are already willing to threaten you with a knife. And adult gypsies often commit such terrible crimes especially when under the influence of some drug for trivial things that it's completely inhuman. For example a few weeks ago a 40 something year old man stabbed a 25 year old guy to death because the guy didn't let him pet his dog on a tram. And a few years ago two drunktard had beaten a man to death because he didn't let them park their car at a place where it was not allowed to park to begin with. And the worst thing is that some "expert" come up with the conclusion that "It was possible that the illness the victim had for a while caused his death" even though he was completely fine before he was killed. When I've read these news it made my blood boil.
Dude did you see the conditions they live in? Those look like shots from the camps and slums of the war-torn Middle East. F outta here trying to justify their oppression

i love that there romani(idk) that say these points themselves but westerners just cant accept it
How come there is no Romanian in the comment section?? Well, I am Romanian and I would like to explain my view on the Roma people.
Living in Romania you encounter a Roma, or a “gypsy” (what they are called here) at least once in your life. I had an unpleasent experience with them too, some kid approached me on the street and then managed to steal my sunglasses from the top of my head.
Growing up in Romania, you are often times told to be cautious when seeing a Roma. It’s very rare to have a Roma person in school as your classmate, and when it does happen, most people marginalize the person.
When someone has a darker skin tone, some people start questioning whether that person might be Roma.
So to put it simply, most Romanians are racist when it comes to Roma people, some because they had bad experiences with them and other just because that’s what they were taught to be.
I don’t want to be a racist, so I never try to judge them based on what happened to me that one time in my life. There are plenty of people out on the street who beg or steal and they are white.
Yes the argument that Roma people are given chances multiple times but manage to stay in the same life conditions because they choose to do so could be made. But after so many years of being marginalized and discriminated, they have probably started to hate us too, and prefer to remain in the same conditions they are used to, rather than try to live among us, the ones who marginalized them in the first place. And then that’s what the parents teach their kids, and then that’s how another generation repeats history and so on.
And while I understand that having one unpleasant experience with them might make you cautious, don’t we all have bad experiences with other races, including our own, too?
There will always be two sides of the story. People who met a great Roma person who changed their perspective on them, or people who had a horrible experience with Roma, which made them have a bad opinion. So I believe it all comes down to perspective, and I also do think that anyone who says anything generalizing the Roma people by just one or a couple of bad interactions is essentially racist.
I believe until we truly truly make a huge effort towards helping them, we won’t see much change, and that’s mostly because we put them in that position over a such long period of time when no one did anything for them
As a romani person myself, I don't think I've ever heard such an amazing definition from a non-romani person. This is amazing. Thank you I wish more people were like you

Yep as usual and paired with the rise of racism in Europe there you have a recipe for a disaster
I'm living in a rural part of Switzerland. So far I've only had one direct contact to a gypsy group. A few years ago there was a huge European gathering (I think it was a wedding, not sure though) of gypsies supposed to take place right next to our village. They rented a large festival area nearby with toilets, showers, drinking water and a sheltered dining area. When the first people arrived we were showing them the place explaining to them the rules and what we expected them to do before they leave. They were VERY nice people. At least that's what I thought. On the morning of the fourth day we were supposed to meet with them again. Checking if everything is in order and clean as we had agreed upon before.
I was as if struck by lightening. There litteraly was shit everywhere exept for inside the toilets. On the paths, the tables, the benches, the floor, in the lavatory, the showers, on the parking lots EVERYWHERE. On top of that there was garbage on the floor, in the nearby fields, the small stream was congested with litter. Of course everybody had left by the time we arrived. Yes they had payed for the place on the first day but it costed more than three times that to clean it up again afterwards.
Such an experience makes it VERY hard not to become prejudiced against them. I would never judge a gypsy man or woman only on grounds of what I have experienced back then but such previously unimaginable things like this are very hard to forget.
Stfu prick I’m part Roma I’m kale everyone fucking hates u if are kale it’s just a blame game
@@Hash_thc Maybe people wouldn't hate you if you took the poo to the loo
This is how non white countries are, you are welcome.
i once saw kid begging for food and when he recived it mother stole it and ate it like wild animal, they would always begg for money and they were determent to get atleast 5kn
I once saw non Europeans being strategically and systematically prosecuted by Europeans but complaining the oppressed aren't growing
My sister is a waitress and said when they come into the restaurant, they are dirty and let kids run around everywhere and don't want to pay for the food and make a mess
That must be hard for business for sure! Also, a little unsafe if there are unruly people . I mean I see them/ notice them the most whenever I go to Italy. Especially one time on the “city” train ( which is not a nice train at all and it’s dirty but I didn’t know🤷♀️)from Naples to Amalfi ( never take it lol take a bus instead) but on the train they have little children come up to you to beg for money while the mom goes around. I mean it’s horrible to see a child beg.the sad thing is these people for generations never seem to improve their situation- they have generational poverty. I don’t really understand if they just don’t want to work or the countries they are living in are keeping them from working and just want to kick them out as illegals
Omg, I am from Slovakia. I used to go to school with few roma kids, they had a chance to lear but never did, girls as young as 15 ended up pregnant.. They never learned anything, they don't want to work, they just sreal, beg and go from bin to bin looking for scraps. They love the nomadic life. Just do whatever they feel like on a day to survive just no responsibility, commitment or progress..
true theres also drunk cigans in bratislava train station who assaults people for years noone has done anything about it
Nobody hates them for their identity. Rather it is for their actions. So no racism here. If they stop thieving, begging, being generally anti social, shouting all the time, actually getting educated and working. we would all like them
Like I said in my comment, they need a "reset". Some of them are good, hardworking people though.
@@christinakaur8766 unfortunately not the majority
Maybe if people gave them a chance to work they could stop begging so yes it's all based of racism. They try to get jobs but unfortunately people in Europe don't give them the opportunity because of discrimination and stereotype. " Nobody hates them for their identity " is rather ignorant
@@Letik3x In Spain, we give them jobs but they still prefer to live however they want to. So they just live from the money Spain gives them to integrate, believe me It isn't racism but when they call someone a payo (non romaní) and discriminate them because that or when they steal is difficult to love them. PD: I live in a bad place and it's full of them so i am talking by experiencie
@@Letik3x there have been programmes in multiple European countries giving them free housing and education the results have been very disappointing
They’re not all bad people, my coworker is a gypsy and he’s actually a really hardworking man working to put food on the table for his family and a roof above their head
Be careful Gypsy is a slur
@@artisticwafflesnora9973 a slur they've rightfully earned
nacanacoo wow you’re not even trying to o hide you’re racist
Nobody says they’re all bad. The academic guy saying we don’t ask any other people to change their culture is incorrect. When your culture includes your people breaking the law then simply requiring them to obey what all other people do shouldn’t be decried as racist. Just because something is culture or tradition doesn’t make it alright all of a sudden. Underage weddings are indefensible irrelevant of it being part of their identity.

Romania were fascist in ww2 even

Turk Means Strong! Original Rom people are 250000 only....
Rest of them are tsigan....
Roma came from India.... tsigan are completely different from Roma people... ( a educated Roma told me this all and he doesn’t need to lie )
At the train stations in Italy, there are cops who shoo them away from trying to pickpocket tourists. They stand on the freeways at the toll plaza begging for change. The live in really disgusting conditions and dont seem to care. They are a very strange people.
I think it's easy to judge as we've been afforded education and a good upbringing but to call them strange doesn't feel right. What's strange to you might be normal to them. I'm not saying what they do is right but I have sympathy for those living in poverty as you are a product of your environment it's hard to break the cycle. Doing what their ancestors have taught them to probably get by
@@sarahlondon1267 They live in caravans and leave lots of trash around it while wearing filthy clothes, yet they have Mercedes cars and Rolex watches. I don't know how you don't consider this to be strange.
@@spicy9840 Your comment just reiterated my point in hand. What's strange for you may be normal to them. You're only looking at the surface but not questioning or trying to understand why people do the things they do. You observe and make a judgement without using critical thinking or analysing how and why the way they are. Maybe try and be less judgemental and you'll get your answers
@@sarahlondon1267 Yeah good luck understanding the logic behind their behavior then. Naive.
@@spicy9840 I already understand. I already analyse things without bias and form views from a outside perspective. If anything I feel sorry for some of their behaviours and practices but I dont judge them for it. In fact I feel sorry for anyone who places more value on materialistism then their soul. We both do things which people may not agree with, however we may deem these things as right or morally correct. Who gives us the right to judge? Do you think you're superior to these people, or better than them so that gives you the right? You've never lied, cheated, manipulated yourself out of a situation, moreover you've never done anything bad in your life? You're the one who needs to reflect dude. Going through life judging the less fortunate. Whether that be less fortunate in wealth. Whether that's people who commit crimes or whether that be people that wear rolex while looking dirty. You haven never been in their circumstance, so you do not know what may be normal to them. Fortune can be defined on wealth through a shallow basis or defined through conscious living. They obviously place value on things with high monetary value and not some approved societal norms. There environment of them being outcasts for 100 of years probably had something to do with this. Most people in this world are shallow, what makes them different? They obviously aren't taught about the value of cleanliness from childhood. It's not hard to comprehend. I hope you figure that out one day.
Honestly they are weird group, while there are actually plenty of gypsies who work normally, stereotypes in this case also are quite accurate.
And it's just super weird how they just go on for generations without ever integrating or changing much.
Normal is a lie spread by idiots, every one is different, weird….
Look at our history we were enslaved for 500 years hunted down all over Europe becuase we had darker skin and were evil in the eyes of churches we never got a prober chance
Mostly Gypsy people were traders and helpers of traders. Some people migrate because or famine in North & western India.
In some places you will find it written that "The upper caste people of India have come from Europe and the gypsy people are the people of the lower caste of India"; It was only propaganda which was first used by the invaders of India and later by some politicians.
how is it that all the advocates of roms do not live close to them?
I know right.. They have no idea.
I use an extension that shows users' flags next to their comments and I've noticed that the people who live in countries where there are lots of gypsies almost always say that gypsies constantly do awful things, whereas the people who live in countries where you'll probably never meet a gypsy are saying that those claims are lies made by ignorant racists.

+chunkycake101 That's a bunch of liberal/Commie bullshit. Higher taxes and a much higher cost of living are a direct result of Socialist policies. It's no coincidence that the most liberal cities have the highest taxes and the highest cost of living. Damn near all numbers are fudged by the Commies.
Can someone explain to my why they don’t just get jobs, be functioning members of society & take care of themselves??
how can you get a job when people automatically think your a horrible person just because of your ethnicity? and it's hard to take care of yourself when your poor and don't have any resources. they don't choose to be in poverty, they are forced into it
Businesses in my country are begging for workers. Any Gypsy willing to go to work, on time, every day will be welcomed. One of the Roma’s problems is a lack of work ethic. Another prob is a sense of entitlement. They would rather not work.

My mother, who was born in 1898, lived in a small Iowa town & remembers a call going out, “the gypsies are coming “. Everyone rushed around taking clothes off the line, locking stock in the barn, clearing away as much as they could. In the US, that long ago, their reputation was already well established.
And my great-grandparents were Roma from Poland move here in the 1910's and I'm glad they moved here. Because otherwise my grandmother would have never become a nurse because of all the racism. And because of what you're saying that's the reason why my great-grandparents had to hide the fact that they were Roma because of racist idiots like yourself. But my great-grandparents work their asses off and so did my grandmother and all her siblings and so does my mother and so do I and so to my brothers. By the way there's over a million of us in the United States.

Because they don't do it in the USA, them main reason is that they do not follow their traditional style of life there. I remember it from my own life, not grandmother's, but the problem is that your linen, clothes and stuff would have disappeared if you hadn't hid it.
