    Ben, thanks again for another sensible, useful video even if it was a while ago. This particular job is one that I have done many times in fixtures with 1, 2 or 4 lamps of varying lengths. In my experience, I have found that I can accomplish this task faster if I just remove the old wires from the sockets and slip the new ones in their place. The way I go about this is to cut the old wires going to the sockets, so they are about four inches long. Then I replace the ballast with a new one. Then I remove the sockets (they usually just slide out but some require that a screw be removed) one at a time and remove the old wires by twisting counter clockwise (probably doesn’t matter which direction) while maintaining a tug on the wire at the same time and the wire can be safely removed without damage to the socket. The wires from the new ballast can now be pushed into the socket. Take care to maintain the placement of the colours. Then slide the socket back in place. In the fixture in your video, it looks like the sockets are the slide out type.

    If you don't want to add wire nuts, you can "plug" the new wires into the old connection by cutting the old wires off leaving an inch or so and then "unscrew" the old wire. Pull gently as you unscrew the wire. It works. You can then simply plug in the new (should already be stripped) wire into the old connector.

      Most ballasts have a wiring diagram printed on their case. And not all ballasts have the same colorcoded ease of use. 2 wires on one side will be your power in (white is + black is -) the 4-6 wires on the opposite side (depending on make and model) will send power to the bulbs.

    I have three 2-bulb fixtures ("shop lights") that will only light up on one side. When I put a bulb in the bad side, it will either stay unlit or it will flicker and snap, never fully lighting. Will I have to replace the whole ballast with those, too? Or is it cheaper to just replace the whole fixture?

If I remount the bulbs in the sockets, the go back on and work fine. Seems over time, "play" has developed between the sockets. Thank you for your help.

      Most of “contacts” for the light bulb snap in to the fixture. A lot of times they may bend out of shape from people changing the lights out. You can replace them. They sell them at Home Depot or any hardware stores. You will need to take some stuff apart.

    If you are using one of those bargain power testers always test it first on a known hot source to verify it works before trusting it right away on something you are working on. In a house you are dealing with 120vac. In a commercial environment more likely 277vac. Just a safety tip.

    • @REXXSEVEN
      @REXXSEVEN 3 года назад

      I know it's a six-year-old comment. But for anyone that's reading, he has a point. There are multiple ways to wire a light and a switch to it.
      Two common situations:
      The first situation is where you have power wires that comes to the switch box first and then continues to the light fixture. So if you shut the light switch off you'll probably be able to change the ballast with no problem. Although I wouldn't recommend it.
      The second type of setup is if the power wires comes to the light fixture box first then a wire leaves out to go to the switch and then returns to the light fixture box.
      And with this second set up, even if the light switch is off you could be in for a nasty surprise messing with the wires inside the fixture if you have not cut the circuit breaker off first (and if you are standing on a ladder when this happens, you could fall and be injured).
      Always cut the circuit breaker off first when possible.

      The most important part is safety, Ben. Which includes locking out the power to the fixture and more importantly not allowing children to test outlets. Why, you might ask? Because they might attempt to demonstrate that at another time thinking that it’s safe which could cause an electrocution. Kids and mains current don’t mix!

    How to fix!?? Misleading title. Should be “how to replace”

    Come on now Ben, I look forward to your videos but this video the headline is misleading.
    It should read how to replace a ballast and not how to fix a ballast.

    You did not show how to wire it. You know but we do not.

    Dude!!! That's outdated and way more expensive repairing that old technology, Convert to Led tubes. :-(

      I agree however when I made this video LED options were few and far between unfortunately. :)

    You should not have the child make contact to a live outlet with the noncontact volt sensor as he did in video.

      I appreciate your perspective but I disagree. I believe that it is important that you teach kids how important things like electricity work and how they can be safe around it. The more you teach the safer they are. Thanks for watching!

      Ok, I did not think of it that way. So it is safe to place a non contact volt meter in a live outlet? I truly dont know if it is safe. Thank you

    • @BenjaminSahlstrom
      @BenjaminSahlstrom  8 лет назад +7

      +Daniel Mcglinchey Yes it is safe as the non contact electrical tester has no ability to actually conduct any current to the user. It senses the presence of the AC current but does not do so using a metallic probe. I explained how it worked to him and how to use it correctly. Either way though I do agree that safety is absolutely crucial!
      Thanks again for your comment! I appreciate it very much and value the conversation.
      Blessings,
      Ben

      +Daniel Mcglinchey; One time, when I was a kid, I held onto, and inserted two bare wires, connected to an analog volt meter into a 120V AC socket. When I picked myself up off of the ground, I realized, once-and-for-all; that is something that I didn't want to do anymore. I am in my 60's now and remember the experience vividly like it happened yesterday.
