We never had knifes or guns in the school, no incidents even though Detroit was known for drive by shootings. I do not understand why everyone is putting their heads in the sand. 5 kids & 2 adults in our little house, growing up. My dad's hunting rifles were on wooden pegs on a rack he made, in my brothers' shared room. His pistol was on it's belt on one of the pegs. Not one of us ever touched one of them except to target practice with Dad...ever. One thing that "was" different back then was we only had TV only 3 channels. There were federal rules that wouldn't allow a dead body to be shown on screen, not even the news about the war. In the westerns when a bad guy was shot, he'd tip his hat to the damsel, he didn't cock his head and yell "Yippee kiyaye, m..f..r!" Killing wasn't repeatedly represented as a method of conflict resolution. We weren't desensitized with hours of games where you gain points and prestige according to how many you kill. We weren't groomed and desensitized. I remember when an ambulance went by, it was a "thing" where you'd stop and be concerned if someone you knew was hurt. Kids are born sensitized. They become desensitized. From one of his family member's facebook page, it sounds like that kid was raised in violence and turmoil and Call of Duty was solace for him. All that said, we are where we are, so I agree with Vinnie for some practical steps that are commonplace in other public venues.

People had respect for one another and looked out for each other. Of course, life wasn't perfect, and there have been aholes from the beginning of time. But things were better then. As a Canadian listening to you guys argue about this, it's quite interesting but honestly I think a lot of it starts at home.
If your child is unable to articulate their feelings and deal with their feelings of anger and sadness, then it's going to manifest in a way that's not good it could be drugs it could be violence who knows. Take your pick.
Everybody on the panel has a good point, I don't blame the guns entirely. But when you have a bad situation, and then you add a weapon to it, then you have a major problem. I think that's what's happening here.
I think the solution is multi-level. There has to be better supports for kids, security in the schools but then also on top of that keeping guns away from kids like this.

IN the UK here and y'all are crazy. Giving a beer to anyone under 21 is illegal with you. We hear so many stories of police aggressively pursuing eighteen year olds just because they are drinking a beer. Meanwhile, "Here son, have an AR-15," A fourteen year old is not old enough for the army. They aren't in a well organised militia. Give a teenager a gun to practice with or hunt with - make sure, in law, it can only fire one at a time. Maybe pursue that law as aggressively as your alcohol laws. We understand more about emotional (dys) regulation these days, don't expect the teen to control their emotions, perhaps make laws that control the guns that teen can get their hands on. Ugh. Though, well done for finally making parents responsible for their own (in) actions.

This latest case has me so upset I can't even think straight. Something has to be done! NOW!! I didn't want to send my granddaughter to school today because I am so afraid of what could happen. When I was 20 years old, I was held up at gun point twice in 2 weeks at a business I worked at. The second man was killed by a police officer in front of me. He shot the man as he was walking out of the door, and he flew back into the room and hit the desk I was lying under. I was under that desk because the robber told me to lie down, face down, and I was waiting to be shot myself. That was 50 years ago. I am still scarred by that experience and can not imagine what these school children are going through. It has to end. No more dead kids. No more guns.

Every morning, you knew the routine, you got on line, scanned your ID, put your back pack in the scanner, and went through the metal detector, just like an airport. There was always security at the school as well. I didn’t even go to one of the bad schools, this was fairly decent. I never felt unsafe. And I was never upset that I had to do that every morning. It was just part of our normal routine. I was shocked when I found out that not all schools were like this around the states.

It’s pretty open as it should be. But no, in GA everyone seems compelled to keep a gun on their persons or cars and carelessly left around home for thieves to walk out with on the off chance they might need it. Much more likely to be stolen and used in a crime than save anyone’s life.
