This was super helpful as my ballasts didn't match and had exactly this configuration. While the diagram on the ballast seemed clear, it was a mess of wires up there. It was super helpful to see you do it! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful.
Very cool. I came home for the big box store with the right ballast, but I was stumped by the new one having two blue wires. I was *this close* to calling our electrician to have three new LED fixtures installed to replace our T12 fluorescents when I stumbled onto your video.
God bless the internet. In the old days, I would've gone to the library hoping to find a periodical (for you young folks, thats a magazine) that had an article addressing this subject. Thank you for posting this.

Thanks CJ. I appreciate the kind words. I am glad the video helped. Have a great day.
Bravo! Finally a simple and easy to follow ballast changeout video, thank you.
Glad we could help. Thanks for watching.
I tryed for two weeks multiple sources how to wire this ballast, even the tech where the ballast was distributed. You are the only people that new what you were talking about. A very big thank you. Charlie san antonio
Glad we could help.
Great explanation on the extra blue wire for this ballast! This is an exact match to what I’m doing! Thank you again!
glad it was helpful.
Excellent video with very clear instructions on the colors and great steady camera work. Unlike some of the other jerky, mumbling out of focus and useless attempts I have seen. Thanks a million!!
Thank you for the nice comment. Glad we were able to help.
After a week of research, I found your video. Great explanation and I finally understood what you were saying. My old ballast (45 yrs. old) only had four wires, Black, white, red, blue. The first ballast I bought had 8 wires including the yellow. I could not figure it out, but after watching your show, I realized I had the wrong new ballast. I went and bought the correct ballast and now everything is working. One suggestion: show a written diagram showing what you mean, it will help those of us who have trouble remembering things.
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for the tip about the diagram.
Clear, concise, to the point. Job was simple. You've save us all a lot of grief and potential money! Merci Beaucoup!
De rien. We are glad it was helpful. Have a great day.
Thank you for the easy to follow directions for replacing an older ballast with a newer one.
You’re welcome
Thank you for this clear and concise video. I need to replace the 50 year old ballast for our twin bulb F96T12 fixture in our bathroom and this video saved me a ton of money and time.
Awesome! Glad our video was helpful.
Yes Sir, Thank God for guys like you who know electrical so guys like me don't get zonked! All worked well after the changeout. Thank You.
You're very welcome! Glad you got it working.
Totally helpful. Had this exact wire setup and the instructions that come with the new ballast are useless. Thanks so much!
Awesome! Glad it was helpful.
This video was a life saver. Was wondering why my new ballast had two blues when there was only one blue on the old one. Thank you! Subscribed
Glad it was helpful.
Been looking for this vid for days...finally figured out the right combination of keywords to find it. Thanks for sharing!! The T8 vids are all over the place, but the T12 was tough to find...and they seem to be rather different.
Thank you. Glad it was helpful. What were the correct keywords? Maybe I can add some that would aid others in the search.
@@CountryLivingExperience I searched for "replace magnetic ballast with electronic t12." Not super complex, but I think it was as much the order in which I typed them in as anything else. It might also have been using the word "electronic" instead of "electric." I just got done with the change out a few minutes ago, and it worked great (after one minor adjustment because I did it slightly wrong the first time)!
Thanks for the heads up.
Same as Dale P, great explanation on the extra blue wire, also matched what I was doing exactly! Thank You
You're welcome. Have a good one!
Thank you. This procedure has always been a mystery until now.
You're welcome
Thank you. I had the same situation and when I was finished the light actually worked!
Nice. Glad it's working properly now.
Thank you! Bro. You saved me at least a 1000. Just by watching your video.
Great to hear!
I agree with the other folks,it helped a lot! thanks , will be instructing the fellas at the hardware store next!!!
Thanks for the nice comment. We are glad it was helpful.
Thank you so much, you explain it and show step by step how to replace this ballast so well. I finally understand what to do with those blue wires. Thanks again Blessings.
Thank you for the kind comment. I am glad the video was helpful.
Your instructions was very helpful
Nice and very simple explanation on How To...Thanks!!!
You’re welcome
Is there a way to test a 8" T12 magnelic ballast.Thanks John
Very well explained! Right to the point! Thank you!
You're welcome
I have a NOS magnetic ballast like the one you showed. it sounds nice!
Cool
@@CountryLivingExperience Thanks!
Good job! Very clear presentation.
Thank you. Glad it helped.
Thanks for the clear explanation

Got the job done thanks

I don't have a chart on my old magnetic ballast. It does give the lamp type and watts. And some numbers after that , that don't look like amps. 430m-something. Oh, well.
That might work. Take it to home depot and try to match them up.
I recently replaced my old GE electronic ballast with a new Advanced Signify electronic ballast, but my hot and neutral wire connections are different than your video. The hot and neutral wires are tied into another t12 lamp and both sets of wires are tied together with the 18 guage black and white wires that go to the nearest tombstone on one end of my fixture. Then another pair of these black and white wires exit the same tonestone and go to the ballasts' black and white wires. Lights just flicker. New bulbs have been tested with sister fixture, tombstones replaced and I replaced new ballast with another new one with same results.
Thank you very much made change out work great
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful.
Great video very helpful and it helped me a lot!
Thank you
Thanks for this video. Just did the exact same swap out. The extra blue wire was confusing my non-electrician brain.
Glad it was helpful
Great video!
Thank you
Great video! Thanks!!!

Hi i change à ballast for a CFL 40 watts lights
The bulb get burn after à few hours
So whats i ca do to fix
Thanks I appreciate it
You're welcome.
Did this exactly like video. Only one tube comes on. Check all connections. Any help appreciated.
You may have a bad tombstone or the ballast is not matched perfectly to the luminaire.
Hey! Found this video to be helpful. Is the new electronic ballast in this video still working?
Hello. Yes, they are still working perfectly.
I did follow the instruction, but why mine just oN one side not both light oN? Did i Miss something?
I cannot see what you did so I have no idea.
excellent video. confirmed my question.
Thanks. Glad it was helpful.
My setup is just like yours except for on the new ballast I have two red wires and I have two yellow wires. My thought is do I connect The Two Reds to the red and blue and then just not anything with the yellow wires
Sounds like the new ballast does not match the fixture. Do the numbers match with the old ballast?
I wired exactlu like you showed here, but only one bulb came on and flickered. I am completely at a loss, any ideas why?
The only thing I can think of is there is a loose connection. That could account for some flickering and only one bulb coming on.
Any answer on why only one light bulb comes on?
That could be many reasons. Loose wire, bad bulb, bad tombstone connector.
anyone got a link to the ballast with the yellow wires?
Nice, but your fixtures are wired in parallel, never in series. Some ballasts may power multiple lamps in series, but the fixtures are in parallel - always.
I caught that also!!
Right on, I just wouldn’t tie up the excess wire like that, it’s adds up unnecessary resistance which then creates more heat
Thanks for the tip.
I have an 40 year old, fluorescent fixture, single bulb, 48" 40 Watt, T12. The bulb bulb flickers.
I did try a new LED bulb. It also flickers just like the old fluorescent bulb. It's even a TYPE A (plug n play) that is supposed to work with any ballast type.
I next tried replacing the starter 'fuse', but still had flicker with both the old fluorescent and the new LED bulbs.
So, I figure, if not the bulb, and if not the stater - it has to be the ballast...
The current ballast has 3 wires: 1 black, & 2 white. What kind of ballast do I buy, and how do I wire it?
The ballasts I am seeing for sale have more wires, some blue, some red, sometimes yellow wires too. Is there a ballast with a range of wattages I can buy? Will a ballast support TWO 32 watt bulbs, still support ONE 40 watt bulb?
I have no idea. You will have to take your old ballast numbers and have someone help you find the corresponding new type of ballast at the store. If it is to old, it may be easier to replace the whole fixture.
@@CountryLivingExperience Thanks for your reply. I wish there was some info , or a label, on the old ballast. There is not. I may just get a new fixture.
Thank you for your video. It really helped! Once we got it wired correctly the lights came on. However, my lights flicker, whereas with the bad ballast, it would buzz and then the lights would go out. Any suggestions for next troubleshooting steps?
There are many reasons a fluorescent can flicker. 1. A bad ballast (we have that one covered). 2. bad bulbs 3. A loose wire 4. A bad breaker 5. Bad bulb connection. Additionally, if the ballast is the incorrect one for your luminaire then this could cause it to flicker. Check all of those. Hope this helps.
@@CountryLivingExperience Thank you for the quick response. Bulbs are new, so that one is covered as well. For loose wires, that could be in the wire nut connections or the tombstones? Bad breaker, hopefully not, but this will be the last resort step. Bad bulb connection, just clean with alcohol? Thanks again!
Loose wire could be anywhere so it's best to check them all. Bad bulb connection...might be best to shut the power off and use a fine wire brush in the tombstone connectors. Were you able to get the correct ballast? The numbers match?
@@CountryLivingExperience I'm pretty sure the ballast is correct. My brother picked it up, but I will double check it. I will work on those troubleshooting steps. The black and white wires weren't quite long enough to connect to the power source, so we cut a small section to make an extension. We'll have to look at that as well as the connectors.
I really appreciate your help and the quick responses. I will keep you posted on my DIY repair. :)
In my ballast two red wires I see in yours is only one?
Then you have a different ballast than me. This video only highlights one type of ballast for this specific fixture.
How would I wire a 4 lamp, dual ballast setup? The local electrical store gave me 2x replacement ballasts for my old magnetic ones with 5 wires each (black, white, 2x blue and 1 red each). The fixture itself has 4 wires going into one end, but only 2 going into the other (plus the black/white). Help?
Without actually seeing it, it will be very hard to determine the old and new setup. I am not an electrician.....just know a few basics. Sorry I couldn't help more.
My ballast has the yellow wires that you mention in this video. How do I wire this with the same replacement in the video.
You can't as far as I know. You need to purchase a ballast that with those same numbers as your old one.
Is the process similar for connecting a high pressure sodium bulb to the wall? There's plenty of videos showing how to connect the ballast to the igniter, but they never show how to connect the whole setup to the wall.
I am unfamiliar with high pressure sodium bulb connections.
@@CountryLivingExperience ok, well thanks for responding
It appears that you cut 1 black and 1 white wire when you removed the old magnetic ballast. When you connected the new one, there were 2 black and 2 white that you connected to the new ballast. Where did the 2 new wires come from?
I cut a blue and red wire when removing the old ballast. The black and white from the new ballast connect to your power wires coming into the light fixture. The old fixture had those wires from the ceiling connected in two groups of three wires. There are no new wires. The new ballast just uses different colors of wires to connect than the old one did.
6:35 “these three together” which three, I thought there one black and one white?
The blue from the new ballast with the 2 black from the tombstones on the fixture....or/and the second blue from the new ballast to the 2 whites from the tombstones on the ballast. Blue + 2 blacks or whites = 3
Great video, one thing... I replaced my 50 year old ballast with a new electronic one... after 1 year the new one is failing... just don't make them like they used to...
Thank you.
They sure don't make them like they used to. It is so unfortunate.
I have 9 8' T12 lights wired in series. I am attempting to replace the old ballasts. the hot and neutral wires are common to one end and I can only get one bulb to work.
So is your wiring different that what my fixtures and ballast had? Does your new ballast have the same wiring as mine?
My power is via a plug. I am still confused as to wiring. I have one red and one blue on one side and one white and one black on the other side of the fixture. Where do the two blue wires and one red wire on ballast go? Does the black and white on the fixture only go to the black and white on the new ballast? I just don,t get it, this should be simple. Thanks
It is hard to tell by just reading your dilemma. One blue goes to the white from the fixture and one blue goes to the black from the fixture. The black one goes to the black from the power (plug) in and the white to the white. Think of it as the ballast interrupting or going between the powered wires in from the plug and the powered wires inside the fixture. Then the red goes to the blue and red on the fixture...all three together. Done. Hope that helps.
How to connect the yellow wires to an adjacent shop light? You had mentioned you weren’t going to talk about him in this video. Is there another video that you are talking about them?
That is not exactly what I said about the yellow wires. Some luminaires (light fixtures) have different connections and some new ballasts have different wiring. I don't have another video on this because I don't have any fixtures with that wiring configuration. Sorry.
Does a florescent lamp electronic ballast(if it's not visually burn) can cause GFCI socket not to work?
It should have no effect on the gfci outlet.
Great video and easy to follow. What is odd is that once we powered it on, only one bulb lights. When you take the lit bulb out, the other bulb will light up. Also when you turn the switch off and turn it back on, either bulb will come on but not both at the same time. This seems to eliminate the bulb and tombstones. Any ideas?
Sounds like it is not getting enough power to light both bulbs. Is the new ballast sized properly for the luminaire?
@@CountryLivingExperience The old ballast was a magnetic Lumi-Kon S-275-120-CP. The specs say for (2) F96T12-75W. Replaced it with a GE Pro Electronic multi-volt (120v - 277V) F96 T12. Happens to be the exact one in the video. Thanks,
I'm stumped on that one. Sorry brother.
Because he skipped the part where you have to rewire the fixture. Had to do that for all the one's I have at work.
The new T12 ballast I have has the black and white wires on one side, but the other side has two yellows, two blues, and two reds. The old magnetic one I removed had the white and black on one side, and one red and one blue - no yellows. Strangely, the old red and blue wired were installed backward...blue to red and red to blue. It worked fine until the ballast went. Now I'm stuck and haven't found instructions for this scenario, Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Sorry Matt. I have not dealt with one with that configuration. Were the instructions that came with the bad?
I still have flickering. one of the female tombstones are oozing a blue fluid. "PROBLEM?"
Yes, that sounds like a problem. I have heard of a black fluid coming from a really old ballast but not a blue fluid from a tombstone. I would replace the whole fixture.
So why are some running these led's without a ballast?
LED's are different tech. They don't need one but you must have the correct light fixture.
i did all this, and my light tries to come on but lightly flashes. I have checked all the wires and everything is tight and connected like you show. Got any ideas?
Do you have new bulbs? Could be a bad bulb, a faulty ballast, or a loose connection. Those are the only factors that I can think of that would cause that.
@@CountryLivingExperience New bulbs so I will swap the ballast for another new one, I had purchased two. Thanks!
where did you buy the ballast
Lowes
Im just wondering if I need mine replaced. I gotta flick light switch several time and then it may turn on. If it does not, I hit it with a broomstick and it turns on. Is this a ballast thing, or maybe bad bulbs? Both bulbs do Wirk.
Which part are you hitting? Sounds like potentially a loose wire.
The bulbs or the metal thing that holds them. As times I remove and replace a bulb and it then works. Sometimes for days it turn on/off no problem. Then i have to hit everyday. It’s different all the time.
It could be a wire or the tombstone (the thing that holds the bulb) or that ballast. It’s hard to know.
@@prdeacon974 I might just get a new light fixture.
6:32 you have Black and white part of the fixture and then 2 blues from the ballast. You then mention "these three". There should be one blue to a black or white and the other blue to the black or white depending on which one was used first. also hard to see because of all the wires. red and blue from other side of fixture to the red is the final step and easy to understand. At 6:32 I think you have attached one blue to a white or black from the fixture and then the second blue to the othern black or white from the fixture. There us not a "These three"? Correct?
There are two tombstones for two bulbs. It will be 3 wires in total that are getting connected at that point....a blue from the ballast, a white from left tombstone, and a white from right tombstone. The other blue will connect to the blacks from each tombstone.
@@CountryLivingExperience Yes ,figured that out whiule driving to work this A.M. Had to rethink your vid few times Thanks
I have the exact opposite temperature problem with all my old fluorescent fixtures. The work great in cool/cold dry weather. As soon as it gets hot and humid they stop working. Sometimes when I flip the switch a bunch of times they come on. Do you think that's the ballast also?
More than likely it is the ballasts but also check for corrosion on the tombstones.
@@CountryLivingExperience Thanks, I'll check it out.
on an 8ft f96t12 light, it calls for a ballast with 2 blues and 1 red. What if the fixture only as 1 blue and 1 red on one side and only the black and white to hook up the ballast to the power black and white on the other side.... no other wires?
Take the existing broken ballast to the hardware store and match the numbers. Each luminaire/fixture is made/wired differently. They new ballast type must match the old one.
There are no electronic ballasts for f96t12 2 bulbs 8ft with only 1 blue and 1 red
Sorry. Sounds like you will need to get a new fixture.
Why is there no yellow wire? I have a yellow wire, as well as, red and blue.
Some luminaires and ballasts are configured differently. The yellow wires are usually the return path to the ballast to complete the circuit. You need a new ballast that is configured in the same way. Take your old ballast to the store and match it’s type and numbers as I mentioned in the video. Hope this helps.
Will this fix flickering?
It should but flickering could be due to a bad bulb or a poor connection between the bulb and tombstone. Check those first before replacing the ballast as it is the most expensive piece.
@@CountryLivingExperience
They really just started flickering now that it is getting colder where I live.
You lost me when you were connecting the blue wire to the fixture. You said: connect these three wires together. What three wires are you talking about? Also, I have two white wires coming out of one tombstone and two black coming out of the other. Is that what you have? Thanks
Sorry if I was unclear. Each tombstone should have a black and white wire coming out of them. Connect one blue to both blacks and the other blue to both whites. Hope that helps.
I have power to all 4 pins but only 1 light comes on. Is this a ballast problem?
Sounds more like a bulb or tombstone problem.
Thanks for the info. The bulbs are new so Ill look for a tomstone part.@@CountryLivingExperience
Should I replace the 4 tombstones or just the side I have trouble with. I replaced the tombstones on one side and still no luck. But power. Bulbs are new.
@@randyjohnson6415 It would depend on how much they cost. It may be more cost efficient to just buy a new light.
Your old ballast has Black While Blue and Red , My old ballast only has black , white , and the red , no blue . I bought the same exact new ballast, can i still make it work ? I do have the single contact tombstones on the fixture, but the have no black on the tombstones. The left has one single red wire off the tombstone , the right has two whites . ? Bulbs are single contact T-12
Magnetek/Universal Slimline 822-BR-TC-P Ballast 1-Lamp is what i'm replacing
It is hard for me to tell. You need to take the old ballast to the hardware store and match the numbers for the ballast type to a new ballast.
@@CountryLivingExperience..... thanks
Good luck
@@CountryLivingExperience Update : It worked the exact same way as described in your video . When you said to place the red and blue together, i suspected it had the same function inside the new ballast . Kudos much !
Where the red wire connects, there is only one red wire coming out or from the tomstone
I think i have it, iam going to cut one blue short , tape off end. Now iam going to run the other blue to the two whites coming out. Then on the other end, it will be red to red. Then of course white to white and black to black
Don't cut the wire before you test that setup. Each luminaire is different. Could you potentially have the wrong ballast for your fixture?
You have two bulbs ,I have one bulb. You video really helped. You where very clear. Thanks. ( I just had to think alittle )
Cool. Glad you got it worked out.
This could have been clearer if you wouldn't have continued to use the old ballast as an example.
Can't please everyone.
You could have converted it to led
I gave several reasons why I didn't.
You made this more confusing by explaining the wiring but not explaining while you're installing.
This was really confusing
Best thing to do is hire an electrician..
This is simple enough to do it yourself.
Alot of people, tried to fix things themselves because of you tube videos. They end up shocking themselves or just make things worst. Then they want to call me after the fact..
Very confusing.
Do you have a question I can help you with
