Great video! My takeaway is that you “can” use Dawn and it won’t hurt your paint or sealant. But should you use Dawn? No because there are better soap options out there. Using the best tool for the job is what makes the most logical sense.
Yvan Lacroix did say that dish soap won't damage waxes/sealants but rather they leave behind a layer of surfactants that will eventually clog up the car's surface over time making it seem like waxes/coatings have failed. If that's the case then it might be better to use a baby dish-soap as they are designed to rinse cleaner without leaving any residue behind. In fact it's probably best for everyone including adults to use baby-dish soap instead of regular dish soap in general.
@@TheBreakfastLover I can't vouch for all dish detergents out there, but Dawn rinses clean. I've tested this and there is nothing left behind. Growing up in the 60s and 70s we used dish soap to wash our cars, granted the paints were different back then but it never hurt anything, great video Frank 👍😁
Great comparison/review video Frank, as always. I actually have used Dawn as a "decontamination" soap on my vehicles for many years prior to actual specific "decon" soaps were offered for sale. I never, not once have had a problem using Dawn dish soap. I have no idea whether it stripped off any waxes or sealants I was using, but I always reapplied my protection of choice at the time right afterwards so it really never was an issue whatsoever. Again, this was over 30+ years ago and it was what we had back then before the golden age of detailing arrived with the thousands upon thousands of detailing products that are readily available on the internet these days. I literally could fit all my detailing supplies in a 5 gallon bucket back then! No joke. This was way before I could afford all the products I get now days. I was a teenager when I started detailing my vehicles, friends' and family vehicles, etc. I usually used dish soap and then I waxed my vehicles with Meguiar's Cleaner Wax in the maroon tin (which is still available to this very day although it might be a different formulation to what we had back 45 years ago). I then hit the tires with Armor All (yes, I did use Armor All back in the day! LOL), wiped out the interior with a bottle of Fantastik from under the sink, vacuumed the vehicle, and finished with doing the windows with Windex! 3 chemicals and I called it a day. My vehicle's always got comments on how good they looked! Oh, and I used old terry cloth towels and a terry wash cloth that had formerly been used in the house! Worked just fine! My point is, far too many people (including many enthusiasts and professional detailers) take what is said over RUclips and Instagram as gospel! You can get a car clean and looking halfway decent with very minimal equipment and chemicals. You don't need a RIGID detailers vacuum, you can use your vacuum from inside your house if it has a hose on it that allows you to do it that way. Did it for YEARS that way with the house vacuum and an extension cord. You can buy a cheap $30 detailers "kit" from Wally world or wherever you choose and get good results. There are so many detailing products for sale now days it's absolutely mind boggling. And you don't know who or what reviews to trust on the internet. I have been suckered into buying so many detailing products over the years it's not even funny. Truly, I have spent THOUSANDS of dollars on detailing products I really don't need. It's almost a mental illness because I can't break myself from buying detailing products! My wife probably thinks I am nuts for buying all this crap (and maybe I am) because I keep on buying more crap I don't need. I am always thinking of ways to MINIMIZE my detailing purchases and make the whole detailing experience more streamlined and use (and buy) LESS products. I would personally rather buy a great product that works great and is reasonably priced. For example, we buy all these chemicals which do 10 different things on the interior of the vehicle. Wouldn't a great all purpose cleaner (APC) be a better option? That is why I love POL STAR so much from Koch Chemie, because it can tackle 90% of the interior with one chemical. Then a $4 bottle of Stoner Invisible Glass for the glass and that's it for the interior! Works beautifully on all the interior surfaces except the glass. So two chemicals only for the inside. Then on the outside, get one good soap, a bucket, and a wash mitt, and again, you pretty much have what you need for the exterior other than a good cleaner wax which of course isn't going to do any paint correction, but is adequate for the majority of people in the world to do their cars and the cleaners in the wax do help to remove minor oxidation and it cleans up the paint fairly well. Same $4 bottle of Stoner glass on the outside! You get my point. I crack up when I see some of the enthusiasts who have every single chemical and accessory known to man for detailing their one car! Their CABINETS ARE FULL OF DETAILING PRODUCTS! They could open up a small detailing supply company they have so many different chemicals and tools to clean one or two vehicles they own. THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS worth of equipment, probably costing more than the darned car they are detailing. I get it, don't get me wrong, as I too love new detailing products and equipment, just as much as the next enthusiast or detailer. I really do, but as I age, I am looking for ways to streamline and REDUCE the amount of products and chemicals I have. I can afford them, even the high end stuff like Polishangel (a brand I absolutely love but is so gosh darned expensive), but the big question everyone should be asking themselves is: "DO WE NEED ALL THIS STUFF?". Some would argue yes I guess, but DO WE? I would love to see a video in the future on a topic like 'Do you need the expensive and extensive line of detailing products to get the same results as using value based products like a good soap, cleaner wax, and APC. Of course, some will argue you shouldn't use an APC inside the cabin, which is ridiculous as long as you dilute correctly. What do they think most interior cleaners are anyway? Most likely, a relabeled APC that's already diluted and colored a different color or something. It would be an interesting argument. Then do a direct comparison in the same video using all the various specialty chemicals and products available today for detailing a vehicle. Literally, there are probably 40 specialty chemicals to clean almost every single part of your vehicle so it would be an interesting topic. Thank you for your interesting and informative videos sir. I'm glad you like the no BS no hype recommendations of products! Talk soon my Poland friend and thank you for being a top contributor to my channel. 🤝
Well done!!. I always found it to be b.s. that dawn would damage clear coat and even sceptical of it removing sealants or coatings. Does is dry out plastics? Maybe but with good inexpensive dedicated car soaps readily available there's really not much reason to use it.
Hi Frank 👋, I really appreciate all the work you do to bring us awesome videos, before I started buying detailing products, I started by using dawn dish soap and never had any issues. I think it’s ok to use it my own opinion. But like always, keep up the good work.🤝🤜🤛 👍 👍
Biggest thing about this is using common sense. It's strong but at a proper dilution it's good if you're in a pinch. Obviously it's better to use a product that is vehicle specific but this isn't an awful alternative. Great video man👍🏽
@@chrisbradley3224 oh absolutely, non auto specific chemicals should always be used carefully, but for those super caked on dressings, a degreaser would’ve been great but power wash was in hand and it did great 👍🏽
Frank the Myth Buster. Great video, Dawn’s not my thing everything has its place and I’ll keep using it in the kitchen. Maybe ADS should come out with “Dish+” for the kitchen, would love that scent while doing dishes. Lol
Bravo Frank super vidéo personnellement quand je fait les vehicules au printemps de mes client j’utilise toujours down sa enlève bien la crasse lolll lâche pas 👍
No!!! Not Dawn! Anything but Dawn! 😂 Like I said in the first video, Dawn infamy isn't really warranted. There are better soaps out there from a performance and cost standpoint but I have zero doubts about using Dawn in a pinch.
Now the real mindblowing trick. I have found that Dove sensitive bar soap brings sealants back nice and crispy almost as well as water spot remover. Dawn and liquid soaps tend to clog them, but the Dove bar soap is like magic. I don’t understand the effect myself.
@@magouliana32 oh it’s fine on glass. It’s just not very efficient I’d not use it professionally or anything. It’s like washing yourself, get a good lather, lol
@@matsudakodo It rinses very clean, at least this particular soap does. I first discovered this on my acrylic shower mirror and glass which I coated with Armour Quartz ceramic coating.
hey man thanks for watching, it seems to leave a bit of residue that sticks to the wax and sealant, not so much on the true ceramic coating. Just rewatch the water behaviour careful from beginning to end. Cheers
Just saying 30+ years dawn still works for me and not one of my customer's did i have to do a new paint on there cars. " But what do I know I'm just a carwash boy"
@@Detailing_Dogma yeah i know, just saying it wouldnt be a great result on single stage. Some of the newer white work Utes here in Australia are single stage
The problem with DAWN and like is that they will heart sealant (remove some) and you need much more water to fully removed from the paint. Also, it's not as slick as some other dedicated car shampoo.
Salut Frank!
A bientot JM ✌️
Yep. So much misinformation. Dawn is just a good degreasing soap with lower lubricity than most car soaps. I use Dawn on my test panel and it works fine but sometimes leaves a bit of hydrophilic behavior, prob surfactant film, on ceramic coatings temporarily.
So would not washing those cars at all. Back then if you washed them with a rag and just water, the paint color would be left on your rag afterwards. Dawn will work just fine, and will actually remove stuff better than these gentle car wash chemicals. Truth be told, the stuff coming off the road after a rain, bug guts, bird poop, and whatever else just sitting on your paint is much more harmful than Dawn.
The reason people say not to use dawn is that it doesn't have any protection ("wax") or lubricant in it, so it isn't a good soap on its own like most people do when washing Thier cars. I don't have an issue with it if you then go on to apply a protection coat in whatever form you choose
The issue isn’t the stripping power, it’s the lack of lubricity. Even if using a pre-wash, the car would normally have some muck on it, when doing a normal wash with dish soap. It doesn’t have the lubricity or encapsulation to help keep scratches away when washing cars in the real world. It has been long known that dish soap doesn’t strip waxes or sealants and that they shouldn’t be used as a strip wash. With this test, each wash was done on a clean car. The scratch prevention of the dish shampoo isn’t tested and THAT is the big problem with it - far more swirls.
Idk man, dishes tend to slip out of my hands when using Dawn at the sink. If concerned, just put a few drops into your normal car wash rather than using 100% Dawn.
HEy man, appreciate your feedback. Just to add to your comment as I have worked quite a bit with Dawn, I have found actually to be pretty slick and wouldnt scratch more than other car soaps, I cant speak for the ''encapsulation'' but it worked great as pre-soak against dedicated pre-wash products in my prewash #2 video ruclips.net/video/GCoLThx2NHk/видео.html. If you watch the V1 of dawn video I even use the inspection light to check out the swirl factor ruclips.net/video/T126V37hvjU/видео.html. Seriously everything will mare to some degree, espcially overtime, most daily driver would benefit from a polish every 2 to 3 years regardless. Using a pre-washer and a solid pre-wash/pre rinse does 90% of the ''swirl reducing work''. Glad to have you on the channel cheers ✌️
@@Detailing_Dogma it feels slick for sure, but it’s primarily designed to clean ceramic plates and pots and pans with a basic sponge/scrubber - swirl protection is not part of the design process. This should perhaps be your next video - making or prevention of swirls in a controlled environment, using a proven slick car soap and Dawn to see exactly what it leaves. Black paint and a microscope would be useful for testing this. Keep up the good work. Love the investigations. 🤘
Hey, as a professional detailer of 20+ years. Please allow me to clear some things up and quiet the noise. It's not the product, it's the car washer. I find it funny that people will down Dawn. But, are the same people who use SuperClean, Purple Power, All Purpose Cleaner's, etc. The chemicals at tunnel car washes are just as bad. All will degrade or diminish your clear coat with repeated use over time. Especialy, if not diluted correctly. It's not just what you use, it's how you "use Dawn" that's important. May people don't understand how to use Dawn. Less is safer. Any soap must have some bite in order to be an effective cleaner. If not, it's just plain water. Just like people think more foam equal better cleaning power. Well, over the years, i've used Dawn on car paint, wheels, engine and glass with no issues, from daily drivers to high-end vehicles. It's about cleaning, preserving and protecting the clear coat for as long as possible. You can ruin your clear coat, wax or sealants just by letting your ride sit outside uncovered in bad conditions. - TCD, y'all.
I'm curious what, if anything, had been done to the car prior to this experiment? Is this raw, original clear coat or did it have anything applied in the past, ceramic or otherwise? There could be a chance you got down to this layer and something applied for the test did get removed? I ask because I'm really surprised about the Meguiar's, I've used dish soap to remove Zaino in the past and it worked really well - went from beading easily to pure sheeting with no beading at all. I always assumed it was because the dish soap did indeed remove the wax. I'm just "thinking out loud", I am not being contrary to the test and in fact really appreciate it, as well as you, your videos, and everything else. Just an honest question. I've seen it myself, and in other videos as well, maybe it's "some" waxes that can be removed? Regardless, I certainly agree it's safe for the pain and clear coat, never a question about that.
Actually the dawn didn’t remove your sealant. What it did is leave a temporary film that is hydrophilic and masks the beading of your sealant. I tested Dawn at many dilutions on a test panel and this is what I observed. It can remove wax sometimes but that’s it. It does “clog” sealants for a bit but it’s temporary.
Hey Greg thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate the way you put out your comment, in a very respectful way. To your question I have ''polish'' or removed everything on the paint, there was no coating on this car other than a few quick detailer spray sealant. I verified the water behaviour after the Bola Paint cleanser, it was as flat as it can get. For the Meguiars wax it started to get beat up quite a bit by the wash #15 or so I'd say at the end its still there and sheeting but got it's hair knockoff for sure. The alcohol prep before the last inspection helped to remove some of the Dawn residue though. Lastly yes it's all original clear coat from 2016 other than the roof. Let me know if there's anything else. Thanks for being part of this channel.
btw this meguairs wax wont last more than 4 to 6 weeks outside in the real environnement but has proven to have some chemicals and surfactants resistance.
are you ushering a new DAWN car washing? is there anything to GAIN from this? does this content bring you JOY? after watching those suds CASCADE down the car it left a nice FINISH, seriously though thank you for bringing this subject to the SUNLIGHT 😆🐿️💨
I imagine it probably could, if someone just used it constantly without applying a wax, sealant, or coating to rejuvenate the paint. Maybe not the Dawn alone, but the combination of Dawn with the elements. It would be the same as using an APC and not following up with rejuvenating the surface. Basically for those that know how to use it, there isn’t any harm.
Before even watching video I will say it takes away the wax. It won’t hurt paint , I never heard that. But it’s meant to clean the dishes and whatever is on them. Why is this even a discussion. Let the dummies use dawn if they want. My cousin uses dawn and that’s it. Could care less about any protection or wax. If you care about your vehicle then use the right stuff. That simple. Car wash is so damn cheap I don’t understand , lol. What about 25 cents to wash.
My paint is breaking down despite doing everything to protect and maintain it. Why ? Because it’s a Toyota and all cars similar age with pearl white paint are failing!!!! Toyota cars are great, paint is crap! 💩
Hey Cotton, you're right white toyota is brutal, some reports outhere they still use single stage paint for white. Honda is pretty cheap as well, paint chips will rust in matter of couple months. Cheers

Also someone said in the comments about a test between Gyeon Cancoat and Tac Moonlight (never used Tac bcs we don't have it in EU) and is it better than quick detailers and sealants, a great idea indeed and right up your video style my man! Cheers from Poland!
HEy Vic thanks for the feedback, good read and very helpful. The channel is still a work in progress but right now I feel im entering in a different stage after many months of work. I'm glad you like the no BS no hype recommendations of products! Talk soon my Poland friend and thank you for being a top contributor to my channel. 🤝
@@Detailing_Dogma It's pure pleasure Frank! Keep it up brother! Your channel will grow, i know it will.
Well done!!. I always found it to be b.s. that dawn would damage clear coat and even sceptical of it removing sealants or coatings. Does is dry out plastics? Maybe but with good inexpensive dedicated car soaps readily available there's really not much reason to use it.
Exactly Daniel, couldnt have said it better, thank you!
Hi Frank 👋, I really appreciate all the work you do to bring us awesome videos, before I started buying detailing products, I started by using dawn dish soap and never had any issues. I think it’s ok to use it my own opinion. But like always, keep up the good work.🤝🤜🤛 👍 👍
Thank you Mario, thanks for being here everyweek. Loyal subscribers like you helps me keep going and be consistent. Cheers ✌️
Biggest thing about this is using common sense. It's strong but at a proper dilution it's good if you're in a pinch. Obviously it's better to use a product that is vehicle specific but this isn't an awful alternative. Great video man👍🏽
Couldnt have said it better my friend. Thanks for putting it so simple. Cheeers ✌️
dawn power wash is actually fantastic for removing caked on old tire dressings 👍🏽
@@FrankoDetails Powerwash is something totally different and more powerful than a simple detergent, just be aware.
@@chrisbradley3224 oh absolutely, non auto specific chemicals should always be used carefully, but for those super caked on dressings, a degreaser would’ve been great but power wash was in hand and it did great 👍🏽
@@FrankoDetails yep I just noticed you said tire lol, I’m sure it works well and is safe on tires. Makes me slightly nervous on paint but not tires.
Cancoat vs Moonlight and other ~1 year coatings video when?! VS why to use them over something like griot's 3in1
That's fantastic idea, i'm taking notes, thank you ralkros. ✌️
Yes, and how does these "old guards" fare compared to all these new fangled products.
Frank the Myth Buster. Great video, Dawn’s not my thing everything has its place and I’ll keep using it in the kitchen. Maybe ADS should come out with “Dish+” for the kitchen, would love that scent while doing dishes. Lol
Haha Steve Dish+ is so good, Im with you I would take ADS scents while washing my dishes, 10/10 dish experience. Cheers brother thank you
No!!! Not Dawn! Anything but Dawn! 😂 Like I said in the first video, Dawn infamy isn't really warranted. There are better soaps out there from a performance and cost standpoint but I have zero doubts about using Dawn in a pinch.
Thanks for the feedback! ✌️
Now the real mindblowing trick. I have found that Dove sensitive bar soap brings sealants back nice and crispy almost as well as water spot remover. Dawn and liquid soaps tend to clog them, but the Dove bar soap is like magic. I don’t understand the effect myself.
How do you use it ? Do you dissolve a piece in warm water ?
What does it do to glass
@@magouliana32 I’m not recommending it necessarily lol but I just dissolve it in warm water and rub it on by hand.
@@magouliana32 oh it’s fine on glass. It’s just not very efficient I’d not use it professionally or anything. It’s like washing yourself, get a good lather, lol
Bar soaps are where soap scum films come from...I can't imagine how this would work.
@@matsudakodo It rinses very clean, at least this particular soap does. I first discovered this on my acrylic shower mirror and glass which I coated with Armour Quartz ceramic coating.
Thank you for such a cool video.
Thank you for taking the time to let me know ✌️
I heard its great for cleaning off coatings and sealant like a strip wash. Is that true?
hey man thanks for watching, it seems to leave a bit of residue that sticks to the wax and sealant, not so much on the true ceramic coating. Just rewatch the water behaviour careful from beginning to end. Cheers
Just saying 30+ years dawn still works for me and not one of my customer's did i have to do a new paint on there cars. " But what do I know I'm just a carwash boy"
Nothing beats real world experience, thank you brother, glad to have you on the channel. ✌️
do you spray it out of a foam cannon?
Try it on single stage paint for a few months and see how you go
single stage was in the 90's brother, unless you own a Toyota. But seriously maybe down the road I can get a panel and do that for you.
I appreciate your feedback thank you!
Will shampooing with Alberto VO 5 25× make my hair fall out😂.
If you did this to an older enamel or lacquer paint job without clear, it would dull the hell out of it.
Like cars for 30 years ago.
Thanks for feedback.
what was the paint polish prep product? Looks cool !!
It's from Gyeon.
paint cleanser tinyurl.com/jy7r4ew8 nice to see you again Joshua!
*I use Chemical Guys Car Wash on my Dishes, Its Mild!*
HAha very good brother
It's just a degreaser with a ph of 9, what's the big deal? ty
Glad you liked it ✌️✌️
i think the price of Dawn scares sales reps the most.
Haha, thanks for tuning in my friend!
Welcome back Sir
Thank you John! ✌️
Great video. 👍🏽
Thank you! 👍 Appreciate it!
The reason people say not to use dawn is that it doesn't have any protection ("wax") or lubricant in it, so it isn't a good soap on its own like most people do when washing Thier cars. I don't have an issue with it if you then go on to apply a protection coat in whatever form you choose
Thanks for the feedback dude, I actually find dawn to be quite slick but that's subject for another video! Cheers
@@matsudakodo I'm just not gonna use Dawn to wash my cars.
Test baby shampoo next! 😃
any particular reason why?
@@Detailing_Dogma Hopefully it'll go as viral as your Dawn Dish Soap video did. 😁
Why would anyone think Dawn will strip clear coat when people wash dishes with their bare hands?
Because logic isn't these people's strong suit.
It's legend out there, it's not caustic or solvent, maybe if you use it pure no less water it can damage some stuff we can try it out later.
Amen brother, couldnt agree more. Thanks for checking it out!
Is there anything more we need to know about this, or is that ALL?
@@matsudakodo 😆😆😆 …. NICE! 👍🏽
Thank you Frank, love the humour. ✌️
Only in USA they think dish-soap will ruin ur clearcoat. 😂🤦🏻♂️
@@laxbeach2381 would be crazy tho. Have to admit, these paints lately are rly shit. 🙈
Yeah, I agree clear coat is essentially nothing anymore, just a very thin layer.
I hope you watched it all!
@@Detailing_Dogma I did and I did see the results and that it did not hurt the finishes. But I will still use car wash , good video. 👍
Cheers
Because Dawn doesn’t destroy ceramic coating or harm the clear coat layer, doesn’t mean using it isn’t moronic.
exactly.
First!!!!
